Open Thread: Seton Hall-Pitt

Here’s what we know.

— Pitt is saying to stay away if you can’t walk to the Pete.

— The Big East Network (ESPN Regional) canceled the telcast for the safety of their contract hires.

— The Big East is still making this game happen. After all, Seton Hall is already here and the refs have been paid for their appearance.

— If you are a student and not in the Oakland Zoo, you can go to the game free of charge as long as you remember your student ID.

PittPanthers.com is offering a free video feed of the game (allegedly). Check under the “live events” tab to find the game.

— Streaming radio broadcast should be found at 970.

— Pitt really needs this game.

Off topic: I’m watching the Hall of Fame selection show (yeah, I’m bored) on NFL Network.

Two Panthers are in the final 5: Ricky Jackson and Russ Grimm. They could conceivably both get in.

What the hell does Dermontti Dawson need to do to get in damnit!!??? (sorry, for the pro-Steeler rant there)

Comment by Jimbo Covert's my Dad 02.06.10 @ 5:31 pm

Final results are in:

Ricky Jackson (referred to as the guy accidentally as “Randy Jackson” hahaha) and Russ Grimm both got in!

Dick Lebeau also got voted in. I guess putting Dirt Dawson in would’ve been too much ‘burgh for one class to handle!! Maybe he can go in with Bettis another year…. (Once again, sorry for the Steeler rant non-Steeler Pitt fans.)

Comment by Jimbo Covert's my Dad 02.06.10 @ 5:41 pm

Hell, even one of the refs couldn’t make it, and they still are playing (with 2 refs).

Comment by Pantherman13 02.06.10 @ 6:06 pm

the video feed works

Comment by shadyforpresident 02.06.10 @ 6:10 pm

McGhee has to start finihing hi hots or at least get a foul called.

Comment by TMGPanther 02.06.10 @ 6:15 pm

Anyone able to get the live video feed?

Comment by Dock71 02.06.10 @ 6:19 pm

Gibbs needs to stop rushing his shots…there’s no arc on his shot

Comment by MoE 02.06.10 @ 6:22 pm

yes got the live video feed from chas’ link up it is breaking up alot.

Comment by shadyforpresident 02.06.10 @ 6:27 pm

A Dwight Miller sighting????

Comment by Pantherman13 02.06.10 @ 6:30 pm

Kicking a fan out? Wonder why?

Comment by Dave in Orlando 02.06.10 @ 6:32 pm

Miller for defense?

Comment by shadyforpresident 02.06.10 @ 6:32 pm

Whoa. Melvyn Oliver is a large man.

Comment by Dave in Orlando 02.06.10 @ 6:37 pm

Pitt up 29-20 5:41 to go. Frankly, it’s nice not to be playing from behind.

Comment by Dave in Orlando 02.06.10 @ 6:39 pm

McGgee blocks oliver

Comment by shadyforpresident 02.06.10 @ 6:39 pm

McGhee is hit or miss, but isn’t playing poorly. If he can solidify ball security, he’ll be a very solid Big East center.

Comment by Dave in Orlando 02.06.10 @ 6:44 pm

I’m impressed with the free video complete with Bill Hillgrove commentary.

Comment by Jimbo Covert's my Dad 02.06.10 @ 6:45 pm

Hilgrove says McGhee is making the hegde with his “new body and added quickess” that he couldn’t do last year

Comment by shadyforpresident 02.06.10 @ 6:46 pm

The feed for me stopped at 20 to 31

Comment by shadyforpresident 02.06.10 @ 6:50 pm

Gave up a few easy baskets before the break. Disappointing defense. Pitt up 37-30.

Comment by Dave in Orlando 02.06.10 @ 6:52 pm

Just when you think this team has turned the corner …up 13 with 1:35 to go, they turn it over three straight times and let The Hall go on a 6-0 run!! Inexcusable…
Pitt up 7 at the half.

Comment by Dan 72 02.06.10 @ 6:54 pm

Lets hope they hang on for the win though

Comment by shadyforpresident 02.06.10 @ 6:58 pm

yeah bad end to the half…Pitt needs to play through Gil Brown…he can shoot and drive unlike Gibbs who can only shoot…he has been in a slump for the past 10-11 games so they need to find offense in the post anything from the post damn

Comment by Jeremy 02.06.10 @ 7:00 pm

Ricky Jackson and Russ Grimm in Hall of Fame! Now it is time to show some love to Chris Doleman.

Comment by Gas 02.06.10 @ 7:02 pm

Good aggressive rebound for McGhee. Need him to do that consistently. Pope with three fouls with 18 minutes to go. To the bench.

Comment by Dave in Orlando 02.06.10 @ 7:13 pm

Just like that the lead is down to four with 16:30 to go.

Comment by Dave in Orlando 02.06.10 @ 7:14 pm

Not much Nas tonight. Gil’s solid play has relegated him to the bench.

Comment by Dave in Orlando 02.06.10 @ 7:19 pm

The shots are starting to drop and dixon is playing great D on Hazell. HTP

Comment by TMGPanther 02.06.10 @ 7:19 pm

Up by 13? I must have logged into the wrong game.

Comment by CalvinHobbes 02.06.10 @ 7:20 pm

pitt is raining 3s on them

Comment by shadyforpresident 02.06.10 @ 7:20 pm

Chas, maybe you should shut down this blog so that nobody from the Big East gets hurt traveling to read it in this snowstorm. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Of course, again, the fans who actually traveled to the Pete tonight are on their own.

Comment by Lee in Altoona 02.06.10 @ 7:27 pm

Who’s the 3rd guy on the announce team with Hillgrove and Groat?

Comment by Jimbo Covert's my Dad 02.06.10 @ 7:28 pm

Where is JJ? He deserves some PT. Dante still struggling on D.

Comment by MoE 02.06.10 @ 7:28 pm

Gonzales with the technical. I’m not shocked.

Comment by Panthoor 02.06.10 @ 7:31 pm

I’m only watching via Gamecast. What was the tech foul call on SH?

Comment by CalvinHobbes 02.06.10 @ 7:32 pm

yes

Comment by shadyforpresident 02.06.10 @ 7:34 pm

JJ’s in to defend Pope with Gary on the bench. Taylor couldn’t do it. Pope picks up his fourth foul with 8 minutes to go. Stays in the game because he’s Seton Hall’s only offense.

Comment by Dave in Orlando 02.06.10 @ 7:37 pm

Jimbo – it’s Curtis Aiken. This is his first year on the announcing team.

Comment by Pantherman13 02.06.10 @ 7:38 pm

SHU assistant picks up a T. Their staff is obviously not pleased with the calls.

Comment by Dave in Orlando 02.06.10 @ 7:40 pm

This is joyous!!

Comment by Dan 72 02.06.10 @ 7:49 pm

double double for mcghee

Comment by shadyforpresident 02.06.10 @ 7:50 pm

Good showing. Yes, they did need this. A win like this can turn a season around.

Comment by Panthoor 02.06.10 @ 7:50 pm

That’s how you RESPOND, guys!

Hail to PITT!

Comment by TampaT 02.06.10 @ 7:58 pm

ESPN has Taylor listed as a Forward. Did he play the 4?

Comment by apostles03 02.06.10 @ 8:00 pm

Chas, thank you so much for the link. I am computer illiterate and would have never found it.

*If anyone has West Virginia tickets they want to sell, let me know and we can exchange info.

*Great to see my hometown boy Timmy Frye and Nick Rivers get some action

Comment by AJ 02.06.10 @ 8:00 pm

Ahhhhh… nothing like laying a nice royal ass kicking on someone to work out the frustration of the last couple of weeks!

Seriously, I feel a lot better now.

Comment by Jimbo Covert's my Dad 02.06.10 @ 8:01 pm

much needed win and good bounce-back but what a contrast from WVU’s defense. I never thought I would see a worse defensive team in the BE than Notre Dame .. that was until tonight. Pathetic.

But it was still some really good efforts from Brown, wannamaker, MCGhee and Dixon who were for the most part MIA the other night

Comment by wbb 02.06.10 @ 8:04 pm

Great win! On to the next.
Can’t look past Robert Morris on Monday. They’re 10-1 and at the top of the NEC. They’re small (nobody over 6’8″ or 225 lbs.) but they play just about everybody on their roster — a lot. Don’t get trapped heading into Friday’s West Virginia rematch.

Comment by Dave in Orlando 02.06.10 @ 8:06 pm

@apostles03: No. He played five behind McGhee and sat when he struggled containing Pope. Richardson stepped in and played wellโ€ฆ again. Dixon put Taylor back out there at garbage time.

Comment by Dave in Orlando 02.06.10 @ 8:09 pm

good showing panthers, thats how you play pitt basketball

Comment by Tony Cancilla 02.06.10 @ 8:11 pm

Jekyl and Hyde. This was not the team that played so soft and sloppily at the Rock. I think they’re learning that Gibbs cannot be the only answer.

Comment by steve 02.06.10 @ 8:11 pm

Postgame show, Dixon said Dixon hadn’t been practicing until this week and he makes a difference.

Comment by steve 02.06.10 @ 8:18 pm

Thanks for the link to the video feed. It actually worked well.

Comment by maguro 02.06.10 @ 11:38 pm

How long until Brown is starting? He’s proving to be one of our most dynamic offensive threats, when he asserts himself.
PS – This isn’t a shot across Nas’ bow. He’s a great contributor to the team. But, as others have said, at this point, he may be better suited to the sixth man role. We’ve been struggling offensively and Brown is more polished at the moment. Robinson’s energy off the bench would be a great fit.

Comment by Dave in Orlando 02.07.10 @ 12:39 am

just want to give props to jj richardson…i think he has shown he can be the sub at the 5…now what with taylor…limited minutes..or position change(unlikely)….nice job pitt….other thought is good that pope was in foul trouble, because he was starting to do what samuels did too us…destroy our post defense…dixon would have had to play that zone…

Comment by drgags 02.07.10 @ 11:02 am

great win for pitt. the crowd was actually decent, but the student showing wasn’t what i thought it would be. gilbert brown came out firing. that was a big lift.

jermaine dixon’s defense on hazell was phenomenal. just stifling defense. hazell barely got the ball and when he did have an open shot (i think he had one) he rushed it and missed badly. his only points came on a lay-up in transition.

taylor did his best against pope, but herb is a crafty player and can finish a hook shot with both hands. i did like taylor’s effort today. he played really hard. richardson also had a nice game, all out every minute he is out there and got a nice dunk. mcghee was great today. pope couldn’t handle his size and strength.

great win. take care of business against wvu to set up a monster matchup on friday. i think pitt wins on friday.

Comment by omar 02.07.10 @ 11:08 am

Looks like Jamie’s staying with his same rotation, which is fine by me if the results continue to be like last night. A few observations from my limited online vantage point:

Seems like Jamie went to Brown a lot sooner. Brown was certainly focused and into the flow. Sure hope that continues. Like Aiken said in his comment, if Brown would realize he’s usually the best athlete on the floor, he could be an All-American.

McGhee looked more agressive in going for the ball, and there seemed to be better effort in getting it to him. Sure he still had those moment like getting blocked several times by smaller guys, but if he has a double-double, I bet we win most of the time.

Nice to see Adams hit a 3 during a key run. When was the last time he even took a shot?

Was surprised to see Miller come in before Richardson, especially after JJ’s play vs the Hoopies. Miller didn’t hurt us, but Richardson sure looks like the best option to spell McGhee right now.

Like Omar said, Taylor played hard. He was just overmatched by a stronger, more experienced player in Pope. Once again though, Taylor was obvious in his support of his teammates during the timeouts. Don’t think there’s an attitude problem with him at all. Probably frustration that he’s not able to contribute more is my take.

Finally, kudos to Omar and the others who braved the weather to support the effort. It was a chilly 55 here in Florida and the wind really played havoc with my golf game yesterday. Sorry, had to rub that in. ๐Ÿ™‚

Comment by TampaT 02.07.10 @ 1:27 pm

Tampat, I believe Miller was in at the 4 and not the 5 position. Richardson plays the 5 to spell McGhee but not the 4 so Miller wasn’t playing ahead or behind Richardson, just a different spot.

I really liked what I saw from Taylor on the glass, he visibly would seek out his man when the ball went up, he moved toward him, would close out, and got physical with his box out. It was encouraging to see him throw his body around. During this stretch where Pope had a few buckets on him, McGhee spelled Taylor and had problems with Pope also on the ensuing possessions, so I’ll give credit to Pope who was feeling it during that stretch.
I can’t wait to see Dante play when he gets some mojo back.

Comment by OntarioLett'sGoPitt 02.07.10 @ 1:53 pm

Thanks for the clarification on Miller/Richardson, Onatario. It was tough following the action via that online feed so I missed who Miller came in for and didn’t remember who was on the floor at the time. It just surprised me to see him in the game before Richardson. I expected to see Brown, Taylor, Woodall and then Richardson. I though Hillgrove had called the wrong name at first.

Comment by TampaT 02.07.10 @ 2:08 pm

Totally off topic: Is it just me who thinks Ovechkin is a showboat dick? I hate that guy!

Comment by TampaT 02.07.10 @ 2:23 pm

TampaT – He is, and who doesn’t.

Back to Bball, and what a total meltdown by Bobby Gonzales. To think, his name was actually mentioned as a successor to Ben Howland.

We really need some bench. Even if he is a total stiff, which I do not think to be the case, give Miller a chance. And Patterson. I just don’t get the redshirt theory. You only have 13 scholarsips. What good does the redshirt do?

Comment by PO'd Panther 02.07.10 @ 2:44 pm

Ovechkin’s a douche. Nobody likes the guy. He’s a classic cherry picker who doesn’t have much game other than sitting around waiting to get the puck and shoot… but damn is that shot nice.

Seriously, the fact that all he can do is shoot and that shot alone makes him possibly the best player in the NHL is saying something. I hate the guy, but as a Pens fan, when I see him winding up in the offensive zone I hold my breath.

Ok, enough about hockey.

It’s becoming apparent to me that Gilbert Brown is the best player on this Pitt squad. If he starts consistently dominating, watch out.

I just wish that Gibbs would turn back into the cold blooded killer he was a month ago. If that Gibbs comes back, I think Pitt’s a pretty good team.

And Dixon needs to stay healthy and practice as well. If he doesn’t twist his ankle in the SJU game, we probably beat USF.

Speaking of the Bulls, their streak was ended today. I think it’s clear that nobody is going to be sleeping on Dominique Jones anymore and it’s going to be harder for USF to sneak up on teams if that happens. He’s a very special player.

(BTW, go ahead and insert “Luke Harangody has been in college for 10 years” joke here. Dude’s seriously reaching Gerry Mcnamara levels in that department)

Comment by Jimbo Covert's my Dad 02.07.10 @ 4:02 pm

IMO.a redshirt makes perfect sense for the two players being redshirted. I saw both Patterson and Zanna in the summer league, and while I know they weren’t playing the best of competition, I saw a lot of potential in both. However, the last we thing we need is another 3 which is Patterson’s best position (although I’m sure he can play both the 2 and 4) thus, why not not redshirt him so e has another year.

In Zanna’s case, he is very athletic but raw .. and it is evident that he hasn’t played a lot of basketball. Further, he is even less built (especially in the shoulders) than Taylor and don’t think he could have contributed in the BE this year. Hopefully a year of practice and in the weightroom will allow him to be a key reserve this next year .. I definitely see him as a promising key contributor in 2 years.

Comment by wbb 02.07.10 @ 4:31 pm

While I agree that Gilbert can easily be the best player and most athletic on this team he is maddeningly inconsistent.

He is also most definitely the best (sometimes only) offense off the bench. I really think that’s why Coach Dixon starts Robinson. While we all agree Robinson plays better with limited minutes usually, there is no one else on this team right now who can come off the bench and generate offense like Gilbert. Many coaches keep an offensive star for the bench – remember Vinnie Johnson with Pistons, Michale Cooper with the Lakers. Start Gilbert and there is about 2-5 points a game from this bench.

Comment by BG Panther 02.07.10 @ 4:48 pm

I’m guessing Coach is making a point not starting Brown because of his transgression. I’m also guessing it won’t be long before he does start.

Comment by steve 02.07.10 @ 5:16 pm

I am a huge Gibbs fan and have taught that flat shot and quick release of his. I have gone back to earlier tapes to see what has changed….is he drifting R or L…fading etc…and absolutely nothing has changed in his shot. It is either a confidence matter and he’s pressing or he has some small injury that is annotying him.
Agreed that if we can get GB and Gibbs going, this team will again be tough to beat.

Comment by Dan 72 02.07.10 @ 6:20 pm

Just back from the Caps/Pens game. Ovechkin is a complete A hole…reminds me of Joey Porter in his exhuberence but agreed..he has the best shot in hockey!

Comment by Dan 72 02.07.10 @ 6:22 pm

1) I still don’t see whether Gilbert starts or not is abig deal … it is much more who finishes and gets the more minutes

2) the Pens game was an easy one to predict — I knew the Pens would have trouble maintaining focus after the night they had. Ovechkin sure has the best shot in the game but in both of his 3rd period goals, there were defenders right in front of him that didn’t make plays
