Am I jumping the gun with the first weekend of Big East football not even completed? Perhaps, but I can’t shake that vibe. That this is a 2004 kind of year in the Big East.

UConn, the supposed darkhorse pick to win the Big East looked like Pitt against WVU/Pat White circa 2006 while being embarrassed by Michigan. Rutgers and WVU struggled in the first half before putting away their respective 1-AA foes 31-0.

Louisville had a nice cosmetic score late to make it a close loss to Kentucky. USF is failing to shut out their 1-AA foe. Cinci has to beat Fresno State on the road late tonight.

I mean, it is entirely possible that by the end of the night Syracuse could very well be the only Big East team to beat a 1-A foe — sort of. They are handling the Zips of Akron.

Yes, it doesn’t help that except for Louisville, all the 1-A matches played by Big East were on the road. It is not like any of the games should have been against top-10 teams.

This is not shaping up to be the kind of season for conference pride.

USF is actually losing to Stoney Brook (Stoney Brook??!? What the hell is that?)

God I hope they don’t pull an Ole Miss today.

I came across what in my opinion an on the money assesment the current Pitt program. The remarks comes from a sports scribe writing for a reputable sports web-site. It involes a quick review of the then upcoming Pitt-Utah game. Enjoy.
Thursday:

Pittsburgh at Utah (Versus): Game of the night. Pittsburgh, a dark horse contender to potentially make a lot of waves this year (we’re measuring potential to possibly be relevant now), facing off against an always competent (this century) Utah team in their final go-round in the Mid Mountain Western Athletic Conference-USA (MMWAC-USA) before joining greener pastures in the Pac-12. Anyone who’s been paying attention knows that Dave Wannstedt has an ability to underachieve and shit the bed with a regularity to which you can practically set your timepiece. So there’s no telling what will happen. Pitt’s defense this year should be superb, and they have an actual, legitimate stud at RB in the form of Dion Lewis, the black little brother of Warwick Davis. I don’t know jack shit about this year’s Utah team other than their uniforms are red. The real battle here is Dave Wannstedt’s mustache, said to hold untapped mystical powers, versus the kind sensibilities and magic underwear of the Mormon hordes. Football and the arcane all rolled up into one, it should be a great game to start things off on a Thursday

Chas, I assume you were drunk or sarcastic when you wrote this. Don’t you know by now how meaningless college football openers are?

Don’t you know that Tom Savage is now the most veteran QB in the BE, not to mention Pitt, UConn and Cincy opening all the road vs quality opponents. Perhaps if these 3 would have beaten YSU, FAMU and Jackosonville ST at home by 25 pts you would have felt much better.

Any football coach will tell you that the biggest improvement for any team is between Game 1 and 2. We’ll know much more by the end of the month how good or bad this conference is.

BTW, Dorin, Nate and Aaron all survived.

I agree, the Big East is weak.

Changing the subject, I am surprised that no one has commented how much we missed Elijah Fields on Thursday. How many times was DeCicco completely out of the play or our outside linebackers found wanting? It says a lot about Wanny that he dismissed Fields when he had to know the result. I am still encouraged that this team will be very good. They played very poorly and still almost won against a quality team.

Comment by gc 09.05.10 @ 8:11 am

UC was lucky to beat Fresno last year!

Comment by Kevin 09.05.10 @ 8:58 am

I think Chas is right on. The only way a Big East team will be relevant in December is to go undefeated. I do not believe Syracuse will do that.
Wannstedt has a legion of apologists.

Comment by TonyinHouston 09.05.10 @ 9:27 am

Wanny has a legion of apologists because no doubt this program is int its best shape since “81 .. and even then, Wanny provides stability (unlike Majors and Sherrill.) Sure we may can do a bit better but we can and have certainly done one helluva lot worse.

Comment by wbb 09.05.10 @ 10:14 am

the big east is the only conference that had the courage to schedule some decent competition in the first week.

Comment by Omar 09.05.10 @ 10:43 am

At least let’s wait until next week. Note that Oregon won at home yesterday 72 to 0. We’ll see how they fare at Tennesse. OSU had no trouble with Marshall and Miami had no trouble with FAMU; we’ll see how they do vs each other.

Comment by wbb 09.05.10 @ 10:48 am

I just want to know how some schools can start true freshman at qb and let them loose while a 3rd year soph. has to be eased into action and grow into the position?

Comment by J.P. 09.05.10 @ 10:52 am

J.P.,

At the risk of sounding like an apologist, the freshman QB was at home against 1AA Youngstown State, that’s why they could turn him loose.

The 3rd year soph. was on the road making his first start against a perennial contender.

I’m not saying I agree with keeping the reigns on Tino as long as they were, but the two situations aren’t even close.

Let’s see how PSU uses Bolden next week at ‘bama.

Comment by Jimbo Covert's my Dad 09.05.10 @ 11:37 am

If we aren’t willing to do everything necessary to win because we are on the road against a decent team the first game of the season……well, don’t play that team on the first game of the season. Did we do everything we could to win, yes in the 4th quarter. Play to win for 4 quarters, not 1.

Comment by Jon C 09.05.10 @ 12:43 pm

One more rant:

On a blocked kick: why do we always fall on the ball? It’s not like a fumble. They are obviously good at blocking kicks. Does this subject not come up in practice? Are we really so conservative that we are worried about the other team picking the ball up and running at least 20 yards past the LOS so much so that we aren’t willing to try and advance the ball? Especially when we know the offense is impotent? Ok I’m done ranting for one game.

Comment by Jon C 09.05.10 @ 1:00 pm

My stomach turned as I watched a minimum of three blocked punts returned for TDs on Sportscenter last night.

Comment by Chris 09.05.10 @ 1:48 pm

I missed most the live game, but I recorded it. I read Paul Zeise’s analysis and then watched it. Zeise was right-on about the LB’s. The LS’s were generally horrible, especially Mason. I think that he is mostly hype and bravado. He does not know how to control blocks. I wonder if the laundry will be able to get the grass stains out of the seat of his pants. Being a sophomore, he should be able to keep from going backwards whenever he makes contact with a blocker. I am very discouraged about our defense.

Comment by BigGuy 09.05.10 @ 1:50 pm

I didn’t say Pitt did the right thing Jon, but he was comparing our QB situation to PSU’s with Bolden, and the two weren’t even remotely close.

Off topic,

I noticed that our defense is dependent on big negative plays on 1st or 2nd down (like a big sack or penalty) in order to stop opposing offenses.

If we don’t get a team into 3rd and long, we usually aren’t stopping them.

Comment by Jimbo Covert's my Dad 09.05.10 @ 1:55 pm

The pressure is on to beat ND and Miami now. It would be an embarrassment if we lose to them and win the BE. I definitely would call that a failed season.

Comment by Chuck Morris 09.05.10 @ 3:14 pm

wbb,

i would take 1-0, beating a YSU by 25 over being 0-1 losing to a “quality” openent. Saying otherwise is so off the mark.

Yes Wanny has the program in a great place – it this single fact why Pitt fans want and expect MORE. Are you satisfied with just the level of success we have attained thus far? You have to continuously improve and staying where we are i.e. losing like this every year is simply NOT ok.

I love Pitt. Everything about Pitt. Always will. This is why its not ok to be where we are. I think that everyone else would share this point of view.

Comment by Pitt It Is 09.05.10 @ 4:03 pm

The Big East could get some redemption when USF plays at Florida next week.

Think about it, USF always pulls off one big time, noncon upset every year, and Florida’s offense looked awful in their first game against Miami-OH. It’s totally ripe for the picking!

Then, USF can do what they do ever year and get the bejesus kicked out of them by most of the Big East teams, who in turn look good because they beat someone who beat Florida.

So USF (in my best Leslie Nielson from Airplane voice), I just want you to know we’re all counting on you.

Comment by Jimbo Covert's my Dad 09.05.10 @ 6:10 pm

Totally agree with Pitt It Is…
Satisfied with being an above average program is NOT acceptable. Above average still includes the word “average”…We as Pitt fans that love the city, the University and everything about it all want the same thing…CHAMPIONSHIPS!

Comment by Outlaw 09.05.10 @ 6:54 pm

Change of Subject.

Is anyone having trouble with All Access Sports? I have been subscribing on yearly basis to at least listen to the Pitt games not televised. The new video format is not accepting my renewal. Can not get a response from customer service.

Anyone have a phone number to reach these people?

I want to listen to the NH game this Saturday.

Comment by Old Pitt Grad 09.05.10 @ 11:37 pm

I think some are missing the point about the loss, yes, other teams played lesser opponents and won, and we played a tough opponent, on the road and lost, but, it is what we looked like. Like we hadn’t even had a training camp, the missed tackles were atrocious!! I bleed blue and gold like the rest on here, the first three quarters, we could have been playing a pro team or a high school, WE DID NOT LOOK GOOD!!!! UCONN looked the same, not because they played Michigan, and, it looks like Rodriguez finally has the players he wants (that’s too bad, I was hoping for another disater for him), but just watching the game, UCONN looked lethargic, uniterested…………IMO

Comment by Dan 09.06.10 @ 12:27 am

Also, I am not underestimating Utah, tough team, tough program, sometimes though, you lose, and fundamentally you look good, a loss is a loss, gonna happen. We did not look good, at all. We’ll see about improvement from 1st game to 2nd. Against New Hampshire, it should be 56-10, 49-7 rout. No apologists, no bs, no nothing, this should be a blowout for just about any team from the bcs. We’ll see, if it’s a 4th quarter, down to the wire struggle, with a last second 24-21 victory, you’ll know what you got down there.

Comment by Dan 09.06.10 @ 12:36 am

Hey, last note, not a shot at anyone, we’re all frustrated, but, someone said “they were able to let the PSU quarterback go because of who they were playint”, and I totally agree with you. But, as fir Pitt, after the 1st quarter and maybe a little of the 2nd, you had to figure the coaches were gonna say, “let him go, we gotta play ball”!!! Just my opinion in a frustrated state of mind.

Comment by Dan 09.06.10 @ 12:44 am

Pitt is IT, whther 1-0 hosting inferior is better than 0-1 at challenging is irrelevant right now. The fact is that it was one game (just as it was just ONE play call with no guarantee of working if called differently) and it is time to move forward to each of the 11 remaining games .. and we have to keep improving (to quote our favorite BB coach.)

There seems to be a delusion of grandeur among the Pitt faithful that this was a possible MNC contender, an opinion NOT shared by anyone else, anywhere. Hell, I can remember such preseason thoughts in 01 before losing to a then unheard of USF team in the 2nd game (finished 7-5) as well as 03 until they lost to Toledo (2nd or 3rd game.)

Considering the recent recruiting efforts, the near future of this program bodes well with projected quality depth not seen around here for 3 decades … but Bama and OSU still does not start a walk-on center or a guard who has a good chance of being replaced by an ex DL RS frosh who has all of 4 weeks of preseason practice experience.

Comment by wbb 09.06.10 @ 8:48 am

Just when I thought I had pushed it completely into the subconscious, WBB rips “USF in 2001” right back. Ha. I got to watch that whole debacle from about ten rows up, 30 yard line, visitors bench side. I think Walt’s entire playbook that day consisted of shotgun draws.

I’ve kind of changed my thoughts on the overall state of recruiting thanks to some of the points made here the last couple of days. As a whole, I do think the recruiting is in good shape. Under Walt, it seemed to be a top-flight skill player here or there and a bunch of linemen who were debating MAC and Conf. USA schools.

We’ve obviously progressed beyond that and we’re now routinely beating established BCS-conference schools for recruits, so I think the overall quality of the classes have been going up. But I just wonder if there’s a ceiling there given the regional nature of the program, and that may be why there are more gaps in the depth chart than what you’d see at national powers like Bama and tOSU.

Wannstedt said when DeCicco got hurt he had to stay with the base defense against the spread in passing situations because otherwise he would have had to rely on very inexperienced backups. So, slow linebackers chase fast receivers and get burned. He needs to get these backups ready and trust them, or maybe we start 0-4.
