All the Rumors Are Just That

Filed under: Uncategorized — Chas @ 3:55 pm

Sorry about late to post anything. I was running late on the Saturday viewing guide.

You will excuse me if I don’t get too worked up over anything published first and only on FootballScoop.com. They are willing to publish just about any rumor. The fact that a newspaper blog is going with the report only tells me how afraid newspapers are of being scooped and bypassed now.

Former Akron head football coach J.D. Brookhart, who was fired after the season, has spoken to Syracuse head coach Doug Marrone about one of the Orange staff vacancies, according to FootballScoop.com. The web site reported yesterday that Marrone had also spoken to Akron quarterbacks coach Walt Harris and hoped to talk with former SU running back David Walker. The curious connection or coicidence here is that Harris is a former Pitt head coach; Brookhart is a former Pitt assistant and Walker is currently on the Pitt staff coaching the running backs.

So here’s what amuses me. Syracuse needs a new offensive coordinator, receivers coach and running back coach. Yesterday the rumor surfaced about Marrone wanting to talk to Dave Walker and that he may have spoken to Walt Harris.

I’ve made no secret how highly I think of Dave Walker, and any rumors of his departure bug me. So a couple of Syracuse bloggers and I exchanged tweets over this sudden interest in Pitt related coaches leading to this from me:

@HoyaSuxa @NunesMagician Here’s the deal. You can have Harris and we’ll even toss in ex-Akron coach Brookhart, but we keep Walker.

Now the next day a rumor site says that Brookhart and Marrone talked. Hmm.

I’m not saying someone passed along Brookhart as a fake tip for their own amusement. But, um, it has happened before.

I am glad we lost the recruiting battle on Tyler Smith 4 years ago. Suspended due to drug and gun possession. These kids are given everything they need to succeed and so many of them are too dumb to even make it through college. I think it is absolutely atrocious that a 21 year old kid is carrying a gun around campus, let alone someone who knows what they have at risk if they were to get caught.

TODD, you can take these athletes out of bad enviroments, but you can’t take————————— out of the athlete.

Comment by alcofan 01.08.10 @ 8:39 pm

Spare me revisionism and don’t speak as if you know the kid’s background. There had never been a whiff of trouble with Smith until this season. Tyler Smith lost his father to cancer a couple years ago, and things have been a struggle since.

IT’s not a good scene and strikes me as a very sad situation with a kid in some trouble personally and legally.

Chas, FWIW, here is Zeise’s take on the David Walker rumor .. this was from his blog in yesteday’s P-G

Great link wbb…everyone should read. Some of Zeise’s best work and a real insight into the world of NCAA coaching vs. Dave Wannstedt, a class act.

Chas,

I do believe Tyler Smith did have a run in with the law when he was at Iowa, he was arrested for theft or burglary.

Comment by royboy 01.09.10 @ 11:59 am

I don’t know about that. He only played there as a freshman before Alford was fired and he transferred. I’d need a link to something on that.

Comment by Chas 01.09.10 @ 1:31 pm

Royboy is right Chas he did have a run-in. But it was for shoplifting.

I want to echo Dan72’s post on Paul Zeise’s comments about Dave Wannstedt. Zeise articulated very well what many (perhaps most) of us on this blog believe. I hope DW does not tire and retire but continues for many years. We’re proud that DW is a Pitt Man.

how is the Army game all-stars decided on? I really find it hard to believe that this Derby kid going to Iowa at QB is better than either QB Pitt is bringing in. Derby can’t come close to hitting wideouts that are open by 20 yards.

Comment by OntarioLett'sGoPitt 01.09.10 @ 3:12 pm

the Army all stars seem to be pretty much dtermined by Tom Lemming. And note that many of the these all-stars were chosen prior to their senior years. see attached link
link to pittsburgh.rivals.com

Thus, a prospect such as Mark Myers, who didn’t start last year, would have little chance of making the team. However, I read that he is going to play for a national all-star team on Jan 30 which can be seen on the NFL network

Pitt Football just ranked preseason #13 and favorite to win BE.

Comment by Dan 72 01.09.10 @ 4:57 pm

note that Pitt has the least amount of starters (11) returning than anyone else in the BE (WVU has 18), yet the feeling is that they will be one of the favorites to win. This is due to the quality depth the this PROGRAM now has.

Sure, we’ll never get the numbers of blue chips that Floridas and Bamas get, but there is also the skill of selecting and developing potential.

Comment by wbb 01.09.10 @ 5:11 pm

wbb, I remember when Pitt got the blue chips before bama and florida teams, as the program progresses and with wanny recruiting they wilol come. There will be sleepers also like unheard of freshman running backs. All we need to do is get into the big game and win all the rest will fall into place.

Comment by JIM 01.09.10 @ 7:16 pm

JM, we got plenty of blue chips back in the mid 70s /early 80s when Western PA was still a primary recruiting area. While we still have some quality here, we don’t nearly have the quantity of prime recruits that they have down South, Texas, California … or for that matter, even Esatern PA.

I agree that winning the big games will get us even better but we neither have the great recruting area, nor play to a large TV market or have 100,000 sellouts.

Just got back from the Cleveland Play-by-Play Classic to watch Pitt 2010/11 recruit Cameron Wright. His Benedictine Bengals defeated Garfield Heights in a matchup that was not close, until the end, with Cameron’s team winning 57-54 at the end. In what turned out to be the game saving move, Cameron stole the ball with less than 30 seconds to play, drove the length of the court for a layup, and then raced back to block a shot at the end to seal it.

His final numbers –off of memory– ended up to be 14pts (8-14 FT); 3 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal and 2 turnovers. He played the first half on the wing and most of the second half at point. He was not the MVP of the game (teammate 6’7” Nick Harney /not signed) had 20 points and was an absolute beast on the boards. Those two were clearly above all talent on the court.

Cameron is a long and lean 6’5” in the same look & feel as Sam Young. I’ll give my completely uneducated, non-expert, enthusiasm curbed opinions of what I saw. I apologize for the bad grammar, but this is what I put in my phone as notes…

Very aggressive, right hand shooter but is equally comfortable with left. Good court vision and shot mechanics seems very smooth. Deceptively fast, plays like a Sam Young but with smoother ball handling. Loves to go to the hoop. Only shot one 3pter. Started very lackadaisical in the first half off the glass and on defense. Defense was very passive in first half. Came out of the second half very aggressive and clearly ready to play. He was clearly charged up for the second half. Boxed out, tight defense, diving for loose balls (more Pitt style!). FT performance was disappointing (lack of concentration led to 8-14), but the mechanics are smooth. In the second half, he broke many presses with his ball handling. Leaper, and can get up and finish or grab big rebounds. Didn’t attempt many outside shots. Runs the lanes very well. Unselfish, will pass to open man. Seems coachable with his interaction with coach. Body is lean (no body fat). He was harassed the entire game and fought through screens and hacks. Overall, I loved his desire to get to the hoop and his ball handling skills. Shot mechanics seems good, but he really didn’t take many attempts. Passing was good, not great. Definitely someone with skills that I assume (with great coaching) could become a nice player for Pitt.

Pauly – thanks for the info. Just curious – is his body type like Sam Young also (i.e., broad shoulders, strong), or is he still on the thin side?

Comment by Pantherman13 01.10.10 @ 9:40 pm

Pantherman…

He is thin but cut in the right places (arms, legs). To me, he has a very similar body type to Sam. I was right behind the bench, and his shoulders seemed broad to me. His hands are huge too and there is no ounce of baby fat on him.

Thankyou for the above data on recruit Wright. Another subject if I may: It was a thrill to watch former Panthers, Fitzgerald, Stephens-Howling, Hayes,Revis in the pro-playoffs this weekend. Also, former Walt Harris reject, Joe Flacco managed the Ravens game quite well. Shady McCoy also performed admirably in a lost cause for the Eagles. Now I look forward to seeing Clark Session do his thing for the Colts. George

Comment by rev. george mehaffey 01.10.10 @ 10:57 pm

Rev George, in Walt’s defense, he was the only major head coach to recruit Flacco, and played Palko ahead of him. Flacco transferred after Wanny came and it was apparent that he wouldn’t have any PT until Palko graduating, give him only 1 year of PT.

On the other hand …note the offensive guru, Brian Kelly, had Tony Pike 4th on the QB depth chart at the start of the 08 season, but only with Ben Mauck being ruled ineligible and injuries to the next two QBs did Pike get a chance to play. Funny how things work out sometimes.

Comment by wbb 01.10.10 @ 11:35 pm

As to the Flacco situation – for once I’d love to hear an announcer state that Joe Flacco was a ‘late-bloomer’ during his college career… which he was. Instead they all make it sound like PITT shot itself in the foot with that decision, when that wasn’t the case at all.

PITT guys did relatively well over the weekend – but where was Gerald Hayes yesterday – was he hurt? I didn’t hear his name called at all…. only 4 tackles on the day.

Comment by Reed 01.11.10 @ 4:22 am

Would all fans would love to see Revis v. Fitzgerald in SB.

Comment by Hey Fralic, what do you do for Fun? 01.11.10 @ 7:41 am

wbb, You make a good point about “Jersey Joe”. You know your Panther lore. Keep on contributing. Speaking of signal callers, the competition for that position should be fierce at Pitt this spring and autumn. Before we all choose sides, gentlemen, — the teams’ the thing. George

Comment by rev. george mehaffey 01.11.10 @ 7:49 am

Just to add another 2 cents on Flacco, I am under the impression that he and Walt are actually on pretty good terms. I recall a report from about a year ago that the two actually talk/text somewhat regularly. Flacco had to know that he was not going to beat out Palko after Palko had such a successful 2004 season. I have to wonder if his decision to transfer was more a result of him falling behind Stull on the depth chart rather than having to wait out Palko.
