LiveBlog: Panthers-Utes

It’s the start of a new season of liveblogging. For those of you who were regulars last year, you will recall the bitching on my part about the wife not allowing me to put a refrigerator in the basement to keep my beer closer at hand. Our house came with appliances left behind, including a fridge. So there wasn’t even a need to buy one.

Well, it took almost a year, but she finally conceded it. Really, though, it wasn’t me. It was everyone else who told her that not taking advantage of having the extra freezer and refrigerator space. Now I have to find something else over which to whine.

As usual, the liveblog is below, but if you need/want to break it out from the site Click Here.

The fun will start around 8:15 to get the pregame talking out of the way.

Predictions?

I’m pushing 30, which means I’ve been around long enough for this team to have made a staunch pessimist. I’m gonna guess 31-17, Utah.

Comment by Jeff 09.02.10 @ 2:15 pm

All I know is that I picked up an ovenight shift for some OT. Here’s hoping VS. replays the game for my pleasure (or sorrow). Either way, LET’S GO PITT!

Comment by Shawn 09.02.10 @ 2:22 pm

This should be posted all over the Pitt locker room

“It’s great to bring them into our den, or whatever you want to call it, and give them a taste of what Utah football, Mountain West football is all about,” defensive end Christian Cox said. “I don’t think they really understand what they are getting themselves into.”

Comment by Henry Hynoceros 09.02.10 @ 2:33 pm

69-0 Panthers.

Predictions?

I’m pushing 52 and have seen it all regarding Pitt football!

Pitt 24 Utah 21

Comment by Jimbo B 09.02.10 @ 3:39 pm

35-7 PITT Karma from 2005.

Comment by POLE 09.02.10 @ 4:45 pm

I seriously, honestly, literally had a dream… two nights in a row in fact, in which Pitt prevailed 35-7, the exact opposite of the ’05 Fiesta Bowl. And that’s saying something, because I hardly ever remember my dreams.

Comment by dugdog 09.02.10 @ 5:16 pm

I hope your dreams come true.

Comment by Snala The Panther 09.02.10 @ 5:17 pm

Let’s GO PITT!

anyone know of a live video feed on line? I’m traveling without access to a bar or VS on tv…ARRRGGHHH

Comment by Pitt it IS 09.02.10 @ 5:28 pm

I am going to go out on a limb and make a wild prediction. I’m predicting that Rutgers will have a winning season this year. Their five non-conference games include Norfolk State (tonight), Florida international, North Carolina, Tulane and Army.

I just turned 60 and not only have I seen it all, I have witnessed most in person.

Just want to see a good game with a minimum of stupid mistakes and unforced errors.

I think Pitt will put up 35 and Utah 31.

Comment by Dan 72 09.02.10 @ 8:02 pm

Is the game streaming anywhere?

They need to keep running the Hynoceros. I think he’s more suited to Utah’s defense than Lewis is. Then after wearing them down, give it to Dion.

Comment by Cody 09.02.10 @ 9:12 pm

when did we rehire Cavanaugh as OC?

Comment by Henry Hynoceros 09.02.10 @ 10:25 pm

The wheels are falling off, are they really playing to win this game?

The defense is horrible!

Comment by Kevin 09.02.10 @ 10:31 pm

Tino does not look good – bad decisions, taking sacks, bad passes. Plus, he just looks too short. I’ve never been happy that we scheduled this as our first game – on the road!! The real blame goes to the people who scheduled this game. Let’s go Pitt – it’s not over yet! Too bad we didn’t get a TD after the blocked kick. That first FG miss may be big.

Comment by dish 09.02.10 @ 10:41 pm

Strong armed quarterback, great receiver, and they’re throwing 4 yard passes?

Comment by Mack 09.02.10 @ 10:56 pm

where’s baldwin? all those red zone plays and no fades/lobbs to the big guy. Did we lose the larry fitzgerald playbook for baldwin?

Comment by dish 09.02.10 @ 11:06 pm

Dish the problem is not Tino. Sorry you are far off. Maybe if we don’t put the kid in 3rd and 12 when the D knows we’re throwing we’d have more success throwing the ball.

Comment by Henry Hynoceros 09.02.10 @ 11:14 pm

Finally using Baldwin! and looking much better!

Comment by dish 09.02.10 @ 11:19 pm

Whoever wrote the article in the Pittsburgh paper that Frank Cignetti is the most important part of this team is correct. This game is completely on him. He didn’t decide to call a play action or give his QB a chance until 7min left in the 4th quarter. He ran his running back into the ground. (yes Tino threw a terrible pick at the end but this is on Frank.) He also forgot he has the best WR in the country on his team and then remembered in the fourth quarter. Insane.

Comment by Henry Hynoceros 09.02.10 @ 11:55 pm

we should’ve been more agressive on the last drive in regulation to go for a TD – too conservative again. we didn’t take advantage of turnovers. not a surprise loss – to open the season on the road to start the season in Tino’s first start

Comment by dish 09.02.10 @ 11:58 pm

Wanny would not have broken my heart if he had faked the Fg and gone for it late. He only put off the inevitable by going for the tie.
Still a terrific effort for the team and coaches.
Again I say we had no right to expect to win this game against Utah with a new QB, O line etc.

We’ll get em next time….Hail to Pitt

Comment by Dan 72 09.03.10 @ 12:01 am

So many missed opportunities in the red zone

Comment by Tony Cancilla 09.03.10 @ 12:05 am

Sunseri got some great experience tonight. Not gonna blame this on him, although the interception wasnt a bad decision, it was just a terrible pass. Here are my 2 bitches and then Im going back to my bottle.

1. How bout some play action passing on first down. Watching the replays, Utah’s defense was pursing to Lewis as soon as the ball was snapped.

2. Why the timeout after a first down catch with 38 seconds left. One, the clock is already stopped and two, you have them on the ropes. Their defense was staggering and we give them time to settle down. We had plenty of time. Im not gonna buy that it was called to calm Sunseri down. Especially after looking at our sidelines. Its like a F’in chinese firedrill over there. I think I saw Jamal Sheard in the huddle with DW talking strategy!

Comment by Z-Boy 09.03.10 @ 12:13 am

ANOTHER CLOSE GAME LOST THAT WE SHOULD HAVE WON. SOS!

Comment by catamount 09.03.10 @ 12:15 am

Once again, Wannstedt loses a close game that he could have won. You could set your watch to it.

Comment by Tubby 09.03.10 @ 12:22 am

I’m sorry, but I’m actually rather pleased with the out come of this game. I’ll admit, I actually turned the tv off and logged off the live chat after that Utah TD midway through the 4th, figuring a late route was on. Both teams played extremely sloppy at times throughout. And despite being ranked higher Pitt was not favored to win this game. They did exactly what they were expected to do, play tough and come away with a “good” loss in a tough place to play. Either team could have one, either team could have put the route on at any given time tonight, neither did. Both teams buckled down when they had to. Blah, blah, blah.

Comment by dugdog 09.03.10 @ 12:50 am

The O line looks like crap and needs a ton of work, Dan Mason needs to get his head in the game. Bring on New Hampshire, please!

Comment by dugdog 09.03.10 @ 12:57 am

Such a tough game to watch.

Comment by Gdf 09.03.10 @ 1:04 am

The good news: in about two months, basketball will be underway.

Comment by BigGuy 09.03.10 @ 1:04 am

Awful, oh, maybe the little comeback was ok, but horrible all the way around. I guess I set myself up, #15, possibly 5 #1 or #2 round draft picks. I sold my soul for Cignetti, looked like Cavanaugh until the 4th. Thought there was going to be roll outs, and bootlegs and, and, and just more disappointment. The game was not as close as the score or overtime would indicate. They have a lot of work to do, everywhere!!! I was pushing so hard to go to the Big Ten, or Acc, this past summer, we’re right where we should be, with Connecticut, Rutgers and something called USF!!!!!!! Sick, sick, sick. Like I said, my fault, bought into all the hype. Before you grill me, not upset that we lost, but, what we looked like for 3 quarters. Flat, no imagination, looked like we hadn’t been to camp at all????

Comment by Dan 09.03.10 @ 1:08 am

Hey, jerry, wherever you are, go ahead and wear the robot uniforms, doesn’t really matter.

Comment by Dan 09.03.10 @ 1:16 am

Last, and perhaps not helpful in any of this after a loss: Lewis, who demonstrated that he is, in fact, an excellent runner as a true Freshman (with my confidence that he’ll remain a “true” presence), made WAY TOO MANY SOPHMORIC mistakes this evening, esp when looking at his approach, style from last year. He is not “mature beyond his years,” when it comes to the game of running the football. He LOVES his team & would grind off a leg for Pitt, IMO.
Yet as stated from the start of this game, displayed some true immaturities. As it stands with Pitt football (esp under Wannstedt), this is a team TEAM SPORT. And too much dancing for the big play ala Shady. And I think only that because he is such a really good kid (Lewis) who doesn’t want to disappoint his coaches & peers, that he early-on attempted ‘big plays’ when the situation did NOT call for Big Plays. The OLine was satisfactory. Our fridge QB played better than advertised by his coaching staff. And I say that had Dion Lewis run DOWNHILL like he did last year, the game would have had different outcome. And for Lewis to understand this and move fwd from a very disappointing performance, the coaching staff will have had to have paid notice to his gametime mistakes.
I am sure they did. Am sure you’ll read it tomorrow, too, in pghPG et al. Once more, though, and in sum, as said, whereas there is a glaring lack of both talent & depth in the secondary, and a new QB under center, Pitt relies on Lewis’ NS downhill run style. They do not, however rely on his ‘big play’ potential: ability as they would in LaRod’s case, in Cam Saddlers’, or, for that matter, as one might with Noel Devine on the roster.
Ray Graham is that kind of player. But he is, evidentally, with injury more seeious than perhaps any anticipated. If he had been ready to play tonight, yes, you’d have seen him.
