Now this is just plain funny.

DePaul is targeting Pittsburgh’s Jamie Dixon as its first choice for men’s basketball head coach, sources tell NBC 5.

Kansas State’s Frank Martin is the University’s second choice, according to the same source.

H/T to @PeteGaines.

There isn’t even anything worth adding to this bit of silliness.

Maybe 15-20 millions / year and a 21st year option will lure him away!! LOL!!

I’d like Jessica Alba here naked covered in whipped cream, but that ain’t gonna happen. (All out of whipped cream)

I can’t believe this is being reported as a serious story. So Jamie Dixon has no interest in Arizona, but is all about DePaul because his sister was an assistant there? Give me a break.

Comment by Bryan 03.16.10 @ 8:52 pm

Well… for whatever it’s worth, here in Tucson someone within the U of Arizona athletic department told me a couple of days ago that Oregon is going to push for Dixon very hard and that Sean Miller would leave Arizona to go to Pitt if Jamie would leave for Oregon. Gotta love all the rumors…

Comment by Yuni 03.16.10 @ 8:59 pm

Pipe Dream…………..buy maybe, they are anticipating (or believing) that Pitt is going to the Big 10 and with Jamie going public with his strong preference towards the Big East, perhaps they see an opportunity. He’d have Chicago as his recruiting ground and would be top fiddle in the athletic department. At worst, DePaul can guarantee staying in the Big East and increasing his salary.

None of this of course is going to happen of course, however their may be a line of logic and strategy behind their thinking. The fact that they are targeting him says something. As a sidebar, his sister coached there for a couple of years and he may have had some casual contact with the suits there.

Damnit, Bryan, that’s MY fantasy! I thought of it…about the same time every other straight guy did.

Just send some ‘before’ photos before…you know…

Off topic, but anyone catch Herb Pope’s double ball-tap tonight? What an idiot.

Comment by Will H. 03.16.10 @ 11:18 pm

double ball tap? care to elaborate?

Comment by johnnyrocket 03.16.10 @ 11:51 pm

Sheesh! This is being reported as a serious story? No matter what the salary, Dixon would have to be crazy to even return the phone call. Rebuilding takes money … IN THE PROGRAM. And as Pitt Blather pointed out yesterday, DePaul devotes a fraction of the money (relatively modest amount, by Big East standards) to basketball than Pitt does.

Can’t build a national program these days without at least $5 million dedicated to basketball (and not all on the head coach’s salary. It takes, among many things, a sparkling modern facility, which Pitt provides. As well as a large, passionate and deep-pocketed fan base, which the small Catholic school like DePaul doesn’t provide.

DePaul’s glory days died when Ray Meyer retired in 1984. Mark Agguire, Terry Cummings, Rod Strickland and Dallas Comegys ain’t walkin’ into that decrepit arena.

Comment by Jim Lakely 03.17.10 @ 1:50 am

You have got to give Jamie a lot of credit. He was smart enough to avoid taking on the Herb Pope project – i.e. Herb single-handedly lost the NIT opener for Seton Hall last night by decking a Red Raider below the belt – and he somehow produced the 24-8 miracle which is this season. Unlike major programs in down years – North Carolina, UConn, and UCLA come to mind – Coach Dixon managed to keep us ranked, competitive, and in line for a good run in the NCAA. The unpredictable nature of this squad would be frustrating if their overall body of work was not so damn good. We can go 1-1 or 3-1 in the NCAA. You never know.

Comment by TonyinHouston 03.17.10 @ 6:48 am

IMHO Jamie’s “interest” in Oregon, DePaul or anywhere else for that matter, is probably like his interest in openings in the past. He’s fact-finding to make sure Pitt stays on par with his worth to other programs. That might not just be his own salary but the salaries of his assistants. He also may have another coach – Mike Rice @ RMU for example – in mind for the job and he wants to know the expectations before recommending that coach.

Everything I’ve read says he loves Pitt and Pittsburgh as does his family. He has a team he likes that he’s raised from pups to a legitimate contender, and it’s only going to get better over the next few years.

So, what would his motivation be for leaving? Fear of a move to the Big 1x? C’mon. If that even happens, it’s 1-2 years away. He could potentially win a National Championship at Pitt in that time and then go pretty much anywhere he wants if he’s really that set against the Big 1x. He’s smart enough to know that, and also smart enough to wait and see how that whole thing shakes out.

Here’s a link to Jamie’s interview on Mike & Mike for those who missed it:

Wow!

Talk about being out of touch, but it’s Chicagoland!

Comment by WLAT Radio and the Big Beat 03.17.10 @ 8:46 am

I am now reporting that DePaul will be looking at Phil Jackson as a candidate for the head coaching vacancy. Phil has extensive ties to Chicago, having worked there in the 1990s, and the belief is that he’s looking to find more coachable players. If Phil were to leave, expect Simon Cowell to be on the top of the list to replace him, as he is believed to have a good relationship with Lamar Odom’s wife, Kandice Kardashian.

Also, I can confirm that DePaul may seek an interview with Barack Obama about the opening for men’s basketball coach. Obama worked for a Chicago-area law firm early in his career, and was spotted as recently as last fall lobbying on behalf of the Chicago-area sports scene in an Olympic bid selection process. Should Obama take the job, it is widely expected that the United States would look for a career Washington-politician to replace him, with administrators admitting: “We want the next guy to be a Washington man.”

Finally, I can neither confirm nor deny that Jamie Dixon may be interested in the Pleasanton High School (CA) Junior Varsity coaching position. While the job is not known to be open, Dixon is well-known to have been a former child actor, and speculation has abounded that if only he could get a job closer to Pixar studios, he could pursue his one true passion. Expect Pitt Blather’s maz to be at the top of the list of potential replacements, since it is believed that he spent three days in Pittsburgh this winter visiting family.

Comment by maz. 03.17.10 @ 11:41 am

Oregon…DePaul…keeps going down hill. Maybe The Art Institute of Pittsburgh is next on the list. I think we’ve spent too much time even mentioning these schools. Moving on…

Comment by Eric R 03.17.10 @ 11:49 am

Pope punched somebody in the balls in the opening round of the NIT…

Also is the game on TV at all ? Since cbs covers like 8 games at once.. and cuts away to various games.

Any place to catch it in its entirety ? Can it be viewed in its entirety on cbssports.com ?

Comment by Snala the Panther 03.17.10 @ 12:15 pm

Snala: I believe you’ll be able to watch just Pitt/Oakland on either ncaa.com or cbssport.com – same broadcast with different entry points. That’s the way it was last year and looks to be the same this year.

Comment by TampaT 03.17.10 @ 12:23 pm

Sorry. Typo. It’s cbssports.com of course.

Comment by TampaT 03.17.10 @ 12:24 pm

Hey,

You know Jamie going to Chicagoland, don’t discount it because it seems it’s a done deal if Jamie takes a ride on Air Force One!!!

LOL!

Dixon will retire at Pitt!

Comment by WLAT Radio and the Big Beat 03.17.10 @ 12:31 pm

Everyone talks about how it’s unfair that coaches can just jump around and take different jobs, but players are punished if they transfer.

How come nobody brings up the fact that coaches in pro sports can’t go anywhere until their contract expires, but college coaches can. Why is that/

Comment by Jimbo Covert's my Dad 03.17.10 @ 12:40 pm

Gonzo gone at Seton Hall…This just in: Dixon linked to Seton Hall HC position…

Comment by HbgFrank 03.17.10 @ 12:41 pm

Jimbo,

Since when are coaches in pro sports not able to leave?

Nick Saban left the Miami Dolphins with time on his contract.

Bobby Petrino left the Atlanta Falcons with time on his contract, in the middle of the season!

You don’t see it much in terms of lateral moves, because there are precious few NFL head coaching jobs, and if you have one, you really don’t have the time to go look for a different one in the same league. Also, teams that have coaches good enough to be wanted by other teams are usually teams where the coach is happy where he is.

Now there is the case of teams declining to grant permission for their coaches to be interviewed, but this is not always obeyed anyway. (But since the coach can be terminated for doing it, usually the coach obeys if his employer declines permission.)

Comment by maz. 03.17.10 @ 1:19 pm

Follow-up: the most recent LATERAL NFL coach to leave a job where he was under contract to take another NFL head coaching job that I can think of is Mike Holmgren. He was still under contract after the 1998 season with Green Bay, and left to accept an 8-year contract to coach the Seattle Seahawks.

Comment by maz. 03.17.10 @ 1:21 pm

The Star Ledger is reporting Bobby Gonzalez is out at Seton Hall. Getting this jerk out of the Big East will help the reputation of the league. What a loser!

Comment by TonyinHouston 03.17.10 @ 1:21 pm

Any chance of Mike Rice now making a move to Seton Hall ?

Comment by Hollywood 03.17.10 @ 1:34 pm

DePaul Hockey is considering Mario Lemieux or Wayne Gretzky to coach their team next season.

Comment by Coach Ditka 03.17.10 @ 1:45 pm

Holmgren wasn’t really making a lateral move because he was given the GM position in Seattle, as well as more money. Clearly a promotion in his eyes since he the Green Bay GM had ultimate control of personnel moves and Holmgren didn’t like that..

Comment by maguro 03.17.10 @ 2:08 pm

It’s such a silly annual ritual. Everyone assumes that coaches are looking for a bigger profile gig with more money without recognizing that most coaches are looking to either retain their existing position in a demanding job field or enhance their existing position with better pay and the ability to attract better players.

I can’t fathom why anyone would consider Oregon or Depaul (or Arizona or USC for that matter) better situations than Pitt. Dixon doesn’t lobby for other jobs nor actively dispel rumors because it enhances his negotiating power with Pitt to get the most money he can out of an already good situation. There’s nothing wrong with reinforcing with your employer that you’re good at your job and in demand and you should be compensated accordingly. Dixon’s just letting the market speak and it would be counterintuitive to sign in blood for life with Pitt. To Pitt’s credit they’ve always taken care of Dixon and he seems to get that too.

Herb pope, two cheap shots, within 15 seconds. Sounds like an IUP candidate.

Comment by alcofan 03.17.10 @ 3:21 pm

Gonzalez was fired this afternoon for cause. The acting Athletic Director canned him. Good riddence. I don’t normally say this …but what an asshole!

Comment by Dan 72 03.17.10 @ 4:32 pm

From the AP story on Gonzalez:
“Performance and success are not measured solely by wins and losses, but also in the conduct of those associated with the program,” said Patrick Hobbs, the university law school dean who has been overseeing the athletic department since July.

“We have expectations as to how our coaches and players will conduct themselves, and they are expected to treat everyone they interact with, whether officials, the press or our students, with the utmost respect, maturity and professionalism. Those core expectations must be met.”

It is reassuring that character matters to some university administrators.

Comment by BigGuy 03.17.10 @ 5:14 pm

Platitudes, shmatitudes. Core values, blah, blah. It’s all about winning. If the guy won he’d still be there.

Comment by steve 03.17.10 @ 6:38 pm

Dan/Steve, agree 100%

Comment by HbgFrank 03.17.10 @ 10:42 pm

The Seton Hall – Pittsburgh Connection; Herb Pope gets thrown out of the NIT game because he punches an opposing player in his groin. Duquesne transfer (out of Brooklyn) Robert Mitchell get s thrown off the team and a few days later gets arrested for kidnapping and armed robbery.

Bobby Gonzalez’s winning record improves every year. Right before the season starts this year, Seton Hall extends his contract to 2015. Gonzalez improves on the record that got him the contract extension and makes it to the NIT. HbgFrank , Dan 72, and Seton Hall all say that Gonzalez is an asshole. Seton Hall says that they are firing Gonzalez because he is an asshole, but steve and HbgFrank say that that is not the real reason. They didn’t fire him because he is an asshole and that he recruited players with little or no character, They fired him because he didn’t win. Makes sense to me.

Comment by BigGuy 03.18.10 @ 9:44 am

Have to agree with BigGuy. Wins/losses may have had a little to do with Gonzo’s firing, but this was a lot more about what his conduct and the conduct of his players did to the image of the university.

Sonny Vacarro owes Pitt at least three blue-chippers for even suggesting they hire Gonzalez and six more for getting his panties in a wad when they didn’t.

Comment by TampaT 03.18.10 @ 11:36 am

To each his own…If Seton Hall was a 2 Seed in the NCAA tournament right now, Pope and Mitchel would still be problem children, Gonza would still be…well Gonzo, and Gonzo would still be the HC at Seton Hall…in my humble opinion.

Comment by HbgFrank 03.18.10 @ 12:07 pm

Sure, HbgFrank. That scenario would have made it tougher for SH to dismiss Gonzo. But I’m thinking the AD and/or the Pres. would have put him on notice that he needs to clean up the program’s image – fast.

As we all know, it usually comes down to money. Wins bring booster and corporate sponsor dollars. Wins plus a good image bring even more financial support (i.e. Pitt and the Petersons). Improvement plus a good image helps maintain corporate sponsors, and therefore the coach’s job. Minimal improvement plus a poor image – as in Gonzo’s case – chases the money away faster than losing, so it’s bye-bye time.

Comment by TampaT 03.18.10 @ 12:45 pm

Hey, universities don’t fire coaches who have winning records. To prove my point, take a look at Bobby Knight when he coached Indiana…well, maybe that is not the best example. Then there is Bob Huggins at Cincinnati…ah, scratch that example also. Give me a few more minutes.
