News to upset some of the fans.

Interesting developments in the carosel of coaching…….According to a very good source – and believe me, sources are always very sketchy but this one has never steered me wrong — Dana Holgorsen will not be the next head coach of Pitt.

That’s all I can write about it now, I’ll have more later and I can say it with confidence – Holgorsen is not going to be the head coach at Pitt, pass it on to all who care.

But that doesn’t mean he might not still end up in the Big East…

The rumormill in the twitterverse indicated that WVU jumped in lately to offer Holgorsen the OC position and would then make him HC when Stewart retired in a year.

It’s all very strange.

UPDATE: Colin Dunlap, the PG’s WVU beat writer confirms the intrigue.

Sources confirmed today that a high-ranking official from West Virginia’s athletic department has been in contact with Oklahoma State offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen about the head coaching position at West Virginia, even as there is no vacancy.

That job would only come open if West Virginia athletic director Oliver Luck fired Mountaineers coach Bill Stewart either before, or after, West Virginia plays in the Champs Sports Bowl on Dec. 28 against North Carolina State. Luck declined to comment.

A source confirmed it is probable Stewart will be fired if West Virginia does not win that bowl game, and could happen regardless of the outcome.

Can you say bidding war? There’s also speculation about the “coach-in-waiting” thing, but that Stewart is ready to resign if it comes to that. Neatly solving WVU’s Stewart problem regardless

@PittFan in ATL

Which candidates are you referring to that are shying away from Pederson? It doesn’t seem like anyone other than Holgersen has even seriously been in the mix.

I do not understand the desire for an on campus stadium. How recently have you been on campus? Where would you put it? More importantly, where would we park? At Heinz and get bused in? The student season tickets sold out this year. A smaller stadium would accommodate less students, not more. The new fields are beautiful, but they are for sports that don’t require much parking. Don’t say they could have put it all there, the footprint is barely big enough for a stadium, much less for parking.
Getting to and from Heinz is bad enough. The roads around campus are a disaster on moving in and out days, imagine how bad it would be with tens of thousands more, all leaving at once.
It isn’t the location of the stadium, it is what is on the field. Period.

Navy Panther you are spot on. A new HC is NOT going to put fannies into the seats, winning is. Young coach, established coach, coordinator, Poopy Pants it doesn’t matter (only maybe to a select few of you who will/will not re-up your season tix based upon who SP hires). As long as the new HC beats the Ohio’s, Buffalo’s and YSU’s AND wins the BE, Heinz will be filled. Like shopping for a mutual fund, past performance is not indicative of future returns.

If Zeise had been on the Watergate beat, he would have identified Mickey Mouse as “deep throat” before is was over. He should be embarrassed with his blog. I think he could use some free cheese to go with his whine. He obviously doesn’t know anything and needs to get into politics where facts don’t matter. Interesting thing to observe: Smizic gets more than two to one comments on his blog on Pitt subjects over Zeise simply confirming he has a greater following in retirement than the rookie. I think we are witnessing the life of a pseudo journalist living on the “lunatic fringe” of their profession.

@Chris

If Holgorsen WAS Pederson number one candidate as has been reported by not only Zeise but also on pantherlair by Chris peak, do you really think he would come out and say, “oh, yeah, we really liked him and was at the top of our list but it just didn’t work out.” No way. They will deny any interest was there to try and cover their butts and hope people believe it. It looks like some people apparently are believing it.

People like Smizik are saying “no need to panic yet” but so far, they have lost the two top candidates they were interested in (according to two main Pitt writers) and now you have the beat writer saying “they are back to square one.” Call me silly, but I would say panic is starting to be appropriate, especially considering the track record of SP.

Maybe the Pitt Athletic department really is a fine-tuned machine that can fool reporters and not release any information about a coaching search. Do you really believe that, however, based on their history??

Comment by Mac 12.14.10 @ 8:56 am

They are losing their recruits also. I understand the need to take your time to find the right coach. But the longer this takes, i don’t see our recruits holding on. Most or all the current staff will be replaced.

Does anyone know if there was an actual incident with Holgorsen?? I googled it, got a couple Okie ST blogs, seems like it’s just “known” he likes pretty girls and beer??? Please tell me Nordenberg didn’t dismiss this guy, because it’s “known” the guy likes girls and beer??? Was he arrested somewhere or something that I’m missing???? Hey Mark, I want a clean program too, and someone to represent us well, but, in dealing with college football coaches, you better come down off your “holier than thou” perch or we’re gonna be 6-6 forever!!!!!!

Going on Day 7 of this saga, I can’t understand how Leach doesn’t even get a call…

I’m not saying I want him or think his style will work at Pitt…but in terms of value (quality coach, potential to excite, proven HC, relatively cheap vs. potential bad press, recruiting challenges, and even worsening Pitt FB brand)…Leach may be the best option.

If Wanny was given chance, after chance, after chance with NO evidence of success…

Comment by Pauly P 12.14.10 @ 9:27 am

Here is a horrifying, albeit pulled out of thin air, scenario…

Holgorsen as HC at WVU with Leach as his OC.

As long as we are looking for rumors to panic over, let’s start a good one.

Comment by Beat the hoopies 12.14.10 @ 9:27 am

Zeise didn’t say Pitt was at square one, he said he was at square one. Basically, Zeise is admitting that he has no clue who is actually on Pederson’s list and is going to try to find out information today.

And Holgorsen wasn’t Pitt’s top two:
“he [Holgorsen] was not at the point where the key decision makers at Pitt were considering him or had taken the steps to begin looking deeper into his background and checking his references as we had previously reported.”

Obviously, there is a lot misinformation going around, which is expected with a bunch of different people with different objectives and goals. It seems that Holgorsen was possibly floating out strong Pitt rumors in order to get WVU to make a move.

In regards to Nordenberg, some people on here seem to think that Nordenberg places a high priority on competing for national championships. But really, it seemms Nordenberg is trying to mold Pitt into a top academic institution. I have absouletly no problem with this. It makes both of my degrees more valuable. Nordenberg doesn’t have the win at all costs mentality and he never will. Some people on here need to accept this.

Comment by XBlackMagicX 12.14.10 @ 9:39 am

As much as I was excited about the prospect of a high octane offense under Holgorsen, I was a little concerned about his ability to be a head coach and a leader. I dont think he is a “can’t miss” guy. I guess only time will tell.

There are still some fine candidates out there, lets just hope we can find a way to pull one.

Forget about Leach, save your time and energy – Its not going to happen – not now! not ever! Im not saying it would be a bad move but its not reality. I think it is clear though that the Pitt admin is looking to step into the future and hire a more offense minded coach.

Comment by Coach Ditka 12.14.10 @ 9:45 am

Wanna keep the recruiting class?

Hire Tom Bradley!!!

(Ok, I’ve schilled for Bradley about 20 times so far, I’m pretty sure one of you is going to find me and shoot me if I do it again haha)

Comment by Jimbo Covert's my Dad 12.14.10 @ 9:53 am

Leach will never be hired – his morals and checkered past are way to controversial for the administration. No Tom Bradley either – he is nothing special. We need to get kids OUTSIDE of WPA – the WPIAL stinks in comparison with the areas of the country we are not recruiting in (Texas, Florida for example).

Pederson said exactly what criteria they are looking for and will be dilligent in their search (basically Wanny that can coach). I am fine with that. Be patient.

Comment by Greg 12.14.10 @ 10:02 am

Jay Norvell’s name has been thrown around the past 24hrs. I don’t understand how he can be considered. He was the WR coach for Oklahoma and assistant to the Offense Coordinator last year. Stoops announced yesterday Heupel and Norvell both were promoted to Co Offense Coordinators for next year. Stoops also said Heupel will call all plays. I just don’t see Norvell being a serious candidate when Stoops won’t allow him to call plays. Heupel is 32 with no play calling experience while Norvell has several years of play calling experience. Just a thought.

Comment by Why me 12.14.10 @ 10:11 am

Holgorsen is using Pitt & WVU as leverage to get one of the coordinator positions @ Texas or Florida, which could pay him over a mil annually. Then when whichever team he chooses gets back on track he will have his pick of most of the glam jobs in the country, Don’t think he has any real interest in coaching in the worst BCS conference.

p.s.- look out for Manny Diaz from Miss. St.

Comment by Dead, Jail, or Pitt Football 12.14.10 @ 10:12 am

I loved the Wanny hire when it happened…and Auburn fans hated the Chizik hire when it happened. So I’ll reserve judgement on the hire until a couple years (or until we lose to Ohio)

Comment by Tony Cancilla 12.14.10 @ 10:15 am

Greg – You are correct. The WPIAL is terrible. I watch High School teams here in LA/TX that would beat Cal U and Slippery Rock consistantly. These kids in the South are top shelf, Now with TCU in the mix, we need a coach with Southern Connections. Not local PA/OH connections. I think DH and ML have those connections. Just watch TCU destroy everyone in their path unless we hire a coach with Florida/Louisiana/Alabama/Texas connections…

Comment by Upittbaseball 12.14.10 @ 10:19 am

WPIAL is terrible. I don’t think so. Woody High leads the “COUNTRY” in NFL players.

Comment by alcofan 12.14.10 @ 10:25 am

The Pederson equation can be used to derive Pitt’s next head football coach. It has already been proven by University of Nebraska mathematicians:

(# of available successful coaches) – (availability of better paying positions) / (AD incompetence)^2 * ? = exciting new Pitt head football coach Dick Jauron

Comment by WideRight 12.14.10 @ 10:34 am

This just in…Holgorsen to WVU and Bill Stewart to the Panthers! Yee-haw.

Comment by Pitt it IS 12.14.10 @ 10:39 am

Nordenberg doesn’t have a “win at all costs” mentality?? Number one, neither do most of us, but we’d like to at least get out of the quagmire of mediocrity? Is that ok??? Number two, if Nordy isn’t concerned about winning, at least a little, why’d he ok the firing of DW??? That was his perfect schlep. Mediocrity and no trouble???

Comment by Dan 12.14.10 @ 10:59 am

If Nordy nixed Holgorsen because of his behavior, that he’s not married with kids, or any other personal life issues, then he needs to go and weed out his entire academic faculty. I’m sure there are a ton of them with pretty unprofessional, eccentric, lifestyles outside of academia and they won’t be bringing in the amount of money a successful FB coach would. This is a complete joke, its a FB coach, you want someone with fire and personality.

Comment by Henry Hynoceros 12.14.10 @ 11:12 am

Pitt says Bo Pelini not our kind off guy. Pitt says Holgorsen not our kind off guy. Pitt says Boise head coach will cost to much.

Comment by FRANKCAN 12.14.10 @ 11:23 am

1. No one knows if Nordy nixed DH, and IF he did, why.
2. One of hundreds of faculty members is not the public face of your University.
3. Your football coach is a very public face of the University and whatever the reality, based on available links to interviews, DH does not come across very well.
4. They will be handing the new HC a budget of millions. As Chancellor and AD they better be darn sure about him before they do.

Comment by Beat the hoopies 12.14.10 @ 11:27 am

Face it, the current Pitt administration wants Saint Stephen and wants him at minimum wage.

Comment by Alfred E. Neuman 12.14.10 @ 11:27 am

Ok, I’ll hold my judgement. I will wait and see who they get. If they end up getting a 2 star coach, that talks a good game to the press, and goes 6-6, 5-7 and 7-5 and they let DH go, because someone said he likes pretty girls, beer, and he wasn’t real charasmatic with the press, shame on Nordy, SP or whoever is making these decisions. You could have had one of the hottest OC’s in the country, that could have put a face on the program, the face of whipping people 55-10 and been ranked in the top 15, winning the B.E and a BCS bowl.

Yes, yes, I know, there would have been no guarantee that Holgorsen could do anything as a head coach, but, again, if they hire a dud, and let that guy go that could have had a chance to fire up Pii, then, they will end up with more empty stadiums in the future.

I’ll say it again, Nordy allready had “the face” of the program, DW, why not just sit in mediocrity with a guy you can have your thumb on?? I mean, you allready had it??????

Also, I’ll be the devils advocate, and be politically correct (something I detest) for the academia……”You mean, you pre-judged Dana Holgorsen, how dare you pre judge this man and not give him his fair shot???”

Ok, I’ll wait and see, they do a typical Pitt move and get another dud, we’ll be right back where we were, with no interest in the program, and no one buying season tickets.

The importance of this hire is absolutely huge. The fan base is in a bad place right now, if it is a dud, Pitt could sink to a new low. Hopefully Nordy and SP are gonna pull a rabbit out of their hat, but, I’ll tell you, if they don’t, why’d they even bother firing DW????????

Just read a post on Oklahoma site Holgorsen took job at WVU we are toast if true.
