Notes Before ‘Cuse

Filed under: Football — Chas @ 7:08 pm

Taking a break from pondering whether Yuengling’s looming purchase of an ex-Coor’s plant in Memphis (apparently they once made Zima there) means that the expansion will finally get it to Ohio sometime in the near future.

Liveblog tomorrow, because I just love sharing in the frustration.

Just trying to hit some quick things.

After hearing that one of the good things post-ND was that Taglianetti was all the way back from his injury, he appears out (or at least unlikely) for Syracuse. As is freshman CB K’Wuan Williams. I mean, it’s not like the secondary has had issues or anything this year, or that Williams was outplaying Ricky Gary.

The other things of note in Zeise’s injury update is that Greg Romeus might be back sooner than expected. Well, at least sooner than I expected since I figured at best a bowl game. Strangely Bryan Murphy, a freshman DE who looked great in training camp until he was injured might end up having his redshirt ripped off. Desperation or actually deciding to play some freshmen who are out-practicing/playing the “experienced” players ahead of them?

Twitter rumors are that Shayne Hale has quit the team. Not sure, but will monitor. Guess if the season is going to be less than expected, might as well really circle the drain.

Also briefly got rumor-mongered on Mike Cruz possibly suspended. Not sure about that one, but nice timing with the article about the lack of production from the TE spot.

It’s hard for me not to read a sense of desperation by Coach Wannstedt in this statement.

“We just have to win, period, and build some confidence. I think that is where we are at right now as a team. You give yourself the best chance to win on how you prepare and our guys have prepared good. Our guys are excited about playing, but we’ve got to transfer practice to the game.”

Clearly he recognizes just how much this team has to win tomorrow for the rest of the season. It’s the fact that he is now publicly saying it that is surprising.

Syracuse expects a physical game, and plans to play a physical game. Probably the only reason I think Pitt will win. This is Wannstedt’s kind of game. Guess we’ll find out if it is this Pitt team’s as well.

I don’t expect anything more than a sub-par effort from coaches and players and maybe a close non-loss

If Wannstedt is feeling the same pressure to win he felt before the WVU game in 2007 Pitt will pull it out.

Comment by TonyinHouston 10.15.10 @ 9:51 pm

Why would it make me feel better if after 58 years of life Dave Wannstedt would learn the difference between preparing ‘good’ and preparing ‘well’?

Screw the redshirts, play to win now. This season, as Chas so succinctly said, is circling the drain – worrying about 2014 won’t make a bit of difference to a bowl selection committee.

Pitt is going to win today, 31-13. Hail To Pitt!!!

Comment by Dan35 10.16.10 @ 7:49 am

Pitt fans have suffered great disappointment many times over many years, but this season may be the most frustrating ever. the build-up with three pre-season All Americans, the potential to beat an outstanding non- confernce schedule and then…

It was not Wanny,s fault that Fields was well… dumb, it was not his fault that Romeus was injured, but how do you have a team with an offensive line that can not open holes for your star running back, and how do you not have a division one quarterback? You have an All American wide out and you can’t get him the ball.

Maybe Bostick isn’t the answer but he did have big game experience. When Ray Graham has outplayed Lewis you don’t reward him with more carries?

This week Wanny spoke about winning the big east just like whwn he started he spoke about winning national championships. are you kidding me? How about winning them one game at a time?

I was at a wedding last week, missed the game. I am going to play golf today, I can’t watch anymore. I bleed blue and gold. I hope they don’t crash and burn, but I think they will.

First offensive play for Pitt:
– Tino fakes to Dion diving into the middle.
– ‘Cuse D-linemen are low assuming run allowing Tino to see over them.
– ‘Cuse safeties are cheating up expecting run and bite on the fake.
– Tino hits Baldwin who has beaten one-on-one coverage on a deep post – yes, a pass ACROSS THE MIDDLE.
– TOUCHDOWN PITT!
– ‘Cuse crowd is silent and the ‘Cuse players and coaches are stunned.
– Pitt goes for the throat and wins BIG!

And then I woke up.

Hail to PITT! Crush the Orange.

So, what happens if we get “out wannied” by the Cuse today? What will be his exCuse de jour?

He’s used up all of his others for previous losses this year (too early in the year, too slow, penalties, injuries, cleats, inerperienced qb, oline not jelling, etc. etc.)…

What will it be today?

PS– Chas, have you made it down to the Bier Market in Ohio City recently? A man with a fine palate for beer would appreciate their selection.

Comment by Pauly P 10.16.10 @ 9:21 am

A man with a fine palette for beer would not be excited about the potentiality of buying Yuengling.

Dan: You certainly are an ENIGMA. You bash the Panthers all week then predict a blowout win(31-13) on gameday. If you are correct I will come to the conclusion that your “bashing” was for motivational purposes only. Rev. George

Comment by Rev. George Mehaffey 10.16.10 @ 11:03 am

I, for one, do not view Dan’s observations as “bashing”. It sounds to me like “calling a spade a spade”. If people didn’t want Pitt to do well, they wouldn’t be on this board in the first place. Pointing out that Wanny is a serial underachiever is a refreshing change of pace from the many posts from those with rose colored glasses who continue to insist Wanny is making “progress”. Pulleeze! Give it up.

As I havestated, I do not think Wanny is a big dummy or a blithering idiot. He knows football but cannot handle the many details of being head coach. So today, let’s see if he covered this single detail: Syracuse has the only D1 football field that is completely flat (as it doubles as a bball court). The passing angles are different as are the kicking angles. For those of you remembering the Walt era FG misses that cost us two games…he never once practiced his team on flat surfaces prior to the Cuse game. Let’s see if Wanny has at least had Hutchins kicking in a flat area and Sunseri throwing out passes on those flat trajectories? Some proof will be in today’s performance. Dread this upcoming loss!

Comment by Dan 72 10.16.10 @ 11:42 am

Expect the domers to be out in full force today. Expect Tiny Sunsery to fold under the pressure. Expect Baldwin to give less than 100%. Expect a close Pitt loss today.

Expect the worst, hope for the best and never be disappointed!

…hoping for the best – Hail to Pitt!

I hope the Shayne Hale rumor is not true. Well maybe doesn’t matter at this point.

I remember vaguely how big of a land he was several recruiting seasons ago.

I remember how he and Cam Saddler are related and Cam helped to “talk” Shayne into coming to Pitt.

I wonder if this guy was a bust or if this is just another fine example of the Wanny team not being ablt to “develop” his players.

DaveD,

Re: Hale. Zeise has mentioned a few times going back to camp that Hale had fallen behind in the rotation on the defensive line, especially after Murphy emerged early on. When Murphy was hurt, it allowed Hale a bit of an opportunity but apparently he hasn’t taken it. There was also some talk raised earlier in Zeise’s chat sessions about the possibility of moving him to offensive line, but that never materialized.

Zeise made it sound a few times like Hale had some motivational and possibly also some strength & conditioning issues and was probably in the doghouse because of those. Based on stuff that Zeise has written, it sounds more like a case of a player who hasn’t worked as hard as he needed to in order to get himself into the lineup.

I guess we’ll see and it’s too bad if it’s true…it would’ve been nice to see things work out for him here.
