If it weren’t for the fact that I never got a chance to do a post-game post on the Backyard Brawl, I would be done with it. There is just too much going on this week.

The City Game is on Wednesday (7pm on CBS College Sports Channel) at the Civic Arena and I would consider it a toss-up this year. Perhaps even favoring the Stage Magicians at this point as they should be aware that this could be their best chance to snap the losing streak. Plus Pitt has a Friday night home game with New Hampshire.

Saturday is that whole River City Rivalry game that has meaning for the second straight year. This decides the Big East’s BCS bid and whether Pitt finishes as co-Big East champs.

I’m going to skip the media recap, since it is so late.

I think we all know that QB Bill Stull had his worst game of the season. A lot of  “bad” Stull and “same-old” Stull. I’m not going with that, but he did pick a lousy time to forget his footwork and not stride forward when throwing. Yes, some of that was because the O-line was really bad for much of the game and struggled to protect. All those stories that went with the theme of Stull’s redemption are not looking so hot today.

It also didn’t help that Dorin Dickerson had two huge drops. They weren’t TD passes, but with the pressure WVU kept bringing, catching those over the middle may have created some doubt on the Mountaineer’s aggressive defense and forced them to drop a linebacker back to not let Dickerson be the outlet. I also can’t help but think that it might have helped get the rest of the offense in gear and not have Stull spend the whole game looking only for Baldwin.

Playing so poorly on the national stage was also likely a killer for Dickerson winning the Mackey award. Especially with Hernandez from Florida having another good game while romping over FSU. I imagine Stull and Dickerson were back in their apartment late Friday night just staring at each other blankly saying, “What the hell just happened?” Over and over.

The O-line looked so ill-prepared in that game. Stunned that West Virginia’s defense would bring pressure up front all night.

On the defense, the secondary definitely missed Aaron Berry. A WVU offense that has specialized in turning the ball over was error free.

Aaron Smith still returning punts? I was left trying to explain that tomy family. My aunt turned to me after the second time he just ran sideways out of bounds, “Is he afraid to get hit?” I could only sigh and nod. I can’t even get mad at Smith any longer. This is what he’s done all season. In game 11 it is on the coaches who keep trotting him out there.

Then there was the inexplicable field goal tries with Dan Hutchins. When he was trotted out there for a 53-yarder, I lost it. I don’t care if there was a 35-mile/hour gust behind him, he doesn’t have that kind of range. It is a known thing. Coach Wannstedt said so before the season and nothing this year has indicated otherwise. Yet, he trotted him out there. If he wants to take that shot, that’s supposed to be where you use Kevin Harper.

There’s some other stuff, but I’m going to let it go. Too much ahead. And Pitt can still make it a hell of a good year.

Right on point Chas. My brother and I were discussing those very same plays/issues as what cost us this game. The only thing I think you missed was the chop-block penalty at an incredibly inopportune time. We went from having a first down inside the twenty to missing a field goal.

Off topic but maybe somebody here knows. I collect game used Pitt football jerseys and was just given one as a gift yesterday.

It is #77 G. Quivers. He played during the Walt Harris years because there is a, “Commitment, Teamwork, Pride,” patch sewn on the jersey.

Does anyone know this player’s first name and his position? I assume he is an offensive linemen due to the way the sleeves are cut and the number. I have googled and found nothing on this player.

Comment by AJ 11.30.09 @ 2:25 pm

agree with all Chas has written. Face it, Aaron Smith is returning punts for one reason … not to turn it over. I don’t believe he was a returner in high school, C Saddler was ut Saddler had an issue with fumbling punts in preseason.

Comment by wbb 11.30.09 @ 3:06 pm

WVU had a banner weekend. The Eers basketball team looked every bit worthy of the No. 8 ranking in winning the tourney they were at in Anaheim. Looks like this is just one of those years when we have to just suck it up .. but of course, a BE FB title will do mcuh for the psyche.

Comment by wbb 11.30.09 @ 3:11 pm

I wouldn’t even call Aaron Smith a punt returner, he’s more of a punt catcher. Painful to watch. Hopefully Saddler can gain the staff’s confidence and win the job next year.

AJ – I did a quick internet search and didn’t find anything. ESPN.com only goes back to 2002. Did you try the Pitt media guide? It has a lot of past information in it.

Comment by Bryan 11.30.09 @ 3:34 pm

R. Quivers is probably reading this post and thinking “HOLY SHIT SOMEBODY REMEMBERS ME!!”

Comment by Luke 11.30.09 @ 5:04 pm

AJ, I think it’s Gary Quivers 1998 PG Fabulous 22 honoree. link to news.google.com

I vaguely remember him- as in when you said G. Quivers I knew it was either Gary or Gerry Quivers. If he was a hs senior in 1998 he must not have enrolled at Pitt because he played for Youngstown State in 1999.

this is generally a pretty good resource for finding old rosters. no g. quivers though, which likely confirms ChrisA’s theory…

Pitt opened at -1.5. The line has moved to a pick em.

Comment by Omar 11.30.09 @ 5:27 pm

I’d like to hope that this loss inspires the ole’ ‘now we’re more focused than ever/this was our wake up call’ mentality.

We have the talent and the ability to execute a victory against Cinci. As good as Pitt has been for the most part this year and as far as the program has come, THIS team has not come far enough to not have a hiccup like the WVU game. Certainly we should have been able to win that game, but we haven’t reached that domination point.

Here’s to the opportunity of a BCS bid and making forward strides. BCS bid is absolutely obtainable and everything is in place. Hail to Pitt.

Can’t help but think with Chubbie Charlie’s firing that Brian Kelly is going to use this Pitt game as his “2nd interview/audition” for the ND job…

Apparently the weather is going to pretty bad. I always hear how bad weather is more challenging for the offenses, but in my recent memory, bad weather always seems to be more difficult for the defenses.

Comment by Pauly P 11.30.09 @ 6:39 pm

I hate the “co-champs” thing.

The team that gets the BCS bid, which means they won any and all tiebreakers, is the conference champ. Plain and simple.

No offense to the Huskies, but does anyone but me find it ridiculous that UConn has a Big East co-championship on their resume from 2007, when they were housed by WVU (the other co-champion)?? Or that we share our 04 championship with like 93843 other teams??

It just seems insanely stupid to me.

Comment by Jimbo Covert's my Dad 11.30.09 @ 7:06 pm

pauly:

yeah, that’s usually how it seems to work. the distracted coach puts the beat down on the other team. that’s exactly what happened with rich rod and wvu a couple years ago. that’s also what happened with pitt and ben howland vs. marquette. roy williams when he left kansas for unc had a similar result. oh wait…

Comment by omar 11.30.09 @ 8:03 pm

I have a theory to forecast football results. Whichever way the spread surprises you, go with it, not against it. For example, I thought Pitt should have been favored over WVU (higher ranking, fewer losses, won last two meetings, etc) Instead, it was a pick-em. Therefore, pick WVU. Cincinnati should be favored over Pitt (undefeated, higher ranked, etc). If it’s a pick-em, Pitt should win.

Comment by 66Goat 11.30.09 @ 8:26 pm

Darnell Dinkins now playing for N.O. Saints.

Comment by alcofan 11.30.09 @ 9:57 pm

Go dinkins. Good for him. As for the game. Failure of the coaches and stull to do anything in the passing game while having a dominant running game too was huge. If you look at this season, who is pitt’s best win? There really isn’t one. I don’t feel good about Saturday. Pitt’s secondary is going to struggle and I have no faith in stull.

Comment by Matt in NYC 11.30.09 @ 10:51 pm

Blair had a double-double yesterday playing less than 17 minutes, and it looks like Young started tonight and is in double figures points-wise. Go Pitt Alumns.

The kool-aid man fired from Notoriety Dame. Please let the distractions for Kelly and Cinci begin.

Jimbo – yes

Comment by Reed 12.01.09 @ 5:10 am

Hopefully Cignetti is putting in some plays to counter the blitz. A few outlet passes would have slowed down WVU.

I still think that Hynoski should run the ball 3 -5 times a game to help keep the defense on its heals. This should be done on first downs. Remember how RichRod used his bruising fullback.

Also, how can you not throw to Byham at least 2-3 times a game? Mix it up more. When you throw deep to the big guy in triple coverage someone else must be wide open underneath.

This is the biggest game in years. We need to play to win. Wanny must resist his urge to play conservative. It is time to play with reckless abandon. Put Mason and Fields in to blitz once in a while.

Speaking of Darnell Dinkins, some other Panthers had a nice weekend in the NFL. Clint Session returned an interception for a td. Larod Stephens Howling ran back a 99 yard kick return and made some terrific special teams plays. Lesean had 21 touches for 101 yards. Revis returned an interception for a td. Fitz didnt have a great game but hit a nice milestone of 500 career receptions reaching the milestone in 87 games (the second-fewest in NFL history).

Nice to see our guys performing at the next level – thats what recruits really look at.

Comment by Coach Ditka 12.01.09 @ 7:39 am

May I offer a correction to the editorial on the International Bowl? Temple will NOT be playing because they lost their divisional championship game to Ohio University Saturday last. The WINNER of the Central Michigan – OU contest will be in Toronto against a Big East Team. The above mentioned contest will be in Detroit (Central vs. OU) This Friday nite on ESPN or ESPN 2. Pitt WILL beat Cinci but that is no guarantee that Pittsburgh fans will leave their beloved Steelers and their Bud Lights for either New Orleans or Jacksonville. It must be discouraging to coach in an NFL city. The $$$ only go so far. George in Columbus.

Here is a blog in today’s Post-Gazette from Zeise that talks about Pitt’s bowl situation
link to community.post-gazette.com

Here is an excerpt from one the responses to this blog which I believe provides an interesting perspective:

… the bowls (then and now) are political, the rankings are political .. and the national title remains an ambiguous label. We live in a capitalistic society and have to live with the consequences .. both good and bad.

Nontheless, the fact that despite playing for the BE title this Saturday, Pitt was severely criticized for a close loss at WVU is a definite sign of progress where expectations have been raised .. this is good especially if Pitt is able to compete again and again for the BE title.

Just enjoy the action on the field … that is really it will all ever be about.

Comment by wbb 12.01.09 @ 8:42 am

Coach Ditka, note that in addition to Stepehns-Howlings, Revis, McCoy and Session all scoring points this weekend, Antonio Bryant also caught a TD pass … although the Pitt guy who would be the most likely to score, Larry Fitz, did not.

It is an absolute disgrace that this game is not sold out yet.

Is anyone else having a hard time forgetting about the wvu game? As excited as I should be for this saturday I just cant help looking back. I guess as the game draws closer I will refocus on cinci. I just hope we go all out and play to win. Cinci will get their points I just hope our Offense gets clicking again.

Comment by Coach Ditka 12.01.09 @ 10:09 am

the thing i like, ill put up 30 points on them. ILL is awful, i think pitt should be able to beat them if they play the way they did early on.

i know…the wv game has left such a bad taste in my mouth.

Comment by quaziemoto3 12.01.09 @ 11:02 am

Isn’t it ironic that Pitt losses by 3 points to a team that lost by 3 points to Cincy and drops 7 spots in the polls – yet GT gets dominated by Georgia and only drops 4 spots…poll biased.

Comment by mark 12.01.09 @ 11:30 am

mark,
i have been email friends and telling anyone within earshot about that travesty.. We ose by 3 to a rival on the road and drop 7 while gateach gets manhandled by uga and barely moves.. BS

Comment by cdmoore25 12.01.09 @ 12:53 pm

I’m over the WVU game, and quite honestly, was over it rather quickly considering the perspective over the past 10 years with Pitt football. Losses at home to non-BCS teams like Bowling Green and Navy, and road losses to middle-of-the-road BCS teams like NC State, Nebraska, Michigan State seem to linger the longest for me and hurt way worse for Pitt, the Big East, and my liver. I don’t think we should hang our head when we lose to a rival (on the road) in a year where they will likely win 9-10 games and finish in the top 25. Should we have won? yeah…but it’s not like the losing scenarios in the aforementioned…IMHO.

We’re playing for a championship and BCS bid, on the field. That’s all we could have asked for before the season started. Many of us, me included, had this team winning ~ 7 +/- 1 games. In reality, they have exceeded many of our expectations.

Like I have said many times, 10 wins is an impressive mark and something that we could realistically get — via Cincy or via our Meineke Car Car opponent.

Let’s hope we get 11 wins and a $18M paycheck for the university (and Big East).

Hail to Pitt!

Comment by Pauly P 12.01.09 @ 1:02 pm

Coach Ditka, I hate to give this up to the hoopie trolls on this blog, but to the victors go the spoils…It makes me sick that we lost to WVU. As an alum, I can’t stand it. Even if we beat Cicny and smash an SEC team in the Sugar bowl, I’ll still have that lingering “yeah, but we lost to WVU” feeling. And that is just the way a true “rivalry” should be. Frankly, I can’t wait until next fall when we meet them again at home. That does not mean I will not be at Saturday’s game, screaming my fool head off, it just means losing to your rival sucks until you beat them again! LETS GO PITT!

Comment by HbgFrank 12.01.09 @ 1:05 pm

Wbb, Mark, and cdmoore, you guys are right on the money. Realistically, all college football polls are a sham. Money equates in to the politics of the pollsters. The BCS power conferences are always those with the most “fans in the stands.” The college presidents, of the so called power conferences, will never allow a real playoff system as long as their millions of alumni are making sure they are guaranteed millions of dollars a year. Follow the money( which is the fans in the stands) and you’ll find out why Pitt drops like a rock after losing a close game to a decent team, while GT gets hammered and slips slightly in the polls. Look how quickly the pollsters have rushed our friends at Ohio State, and Iowa back into the top ten of the BCS standings. Futhermore, they tried to get Penn State into the top ten but ran out of room. Watch how fast Cincy falls if we beat them, or how quickly they’d drop Boise State or BCU if they stumble. College football in reality is a farce,” It’s all about the “fans in the stand,” and sorry Pitt fans, but we fall very
short in that area.
