…Before I collapse
You know, I just looked up at SportsCenter to find out DeJuan Blair had a 20-20 night in the Rookie-Sophomore NBA game. That’s nice.
Good luck to the rest of college basketball on Saturday in topping tonight. Odds are it won’t be coming from the Big 11. In a hilarious scheduling quirk, there are three games on Saturday. 3 of the 5 teams tied for 1st in the Big 11 against the bottom 3 teams in the conference: Mich St-PSU; Ind-Wisc; Iowa-Purdue. To quote the Big 11 Network’s own commercial, “Never, never, leave the couch!”
Man, it is a good thing Pitt has 6 days before the game against Marquette. Playing at the Bradley Center was going to be tough enough. If this game took place just a few days after tonight, Pitt would still be too drained mentally and physically.
I still can’t get over the night Woodall had. I’ve been so disappointed and hard on him. He was terrified to shoot early, but was so composed in the second half and the OTs. He finished with 12 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists and 0 turnovers. If this gets his confidence back, it would be huge.
Wanamaker had a double-double. 24 points and 10 assists. Gilbert Brown and Ashton Gibbs provided points — especially late. McGhee didn’t score a lot, but was a strong force inside.
A strong finish and never giving up — even if we started to — was inspiring.
Complete stomach punch to WVU and the Hoopies. They had the game. Then they didn’t.
Whee.
As I am sure was already said, Gary played a fantastic game, even if the stats don’t necessarily show it. I can’t believe I am watching the same guy who subbed in for Blair last season.
Also, I continue to be impressed with JJ Richardson. He plays with a strength and toughness that Taylor just hasn’t developed yet. If Richardson can continue to develop and Taylor can capitalize on just half of his amazing potential, Pitt will have the pieces in place for a fantastic frontcourt in the future.
Sorry about the disjointed nature of this post. It has been quite a night!
Hail to PITT!

but I digress. This was a win for the ages. Hard fought and much deserved.
Oh yeah, and tell Gottlieb to go steal some more credit cards.

Has the Zoo ever rushed the court? I love the fact it didn’t happen last night, especially with the recent incidents that aren’t warranted.
Impressed with a few things:
– Interior and perimeter passing were great. Moved the ball to the open man often with few turnovers = Pitt basketball.
– Mental toughness was there when it counted on the floor and on the bench. Hoopies choked. We didn’t. Again, Pitt basketball.
– Woodall showed up big time. I can think of numerous plays but none bigger than the end-to-end drive and floater to pull us within one possession at the end of regulation followed by the quick swing to Gibbs after Wanny’s save. Both caught the Hoopies completely off balance. I know a lot of you follow the players’ Tweets, so you know they all are behind him. Good to see their faith rewarded at a key time in the schedule.
Just an awesome TEAM effort. Everyone who played contributed and hustled, and the coaches did one heck of a job keeping heads in the right place throughout that marathon.
Hail yeah to PITT!
I’m sure this may have been discussed in the live blog or elsewhere, but did anyone noticed how Pitt’s style of play changed with a minute left in regulation? Prior to that, they seemed to be moving in quicksand–they ran plays, but nothing seemed to be going in. Then, at 1:00, they just seemed to play “freer.” They loosened up. They drove to the basket and made their natural shots. Whatever they did, it carried into OT, and worked.
Just my .02.
And I do think that this is a positive since it’s become all too common .. it happened in the Ivy League last night.
But last night was just a great night for Pitt BB
Also, this game reminded me a lot of Louisville. I quit watching both games with about a minute to go and were called back to the tv with 20 seconds left by family members.
This may not be the most talented team, but they have that Pitt grit and heart.
Beat em on the playing field!
Pitt did the one thing to harm and embarass WVU that will sit with them for years to come….
They beat em straight up on the court!
Hail to Pitt!
Couple things that really stood out for me:
1) Woodall’s play — I have been a harsh critic of him on previous posts, he seemed to play with composure last night and really made some key shots.
2) JD’s defensive coaching towards the end– Loved the use of zone to confuse WVU. Loved the “play from behind” coaching that JD used like quick timeouts after a big momentum changing shot; allows the team to regroup and press with fresh legs. Coach K, Mike Brey, Calhoun, and Izzo use this tactic and, I think, it allows for better time management. I attribute the steal on the inbounds to having guys fresh and focused out of a timeout. Normally, Jamie just concedes the inboaunds in those situations.
Great poise all around, awesome win. Hat tip to Travon Woodall and the Zoo.
Great win, and great TEAM effort by Pitt! The most impressive stat is that Pitt is now 6-0 versus top 5 teams at the Pete.
“You have to give Pitt a lot of credit,” West Virginia coach Bob Huggins said. “They didn’t fold. But they wouldn’t have won the game without a lot of help from us.”

I guess ‘ol Hug conveniently forgot who let them into OT in the first place and then into OT #2.
They keep adding depth, Woodall played like a Champion and Richardson gave solid minutes. Maybe Taylor will have a breakthrough game soon, Woodall certainly looked like a different player.
Kudos to McGhee, most improved player in the Big East. Wanamaker was a stud, Gibbs is back.
They lose Dixon, Wanny and Woodall to fouls and still overcome.
They do it with mirrors, Jamie is King of Oakland.
Satisfying!
“You have to give Pitt a lot of credit. They didn’t fold.”
You don’t have to give Pitt a lot of credit??? Pitt folded????
“But they wouldn’t have won the game without a lot of help from us.”
If WVU made one or two of those fouls towards the end of the game, those shots would not have been helpful to WVU’s cause, and Pitt would still have won the game???
If you were Huggins speech writer, what would you advise him to say in order to give a truthful, classy analysis of the game?
Hail to Pitt!
Can understand the hate for WVU and Huggins. He’s a total ass most of the time. Don’t understand why the sideline reporters chase after him for comments. He always has some smartass answer that makes the reporter look like an idiot like his ‘I’m going to tell them we have to score more points than Pitt’ at halftime last night. He’s a perfect fit in Hoopietown – a jerk among jerks.
BTW – ESPN needs more Dorris Burke and less Doug Gottlieb. An hour after the game he was still claiming that Wannamaker stepped out of bounds on the Gibbs’ three at the end of regulation. His own network’s replay clearly showed otherwise. Simply a great play. Burke was really solid as the color announcer. I’ll be glad to see her get continued exposure when this game goes to ESPN Classic.
