Some Final Thoughts From New Hampshire

Filed under: Football — Chas @ 10:56 am

Just some things that I took notice or wanted to mention from the game.

Dan Hutchins’ punting is really improved. I was very impressed with the way he has placed the ball. He does, however, remain an untrustworthy force from outside of 40 yards. Two games and two misses from outside of 40 yards.

Kevin Harper has kicked the crap out of the ball on kickoffs. I have to wonder if/hope he will get a legit shot to at least take FGs from outside of the 40.

While the defense had a good day, overall, they came out once more looking flat. Just uninspired early. Even with the opening interception. The biggest worry is that the defense can either stop the run or stop the pass. They can’t seem to do both. It may be a factor in making the defense tentative. If they aren’t sure about what the opposing offense is going to do, they have to guess or hesitate to see what happens.

I don’t care if Savon Huggins or 5-star DEs and WRs want to commit to Pitt at this point, the only verbals Pitt should be focusing on getting and taking are offensive linemen. The interior line’s play is simply terrifying.

Tino Sunseri is performing well as the starting QB, but he is making two mistakes that even I could see. First, he tends to stare down his primary receiver, rarely doing check downs. Second, he almost exclusively looks to throw to this right. He doesn’t even glance left. I think the offensive coaches noticed, because when he came out in the second half, he stared all the way on the left and threw to that side. But he needs to use the entire field. Teams will start taking advantage of that.

Definitely saw much more of Sunseri’s mobility in the game. Very encouraging — and he’s going to need it this year.

Re-learned in just two games in that for all the talk of depth and talent stockpiled on the team, there is still a significant difference between even quality back-ups and the starters.

Parking is definitely more of a pain. Additional downside, with having groups spread out is that there is little incentive to hang-out afterwards and unpack all the gear. This only increases the amount of traffic trying to leave.

And that mobility is what truly got Sunseri the job. Bostick’s mental game and talents are there, but he’s not agile in the pocket. And with this swiss cheese OL you need that mobility in there to have a chance.

Comment by Brian 09.13.10 @ 11:10 am

Bostick wouldn’t/shouldn’t be the starter if ran a 4.4 forty. In addition to being too slow he also has a candy arm. He is not talented, physically speaking, at all. He might understand the offense inside and out, but in terms of talent he has no business being on a Division I football team.

That being said, he has handled the situation with tremendous character, maturity and the attitude and mentality of a team-player and I commend him for that.

Comment by JohnnyMajors 09.13.10 @ 11:46 am

Wow, leave it to a Pitt fan to put their back-up QB on total blast! To bolster Brian’s point, during the radio coverage of the game, the announcer stated that Cignetti was “excited” to have a mobile QB because now he can use his “entire” playbook. I think we are going to see more designed roll outs and QB draws as the year progresses. I like Tino and I think he should be starting because he is a better Football player. He is faster, he has a stronger arm (that does not mean Bostick has a “Candy Arm”). However, I suspect IF Pat Bostick ran a 4.4 40, he would be our starting QB…”No Business being on a Division 1 football team”…That is by far the most ridiculous comment I have ever seen posted on this blog.

Jason Douglass suspended indefinatley

Wow what idiots…both to Mr. Douglas and to our “candy arm” poster…it’s obvious nitters have discovered this blog and continually attempt to cause problems. Bostick was partially responsible for two of the best wins this program has seen (WVU and Notre Dame) in last 25 years. As for Douglas say hi to Division II football.

Comment by Marc 09.13.10 @ 1:31 pm

Dan Mason should be suspended as well for allowing Douglass to drive drunk

Comment by TX Panther 09.13.10 @ 1:51 pm

More info on Douglass…

link to pittsburghlive.com

He blew a .178 on a breathalyzer, which is more than twice the legal limit. He hit a pedestrian, drove off, and was arrested when he parked a few blocks away. The pedestrian was taken to the hospital with a head injury, but there was no further information about his condition.

Dumb, dumb, dumb!

Comment by Pantherman13 09.13.10 @ 1:57 pm

Wanny won’t suspend Mason because he is a starter. What the hell is wrong with these guys? Do they not realize how truly lucky they have it?

Comment by Bobby 09.13.10 @ 2:00 pm

Anyone have a link for a report on Mason being involved? The two stories I’ve seen don’t mention him.

Comment by Pantherman13 09.13.10 @ 2:08 pm

Never mind – just saw it at the P-G:

Best part of the article:

‘”Hey I play for Pitt football. … Please don’t arrest me,” Douglas told the officers, according to the affidavit.

Upon hearing this, the officers proceeded to not only arrest Douglas, but also beat him mercilessly while muttering something about a badly muffed kickoff against Utah.”

Ok, I made that second part up.

But seriously, just kick him off the team and give Todd Thomas a chance to step up maybe.

And I really hope that the guy he hit is ok.

Oh, and Shady was responsible for two of our biggest wins, not Bostick.

Comment by Jimbo Covert's my Dad 09.13.10 @ 2:15 pm

And beating a crappy Notre Dame team in the 293829382 overtime isn’t really that big of a win if you think about it anyways.

Comment by Jimbo Covert's my Dad 09.13.10 @ 2:16 pm

Sorry for the triple post, but I thought Douglas was a WR, I didn’t know he was a reserve tailback.

Comment by Jimbo Covert's my Dad 09.13.10 @ 2:18 pm

BTW – if you thought parking was a mess last Saturday, just wait for the next game. It seems like this happen’s at least once every season, but the Pirates play at 12:35 the day of the Miami game. So, I imagine we won’t be able to get into the lots 5 hours before game time like we’re supposed to. Pull over and start your tailgate on the sidewalk I guess.

Not to be outdone….

Idiots.

Comment by Bobby 09.13.10 @ 2:26 pm

I’d like to see Douglass make it to the NFL so the guy he nearly killed can sue that pro money right out of his punk a$$.

Comment by Chuck Morris 09.13.10 @ 2:49 pm

hey when the cops heard he played for Pitt, that called Sheard to come down and show him some art in a local gallery…

Comment by Pitt it IS 09.13.10 @ 3:17 pm

Very nice, Pitt it IS. Just like USC, Ohio State, Oregon, we know we’re moving up the football food chain when our a-hole index rises! These guys from Florida and Virginia are particularly good at shaming themselves it seems (see Dion Sanders, Ray Lewis, Vick Bros., Santonio, Iverson, Plaxico, Sheard, Douglas, etc.)

Comment by Matt N. 09.13.10 @ 3:48 pm

It was Bostick who scored the TD in the WV game, not Shady. At least give the kid the credit he deserves.

Comment by RMG 09.13.10 @ 3:49 pm

For those of you being tough on Douglas…and he deserves all he gets…just remember when we were in college and the many nights we drove having to squint with one eye because we were so drunk. We should all get on our knees and thank God we didn’t kill anyone….or not.

Comment by Dan 72 09.13.10 @ 4:04 pm

Different time, different era Dan 72. There was no “MADD” back then, no internet, and I sure couldn’t afford a car as a 19 year old. I also didn’t have a coach who was on me 24/7 about the right way to lead one’s life as a scholarship athlete in a Top 25 program. And Mason is JUST as much to blame. I guaran-damn-tee you he was as drunk at DouglASS was. These guys screwed up big time. If you are going to drink keep it on campus where you can hop on the student bus or walk home. And how in the hell, in this day and age, did a 19 year old get into a bar on the South Side?

Comment by Bobby 09.13.10 @ 4:27 pm

These kids have their tests taken for them yet they somehow can’t call to have someone take their keys.

Comment by TX Panther 09.13.10 @ 4:29 pm

Time to do the right thing: pay these kids for risking life and limb.

Comment by steve 09.13.10 @ 4:48 pm

Do we have a chance against Miami? What is the deal with Romeus? He must really be banged up. I’m not buying “back spasms” as an explanation. Does he has a disc injury, hernia, etc.? I hope Tags and DeCiccio are available for Miami. We will need all the depth we have. I think Sunseri will be a good player. He is doing just fine given his lack of experience and I really like his confidence, leadership, etc. However, I am worried about him eying down receivers. It could be devastating if one of those goes for a pick 6 against Miami. Let’s just keep getting better…

Comment by Jason05Pitt 09.13.10 @ 4:50 pm

Jason05Pitt, have you ever had a bum back during your lifetime? They’re no joke, even muscle spasms, and they tend to linger more than any type of injury, even ones considered more serious, i.e. torn acl.

Comment by dugdog 09.13.10 @ 8:03 pm

Yes, I currently have two herinated discs so that’s why I suggested a disc injury. Spasms are often a result of a disc injury, such as mine where they travel down my legs and to my knees and ankles. That’s why I am so concerned. The spasms are likely a result of a specific injury.

Comment by Jason05Pitt 09.14.10 @ 10:50 am

Many of us got drunk and stupid in college — no question there…but hitting a dude and then taking off..tough stuff. If they were less severe with on campus drinking rules, kids probably wouldn’t end up in cars elsewhere so much. My freshman year we could drink no problem, but they got fascist on us second year, so kids ended up roadtripping more and taking the ‘show on the road’. Educate, educate, educate.

Comment by Matt N. 09.14.10 @ 11:14 am

Strike One: He drove drunk. Strike Two: He hit a person while driving drunk. Strike Three: He left said person lying in the street…If I were DW, he would be gone for the year, and would have to do a lot to convince me to bring him back next year. The University, or the courts, may make the decision for DW.

Comment by HbgFrank 09.14.10 @ 12:35 pm

Jason Douglass should be kicked off the team. It’s one thing to get a DUI but to hit someone and leave the scene of an accident, thats bad judgment. Dan Mason should sit for a week for being caught in the car.

Comment by joel 09.14.10 @ 5:19 pm

Right on, Jason05. And… we get the horrible news today about Romeus’ back. I’m in the same boat as you, though the pain and spasms don’t travel down my legs… yet, but to this day I suffer from back problems from an injury I received 12 years ago in high school.
