Sheards of Glass

Well, that’s something isn’t it?

Garrett Brown, a city officer working an off-duty detail, said Mr. [Jabaal] Sheard, listed at 6-feet-4 and 260 pounds, ignored his commands to stop fighting Edward Parker, 27, of Stanton Heights.

Officer Brown said Mr. Sheard kept punching Mr. Parker as the officer and other city officers tried to break up the fight. After absorbing several of Officer Brown’s baton blows to the body, Mr. Sheard picked up Mr. Parker by his clothing and threw him through the glass door of the gallery, then continued to punch him in the face as he lay bleeding on the floor inside the business, according to an affidavit.

Officers finally subdued both men with OC spray.

Not surprisingly, Sheard has been immediately and indefinitely suspended from the team.

Congrats on disrupting what had been a quiet boring summer off-the-field for Pitt football. All by his lonesome, Sheard has tallied 7 Fulmer Cup points for Pitt. Not enough to make the top-10 programs at this point, but just on the outside. There’s more work to be done.

There is certainly more to this story.

Sheard should be suspended, and I have no problem if Coach Wannstedt tosses him off the team or suspends him for the season.

2 am on a Saturday night/Sunday morning, is not the problem. He’s legal and even as a star football player at Pitt, he has the right to party like other college kids. Yes, I know, nothing good ever happens at that point.  The brawling on the South Side kind of drives that home.

I can’t help but be a little curious about this part.

Parker, who was cut and bruised on his head and face, refused to go with medics, but his girlfriend told police she would drive him to a hospital. Both men were treated for the pepper spray at the scene, and Sheard was taken to Allegheny County Jail. The damage to the gallery front door is estimated between $600 and $1,000.

To recap that. A man was beaten — hard — and thrown through a glass door. Still being beaten. Then pepper sprayed as police were trying to break it up. This beating was inflicted by a potential NFL 1st rounder. In most cases you would have people begging for the ambulance for a scratch to build that potential lawsuit.

And yet, the guy refused to be taken by medics on the scene to a hospital. Instead his girlfriend claims she would take him. I do want to know if the person went to a hospital.

Regardless, that doesn’t excuse Sheard. Whatever the deal is with the victim, the guy was still the victim in this case.

There is still more to be concerned.

The brawl broke out along East Carson Street in front of the LaFond Gallery.

An off-duty officer who was alerted to a group of men fighting immediately called for backup. When the officer got to the scene, he said he noticed only two men, Jabaal Sheard and Edward Parker, fighting.

[Emphasis added.]

At least if there were any other Pitt players involved, they were smart enough to get the hell out of there.

/looks over roughed out depth chart.

/sighs

Shayne Hale and then Brandon Lindsey obviously have a chance to step in and fill the spot. Greg Romeus is going to be looking at a lot of extra attention assuming Sheard is not back.

The other possibility is incoming freshman T.J. Clemmings. The kid is one of the top players in Pitt’s recruiting class. Looks like he could get a surprisingly early chance to make an impact.

come on Jabaal there is no reason for this

I’m eager to find out some more details on what caused it. Its a little odd that Sheard would continue beating the guy and throw him through a window while being pounded with a nightstick then also (as mentioned) the victim not wanting to go the hospital. According to PPG they’re considering charges against the victim too.

Stanton Heights, home of Bob Smizik.

It’s called ‘roid rage, people. It makes people do crazy stuff.

Comment by Jeff 07.19.10 @ 5:29 pm

Actually, hats off to the tough mfer that got the crap pounded out of him by Sheard and refused to go to the hospital.

He was beaten severely, thrown through a glass window, and then was beaten severely some more by a 260 lb beast!!

TJ Clemmons, Brandon Lindsey, Shane Hale. Gentlemen, please step into the batter’s box.

Comment by Gas 07.19.10 @ 7:05 pm

Difference between Sheard and Fields is that this (to the best of my knowledge) is Sheard’d first offense.

He’ll play this year, it’s just a question of when…

Comment by Jimbo Covert's my Dad 07.19.10 @ 7:07 pm

Well, it seems Mr. Sheard will miss the New Hampshire game…

Comment by Patrick 07.19.10 @ 7:51 pm

Well, he’s gone. That was unexpected.

There is no way he cannot receive severe discipline for this. The only way to save his job would have been to immediately throw his hands up and tell the officers he was cool. Sorry guys, if the cops have to use pepper spray to subdue a player during a brawl in which a guy went through a glass door — that player is out for the season.

Comment by Chuck Morris 07.19.10 @ 9:38 pm

Good news is he didn’t hit a cop. From some the accounts I have heard, both men were getting hit by police batons trying to break it up. The other guy will probably get charged too. I am sure he will be suspended, but I doubt he will be out for the season. Lets remember Adam Gunn last year. Similar situation. Hopefully there are witnesses out there that come forward saying he was provoked or the other guy instigated the fight. The media likes to over sensationalize anything involving an athlete. I am not defending Sheard, but think he should be given his fair day in court to share his side of the events.

Comment by Pidoublet 07.19.10 @ 10:00 pm

That we only had one incident this summer is probably commendable.

Comment by Dan 72 07.19.10 @ 10:25 pm

I would’ve been happier if he’d of thrown Roethlisberger through the window…..

What could cause a man to (possibly) throw his future away over a stupid argument? I don’t care what it was about, nothing is worth risking everything you’ve worked your butt off for. Let’s hope that only alcohol was involved so he at least can say he wasn’t thinking clearly and overreacted due to being loaded. Dumb move Jabaal!

Comment by Annie 07.20.10 @ 12:19 am

Jimbo – sorry, but this is Sheard’s second run-in with the law while at PITT. In Jan of 2008 he was cited for underage drinking.

Annie – you’d be shocked at what people do – some a lot older and supposedly wiser – than Sheard at his age 21. I sit on Disciplinary Boards in the Military quite often and am still appalled (after almost 20 years of experience) at the stupidity, arrogance and greed of Man.

Comment by Reed 07.20.10 @ 5:03 am

The only way Sheard ducks this is if he pulls a Good Will Hunting. Anyone know if he’s smart enough to win the Fields Medal?

Comment by Steve 07.20.10 @ 6:36 am

I think NFL scouts will view this as Sheard having an excellent motor.

Comment by Pittastic 07.20.10 @ 8:05 am

I guess Sheard figured he had to keep fighting until he heard a whistle.

Comment by Twink22 07.20.10 @ 9:07 am

No excuses for Jamal but as I look back on my time at Pitt, I cannot believe half the things I did while in school! A wonder I am alive!
Let those of you without sin cast the first stone!

Comment by Dan 72 07.20.10 @ 9:15 am

Interesting that no witnesses have tweeted rumors about what started the argument. No camera phones around either. Youtube is waiting. In any case no excuses for this behavior. Hopefully Sheard is willing to take his medicine and be contrite for the good of the team.

Comment by gc 07.20.10 @ 9:28 am

I’m sure the other dude started it. Looks like Sheard finished it.

How much better would this story be if:

A. Eugene Parker was the drug dealer/roommate of Elijah Fields who posted the twitpics to Elijah’s account (Elijah claims someone else posted all those pictures).

B. Eugene Parker went to West Virginia and Eugene Parker threw the quarter that hit Tom Herrion in the eye.

C. Eugene Parker was the referee in the Cincinnati game who flagged Sheard for unecessary roughness in the 4th quarter

Comment by David 07.20.10 @ 9:52 am

David that’s hilarious!

Great title to this post BTW.

Sounds like a party at Delta Sig back in my day

Comment by square44 07.20.10 @ 11:27 am

The real problem with this is that in all likelihood, it’s not over. People from the east side of Pittsburgh, as Mr. Parker is, don’t generally handle things through the police or any other formal channels. Unfortunately, Sheard is going to have to watch out for this guy and his buddies over the course of the year. If you go to Mr. Parker’s Facebook page, you can already see the wall comments reflecting something along those lines.

Comment by worried 07.20.10 @ 11:49 pm

There are about 500 Edward Parker’s on Facebook, how’d you which one??

Comment by Dan 07.21.10 @ 10:18 am

i got mugged by a bunch of dudes and beat to a pulp and refused an ambulance too. it’s too expensive, as i didn’t have health insurance at the time. that doesn’t mean the mugging didn’t happen. i went to a clinic the next day and got some x rays and pain meds.

has anyone ever known a good person to do something like this… i’m guessing no. everyone i know whose ever acted like a thug is a thug.

Comment by ryan 07.21.10 @ 12:22 pm

@ Dan – I went to Peabody High School with Eddie Parker.

Comment by worried 07.21.10 @ 6:12 pm

@ ryan

It’s impossible to pass judgement from so little information. Let’s avoid calling anyone a thug just yet.

Comment by Kyle 07.22.10 @ 10:01 am

ryan did you ever stop to think the reason this Mr. Parker ddnlt want to go to the hospital was because he possibly had drugs in his system? If he had blood testing done and it came out that he was on drugs then maybe that played a part in the situation.
