Now We Wait

Filed under: Basketball — Chas @ 2:41 pm

Okay. Everyone calmed down a bit more?

Yesterday turned out to be a pretty good day for Pitt. Michigan St., Wisconsin, Maryland, New Mexico, BYU, Texas A&M and Baylor all went down. That’s a significant number of teams trying to claim a 2, 3 or 4 seed going down either in their first games of their conference tournament or needed at least two wins to stake a claim.

The odds remain that Pitt will still be a 3 or 4 seed.

Once more, the bigger issue that will decide whether Pitt is a 3 or 4 has to do with geography, how to place the other 7 Big East teams, and not putting a team against a team they have already faced this year in the first round or two (which is why projections putting Pitt against Wofford are a bit silly).

Not much left to say about the ND game. It was frustrating, but not one of the most frustrating (the second half of the 2004-05 season kind fills out most of the list). It just sucks when a game is that slow paced, and remains that close throughout, but Pitt could never get there. It also sucks when ND drills their open 3s early against Pitt, but then goes cold against WVU.

Credit should go to Notre Dame. They had won 5 in a row coming in — and lost just before that in OT at Louisville. They have been a hot team that had completely reinvented themselves on the fly. It is completely disconcerting to think Mike Brey might not be that bad a coach.

The thing I have seen with Pitt all season, is that they are a good team that has overachieved. The margin of error for Pitt in nearly every game just seems so small. They can survive if one player has an off game *cough* Gilbert Brown *cough* or is controlled by the other side, but if more than one player has a bad night it can be too much for the rest of the team to pick things up.

Oh, heck, I want something that makes me feel better. How about this tremendous story on Bill Raftery? I would love to have a drink or ten with him.

It is indelibly burned into my brain. The one picture which keeps popping up in my memory is that of Bilas, the “Sportscaster” looking straight into the camera with that beatific smile on his face. To say the three who reported the Pitt tournament finale appeared to be biased against the Panthers would be an understatement. Such is life in the Big Apple when playing against “America’s Team” (or is that Duke?) Not to excuse the local hoopsters, mind you. Pitt had many chances to win. The Irish were hot from the floor on Thursday and cold on Friday. So what do the Panthers do now? Do they fold up and opt out of the “Big Dance” or do they validate an exceptional and unexpected season by going a couple of games into the “March Madness” hysteria? Hope for the best fans and remember its all in the match-ups. George from Columbus

Oh, please. Bilas might have some bias to ND because Brey was a Duke assistant, but he was hardly outrageous. Raftery has been one of the more pro-Pitt announcers out there — and one of the most fun. To feel they were biased against Pitt is pure projection and bull.

Bilas has always been more than fair to Pitt IMO.

I think everyone likes to think that the announcers hate their favorite team.

Appreciate your candor,Charles. That’s what makes blogging fun. Actually, I felt kind of sorry for Raftery because he struggled to get a word in edgewise with his microphone compatriots. Guess I am a wee bit paranoid about how the big boys treat us small market fans. I do feel gratified that we have escaped the familiar jargon of Joltin Joe Vitale. Peace brothers, its nothing personal. George

Pitt’s RPI ranking now stands at 16, which would indicate a 4 or 5 seed. Of course, RPI, while historically important in seeding, is not the only criteria. Teams currently ahead of Pitt in RPI that might be seeded lower include Purdue (which is getting pounded by Minnesota right now), New Mexico, Temple, Butler, and Texas A&M. So a 3 seed is still possible, but a 4 looks more likely.

I have a sinking feeling we’re looking at a 4 seed in Spokane.

It would be nice to get a 3 seed but if we don’t then I don’t think it dooms up. The bottomline is Pitt needs to bring it’s game against whomever the committee has us face…I think we will soon learn that this years tournament is relatively wide open for any good team to take…after all, there aren’t many great teams in the field of 65 this yr.

Here’s someone else’s view other than Lunardi’s.

Chas – I would love to have a drink (or ten) with you and many of the maniacs who blog on this site and care so much about Pitt. If Rafferty could join us, it would be great! Wannstedt and Dixon even better. George could give the blessing.

A week 4 seed seems very likely, looks like a trip out west is in order!!

Dan 72: If Lunardi’s latest bracket (11/14 @ 1 a.m.) is right, I’ll meet you at City Hall Pub, the closest bar to Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena, after Friday’s game. 🙂

Meant Lunardi bracket 3/14 @ 1 a.m. I’m not already into next season yet.

Is one of the sites Buffalo? If so, what are the chances of us getting sent there for the first round?

Comment by Z-boy 03.14.10 @ 9:04 am

Spokane brings up some bad fellings…

I have horrible visions of the Chevy team going to Boise? and getting rolled. I was told that the team (supposedly) were chasing Mormon skirts all week…

Somehow though, I think this team might actually benefit from a far trip away from Pittsburgh and the East Coast. Youthfull, coachable, and flying under the radar.

Comment by Pauly P 03.14.10 @ 9:08 am

Syracuse and WVU will be in Buffalo. No way we end up there, IMHO Zboy

Hmmmm. Ohio State wins by almost 30 points and four of their starters play 39 minutes each. I’m sure there is a good reason, but it escapes me right now.

“Hey, Joe, I understand that your 7th man at OSU. Good for you. You worked hard. How many minutes did you play in the blow-out? Just one???”
