Open Thread: St. John’s-Pitt

Gametime is 7pm on ESPNU. Plan accordingly. As the Mouse Monopoly wants carriers to pick up the channel, games on ESPNU do not end up on their ESPN360.com service.

This is a sort of must win game for Pitt. Not a make-or-break type, but it would be a really bad loss. No pressure, though.

Supposed to be very cold tonight — but no snow — in Pittsburgh so attendance at the Pete will bear noting.

I’m on DVR delay, and assuming the game doesn’t drive me to drink to excess, I’ll post some thoughts later.

I would say after watching this first half that I am even more impressed with Coach Dixon’s performance this season – we have a 3 and 1/2 man team (the 1/2 being Gilbert – never know what you’re going to get) and I don’t know how many coaches would be 15-4 with the lineup we have.

If we are going to finish 12-6, 11-7, 13-5 in the Big East, we simply have to get something from Dante or Travon and so far this game, they haven’t shown up. Not saying that they can’t do the job at some point, but right now we need a boost from someone other than Jermaine, Ashton, and Brad. You can’t win consistently with three guys.

This is supposed to be the “easy stretch” in the schedule, and we already lost to Seton Hall.

We can’t go 0 or 1 for 3 on this Hall-St. Johns-USF stretch.

We set ourselves up nicely by running through the tough early Big East schedule, but it doesn’t mean a thing if we can’t get to 10-11 wins in the conference and play in March.

Dixon looks to have rebroken his foot.

And St. Johns nearly have as many offensive rebounds as Pitt’s total rebounds right now. That won’t get it done.

At the game; any report on Dixon? We see the ice, but did Hillgrove or TV say anything?

Comment by Brian 01.28.10 @ 8:39 pm

Loss of Dixon for season would be a disiaster.
Email from those at the game says he was hurt from the beginning…and hurt bad

Recurring theme in B.E. wins is that someone steps up – Taylor against SU, Gilbert against Cinci, Nasir against Louisville. Gary stepped up tonight and got some big buckets – good for him.

If Jermaine is out, however, I would say shooting for 10-8 or 9-9 is what we are looking at – I don’t know where the lost scoring comes from. Let’s hope it’s just an ankle sprain or something, but it didn’t look good.

obviously please to get a W but still look ragged.
McGhee and Woodall played their best games in a while.

SJU outrebounded us by 10 and by 12 on the offenisve boards … that more than anything kept SJU in the game.

Taylor is on a very short leash, playing less than 2 minutes each half .. but note that I saw McGhee with at least 3 defenisve gaffes leaving people wide open under the boards in the 1st hald for points. And of course, those rebound numbers were put up without Taylor in the game.

Lastly, if Dixon is hurt, I would love to see Wannamker start at the 2, Gil at the 3, and Taylor backing up Nasir …. but know it will not happen.

Thanks for the link. Gary McGhee genac, genac…

Felt like the defense was much better in the second half and that just those few hoops from McGee opened things up immensely. Suddenly there was some space.

The Dixon injury does not look good. Brown was no offensive force, but felt like he was everywhere doing everything else. And despite his turnoveritis, really lovin’ Wannamaker these days.

Taylor continues to look lost. Guess this season can really be considered one of growing pains for him and we hope to see a big jump next year.

But good win. Nice to see them pull it together in the second half. And, again, free throws were huge!

Jamie Dixon said it was an ankle sprain for Jermaine in the postgame. At least he didn’t break the foot again. Hopefully he is only out for a week or two.

off topic but I believe to be pertinent. The following is an excerpt from NBC Sports blog today entitled ‘Bears lose another offensive coordinator candidate’:

Recently, Pitt offensive coordinator Frank Cignetti emerged as a candidate. And Cignetti now says he’s staying put at Pitt.

Pitt released a statement on Thursday evening from Cignetti.

“My return to Pitt last year was the realization of a longtime personal and professional goal,” Cignetti said. “It was made even more gratifying by the outstanding season we enjoyed. I couldn’t be more fortunate to work for Dave Wannstedt and coach these great kids. Despite recent reports connecting my name with other jobs, I am wholeheartedly committed to being at Pitt and continuing to establish our program among the nation’s very best.”
