LiveBlog: RMU-Pitt

Last week Deadspin had a bit about trademarks and they brought up how Robert Morris likes to go as “Bobby Mo” at times. Yet the university does not own the trademark. Honestly, I never knew they went by that. You would think in the storied rivalry that is Pitt-Robert Morris, I would know these things.

Liveblog in a couple hours. As usual, right below, or you can break it out by Clicking Here.

Impressions from the Robbie MO game.
* Pitt is still getting pushed under the basket and beat on rebounds…must be fixed
* Announcer on Taylor after watching him in high school “he never had to play hard” and might not know how…it show’s.
* Pitt did an excellent job of finding mismatches when RM switched on screens…especially McGhee
* When Pitt can run their offense thru McGhee, they are a different (and much better) offense.
* Agreed, Robbie Mo could not continue 67% shooting from the outside, but if we do not man up, Nova and WVU can.
* Still trying to figure out Nasir’s game? very confusing at times.

Good win…let’s stick it to the Snadkes on Friday

What’s so confusing about him? He’s a gritty hustler, good nose for the ball, decent interior passer, with poor touch and a tad under-athletic enough to make some plays off the dribble or finish sometimes around the basket. As I commented in the live blog last night, it would be great if he could mature into a Jeff Adrien type player- i.e. strong leadership and a decent mid-range jumper to keep defenders more honest. He probably needs another off-season of college level conditioning and shooting practice.

Dante was a man among boys in High School, and now you’re seeing what happens when the level of play is equalized. We have gone over this many times, he has some raw skills, unteachable frame, but serious need to do the following:

1) Develop physically
2) Improve offensive game (to the basket)

#1 will happen; #2 will happen when he gets confidence, experience, and shot mechanics fixed.

In terms of Nasir, the answer to WHY is very simple. He is the ultimate Jamie Dixon player. A role-player, per se. Non-elite talent (read:project and recruitable), Smart, Agressive, Trainable, Unselfish, Interchangeable, and the ultimate teammate. If he has a problem it would be Pitt fans making him out to be more than he is…especially on the offensive side.

IMHO, Had things gone as planned, and our 2010 lineup being..

1 Gibbs
2 Dixon
3 GB
4 DT
5 Blair

You would have seen Nasir used in a 10-12 minute sub role for 3 or 4; Wanny as a 10-15 minute sub role for the 2 & 3.

But, that didn’t happen… obviously.

Regarding Taylor, once again I thought the effort was there last night. His lack of strength showed, particularly in his inability to finish around the basket and losing a few rebounds that he appeared to have cleanly. Nothing really new there.

I agree with Dan that the rebounding, particularly on the defensive side, is a concern. Robert Morris is one of the few teams over which Pitt has a size advantage, so it was a little disconcerting to see RMU get as many offensive boards as they did.

Still, any win is a good win, and it was good to see (i) the shooters light it up for a bit, and (ii) the defense really clamp down at the start of the 2nd half.

Wanny is a great player offensively. Actually, he is Pitt’s best all-around player. I disagree that he would be playing 10-15 minutes off the bench if Blair returned or in an ideal world. He played that much last year on an Elite 8 team. Wanny was groomed to play 25-30 minutes a game this year. Perhaps he would play more 2 than 3, but he would be on the floor at crunch time, with Dixon and Brown at the 4 and Blair at the 5.

Wanny doesn’t get the respect he deserves. He is Pitt’s best rebounder and passer.

Agree 100% on that. I was saying that to a friend the other day actually. Really, if he was just a tad better ballhandler and turned over less (both giving up steals and errant passes), he would be REALLY good.

Wannamaker would play far more minutes than 10-15, and I’m not sure why anyone would want him playing such an insignificant role. He can get to the hoop, shoot it, board, and defend. Probably the best combination of those out of the guards. I agree with Omar in the 25 min range.

Always up for a nice game of “what-if”…I also think Wanamaker would have probably stayed in the starting lineup, with Brown starting at the 4. Blair’s rebounding prowess would have made up for a lot of the other shortcomings of this team, including the lack of size on the frontline.

I hear you guys, but lets not get too crazy on Wanny. He’s a nice kid and is stepping up to have a larger role (he is our 2nd best o threat), but the big fella at the Five, a healthy Dixon from the get-go, a GB available from the get-go, we would be a totally different offensive team.

Our offense would run through the big fella and our guards would be less focused on offensive needs. Don’t get me wrong, Wanny would be used…but he wouldn’t be our 1st, 2nd or even 3rd offensive option. And, I don’t see his defense being good enough to steal starter’s time from Dixon.

he is the best penetrator on the team and passer on the team. that wouldn’t change with blair coming back. gibbs can shoot, but he can’t drive. dixon can drive, but he can’t pass. wanny can drive and pass, and his shot is decent enough to keep teams honest. he would play a lot. he played 20 minutes a game last year.
