Embrace the Pressure

In case you were somehow thinking that Pitt would not be the preseason favorite of the Big East, the media poll results blew that out of the water.

1. Pittsburgh (22 first-place votes) 190
2. Cincinnati 142
West Virginia (1) 142
4. Connecticut (1) 131
5. Rutgers 99
6. USF 79
7. Syracuse 41
8. Louisville 40

That’s 22 first place votes out of 24 for Pitt. The Panthers, narrowly were the choice last year. In the prior 19 years of Big East football media polls, the preseason pick has won it only 9 times.

Cinci gets respect and no respect. Everyone expects them near the top of the Big East, but no one thinks they will win it.

The one guy who voted UConn? A USF beat writer.

USF getting knocked down to 6th is something of a surprise as Brian Bennett has noted the Bulls have been a bit overrated at times — probably owing to their potential with Florida talent. At least that they were that far back from 5th and Rutgers.

Rutgers is roughly where they were predicted in the preseason mags.

Congrats to Syracuse for finally not being picked last in the conference.

I’m surprised WVU didn’t get more respect in this poll. The defense they are returning is going to be scary and if Geno can play, they are going to be a tough team for anyone to beat.

I’d rather have Pitt picked in the middle of the pack, I just get the scary feeling we’re getting setup for a fall. That has how the Wanny era has gone, build up expectations and then smash the hopes of the fans to pieces, over and over again.

BnG… your fears are shared by many… as being a Pitt fan for 10 years… I know the feeling all to well. (hoops and football)

9/19 is better than i would have expected. i wonder how often the prohibitive favorite (80% or more of the votes) has actually won the conference.

also, i wonder how many pitt fans expect the panthers to win the conference. i guess i’m not the only one who is waiting for a shoe to drop…

beating utah and miami would be a good start towards nat’l respectability

Before Wanny we never had expectation. It’s what makes being a fan and alumni soo much more fun. Every year is a roller coaster with the anticipation just to get on the ride.

FYI, Noel Devine didn’t make media day because he was sick in his hotel room. He didn’t take his medication either, sorry, bad seafood.

No matter how good your defense is if you dont’ have a good qb teams will struggle to win. This is the beauty of college football. You get all the pieces in place but you have to start a rookie qb. I am really pysched for this year but young qb’s make me worry. Of course if Lewis runs like he did last year it will open up some passing lanes. This will be a very interesting season for sure

Sunseri can’t be worse, talent wise, than Stull.

But last year, I did notice some of that “wiley veteran who knows his limitations and can win games”-quality in Stull. That’s what Tino needs to develop.

Freebird –

I think Noel Devine and Huggins were in the same suite at the hotel…

Is there any plus to this poll? All it does is leave seven teams and fan bases “disrespected” and sends the 8th into “woe is me, we’re screwed now” mode. No matter where Pitt was placed in this poll we would all complain. The only people who are happy today are the Pitt marketing and ticketing people.

Jimbo hit it. Stull knew what he could and couldn’t do. All I hear about Sunseri is how he can make all the throws, so you know he believes he can make all the throws. I think this is going to lead to Tino releases some balls he shouldn’t and ending up with a good chunk of interceptions. Hopefully the amazing athletic ability of our receivers will bail him out a few times to balance things out.

The big difference in Stull last year was Cignetti. He was in his ear constantly to make only the safe throws. Tino has been listening to Cignetti for a year, he knows what’s expected. I’m not worried.

The biggest potential issue is the offensive line, they are pretty inexperienced and VERY THIN. One injury and Tino will be running for his life. Does no good to have a talented QB, heisman candidate RB and a first round WR if the line can’t block anyone.

anybody know where I can buy the best pitt gear? looking to stock up..

Pitt had huge expectations going into Larry Fitzgerald’s sophmore year in 2003. Wanny wasn’t around for that.

Comment by Omar 08.03.10 @ 10:00 pm

[…] will Pitt do? They earned all but two of the media’s first place votes, but are three point dogs to Utah in week one. They also have Miami and Notre Dame on the schedule. […]

Disagree (to a point) about Cignetti & Stull. I agree that Cignetti’s approach made some difference in Stull’s production – especially Cignetti’s playcalling inside the opponent’s 30 yard line.

However, I believe that the real reason for Stull’s increase in production and leadership was the fact that he was in his second year as a starting QB. IMO you can’t underestimate the value of having one full year of starting experience and progress under your QB’s belt.

That saying “The game slowed down between my first and second year” is stated for a reason. Expect some mistakes and angst with Sunseri this year, especially in those first three games folks.

Where I think we’ll see the real Tino Sunseri is in 2011. Not to say he can’t do well this first year – many QBs do but the trend is for a first year QB to be adequate… which with our other talented offensive weapons and Cignetti’s savvy may just be enough.

Sunseri has been in the program for 3 years. He should be better than the Bill Stull who finished up the 2008 season. The 2008, pre-concussion Bill Stull was playing pretty well. Hopefully Tino can be as good, or better, than that version of Stull. Last year Stull was fantastic throughout the season.
