Another From New Jersey

The commits from New Jersey keep piling up. The latest, Defensive Tackle Marquise Wright.

Wright, a 6-foot-3, 270 pound defensive tackle from Paramus Catholic in New Jersey, had several other offers, most notably from from Florida State, Miami, Oklahoma, West Virginia, Maryland and Penn State. His final decision came down to Pitt, Maryland and Penn State.

Now here’s where the vagaries of recruiting rankings come in to play.

Scout.com has him as a 3-star recruit and the 21st best player at his position. Seems solid enough, and when you look a the list of teams pursuing him you have to figure that he is either due for a significant upgrade by the end of the summer or he has a lot of very raw potential.

ESPN.com/Scouts, Inc. also has him as a moderately good prospect with a score of 79 (Insider subs.).

He flashes some good raw athleticism, but can tend to get tall out of his stance and needs to keep better pad level to maximize his ability. As a pass rusher he can be active with his weapons, but needs to be sure to not attack the whole man. Wright is kid who could offer some versatility in where he is played on the defensive line. He has some good tools, but needs to work to be more consistent in areas. He is a prospect who shows good upside as a defensive lineman.

Then there is Rivals.com, which has him as a 4-star, but also the #2 prospect out of New Jersey. Naturally, since they have him ranked the highest, and Wright has committed to Pitt their rankings are most accurate in terms of Wright.

Worth noting on the Rivals.com list of top-30 NJ prospects, 4 of the top-14 (Wright #2, Bill Belton #6, Quinton Alston#10, and Gary Nova #14) have verballed to Pitt.

And to think in May, there was concern over when Pitt would get some verbals.

With those offers, it’s clear that Scout and ESPN has missed the boat on this kid. The people who actually have real jobs that depend on getting talent all want the kid. Enough said.

Totally Hafley.

I apologize, Jeff, for putting you on the spot last summer re: Holley.

You are the man!

June is always a huge month for PITT verbal committs because of their camps. No surprise here.

since the freaking Pittsburgh Basketball Club Web site seems to be irrevocably damaged, can anybody confirm that the pro-am games are Mon and Wed. this week and next from 7-10?

Comment by Carmen 06.29.10 @ 8:32 am

Yes. Pro Am is playing this week, 6-28 and 6-30 in Green Tree first game @7, last one starts @9. They are not scheduled to play on Monday 7-5, but they will be running again on 7-7.

Went last night, biggest crowd I’ve seen. Quality of basketball has improved too. Impressed with Cameron Wright. He played very well with McGhee. He seems to have a really good court sense. Good ball handler, passer, smart, fast. He will need to significantly improve his defensive effort if he wants to get some time this season. Zanna continues to improve, Nas looked very strong. Patterson was solid.

Thanks very much!

This is the most talent the Pro-Am league has had in the past few years. All of the games are entertaining, not just the ones with the Pitt stars. Duquesne and Robert Morris have some really talented kids coming up.

Whaddya say, NBA? Time for Pittsburgh franchise?

Comment by Steve 06.29.10 @ 9:37 am

Steve, the NBA will never bring a team here becaude not enough people care. In the winter I watch two sports, Pitt men’s basketball and the Pens. I never turn on an NBA game and most of this area does the same. That’s what makes Pitt’s basketball team so great because it doesn’t have to compete with a pro team like our football team does. Hail To Pitt!

I’ve noticed that Pitt has been pulling some nice football recruits lately, specifically ones that have offers from more powerhouse schools. I am wondering how much the weak Big East plays into their decisions? Maybe they figure their best chance to play in a BCS game is with Pitt? Of course, you can’t discount the fact that over the last decade Pitt has churned out some real quality NFL players almost every year.

Coach, probably the 2nd major selling point right behind the pro style strategy.

To say this is the best talent the Pro-Am has had is ridiculous. WVU isn’t even there. There is just one high-major team represented in the entire thing and the rest are small college talent. I guess at least we know that Pitt can beat Edinboro or Gannon.

[…] Pitt has had a rather good month of June with recruiting. Not some sort of Texas recruiting to fill out the class in May, but better than simply solid. Culminating in the last couple days with a highly sought, top DT tackle out of New Jersey. […]

I’ll say it again – this is the best talent the league has had from top to bottom. Yes the WVU kids aren’t playing, and there is no Sam Young or DeJuan Blair, but the teams are all full of quality guys worth watching, and the games are highly competitive. Don’t forget there are pros playing as well to make up for the WVU guys. Levance Fields, Keith Benjamin, Ben MacCauley, Myron Brown all played
