Odds and Predictions

Briefly, because I have been out all morning and then lots of other things to do the rest of the day and evening.

Pitt has the most talent in the Big East. There can be quibbles at certain spots as to which player is better, but in terms of overall talent and depth there isn’t much disagreement.

Will that translate into winning the Big East and a BCS bowl? That’s the big question.

DawgSports believes it, and has Pitt as one of the teams he thinks will actually exceed expectations.

As for gamblers, well that is different. BetUS.com actually makes the odds of winning the Big East a 3-way tie with WVU and UConn at +250.

Pitt welcomes back the most explosive offensive player in this league in running back Dion Lewis. As a freshman last year, Lewis burst onto the scene with 1799 yards and 17 touchdowns. He is joined on this offense by Jonathan Baldwin, a naturally gifted receiver who hauled in a team high 57 catches last year, and Mike Shanahan, who like Baldwin is a matchup nightmare at 6’5. The defense is anchored by Greg Romeus, a defensive end who is all but a certainty to lock up All-Big East, if not All-American honors.

The one concern with Pitt is the uncertainty at quarterback, where sophomore quarterback Tino Sunseri takes over for graduated senior Bill Stull.

If Sunseri can somehow shake off his inexperience there’s reason to like the Pitt Panthers. They are no doubt the favorite in the football expert picks.

As for winning the entire BCS? Well, then Pitt is one of their darkhorse picks at +5000. Alabama is the big favorite at +450 followed by Ohio State at +600. Boise is actually close at +1000.

I’m always very pessimistic and yes sometimes a cynic but I do feel good about this year’s squad.

Sunseri is not the optimum height of a prototypical pro-style QB, but neither was Doug Flutie or Drew Brees. I agree he’s not 6’2”; but he is darn close to 6’0”.

He has cannon for an arm, he is mobile and he is a winner!

“You Know,”….so Gary McGhee just mentioned “You Know” over 50 times in a five minute Pitt piece on 93.7 FM The Fan. I realize these kids are still in school, but maybe somebody needs to pull this kid over and let him know how unprofessional “You Know” sounds….You know.

Comment by Marco 07.15.10 @ 8:39 pm

You know, I’d cut Gary some slack. He’s a hoopster, amybe an NBA’er someday. Whatever, he ain’t gonna be an elocutionist.

He also seems to be somewhat insecure. Let’s build him up, not tear him down.

Comment by Steve 07.15.10 @ 9:45 pm

I don’t think I’ve ever encountered elocutionist and ain’t in the same sentence.

I just got an e-mail from the Pitt Athletics Department. Said that there was a special announcement to be made on 93.7 tomorrow at 8 am and that was it. No other details. Does anyone think it could be the radio deal or could it possibly be something bigger?

Comment by mjb 07.16.10 @ 1:43 am

It’ll be the radio deal.

Comment by Reed 07.16.10 @ 5:45 am

square44, so “gonna” is OK?

Comment by Steve 07.16.10 @ 7:31 am

According to a Borghetti tweet, it’s the radio deal:

“@PittBorghetti The new flagship station for the Pitt Panthers: 93.7 The Fan!”

Comment by Carmen 07.16.10 @ 8:39 am

How many days to opening kickoff? I am getting rather pumped already this season. I need a countdown.

Comment by Freebird 07.16.10 @ 10:30 am

Maybe they’re going to announce the 5.5% tuition hike that the post-gazette reported this morning.

Comment by Jeff 07.16.10 @ 1:27 pm

49 Days

I see that Wanny got his mandatory 5’6 RB for 2011

he had to beat out the likes of Marshall and Bethune Cookman for this guy, but we have learned to give Wanny the benefit of the doubt here

Crap, W.T.F. come on guys!

Dummy! Not now what the hell!

Comment by POLE 07.18.10 @ 11:16 pm

Why is it always the best players that do the dumbest things?

Come on Jabaal, you have a great future, think about what you’re doing!

Comment by Coach Ditka 07.19.10 @ 7:15 am

Thinga were on a roll and then this happened. So unnecessary. I thought that Jabaal was smarter than that.

Comment by Fear The Mustache 07.19.10 @ 9:31 am

we have lots of defensive line players, if this turns out that Jabaal is in the wrong, send a message. We can’t afford to look like PSU west.

Comment by Kurt 07.19.10 @ 9:43 am

A great fb season preview here:

Which includes this optimistic note:
“Projected Top Reserves: By this time next year, 6-2, 240-pound junior Brandon Lindsey will be in a position to win a starting job at defensive end. For now, he’ll be one of the first reserves off the bench and a situational pass rusher. Showing outstanding speed and a sudden first step, he chipped in 18.”

Comment by Steve 07.19.10 @ 9:54 am

Wow. This is bad.

Thanks for the article freebird. This is not good at all. If he isnt gone from the team he will be gone for most of the year. What a shame. I just read an article a week ago boasting about Sheards potential as a First Round pick next year…what a bonehead. When will these players learn that they just cant put themselves in these situations? DW has been pretty firm in his discipline, the only thing that may save Sheard is that (as far as I remember) this was his first problem in his time at Pitt.

Comment by Coach Ditka 07.19.10 @ 11:29 am

Can’t get anymore public than throwing someone through a window on East Carson Street in front of the Birmingham Bridge.

There has to be a story here. The other guy was 27 with his girlfriend. Jabaal had to be pissed at something.

Comment by freebird 07.19.10 @ 11:44 am

What an assclown.

Comment by Jeff 07.19.10 @ 11:53 am

Its one thing to beat someone down – maybe the guy deserved it? but when you resist arrest and continue fighting with the police there its a much bigger offense…

Comment by Coach Ditka 07.19.10 @ 12:13 pm

To be fair, the timing of this couldn’t be better. At least it isn’t during the season. If Jabaal is a knucklehead and he’s guilty, then we have to move on. But at least we have all of camp to prepare to move forward without him.

Comment by maz. 07.19.10 @ 12:47 pm

Looks like Shayne Hale’s time is now…IF all allegations are true, DW has been fairly direct in his punishment for such actions. Sheard is a true Senior, he could be suspended for the year and brought back next year. He would not be wise to opt for next years draft because they are putting a high premium on the character of high draft picks. I’m not really surprised by this in our program, or anyone elses program. Frankly, between the ages of 18 and 22 I did some really stupid things. Being a football or basketball player does not make you more mature and may put you in more situations to make stupid decisions. I’m not saying Sheard should get away with this. In fact, if the facts are proven true, then he should be suspended for the year. If he will not accept that, he should be kicked off of the team and out of the school. My only point is that I am not surprised by this.

Comment by HbgFrank 07.19.10 @ 1:07 pm

Hbg:
IF these allegations are true, he could be looking at more than a year of jail time. In fact, the low end of the sentencing range for an Agg. Assault conviction for a first time offender is 3-6 years! To get the agg. assault charge to go away, if these allegations are true, he would likely have to plead the a lesser offense with some jail time, maybe something like 6 – 12 months. He’s done here at Pitt if this is true.

Comment by crackbaldo 07.19.10 @ 1:31 pm

I was reading on Scout that this situation is almost identical to Adam Gunn’s scrape with the law last summer. Hopefully, the charges will be dismissed and it will be handled internally. If my memory serves me right, Gunn didn’t miss any games and was named captian of the defense.

Comment by Fear The Mustache 07.19.10 @ 1:34 pm

I know times have changed, but i cant help but think Bill Fralic heard this news and said, “so whats the problem?”

Comment by Z-Boy 07.19.10 @ 1:51 pm

Chi Chi of Quinque’s would’ve nipped this in the bud, you’re right Z-Boy.

Comment by Steve 07.19.10 @ 1:55 pm

I stand corrected. This article on the PG website doesn’t bode well for Jabaal.

He’s just a kid, c’mon fighting with the cops, and still throwing the guy threw a window, and then going in and punching him some more!! Just shennanigans!!………..wow, I must have been a real nerd!!!…….and still am!!!! What a shame for the team.

Comment by Dan 07.19.10 @ 3:15 pm

There’s no way he gets a felony conviction out of this if he has a semi competent defense attorney.
