Not Happening

Pitt-Penn State in the Fiesta or any of the BCS Bowls.

I hate to even waste a post on it. I’ve read the articles laying out how it could happen. So what?

Yes, it would pack the stadium, but that’s only half the equation. It would be little with the TV ratings. It is a regional game of limited interest. Nationally, it would be something like a Florida-Miami game or perhaps Texas-SMU for the nostalgia hounds.

Even in a bye week, this is a complete waste of time.

Speculating on bowl match-ups is silly in October. Speculating on BCS bowl match-ups in October is dumb.

I want the Pitt-PSU game back as much as anyone — as a home-and-home series. My parents are PSU grads, so the return to that fun at family gatherings is something I would dearly love.

I’m also resigned to the fact that the series won’t restart until sometime after the Zombie King is denied his brains on which to feed, has salt poured into his mouth, and has his eyes and mouth stitched shut to put him at rest.

Until then, skip the time waste.

I firmly believe the series will resume when Ol’Pa takes a dirt nap or is too old to remember his name. Too many people want this series back and it will eventually happen.

I would disagree about the tv ratings. I think Pitt – Penn St would generate a lot of interest and even more importantly creates a story line for the national media to play on. Lets face it, very few bowl match ups are really intriguing.

wow this is pricele$$ lol

Yeah…I don’t get the lack of TV interest comments. Let’s be honest. Pitt has limited national interest regardless of the bowl opponent. If anything, a Pitt/Penn State game would give the media something to play off of.

I do agree that the chances of it occurring are pretty small. But, we can dream can’t we?

Comment by mutley 10.29.09 @ 12:49 pm

I also disagree about the tv ratings for this game. Let’s face it: unless it is the title game, every bowl game is of primary interest only to the fans of the two teams playing, and only secondary interest to folks who just like to watch football. No matter who plays in the Fiesta (TCU vs. Oregon, or whomever), most casual fans won’t care.

But, a re-ignition of the Pitt-PSU rivalry? That’s a story. It may be a one day story, but it’s more of a story than, say, Georgia Tech v. Oklahoma State.

Comment by Patrick 10.29.09 @ 2:12 pm

I disagree also, but only to follow everyone else.

Comment by Reed 10.29.09 @ 3:12 pm

I think that may have to
Nat’l Championship: Winner of Florida Alabama va. Texas
Rose: Iowa or whoever wins the Bigh 10 excpet PSU vs. USC
Orange: ACC vs. ?
Sugar Bowl: SEC(loser of FLA ALA) vs. ?(big at-large, possible psu)
Fiesta: ? vs ?

YES

Comment by THE APOSTLES 10.29.09 @ 4:06 pm

I’m only willing to play PSU if we receive 3 home games for every one away game….

fck them I say, PITT doesn’t need them any longer, nor do I care about them anymore. JoPa will either be dead in 10 years or retired and then this will all be a mute point.

The only real issue is that we were deprived of a great rivalery for 15 plus years because of an old ass.

Comment by Marco 10.29.09 @ 4:13 pm

yeah im sure oregon-tcu and gt-boise would be a tremendous tv ratings boost above pitt-pennst cough cough. i live in sec country in auburn, alabama and people are talking about how pitt is a really fun team to watch. whats wrong with speculation anyway. yeah it probably wont happen but theres nothing wrong with talking about it. the most unlikely scenario that has to happen for this to work out is pitt winning the big east so yeah its a possibility

Comment by Tony Cancilla (Huntsville, AL) 10.29.09 @ 4:52 pm

I’m really up-in-the-air about the whole thing. On one hand, our rivalry with West Virginia is a lot of fun and fairly evenly matched so I don’t feel the need to have another one. As I tell all the ‘Nitters, having a rival is what makes college football great and the Land Grant Trophy with MSU just ain’t getting it done.

On the other hand, unless you work on a goat milking farm you likely don’t work with many WVU alum. PSU fans on the other hand are all over many offices in the Pittsburgh region… it would be nice to shut them up once and for all.

The fact that the series is gone is beyond sad and Paterno extracted his revenge long ago-he has been pouring salt in the wound for over 10 years now and just won’t let it go. I, frankly, don’t want to see the bowl game for one simple reason. I want Pitt back to prominence to the point where we get as much or more recognition as Penn State. Then, they will be the ones who would be whining about the series and I then want to see Wanny tell the lions to kiss HIS keister. Now that would be sweet.

Comment by wally 10.29.09 @ 7:46 pm

I just want Pitt to beat Syracuse, then I really, really want them to beat Notre Dame, then I really want them to go to Morgantown and win a tough game. If they can do that, I’ll go from there. Penn State and/or BCS is the furthest thing from my mind.

Hail to Pitt

That’s pretty Effin’ sweet that SEC country is talking about Pitt!

Comment by dugdog 10.29.09 @ 10:02 pm

Holy cow, I didn’t realize that southern football fans could ever acknowledge that anyone in the ACC, Big East, Big 12, NFL, etc etc can play exciting football because none of those guys play ::once again, cue thick southern accent:: ESSS EEEE SEEEE FOOOTBAAWWWWWWWLLL!

Also, I agree that at least a Pitt-Penn State bowl match would give the networks a lot to hype up. I mean, a couple of years ago Wake Forest played Louisville in the Orange Bowl… you don’t think the organizers of that game wouldn’t have rather had Pitt vs. Penn State 291783273192798172189217873 times more?

Comment by Jimbo Covert's My Dad 10.29.09 @ 11:37 pm

I also agree that a Pitt v State Penn matchup would be quite the storyline for the promoters to play with. There are plenty of sporting events every year that I should have no care in the world for, yet find myself intrigued with because of how they’re hyped. Most bowl games outside of the BCS championship game have little meaning or consequence, so I would imagine the heated tension between the two sides of the Pitt/State Penn saga would be pretty fun to play with for a bowl committee.

This is ludicrous to be talking about in the first place, but it makes for good thought.

I will say that it’s beyond embarrassing that Pennsylvania is the only state I can recall with two major football programs not playing each other. It’s so sad. Governors have stepped in on these types of issues in some parts of our great land. Not Pennsylvania though. Thanks Rendell.

I don’t want to start to play PSU again – I would rather Pitt start a rivalry with a real good team , geographics aside. How about OSU? Let’s start taking some of the top PSU and OSU’s recruits out of Ohio. Once Pitt starts hurting PSU where it does the most – in the wallet – then they will come calling.

Comment by Greg 10.30.09 @ 10:30 am

I think most of the better known in-state or georgraphic rivalries that have been maintaind are the result of conference alignment (Fl St/Miami, Mich/Mich St, Mich/Ohio St, Oregon/Oregon St, Miss/Miss St, Auburn/Alabama, USC/UCLA, Texas/Oklahoma, Texas/Texas A&M…etc.). Granted, there are a few that still exist (Fl/Fl St, Georgia/Georgia Tech), but there aren’t many. In the days of independents, such games were much easier to schedule, but contractual obligations in scheduling only allow for a few scant opportunities to schedule OOC opponments. So now, you get a handfull of OOC cupcakes, and one (maybe two) marquee OOC games. I don’t like it, but understand that it’s a necessary evil. College football is a business. And nothing signaled that more than when every independent ran to align with a conference because of the television deals associated with those confernces. The fact that the two teams are in different conferences pretty much precludes any potential meeting.

I never laughed so hard reading the last paragraph of your post!

“I’m also resigned to the fact that the series won’t restart until sometime after the Zombie King is denied his brains on which to feed, has salt poured into his mouth, and has his eyes and mouth stitched shut to put him at rest.”

When I was growing up, my family hardly ever missed seeing that match up in person. If we did, our family would take turns swatting the TV with a wet rat-tailed towel every time they showed ‘ol coke-bottle, flood-wearing, weaping cry-baby joe-pa roaming the sidelines. What great joy that brought to us! We would let out a cheer every time someone was able to leap up, grab the towel and swat the TV before the picture changed…

Hail to Pitt!

To his credit, JoePa did mention Pitt as one of the teams he’d be in favor of joining the Big 10 and he is in favor of expansion of that conference. So he is willing to play Pitt again, just under extreme circumstances.

Comment by Jimbo Covert's my Dad 10.30.09 @ 1:38 pm

yeah i cant stand most sec fans for that reason. auburn fans are still bad about that but they arent as only-sec-minded

Comment by Tony Cancilla (Huntsville, AL) 10.30.09 @ 1:51 pm

Don’t hold your breath waiting for the Pitt ups series to resume after joe pud retires. Thats if you believe the ups AD who was on Sportsbeat several years ago. He told Stan and the viewers that there is no long range plans for Pitt on their schedule. Maybe a game here and there. For some reason I taped that show and still have the tape.

He gave the usual reasons of an extra home game and to satisfy out of town alumns. Same reason why Navy will not join the BE. With their schedule they can become bowl eligible but not if they join thr BE plus ND.
