Player Stories in Recruiting, Part 1

Just a quick thank you to everyone. I’m not sure if there has been a busier day at this site. A lot of people came here yesterday for recruiting and the basketball stuff. That’s very humbling and still surprising even after many years doing this. That so many of you come here for Pitt information, thoughts and discussion; welll, it really does mean a lot to me.

Best quote of the day from Pitt’s 2010 football recruiting class came from Eric Williams.

Eric Williams had announced his intention to head to the University of Pittsburgh earlier in the summer. But that didn’t diminish the sense of pride on Wednesday morning when he faxed his paperwork to the university from the counselor’s office at Pennsbury High School.

“When the fax was done going through, I realized that I was a Pittsburgh Panther,” Williams said. “And I couldn’t begin to tell you how great a feeling that was. It’s something that you dream about and you understand what it means.”

Others were just glad to have the whole process over and done.

Arthur Doakes, a lineman for Lebanon, made his decision to go to Pitt official in the morning. Doakes, a 6-6, 330 offensive guard, signed with his mother, siblings and coaches around him.

“A lot of relief,” Doakes said of the signing. “Now I don’t have to worry about it anymore.”

Doakes made his verbal commitment in July. He said that the professional coaching experience of Panther head coach Brian Wannstedt and offensive line coach Tony Wise was one of the factors that helped him choose Pitt.

Yes, I know. “Brian” Wannstedt?

Two of Pitt’s commits played for the national high school champions Don Bosco prep — Brandon Sacco and Bryan Murphy.

Not only is Murphy, who is 6-foot-3 and 245 pounds, one of the most highly recruited prospects at the football factory that is Don Bosco, he’s regarded as one of the best to ever play for the Ironmen.

“Bryan is one of the most dominant players to ever play at Don Bosco, probably the greatest lineman,” Don Bosco coach Greg Toal said. “He’s just a tremendous leader, a tremendous worker. He’s tough and hard-working. Bryan is as high character a guy as we’ve ever had here, and he’s going to make us proud at Pitt.”

Murphy verbally committed to Pitt, which finished 10-3 and ranked 15th in the nation last season, in June. Pitt coach Dave Wannstedt visited Murphy at Don Bosco, an all-boys Catholic school in Ramsey, N.J., and at his Washingtonville home.

“I just felt really comfortable at Pitt,” said Murphy, a two-time all-state selection who had 47 tackles and nine sacks as a senior. “They run the same defensive schemes as Don Bosco, and I just liked the city. To play Division I football is great, to play at one of the top teams is even better. I want to play good enough to at least rotate in.”

At their team signing ceremony they got additional congratulations.

The Jones entourage included former Passaic Tech star Gerald Hayes of the Arizona Cardinals, who came by to support his fellow Paterson native. Hayes also congratulated Bryan Murphy and Brandon Sacco, who’ll be attending his alma mater, Pittsburgh.

Despite the snow in the Maryland-DC area DeMatha was determined to hold their signing day ceremony that included Pitt commits Shane Johnson and Jeff Knox.

Here’s a 1 minute signing day video from St. Joe’s (Montvale, NJ) which includes K’Wuan Williams.

Plenty more later.

Chas,

You deserve the following you’ve built. I heard about you from another Pitt alum and have visited almost daily since. You bring all of the Pitt info out there together into one spot and most of the followers here are real Pitt supporters and knowledgeable contributors. Plus you keep the wanks from other schools away so we don’t have to deal with their drivel like on other boards.

All the thanks goes to you.

Hail to PITT!

I just watched a video highlights clip of one of our newly signed recruits. It is a QB, his name is Mark Myers out of Ohio. You gotta check this kid out on the official Panther athletics website. Arm strength like this I haven’t seen out of a high school kid for like 30 years. Who does he remind me of? Can anyone say “Marino”! I know, thats quite a comparision, but if you’re old as dirt like I am and still have your longterm memory intact, you tell me he doesn’t remind you of a young Marino back in the day. What a quick release and he can throw that ball on a frozen rope when he wants to. Reviewing this recruiting class looks like the Panthers are in good shape for years to come.

Chas:

Thank you for PittBlather. Living in Indianapolis, you are a great outlet for me yearning for some Panther news. I appreciate all the hard work, dedication and your commentary on a variety of topics you cover. Thank you!

Maybe a Freudian slip?

Heard it through the grapevine that Brian Kelly had a late slight interest in the kid.

Chas, you make fandom from a distance so much more enjoyable. You have my gratitude for your work here.

i was wishing there would be less thurs night games, i guess i am wrong…I dont like the switch to play utah 1st game under the lights. Hope the Pirates dont play thurs when we play miami.

Comment by mike 02.04.10 @ 3:05 pm

Why put fans in the seats when you can have a Thursday night game. And the home opener is @1PM. Great….

Comment by Yeti 02.04.10 @ 3:25 pm

seems stupid to move the Utah game, for a slot on….CBScollegesports channel???? come on, its not even going to be an ESPN broadcast. Seems like a crap deal because I don’t know many people that even get the stupid CBS channel. Should have kept it where it was and got a warm up game first….

Comment by PITTapotamus 02.04.10 @ 3:32 pm

I really wish Tino (or Pat) would get a game under their belt before traveling to Utah. While I believe Pitt may be eventually the better team, I think beating Utah at their place early in the year will be difficult … especially the way their frosh QB ended this year playing really well in their bowl game.

Comment by wbb 02.04.10 @ 3:42 pm

Agreed on the kudos to Chas…those of us who regularly read this site have said it many times over….best site ever for Pitt info.

Perhaps Wanny should take a few lessons from Coach Dixon on how to prepare a team for early play. Every year Pitt BBall is killer in Nov/Dec and most of Jan….it’s Feb thru that NCAA thing that causes us problems and we are certainly parked in it right now.

Comment by Dan 72 02.04.10 @ 3:56 pm

I don’t like the schedule change at all. As mentioned above, when you are breaking in new players at a couple of key positions (QB, center, cornerback) it is nice to build up to better competition. Hell, the whole point of playing New Hampshire is to ease into the schedule. Now you add the possibility of an emotional let down for that game as well.

Also, I know several people that were looking forward to making the trip to Utah. Moving it to a Thursday night, before a holiday weekend, makes the trip almost undoable for most of them, since it means taking three days off of work just before a three day weekend.

Comment by Pantherman13 02.04.10 @ 4:31 pm

WTF???? That schedule change is baffling. Can anyone think of anything to like about it? I can’t

Comment by Dan35 02.04.10 @ 5:01 pm

Money in the coffers?

Comment by shadyforpresident 02.04.10 @ 5:22 pm

I was just discussing a road trip for the Utah game last week, now that’s in the toilet. Not flying on a holiday weekend for sure.

As always, we are informed and united because of Chas’ efforts. Thanks!

AS for the schedule…ugh… I have had it with Slippery Steve bending over whenever ESPN beckons. Enough already! Obviously, fans do not matter….because we HATE Thursday night games and Saturday noon games.

Get us in the Big11 so we can actually watch a HOME GAME AT 3PM or 8PM!!!

Comment by Pauly P 02.04.10 @ 8:00 pm

I love Saturday noon games – the fans aren’t too drunk yet (and that does matter to lots of fans) and I can drive up and back from Maryland in one day. If I choose to stay overnight in PGH I have the whole late afternoon and evening to do things.

PITT football used to be played religiously on Saturday afternoons at 1:00 – that’s what a lot of PITT fans grew up with and that’s what we like.

Comment by Reed 02.05.10 @ 6:46 am

Pauly, look at the B10 teams’ schedules in the central time zone (Minnesota, Wis, Iowa, etc.).. you may be surprised by how many 11 a.m. (local) starts they have. Moving to the B10 may not provide as many of 3:30 or 8:00 starts as you may want.
