You know, we can pretend that the biggest concern is replacing two starting cornerbacks, the depth at safety, the change at MLB, who the hell is going to be the center.

No. We all know the big question as far as position question is the QB spot. Specifically Tino Sunseri or Pat Bostick. Let’s get it done now. So the fact that ESPN.com’s Big East writer Brian Bennett teased his interview with Coach Dave Wannstedt to end last week has been awaited.

Wannstedt said it will be a competition this spring between Pat Bostick and Tino Sunseri. Bostick redshirted a year ago, and Wannstedt said he really learned a lot and showed great improvement in practice. Wannstedt also had high praise for Sunseri, the redshirt sophomore who was Bill Stull’s backup a year ago.

“He’s ready to play now,” Wannstedt said. “It’s his time. He understands the offense, and we’ve got a good feel for his abilities and what he can do.”

This spring, Wannstedt said, Bostick and Sunseri will split the reps evenly early on in practice, with Andrew Janocko serving as the third-stringer.

Barring multiple, horrific injuries there will be no way incoming freshmen QBs Anthony Gonzalez or Mark Myers are even going to sniff the field this fall. So, by all means, pine for their tantalizing untapped potential. Drool over grainy and choppy YouTube snippets of their performances in high school. Dream of what they might one day do in the Blue and Gold. Just please, do me this small favor. Don’t even suggest that either will have a shot at starting come August. We all know it won’t happen.

So let’s go directly to the questions and quoted answers on the matter:

Let’s talk about the quarterback situation, which is always a big deal. Where does that stand going into the spring?

DW: We’re better off than we’ve been in the past for a couple reasons. From a depth standpoint, we have Pat Bostick coming back, and I think the redshirt year has done wonders for him knowledge-wise, from a physical and mental standpoint. And the interesting thing with Tino Sunseri is, if you go back to last spring we opened up the competition between Billy Stull, Pat Bostick and Tino. So all three quarterbacks got equal reps throughout the spring. Then we got to training camp and made the decision to redshirt Pat. And Tino was alternating between first group/second group all through camp with Billy.

So, really we came out of camp where Billy was a little bit ahead of him, but Tino had gotten so much work with the first group on offense, as I look back on it, it was one of the better things we did to help his development. So he’s ready to play now. He’s a redshirt sophomore. He understands the offense and we’ve got a good feel for his abilities and what he can do. So we’ll see what he can do. It’s going to be a competition.

Then we have two really good freshmen coming in, and obviously you’re not counting on them. But we like Anthony Gonzalez from Liberty (Penn.) and Mark Myers from (Cleveland) St. Ignatius. Here’s kind of an interesting tidbit: They were both picked to play in the Big 33 game; one will be playing for Ohio and one for Pennsylvania. So at some point in the game, both quarterbacks in the Big 33 game could both be going to Pitt. That’s probably never happened before.

Will you keep Gonzalez at quarterback? He’s a versatile all-around athlete.

DW: We’ll see. That’s the plan right now and we’ll just have to see how it unfolds.

So going into spring, is Sunseri No. 1 on the depth chart, or is it officially even between him and Bostick?

DW: We have a walk-on kid, Andrew Janocko, who’s been here three years. All three of them will get work. We’ll split the work early with Tino and Bostick, but I think they’ll both have to go and show what they can do, and we’ll give them each a chance to go out and prove themselves.

Do you anticipate the competition going into fall camp like last year?

DW: I don’t think so. I think it will be cleared up pretty good this spring. But you never know. I’m anticipating that it will.

How do you want to read it? Bennett seems to think that Sunseri goes in designated as the guy at least technically the #1 or 1A on the depth chart. If for no other reason being Sunseri was the #2 last year behind Stull.

I have no clue. Nothing in the answer seems to make it clear to me who is favored. Clearly Wannstedt thinks Sunseri has the opportunity. Does that mean it is his to lose? Does it just mean that he will gets to go out with the first team on the first day of practice?

There is the reality that Bostick had a redshirt available while Sunseri didn’t so there was a logic in that for last year.

We just haven’t seen Bostick in almost a year throw the ball in even a scrimmage situation. Wannstedt was careful to praise both.

Coach Wannstedt wants this settled by the end of spring practices. I’m guessing that fans won’t see it settled until late-August — at the earliest

I really think Bostick is going to transfer…he will go the Flacco route and escape to the FCS(D-1AA maybe even Delaware since his is from the Eastern part of the state…the writings on the wall. He started his freshman year and has regressed. Wanny has no faith in him clearly. Sunseri will be the starter this year.

I believe it will be resolved by Spring out of respect to Bostick. I am sure I am not the only one who thinks its either starter or transfer for Pat.

I really hope it isn’t 1 or 1A for Sunseri going into camp. Bostick showed some guts his freshmen year coming in and winning big games. That intangible is so important. Palko didn’t have players around him, but he had guts. Stull always seemed to come up small in some big games.

Guys – Pat Bostick is not going to transfer. He loves being at PITT and loves competing for the starter’s role. The bottom line with this competition is that either Pat wins the starter’s job, or failing that, is at worst one snap away from being the starter in case of an injury. Either way, while he wants to be the starting QB, that desire won’t come at the cost of transferring.

And Jeremy – you’re head seems to be firmly up your butt. Pat Bostick is leaps and bounds a better QB now than he was in 2007. Just your twisting your inferences by saying ‘he started in 2007’ is smoke – Bostick was forced into the starting role by multiple injuries so the situation is nothing like you present.

I wish I had the insight of Jeremey. How does he know that Bostick has regressed? We have only seen him once in two years when he won at ND. I don’t think he redshirts if he does not have a shot this year. He almost beat out Stull two years ago and has been working with Cignetti for a year. Sunseri looked pretty raw to me in the little we saw of him last year. I don’t think anything has been decided. Let the best man win the job. Whoever loses the job, there is no need to transfer, injuries happen.

I sure hope the last two comments are more accurate than the first two. I’d hate to have a walk-on or a freshman one step away from being our starting QB. Look at what that got us in 2008 aside from the WVU upset.

It should be a good battle between Bostick and Sunseri. And based on Wanny’s MO, it will be decided on the field rather than in the court of public opinion. Both have had a full year under Cignetti, so I expect both to show vast improvement over their freshman performances. Let the best man win.

Then the fans need to get behind that guy without any of the crap we had last year. There are enough issues on this team that could derail what should be a conference championship season. We don’t need idiots in the stands, in the media or on the Internet making a head case out of our starting QB on top of it.

Sorry, meant 2007 in reference to freshman QB and WVU upset.

Comment by TampaT 03.02.10 @ 8:09 am

I never really thought much of Bostick but I have to say the kid has improved drastically from his freshman year and you have to admit he is a winner!

The QB spot should be well contested, it appears to be Sunseri’s to lose, but I agree, it will be settled on the field.

Good luck to both!

Comment by Brian Wannstedt 03.02.10 @ 8:37 am

I’ll be surprised if the competition btw the two is cleared up early.

Comment by alcofan 03.02.10 @ 8:46 am

Bostick is a superior QB to Sunseri and will be the starter and have a terrific year. He has a height and maturity advantage and has cured his throwing motion.

Comment by Dan 72 03.02.10 @ 8:51 am

Bostick is not going to transfer. What would be his motive? He has no NFL potential and even if Tino gets the job I would guess Pat would still see a decent amount of playing time. I’ve also heard that he does like being at Pitt. From what I’ve seen and heard he has taken great interest in maybe getting into coaching some day and has learned a great deal this past year by simply sitting on the sidelines. I just dont see him transferring now. This is nothing like the Flacco situation.

Comment by Coach Ditka 03.02.10 @ 8:56 am

I heard an interview on local radio back in January when Wanny seemed to infer that Tino had the inside track, altough he didn’t proclaim him the starter. He just spoke glowingly about how well Tino did in practice.

As for Bostick, P-G beat writer, P Zeise, has written on a few occasions about his love for Pitt, and the fact that he is great student of the game and will likely become a coach and probably a pretty good one.

While we haven’t seen Bostick in game action since 12/31/08, I think many of us were pleasantly surprised how different he looked in last spring’s scrimmage where his delivery looked markedly improved after only a month of Cig’s tutelage.

While I certainly don’t have any insider knowledge, I woud expect a competiitve QB battle and would be surprised if Bostick would decide to transfer if he lost the job.

Comment by wbb 03.02.10 @ 9:13 am

This is nothing like the Flacco situation? Find 1 person in this entire world other than Joe’s parents who thought that this is how things would end up. Nobody was upset when Flacco transferred and nobody even realized what he was doing until Mel Kiper said his name. The only difference between this and the Flacco situation is that Flacco had NO chance of seeing the field, where as Bostick has already seen it and is in an OPEN competition for this upcoming season.

You can’t say that Bostick has “NO NFL POTENTIAL.” The kid has played a handful of games as a true freshman and a couple random snaps that burnt his redshirt. Nobody knows what potential Bostick has other than the 5 stars next to his name as a high school senior.

We beat the No1 team on their home court, how good are we?

Ever wonder why this site has to put up with fruit cakes like jeremey whack job.

Guys, guys, guys…….. We’re forgetting about Wanny’s Law – that seniority rules on his depth chart. If we simply apply the Law of Wanny, it shows that Bostick is #1 on the depth chart currently and the job is his to lose. End of discussion.

Comment by johnnyrocket 03.02.10 @ 11:48 am

if seniority always rules, why was Baldwin starting ahead of Mcgee and Turner? Why was Lewis starting ahead of Collier and S Harris? When Gunn was injured, why was Mason inserted at MLB instead of Dell? In Wanny’s very 1st game as Pitt HC, why did natural freshmen CJ Davis and Gus Mutakas start against ND?

There is a big learning curve from high school to major college especially at certain positions … QB,LB and DB, not to mention physical maturity required for linemen … and I believe you’ll find many college coaches that will rely on experience over raw talent unless there is a decided advantage.

Comment by wbb 03.02.10 @ 12:10 pm

Coach Ditka…no one knew Flacco was going to be a 1st round draft choice when he left Pitt. I’m not sure the Flacco situation was any different than other QB’s transferrring schools.

wbb…the players you mention (Collier, Harris & Dell) sucked and that’s why freshman played ahead of them. Davis and Mustakas started a true freshman because they OL & DL were horrible when Wanny took over.

Comment by Fred 03.02.10 @ 4:18 pm

Fred, All I am saying is that Flacco knew for sure he wasnt seeing the field if he stayed at Pitt. He had Palko and Getsy ahead of him. Not to mention a new coach, remember Walt recruited Flacco. With Bostick, he has got and will get more playing time. Nobody knew Flacco was a first round pick but I do know that Pat Bostick is not NFL material.

Comment by Coach Ditka 03.03.10 @ 8:33 am

My money is on Bostick…You don’t redshirt a player in his Junior year of college just to string him along in the program for an extra year. Pat Bostick went from being a deer in the headlights at the start of his FR year to being a guy who displayed a real sense of confidence on the field by the end of his Sophmore year (still raw, but confident). I don’t know what Sunseri can do. He may very well be better than Bostick. I think this is a wide open competition. The player that grades out the highest in camp will start…that, in fact, is Wanny’s law. I happen to think that player will be Bostick.
