LiveBlog: Pitt-St. John’s

I’m leaning towards a coffee stout for this game. Noon on Saturday. I really hope that Pitt isn’t feeling as lethargic as I am. It’s snowing again in the Cleveland area and I never shoveled out from the stuff that fell in the evening and night. I need Pitt to win so I can at least feel some motivation to shovel afterwards.

Quickly, Pitt’s struggling with rebounding and wants to finish strong down the stretch. The players knew they played poorly on Wednesday and paid for it on Thursday and Friday with “boot camp.”

Today is the 25th anniversary of the “sweater game” between G-town and St. John’s. There might be a little mention of this during the game.

LiveBlog around noon. ESPN360, ESPN FullCourt, MASN, MSG or FoxSports Pittsburgh have the game. Frustratingly, no HD.

If you need to break it out, Click Here. Otherwise, just look down.

you can watch here if you dont have the game on tv and dont want the espn360 mega delay so you can keep up with the chat: link to justin.tv

Start fast and make plays early. Let’s get that ND game taste out of our mouths.

A Win…not pretty…ST. John’s posted our guards up a bit too much, and we let them rebound too much on their offensive glass…but we had good ball rotation, well-balanced scoring, and 14 assists…a Win we needed…and really, a team Win.

Hail to PITT!

Nice win!

Two more left, this is a gritty team that has moxie!!!

Nice win – a double-bye in the Big East Tourney is almost locked up. With G’town losing to Notre Dame, and Marquette and Louisville playing difficult games tomorrow, Pitt might clinch no worse than 4th before even playing the next game…

Pitt is got tiebreakers over the top 3 teams so unless they crap out on the final two games they should get a double bye.

Good win – midway through this season I said that they HAD to get more from Travon and Dante if they were going to keep their early season success up and both seem to have found their groove a bit here, especially Travon. Very nice to see. I can’t see us losing either of the next two, which is nice because as far as I know, all of their BET games will be at night,

Official box score says Taylor played 10 minutes, and McGee played 33. That can’t be right unless they were both on the floor at the same time. Did that happen?

An observation….does anyone else think Gibbs needs to rest a bit. It looks like his legs are shot and he is not getting the same extension on his jumper. Cannot see anything else wrong.I would use Woodall a lot in the last two games. We need Gibbs to be back to his shooting self in both tourneys.

Comment by Dan 72 02.27.10 @ 7:29 pm

Shooters need to shoot and get in a rhythm. They’ve already taken a lot of load off of Gibbs by playing Woodall more at the point. Also, Wannamaker is often running the offense now from the top, allowing Gibbs out on the wing. Ashton is at that in-between height, size, and athletic ability that he has a hard time creating his own shots. I think he’s playing fine within our offense and lurks like a cobra ready to strike. When he was the bulk of our offense earlier in the season, everyone was complaining about how dependent we were on him.

So the live blog doesn’t run so live on my phone…MSG was less than half full. And there were a plenty of Pitt fans as well- including Sam Young, who sat behind the bench. Grizzlies are playing Knicks tonight…Lot of really obvious poor size matchups for Pitt and we handled it just fine. Someone on here mentioned that Woodall is not a good defender, but that’s not true. I’ve seen him play significant minutes in two games in person and he’s doing a great job. He’s an excellent help defender as well. He just gets caught on the switch sometimes. I don’t know, not much else to take away from this game. Dante does look a lot more active and seems to be reading situations better on both ends. He’s not as lost as he looked earlier in the year. And did I see him make a nifty left finger roll in the first half.?.?. He also posted up and called for the ball a lot on offense today. And it did seem like he was open at the baseline a bunch of times where his teammates opted not to pass to him. He’s still a year or two away from getting those feeds with confidence I suppose.

a few things:

– I really don’t believe that McGhee and Taylor was on the court at the same time (I would like to attribute it to rounding off error … but doubt if that is true.)

– I’ve noticed that Gibbs misses every time he jumps before shooting .. but when he gets that quick release wiith min. jumping, he shoots much better .. as was the case of his key 3 pointer from the corner in the 2nd half to help thwart a SJU run

– I wonder if SJU suffers from like Pitt FB does when it comes to local civic support … a smaller fish in a bigger pond.

I just watched a few minutes of the ’85 St.John’s/ Georgetown game on MSG network the other day and MSG was electric with excitement that day and all those times I’m sure. New York is experiencing a collective nadir in it’s enthusiasm for basketball. The Knicks suck and so does St.John’s. And a lot of the high school talent simply wants to get out of the city and experience life somewhere else. St. John’s is in Jamaica, Queens, not Manhattan. Maybe when the Nets move to Brooklyn or the if the Knicks sign Lebron will things change. Either that, or St.John’s hires a big time coach or former player willing to come back (Mark Jackson? Chris Mullin?). Fact is though that a lot people I meet from New York are Syracuse fans.

So, uh, did we see Dorin Dickerson’s 40?

Comment by 85 02.28.10 @ 1:39 am

yeah that was impressive. they were raving about him all afternoon on the nfl network after his workouts. lots of positive talk about wanny and the talent level/program at pitt.

Nice to have Gibbs at the end of games to close things out.

Chas: Looks like you’re getting spammed by “someone” who’s trying to sell us old guys “happy pills.” At least they’re enjoying the conversation. 🙂

Comment by TampaT 02.28.10 @ 10:20 am
