Herrion to Herd

Well, it seemed that now former Pitt assistant head coach Tom Herrion was behind Buzz Peterson for the Marshall job. Peterson has the head gig at Appalachian State and had been head coach at Tennessee before Bruce Pearl. Apparently Peterson turned it down because of contract terms.

Instead it goes to Tom Herrion, and I can’t help but admit that this is a very good opportunity for Herrion. He is an outstanding recruiter and a solid coach.

His time at the College of Charleston did not work out, but it wasn’t for failing to recruit. It had a lot more to do with the culture of the school and dealing with boosters. He’s had a chance to learn more and the culture of Marshall will probably be a better fit.

So, good luck to Coach Herrion and beat the Hoopies.

I don’t know who exactly Coach Dixon will be targeting to be an assistant. No shortage of recently fired (or about to be fired) head coaches that can recruit.

Fred Hill was very good at that part, but given it was Pitt baseball that led to his downfall, I’m guessing AD Pederson isn’t going to sign off on that. Dino Gaudio will obviously be in demand, but I’m guessing he takes a year or so before getting back into it.

I don’t think Orlando Antigua is coming back as an assistant. I can almost guarantee that Kentucky is paying much better than Pitt can. Besides, I’d like to see Pitt look elsewhere.

this is a pretty courageous move by Herrion being that Marshall plays WVU every year.

Herrion better win there or those fans are gonna hit him with quarters.

Tom Herrion was an asset at Pitt. Not only at recruiting, but assisting Coach Dixon with game strategy as well. Of course, the focus now becomes one of choosing his replacement. There are, indeed, many persons from whom to choose. My hope and suggestion is that the powers that be will select a coach who is adept at mentoring tall players. The Panthers have two who come to mind(MaGhee and Taylor) with Mike Wallace debating between Pitt and Minnesota. With a tweak or three the Steel Town hoopsters could claim it all in two or three years. Best wishes to Pederson and Jamie Dixon. Happy hunting!!! George from Columbus which is NOT enjoying the power of one Pedro Alvarez.

OOps! Two spelling errors. Sorry. I meant, of course Gary McGhee and potential signee, MAURICE Wallace. Dante Taylor could revert to his former position at Power Forward. George

Pitt is a MUCH, MUCH wealthier school than Kentucky. The misconception that Pitt can’t pay coaches or assistants is just that, a myth. How much do you think Kentucky can afford to pay an assistant when their snake oil salesman coach is making $4 million.

Furthermore, Jamie Dixon has replaced enough assistant coaches without losing any strategy battles to make me think he can do just fine on his own. Hopefully, he replaces the fine Tom Herrion with an equally accomplished recruiter.

George, how can you not like Pedro. Two more tonight.

Omar — What supports the basketball budgets? I checked the NCAA 2009 Men’s Basketball Attendance leaders and Ky was #1 with 22K per game while Pitt is #33 with 11K per game. That’s not just ticket sales, that’s a lot more people buying t-shirts and the such. I know there is more to it than just butts in seats. Do you know where to find the basketball budgets? I would be interested in how they compare.

Rev Geo, I always very much enjoy your offerings on this blog but need to advise of one more error on your original post …. it is Maurice ‘Walker’

As far as typos go, I certainly have made more than my share … much more due to my typing ability than my spelling.

Comment by wbb 04.10.10 @ 4:14 pm

.. and it looks like the real Maurice Walker may commit to Minnesota on his visit there this weekend. That would be a bummer – Pitt could use a 270 lb beast in the middle!

Considering Pitt officially does not have a space for the commits who have signed NLIs right now, I don’t see how Walker can be a Pitt commit at this point

Rupp Arena seats 11,000 more people than the Pete. Naturally the per game revenue will be higher. That’s simple math.

Here is some simple math as well: Pitt endowment as of the end of fiscal year 2009 $1.9 billion; University of Kentucky endowment $668 million.

Comment by Omar 04.10.10 @ 6:26 pm

When does Pitt ever touch its endowment for athletic purposes?

Comment by TonyinHouston 04.10.10 @ 7:17 pm

Alcofan: I did not communicate well about Pedro. He is off to a fabulous start at Indy. It is the Clippers’ fans who don’t like him. I’m a transplanted “Burger” and I think he is a coming superstar. George who resides in Columbus, but whose soul belongs to the city of the fabled Three Rivers.

Jamie Dixon has built Pitt into a destination Program…I have no doubt that our entire coaching staff will remain top notch for well into the future.

Comment by HbgFrank 04.11.10 @ 1:00 pm

Doke has a great list on his blog about potential assistants. Don’t know the link, though.

Comment by Mark 04.11.10 @ 1:07 pm

…not to mention booster club activity. Kentucky has a rabid national booster network that has no problem scaring up cash. Case in point: A large wad will appear in 2013 to pay Calipari to go away after John Wall tells reporters at the NBA all-star game about his college experience, a la OJ Mayo and Chris Webber.

based on just what I read here, my money is on Kearney, the recently fired HC coach

Comment by wbb 04.11.10 @ 1:34 pm

Kearney is the name that jumped out to me, too. Dixon is friends with him, he’s a well respected veteran, and he is from Philadelphia. Sounds like a match.

Comment by Mark 04.11.10 @ 1:59 pm

What about Pat Sandle?

Comment by steve 04.11.10 @ 3:26 pm

That job seems to be out of Sandle’s league. He is a different kind of coach. More like a scout.

Comment by Mark 04.11.10 @ 3:31 pm

Chris’s response to my question:

“Dixon has to be looking for somebody who could be an associate head coach. That’s not really the level that Sandle is at. He’s never even been out on the road.”

Comment by steve 04.12.10 @ 7:29 am

A portion of the endowment can be used for whatever the school deems appropriate.

Comment by Omar 04.12.10 @ 9:29 am

Omar: Technically you are probably correct, and I’m no expert on Pitt’s endowments, but assuming that a portion of the entire $2 billion could be used for paying assistant coaches is a bit misleading.

Endowment money must be used for the purpose(s) it was intended. IMHO most of that $2 billion is likely intended for educational and research purposes, and athletics-oriented endowments are probably intended for facilities or athletic scholarships.

So when it’s all said and done, a very small portion of a very small portion of that $2 billion probably isn’t nearly enough to offset what a program like Kentucky – who makes about 30% more revenue from its basketball program than Pitt – can afford to pay its assistant coaches.

Finally, if any endowment money were available for operational purposes, Pederson would likely use it to offset losses from other sports rather than add budget money to a sport that’s already very profitable on its own.

Comment by TampaT 04.12.10 @ 11:28 am

Tampa:

I don’t disagree with you. The difference at Kentucky is that they paid that slimeball, Calipari, $4 million a year. At that salary, they aren’t going to have a ton leftover for the assistants. And Pitt isn’t broke. They can afford to pay assistants.

As a graduate of the University, I would be appalled if they were using anything but a fraction of the endowment money for athletics. However, that doesn’t mean that it cannot be used for that purpose. Pitt needs to get some endowed scholarships for football and basketball. Personally, I would rather my additional donations go to the academic programs rather than the athletic program. I don’t know how many others feel the same way that I do.

Comment by Omar 04.12.10 @ 11:47 am

Kearney looked like a good choice to me at first too, but then I did a little digging. The main reason given for his firing at Holy Cross in discussions was that he tried to install a run-and-gun system on a team that was recruited to play a ball possession game. That’s more the style of Brey during Kearney’s years at ND. So, I’m thinking now that he might not be a good fit at Pitt.

The main reason I mentioned Antigua in an earlier post is that I hate seeing him connected to Calipari. He has always been referred to as a high-integrity guy and I don’t want to see a former Pitt player/coach tarnished by something he does working for a “snake oil salesman.” His recruiting ability while at Pitt came into question, but he was credited as the lead recruiter on Blair and McGhee while at Pitt, and he’s been Calipari’s main road warrior at Memphis and UK. Hard then for me to believe that’s not just some sour grapes over Antigua leaving his alma mater for what he thought was a better career opportunity.

While I’d also like to see some fresh blood and experience equal to Herrion’s, I think it’s more important that the next associate head coach is a good fit for Jamie’s system and someone who’ll stay for a few years to help further improve the program.

Comment by TampaT 04.12.10 @ 12:07 pm

From what I heard, Antigua did little at Pitt so I don’t think they would ask him back.

Comment by Mark 04.12.10 @ 12:44 pm

Can’t disagree with you there, Omar. Pitt isn’t broke by any means, and the basketball program is profitable. They can afford to pay more to basketball assistants, but given the financial states of other sports programs, it could mean cuts elsewhere. That’s the balance Pederson has to weigh. No easy task.

I also agree on the academics versus athletics. Very proud of our sports teams but even more proud of Pitt being recognized as one of the nation’s top academic and research institutions.

Nordenberg has done an awesome job of developing both IMHO.

Hail to PITT!

Comment by TampaT 04.12.10 @ 12:54 pm

Mark: Again, I’m not pushing for Antigua as the guy. There are probably better fits out there – fresh blood, broader experience, etc.

However, I also wanted to point out that what you “heard” might be sour grapes rather than reality. They seem to love the guy in Memphis and Kentucky, and Calipari recommended him for the head coach opening at Auburn.
