Last Unseen Game

Filed under: Basketball — Chas @ 5:13 pm

The game today (now playing) against Mt. Saint Mary’s is the last that won’t be seen on any TV. After today, whether on Big East/ESPN regional or somewhere on the Mouse Monopoly, there Pitt will be watchable on the tube.

The annoying thing — beyond the fact that I want to be able to see every game — is that this game will be very interesting to watch after Pitt has had a week off for finals. Coach Dixon has decided that the team needs some shaking up.

When the players reported for practice Tuesday afternoon they were informed that all starting positions were up for grabs. The practices were harder and longer than usual. One player described the past three days as a “boot camp.”

Another player said he wished Dixon would have done it sooner.

“The week was tough,” junior guard Brad Wanamaker. “I felt as though it was something we needed. It helped us mature. It will help us make better decisions. Every little thing we did coach was on us in practice. Coach was constantly on us to see the fight in us. Maybe it was something he should have done constantly throughout all of the practices. We would be a better team now. But it was good for us.”

Freshman forward Dante Taylor said when the players got to practice on Tuesday they discovered there were no gold jerseys. Gold jerseys designate the starters and represent a team hierarchy of sorts.

“When we came out for the first practice there was no gold team,” Taylor said. “He told us positions were open. This was the time for you to show if you wanted to be a starter or not. He was going to start the five guys who play defense.”

And for the first time this season, Coach Dixon really explained how the inexperience has been a problem. Not an excuse, but a problem.

“That has been the challenge,” Jamie Dixon said. “You have new guys who are used to doing it one way. You don’t have the guys to demonstrate it. Jermaine is our best defender, and he’s not there.

“I think we’ve had to do more teaching and more film. New guys generally don’t believe it until they see it in a game situation. And then if they continue to play minutes and not suffer the consequences then it becomes less believable. There has been improvement and there needs to be more improvement.”

In other words, how do you yank their asses off the court and onto the bench to make the point when you don’t have a viable option?

And of course, after today, the rotation changes again with Gilbert Brown returning.

Jamie Dixon will likely give Brown minutes at power forward and small forward, meaning once again that the rotation will change significantly.

The unique aspect of Brown’s return is that he has been barred from practice and has not been a part of the team since September. He has attended games, but has not been allowed to participate in any team-related activities during his suspension.

“There is no formula for that one,” the coach said. “That’s a unique situation. It is what it is and we’ll see come Sunday. It’s the situation that we’re in.

“The thing that’s unique is that he’s been in the program for four years. That’s something that should factor in some ways. He has played minutes. He has that going for him unlike the seven new players we have this year.”

We’ll see. I know I’ll be very curious to see what kind of shape Brown is in at this point.

Not trying to compare Pitt to UNC but the fact is UNC gave up 103 to Texas and lost by 13. Maybe Pitt won’t be as bad as some of those who think it’s going to be a long year.

Guess is that as long as Pitt can play solid D they will be in every game they play in the Big East this year.

That means to me they will win some games against some of the bigger talent in the BE this year and they will lose a game or two that they should’ve won.

20 wins isn’t a impossible goal to reach IMHO.

Just got home.

– Starting lineup was: Gibbs, Dixon, Wannamaker, Robinson, McGhee.

– Gary had one of the better games I’ve seen from him, particularly on defense. He was aggressive but stayed out of foul trouble by moving his feet.

– This team still struggles to find points from anyone other than Gibbs and Wannamaker. Wannamaker has really stepped up.

– Robinson is still really struggling to put the ball in the hoop while Taylor and Miller are struggling to just figure out what is going on.

– A nice win, but I would have preferred to put this team away earlier.

watched the game via internet on CBSsports.com

the defense, especially the guards, were beaten several times one-on-one. I know Dixon hates zone but he is going to have to seriously consider it.

the offensive movement looked better but still Gibbs and Wannamaker dominated the scoring (again)

Taylor did not see much PT particularly in 2nd half … in fact, until last minute, substitions were scarce in 2nd half

Jamie’s got to bite the bullet and move Taylor to PF or lose him.

I agree with Steve, also, this team will not win 20 games, guards are very iffy, wbb saw what I saw, wait until BE play the guards are going to get smoked big time.

This team will struggle all year, David D, what are you smoking or drinking?

Pitt has a hard time getting the ball inside and once they do Taylor/McGhee have hands of stone they are both a work in progress.

Jamie better move Taylor because he is not performing at center.

NIT’s unless they win the BE tourny

Comment by roy 12.20.09 @ 9:49 am

has anyone noticed what Duquesne has done since we needed a big comeback and 2 OTs to beat them. They got completely embarrassed by WVU (30 pts), close wins at home to RMU and Canisius (2 OT), and they just lost to Ooh-EEE-Pooh-EEE. Just another example of how far we have fallen.

Comment by wbb 12.20.09 @ 12:15 pm

It’s ridiculous to say what another team did after we beat them shows how far we’ve fallen. Comparisons like that show nothing. If we are playing that game look what Texas did with UNC, we must be pretty good to have hung with them. It just doesn’t work like that.

Comment by OntarioLett'sGoPitt 12.20.09 @ 12:19 pm

there seems to be much false pride taken by Pitt fans in that Texas game ..fact is that we lost by 16 in a game that Texas mostly played down to us. And please don’t imply that we played down to Duquesne .. if that is the case, then we have played down to everyone. Yesterday, we had much trouble putting away a 3-7 Northeast team.

Actually, Ontario, I agree that score comparisons are usually not very reliable … however, I honestly csn’t see indication, scores, stats or eye test taht doesn’t tell me that we are in for a long year. I knew this team would start slowly and improve as the year progressed … but that is what is bothering me the most — I haven’t seen much improvement at all thus far.

Comment by wbb 12.20.09 @ 1:00 pm

college bball is too unpredictable to tell. this team could gel once brown and dixon get back to full strength or they could fall apart. i think brown will help a lot if he stays healthy once we get into the heart of big east play

Comment by Tony Alabama 12.20.09 @ 1:02 pm

Roy-actually Taylor’s hands haven’t been a problem, his positioning has been. He’s had very little trouble catching the ball, but he needs to get in better position and make better post moves. Yesterday showed some incremental improvement as he actually showed some aggressive moves with the ball, although he continued to struggle with the finish.

McGhee had a nice game. He played wthin his capabilities, rebounded well and played decent defense. He does have hands of stone and struggles with entry passes at times.

I’m not sure how this combo is going to hold up in the BE-guess we’ll find out soon enough.

Comment by Pantherman13 12.20.09 @ 1:14 pm

we will definitely improve defensively with Dixon and Brown, but we seem to have issues with finishing on the offensive end which will become even more diificult come BE time.

Comment by wbb 12.20.09 @ 1:50 pm

Brown will be a marked improvement on both sides of the court. Assuming his finishes in a way Nasir has lacked so badly. I have no delusions that this team is anything more than a .500 team in conference play; however, with the style we play (and with SOMEONE finishing on plays), we may win some big games that we shouldn’t and possibly be in the discussion in March. Of course, we may lose a few we would never think of losing. Nonetheless, our style of play (and excellent coaching) will not put us at a point of being outclassed in conference play. Jamie earns his paycheck this year.

Before some of us fire up the Doomsday Express, we really should allow the season to unfold with our full compliment of players….

wbb you missed the point completely, I was saying you can’t say this is a good team b/c they hung with Texas who is obviously one of the best teams for most of the game, just like you can’t say they are in for a long year b/c they went 2 OT’s w/ Duquesne who has looked like crap since. No pride taken from it, just like there should be no panic taken from what Duquesne did since.

Do you think Gil and some of his teammates played a little ‘pick-up’ basketball during the last few months? I hope so!

Comment by stanley schweiger 12.20.09 @ 9:05 pm

The players are practicing like hell, plus studying. I seriously doubt that they are going to play pickup games with Brown.

Comment by Mark 12.20.09 @ 9:17 pm

Mark, I would entirely disagree. Having been around practices at both Pitt and Temple, I know that the players play pick-up ball for at least an hour after every practice, and they take it quite seriously. I would be shocked if they weren’t playing with Gil at the end of every official practice.

Comment by merlin 12.21.09 @ 1:15 am

These guys have trouble finishing, because for the most part, they have poor leaping ability. The air above the rim is safe with this collection of athletes. Brown is the only player that can truly sky and leave the floor in a hurry. Taylor is suppose to have that ability, but so far he hasn’t demonstrated any quickness getting off the floor. Lack of experience is one thing, but lack of athletic ability is another. It appears to me that the latter is our biggest problem.

Comment by ltl49 12.21.09 @ 2:11 am

Ontario, the problem is that the 16 pt loss may have been their best showing all year … tell me one other game where they impressed …. but more alarmingly, improved?

Maybe with the addition of Dixon and Brown, the light may go on … and again, maybe I’m spoiled by recent years, but I just see the same mediocre play against mediocre teams .. plain and simple

Comment by wbb 12.21.09 @ 8:12 am

and Ontario, BTW, I didn’t initially bring up the Texas game … you did.

Comment by wbb 12.21.09 @ 8:30 am

Not that I am privy to any inside info–But, an educated guess might be that Taylor spends sometime next summer at Pete Newell’s big-man camp, or something/someplace similar. Dante has the requistie athletic abilities, he just needs to learn polished post moves (such a camp would help accelerate the learnin process) and to get physically stronger (which will happen as he spends time in the weight room and as he gets a year older).

Comment by pitt1972 12.21.09 @ 8:45 am

I continue to be a believer in the Sagarin ratings (in hoops) as being a pretty decent indicator after a reasonable number of games have been played (which has happened by now–Monday 12/21) as to where a team stands. At this point, to the negative, Pitt is #8 among BE teams (#60 overall) and about 11.5 points/game weaker than Syracuse at the top; but to the positive, Pitt is about 9 points/game better than Rutgers at the bottom. Keeping in mind that the curent rating reflects a team without Gil Brown, and for all practical purposes, without a healthy Jermain Dixon. Thus, realistically speaking, this team should be expected to end up stonger than it is now.

That being said, do I expect it to contend for a BE title? No, I do not. But, I do expect it to eventually be playing at a higher level than it has been so far. How much higher? I honestly don’t know. My hopefull guess is that it could be about 4-5 points/game better. If that can be achieved before it is too far into the worst part of the BE schedule; then, perhaps, this team would/could move up into the current Georgetown, Connecticut, St. John’s, Seton Hall range which 4-5 points/game better (per Sagarin) represents. [The middle of that range might be around #25 +/- nationally. Amazing isn’t it that the difference between the #60 team and being in the top 25 is only 4-5 points?] If that’s possible, making the NCAA’s could happen. The key, IMO, is whether that level can be reached before too many early BE games are lost to preclude the 10-11 win BE season needed for an NCAA bid. FYI–Today’s Sagarin rating link–http://www.usatoday.com/sports/sagarin/bkc0910.htm

I was sorta joking at the beginning of the season about having 2 squads splitting each half. But as things have transpired it may not be such a bad idea.

Think of the reasons why:

1) These guys are just getting to know each others’ names, it may be way too late before they learn each others’ games. (not bad for a Monday AM, eh?). So why not make it easier?

2) Frankly we appear to not only have middling talent, we have a lot of it. Why not wear teams down with two platoons that could avail themselves fairly well?

3) With all the subbing Jamie does now it’s easy to come in out of sync, make a few turnovers and get yanked. A continuous 15 minutes would negate that.

A 100% Gilbert Brown and a 100% Jermaine Dixon may make this idea moot. But, on the other hand, what better way than this to get them into playing shape?

Just an idea….

Comment by steve 12.21.09 @ 10:06 am

The Big East schedule is interesting this year – after DePaul, the next 5-6 games could be brutal. Picking up a win or two during that stretch would be nice, but it will be interesting to see how this team emerges from that stretch psychologically. Even if they lose the majority of those games, if they start to show some signs of improvement, and Dixon and Brown add some leadership, it will serve them well as the schedule lightens a bit in early February.

Things may not look good right now, but I’m not yet ready to write-off this season…there is just too much that is still in flux.

Comment by Pantherman13 12.21.09 @ 11:19 am

I’ve asked this before, but I’ll asked it again, why doesn’t this Richardson kid get any playing time?

Comment by ltl49 12.21.09 @ 12:18 pm

Itl49–Coach Dixon indicated Richardson has leg injury issues that are preventing it.

Comment by pitt1972 12.21.09 @ 2:58 pm

Pitt1972, What kind of injury, and when did he say that? I was also curious because he has looked good in his limited action and him being hurt would explain the lack in time. This is also the point in the year when “injuries” turn into red shirts for guys who played earlier and I hope this isn’t necessarily the case because I really like seeing this kid play.

Comment by OntarioLett'sGoPitt 12.21.09 @ 8:07 pm

J.J. is fun to watch because he plays with a lot of energy and effort. In Green Tree this summer, he often outplayed Taylor and Miller.

He is, however, a 6’6″ center with somewhat limited athletic ability. His ceiling is pretty low, it is hard to see him developing into a starter on BE title contending team. Unfortunately, if pitt needs another scholarship for Moore or someone else, J.J. will be high on Jamie’s list of potential transfers.

It is a really, really bad sign if we’re expecting a major contribution from J.J. this year.

Comment by Boubacar Aw 12.22.09 @ 11:08 am

Dixon on the recent ESPN-U postgame merely said that he was disappointed he couldn’t use JJ but that he had nagging leg injuries dating back to his HS days. No further explanation was given. This opinion was brought up by Dixon himself and wasn’t in response to a specific inquiry about Richardson by the announcer doing the interview. The impression left by Dixon was that he felt a healthy JJ Richardson would have more to offer (at least for the near term, I suppose) than neither Miller or Zanna.
