I wish I had more time. I don’t, so rather than break things down from the game — for now — I’m just going to hit a link dump.

Talib Zanna’s impact seems to have been a big theme from the write-ups. Here. Here. Here. Here. A double-double on a national stage will do that.

From a Maryland perspective, the first thing they are bemoaning are — unsurprsingly — the missed free throws. Any mention of all the missed bunnies and open drives by Pitt — especially in the first half that kept things equal? Of course not.

That and Pitt’s depth wearing down the Terps late in the game. Something that could also be a factor with a potentially tired Texas team tonight.

Inside the defense focused on shutting down Jordan Williams — and they did a solid job of that. Other defense was a little shaky at times, but taking out the primary threat and getting rebounds.

Pitt’s depth got a little, um, deeper with Nasir Robinson returning. In limited time, he provided his energy and toughness inside. Easy to forget that he plays a lot bigger and stronger than he appears.

A couple other write-ups and a bit of a puff piece referring back to the Ireland trip.

Looks like there should be another liveblog tonight. Gametime 7pm on ESPN2. Though, since it follows the Maryland-Illinois game, it may start a little later.

I’m kind of continuing the discussion from the live-blog thread but in my eyes the only big problem last night was the first half shot-making. We had open jumpers and good drives to the basket but awkward bricks and wild finishes at the hoop were our main problem. If we shoot 50% in the first half (we shot 30%) we’re up 15 at the half and cruise the rest of the way (very hypothetical, but so are most sports arguments). I didn’t think the defense was too terrible either, I mean its STILL Maryland, they’re going to have scorers. They had that one frosh jump off the bench and score 4-5 points in a flash. Overall we could have played better on both ends, but far from lousy.

So many topics to broach but I just want to address Gil Brown. A lot of people are frustrated with him and such, and its understood, but come on guys we know what it is- Gil will score 25 tonight and save the game! As frustrating as he is he’s still a threat to drop 20 and 12 easily. Even though we all feel he should average those stats he is still a valuable weapon. Someone said it in the other thread but I think its very true- the guy does not have many offensive moves. In fact, my favorite of his moves is when he dribbles into the lane, the defender is in good position, Gil looks stuck in turnover land and then launches himself above everyone and slams it home. Between that, open 3s and the occasional baseline jumper he’s not much of a scorer.

Really looking forward for some payback tonight. That game between Illinois and Texas was frantic at times but honestly despite that final score I thought both teams played good D at times. Texas played well the whole game but Ill hit all those 3s in the first half. Transition defense and per usual rebounding will be the keys tonight.

I was at the game last night. I wish Pitt “traveled” better. Last year the Garden was packed with Hoosier fans and this year Maryland had a majority of the Garden filled. Granted it’s a bigger school and closer to NYC than Pitt, but…Anyway, some observations. As usual, Pitt was a bit slow to start but rebounded strongly and took control in the second half. The penetration D needs to step up especially at the top of the key, where Tucker, Mosley and Bowie penetrated the lane at will, and usually took it right to the basket. Wanamaker, Gibbs and Woodall have to do a better job of sliding across and atleast slowing the penetration. Pitt’s inside game looked strong and the Terps had no answer for Zanna. Nice to see Nas back in the lineup.

Hey!! Is that REALLY YOU, Jerome? I used to have a church in your home town of Detroit and was always one of your fans. BUT, I digress. The Columbus Panthers will be watching the Pittites win tonite against the Longhorns. Actually, we were worried last night that we would have to go up against the Illini and their awesome 3 pointers. We drew the better opponent tonite, but not an easy one. We will have to play better than last evening to pull it off. Also, I am looking forward to viewing the South Florida game tomorrow as well. What a glorious weekend of REDEMPTION this could be. Rev. George of Columbus

Screw it. I gots basketball fever… I’m busting out of work early now and headed to Stout for a few. Will go into MSG to watch the second half of the Maryland game. Wearing my Pitt knit hat with Panther cocked on the left side all gangsta like and shit. The secret pass phrase is “No seriously, tonight is really going to be Gilbert’s night”.

I am a huge fan of Gary Williams and am more impressed every day with Jamie Dixon. Gary knew he could not attack us with the flex offense and went to a lot of 1-4 sets. Pitt adjusted on the fly and should have won handliy…except for first half shooting.

I am not as upset at Brown for his shooting problems as I am for not having his head in the game. His defensive lapses are scary and he does things with the ball on offense that break down the success of our sets. Do not think he is mentally challanged but somehing is woefully wrong with this boy. So, he’ll score 30 tonight!
Pitt will crush Texas tonight. Go Pitt!

Rev George, I always thought Jerome Lane was the 2nd most famous alum of St Vincent St Mary H.S. in Akron. I believe it was his teammmate Demetrius who is from Motown.

I wouldn’t worry about the write-ups from the Maryland perspective as we Pitt Blather bloggers well know that it is always the fault of Pitt’s coaches and players when we lose, and can never be attributed to the talent or resolve of the opponents.

If, if, if. Ya, if Maryland could hit some free throws, they could have won. Maybe if they didn’t get dominated on the glass, they could have won too.

Wbb: “Upon further review” I believe you are correct. My memory is playing tricks. Was it then Jerome who broke the rim and the glass on a dunk? Thank you for recovering my fumble. Rev. George
