Pittsburgh Mayor Ravenstahl has apparently joined in the whole national recognition for Pitt thing, by declaring Friday “Turn it blue day.”

The Panthers, ranked as high as No. 8 in the country, will face the Fighting Irish in front of a soldout crowd and national ABC television audience. Pittsburghers are encouraged to wear their Pitt Blue on Friday to get ready for the game.

Fans should also wear their Pitt Blue to Heinz Field Saturday night as Pitt and Pittsburgh are showcased to the rest of the country.

“This weekend, let’s `Turn it Blue’ and show our support for our own hometown team as they take on the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame,” Ravenstahl said. “We’ll have the eyes of the nation watching us, and I’m confident that with the talent we have this season and with the support of Pitt fans, our team will be successful. Go Pitt!”

What a sweet gesture. I’m sure that this more than makes up for the dickish attempt by the Mayor — after winning reelection — to impose a 1% tuition tax on college students in Pittsburgh to cover the budget shortfall. I’m sure the students will just embrace him now.

I’m guessing Ravenstahl won’t be making a public appearance at the game.

[…] This post was mentioned on Twitter by Pitt Panthers Buzz and Chas Rich, Brian Ising. Brian Ising said: RT @ChasRich27: Day after Pgh mayor launches plan for 1% coll. tuition tax, he gets behind Pitt for the Pitt-ND game. link to bit.ly […]

Figures he would ask the city to “turn it blue” when the visiting team ALSO uses a similar shade of blue in its official colors…

Comment by Ben 11.10.09 @ 5:30 pm

It’s about time the students pick up some of the tab for the problems they cause!!!!

Comment by joe 11.10.09 @ 5:31 pm

The Pitt students burn down Oakland after the super bowl, cause all kind of chaos during the G-20, drink and piss all over the east end! And what do they pay towards Police, Fire and Medics??? NOTHING!!!!

Comment by ron 11.10.09 @ 5:33 pm

So because the G-20 problems happened on campus, it was Pitt students’ fault? Do you have any evidence of that? And what SHOULD Pitt students (who pay taxes wherever they are from, or are someone’s dependents, and who pay the city tax if they work while in school) pay for municipal services? some of those they do already pay for as part of their tuition and fees.

I’m not sure you understand much about “the pitt students”

Comment by Ben 11.10.09 @ 5:39 pm

College kids get wild, politicians (both parties to be fair) are crooked, and the world somehow keeps turning.

Now onto the important stuff…

At least there’s an attempt being made by the city to acknowledge a local football team that’s not the Steelers!

Comment by Jimbo Covert's My Dad 11.10.09 @ 5:51 pm

Right on, Jimbo!

Comment by dugdog 11.10.09 @ 5:54 pm

BTW, that wasn’t a diss on the Steelers. Like I am with all other teams from the city, I’m a diehard Steeler fan.

It’s just refreshing to see Pitt football get their day in the sun in that town.

Comment by Jimbo Covert's My Dad 11.10.09 @ 5:56 pm

Pitsburgh largest employers, UPMC and Pitt, WEst Penn Alleghney Health, Duquesne and CMU do not pay taxes … but still, why pick on the students? … although in fairness, they do cause some civic problems.

Comment by wbb 11.10.09 @ 6:15 pm

Taxing the students is perfect. Many cannot vote in Pgh. as they are from other places. Pittsburgh has always been about appeasing the 60+ crowd. I wonder what the tax revenue would look like if the University packed up and moved out of the city?

Anyway, still nice that the city acknowledged Pitt. Wait until we win our BCS bowl. Luke will have a big ‘ole parade for the Panthers. Of course admission will be $20. 🙂

Comment by Yeti 11.10.09 @ 6:27 pm

Wow. That IS dickish. Perhaps he should have an entry in dickipedia.org

Comment by Chuck Morris 11.10.09 @ 7:16 pm

Ron & Joe
Please tell me that your postings are satirical. You can’t really be serious…..right? “Burned down Oakland after the Super Bowl? Pissed all over the east end? It’s about time that the students pick up part of the tab” The G-20 damage was caused by protesters from out of town, a couple of small fires of shitty dorm furniture hardly constitutes burning down Oakland and I see more public urination at a Steeler game than what happened in Oakland during the G 20.

Comment by Fear The Mustache 11.10.09 @ 7:35 pm

my guess is the security and clean-up espense from the Steeler and Penguins victory parades, not to mention the annual St Patrick orgy, largely trumps what happened in Oakland after the super bowl and during the G20.

Comment by Pidoublet 11.10.09 @ 7:54 pm

Typical Pittsburgh politics…looking for money somewhere, where to find it? Ah yes, let’s tax the students! ‘Cept it’s not really apparent to the students–their parents are probably footing the bill, or their student loans are deferred for the six or seven years they’re in school, and when they finally get the bill, they’ll never really notice that 1% tax. So clever, Ravenstahl!

What are you getting for your money? Why do you let it stand?

Comment by Lou 11.10.09 @ 7:57 pm

This city would be a complete utter disaster without the Universities. No reason to irritate your best player.

Comment by Omar 11.10.09 @ 7:58 pm

Ron and Joe have some points (exaggerated, perhaps). But working students do pay earned income taxes. Off-campus renters pay real estate tax through their rent. Anybody who eats or shops off-campus helps pay that business’s real estate tax. Oakland is hardly a total loss for the City of Pittsburgh.

Sure, Pitt, UPMC, Duquesne, and CMU should probably pay taxes, as should Penn State, Temple, hell, Slippery Rock. But none of them do. So I’m OK with what Ravenstahl did in taxing students… which is big of me, of course, given that I graduated in 1994.

My first reaction to “back to blue” was like Ben’s. A few years back Indiana had a “wear red” (or whatever) day when hosting Ohio State, so that they could have a great aerial shot of a sold out stadium. Cheesy. But hey, whatever it takes.

Just beat the Irish.

Comment by Lee in Altoona 11.10.09 @ 8:08 pm

@Pidoublet, I see what you’re saying, but I believe it is customary to wait until AFTER the Notre Dame game is played and won for individuals to quantify exactly how proud they are of the team.

Comment by Brian H 11.10.09 @ 8:14 pm

Especially in Pittsburgh…Don’t get me wrong, I love the city and Pitt, but the political photo ops are ridiculous.

Comment by Pidoublet 11.10.09 @ 10:07 pm

I’m surprisingly ok with the 1% tax on tuition. Maybe that’s because I’m a city resident.

God, I must be getting old.

Comment by Bryan 11.10.09 @ 11:14 pm

We’ve all ‘been there’ and ‘done that’ while students at Pitt, so let’s watch what we say about pissing in this place and that. Plus, I feel like the single couch burning on Bigelow in ’07 was a nice little shot at the folks down in Morgantown after the nice surprise against WVU. Quite poignant, if you ask me.

I sadly didn’t picture the mutual conflict with Notoriety Dame until Ben mentioned it at the beginning of the post. Ole Steelerstahl didn’t think of a ‘make it gold’ proposition?

There’s quite a bit of media hype starting to circulate around this weekend’s game. All the talking heads are determining this as Weis’s make-or-break game (duh). I only hope that Wanny and the boys will continue to keep their nose to the grindstone and exercise the game plan we expect. It would be quite satisfying for Wanny to bury Weis’s ass.

Good coaching decisions, ground attack from Lewis/Graham, decisions and execution from Stull, and efforts from Dickerson/Baldwin/et al. should make for a good outcome.

If everyone is in blue you won’t be able to tell the 25,000 ND fans that will be there or the 10,000 that bought season tickets just to go to this game.

Last weeks attendance was disquesting. 7 and 1 beautiful day for Syr. and the upperdecks were almost empty.

Comment by JP 11.11.09 @ 7:57 am

I’m wondering how much, if any, of an advantage for ND to play in this ramped-up, full-house environment, since they are used to it.

Comment by wbb 11.11.09 @ 9:15 am

I think Heinz Field looks awesome in the Fall when it’s full of navy blue Pitt sweatshirts.

I wish it happened other than when we play Notre Dame and West Virginia.

Check out the PG this morning, Is that the real Bob Smizass?

Comment by The Dallas Panther 11.11.09 @ 10:12 am

Seems like Smizass to me. Instead of crediting Pitt he diminishes the opposition.

Comment by shadyforpresident 11.11.09 @ 10:33 am

Wasn’t the turn it blue idea started within the athletic department? I thought they did it for USF in order to get the idea in people’s heads so the participation will be higher for this weeks game.

I’m happy to see Ravenstahl jumping on board, even if it is to smooth things over with the tax. Positive publicity for Pitt is never a bad thing, and with a win this week maybe some more people around the city will start to take notice.

Comment by Scott 11.11.09 @ 11:46 am

Having taught undergraduate students at Pitt at various times over the past decade, I have been repeatedly surprised by how many of them are working part time. The stereotype of wealthy mommy and daddy (which I think Mayor Ravendink holds because he has frat boy envy) doesn’t really hold for a lot of these kids.

Also, I have a hard time understanding the argument that Pitt kids need to pay for city policing when Pitt operates a full time police department …

This is a money grab from people who cannot really fight back. It is dishonest. Typical politician move.

Comment by Hollow Panther 11.11.09 @ 11:57 am

No, turn it blue for the South Florida game was student motivated. I’m sure the AD had the Notre Dame game in mind when it threw it’s support, advertising, and free t-shirts behind it, though.

It’s really no different than the “Code Blue” campaigns of previous years, except we have a pretty good team and the AD can claim it’s a student initiative.

Comment by Kyle 11.11.09 @ 12:06 pm

I can’t believe there is support for this 1% tax on students. Ravenstahl is an absolute SNAKE for how he brings this up after his election was it was obviously something he knew about. I liked him, but he has lost my vote forever.

Students are already crushed with student debt so let’s just tack on some more. That debt can’t be wiped away through bankruptcy. Think about that. Thirty year old adults can be bailed out of poor financial decisions while 18 year olds cannot.

As for all the issues students cause, 80% of those are served by the PITT police department (CMU & Duquesne being lesser offenders). You seem to forget the ridiculous amount of good things that these colleges do for the city.

I’m seriously disgusted by anyone who supports this measure.

Change of subject… Dokish just posted that Pitt has just landed a commitment from J.J. Moore. That is a major get. Congrats Coach Dixon. Also back to Pitt-ND, I was at the Notre Dame-Navy game, the Irish are vulnerable up the middle, cheers for some gives to Hynoski up the middle.

Pitt basketball recruiting is exploding. They have signed two top classes in a row. The latest class has 3 players, none of which is lower than a 4 star. JJ Moore, Isaiah Epps, and Cameron Wright are the newest Panthers.

Pitt may be able to compete for a final 4 in two seasons and possibly as early as next year.

Wow! Holding on to Jamie Dixon has been a slam-dunk, grand slam decision.

I know a lot of Pitt fans think there’s a local Pittsburgh media bias against Pitt.

But I always thought that Smizik (suprisingly) was more than fair to the Panthers. Plus, the guy’s a Pitt alum.

If you’re looking for anti-Pitt bias, I wouldn’t look at Smizik.

Comment by Jimbo Covert's my Dad 11.11.09 @ 3:42 pm

As a student, a 1% tuition tax means I lose enough money to buy food to eat for two to three weeks. What a horrible horrible idea that I’m gonna try my best to make sure doesn’t happen.

Comment by Patric 11.11.09 @ 3:46 pm

actually, Smizik is a glass-half empty guy so even when he writes something positive about Pitt, he almost is sure to add some negative comment about the Big East. I thought he was extremely unfair to Walt in his last couple of years … but then again, he doesn’t seem to lavish anyone or any team with praise (except for the Steelers which are hands off, and he rarely writes about the Pens.)

Comment by wbb 11.11.09 @ 3:58 pm

Patric,
How about the 3-4% annual increase in tuition every year? Do you try to stop that? I’m against the tuition tax by the city but the presidents of the uninveristies take more each year.

Comment by Fletch 11.11.09 @ 4:38 pm

Great rant by Zeise!

Comment by Pauly P 11.11.09 @ 4:54 pm

There is nothing I enjoy more than message board debates about taxation but,

J.J. MOORE IS A PANTHER!!!!

From everything I’ve read, this is HUGE get for the program and Brandin Knight snatched him right out from under Rick Pitino. I guess recruiting is a lot tougher when you also have to deal with a former mistress extorting you. Jamie Dixon and staff have been able to a lot of great things with under-the-radar type recruits, I can’t wait to see what he can do with big name guys.

What a week! FBall: Top 10 in AP, Primetime game against Notre Dame Saturday. BBall: Stole a big-time recruit right out from under a conference rival, Biggest recruit of the last 25 years debuts Friday, plus a banner raising of last years Elite Eight appearance.

Comment by Bryan 11.11.09 @ 5:39 pm

I’m cool with the tuition tax – if Pitt or CMU had to pay property taxes, they would just raise tuition to pay for it anyway. Besides, even with the Pitt Police around, they are usually backed up by City cops if anything goes down in Oakland (Not to mention the Pitt kids that live outside of Oakland).

Whether they are committing crimes, or being protected from crime/fire/or need EMS treatment, Pitt/CMU/Duquesne et al kids do cost the city money.

Now, let’s talk about a commuter wage tax – that’s something Pittsburgh needs as well!

Comment by Patrick 11.11.09 @ 5:49 pm

1) for all of you who bellyache at noon starts, please note that the Rutgers – Louisville game on 11/27 is scheduled to start at 11 am

2) JJ Moore will put Pitt one over the scholarship limit for next year. But note that the PG is reporting of possible eligibility issue for Moore, and he may not be all to sign until next year (which may make sense.)

“Pitt may be able to compete for a final 4 in two seasons and possibly as early as next year.”

Omar, you are assuming that everyone who is around today will be around next year. If Dante Taylor lives up to, or possibly exceeds, his hype, this may not be the case. Likewise with Epps in two years.

Comment by BigGuy 11.11.09 @ 6:52 pm

On the ND show, Weis utters “after we beat Pittsburgh…..”

Comment by Steve 11.11.09 @ 7:08 pm

Dante Taylor and Epps are elite players BigGuy, but no way are they one and done type talents. Maybe 2 and done like Blair, but that was unexpected. The staff fully expected Blair to be back this year. The players that Pitt has recruited will be around for a few years at the very least. Pitt, for better and worse, doesn’t really compete for the one and done type talents like Derrick Rose, John Wall, and Kevin Durant. Taylor is going to be really good, but not as good as those kids right off the bat.

Comment by Omar 11.11.09 @ 7:33 pm

Omar, based on history, I cannot take exception to what you posted.

Maybe the Mayor should have declared Friday “Turn it Red” day in honor of his budget mess.

Comment by John 11.12.09 @ 2:05 am

One quick note on the taxation – if you are a student that does not reside in the city this tax SHOULD BE ILLEGAL – it is taxation without representation. I think the better way about it would be an “occupational” style tax – $52 a person. Period. It is just a shame that this extra money is just going to be added to student debt.

Great recruiting by Dixon – maybe he can help Dave W. get some high-end national talent?
