Not sure how the world can handle this. The conventional wisdom in football is that Coach Wannstedt is at best a mediocre coach. That he is simply the latest in a line of ex-NFL coaches in college that operates in that 5-8 wins per year group (Gailey, Groh, Sherman, Callahan, et. al.).

Now Pitt sits at 7-1. Ranked its highest under Wannstedt (#15 BCS, #16 AP, #17 Coaches). Pitt’s best start since 1982.

So it is time for the paradigm shift. Something many Pitt fans have been working through for the past year or so.

3. Pittsburgh is for real: Yes, it is sometimes tough to give coach Dave Wannstedt a whole lot of credit but he has a team that is legitimately good. The Panthers not only beat South Florida, they absolutely dominated the Bulls. There’s probably a slip-up coming somewhere (Pitt is usually good for one head-scratcher per year), but until that happens the Panthers deserve to be feared.

I think we can agree that the NC State game could and should count as the slip-up game. Here’s hoping it’s the only one.

This is the week of acknowledging what is happening.

We’ve certainly been critical of Dave Wannstedt in the past, but he has it going on at Pittsburgh this season. His Panthers crushed USF 41-10 Saturday to move to 7-1 overall and 4-0 in the Big East. Pitt led 31-7 at halftime Saturday and didn’t punt the whole game.

“They just whooped us and were much better than us” was USF coach Jim Leavitt’s succinct reaction.

If not for a loss to N.C. State in which it blew a 14-point lead, Pitt would be 8-0 and almost certainly in the top 10. (That NCSU has not beaten any other FBS team has to make it doubly frustrating for Pitt.)

Yeah, that’s going to be a bitter thing for a while. I guess it can be used as a reminder to the team not to take anything for granted and the close difference between winning or losing. Or some motivational gimmick. Still just sucks.

So, there is some actual respect going on.

P is for Pitt: The only thing more complete than Dave Wannstedt’s mustache might be his football team. A 41-14 victory over South Florida makes the Panthers 7-1 for the first time since 1982, when Dan Marino quarterbacked Pitt to its last No. 1 ranking.

And respect for Coach Wannstedt.

Lesson 6: We all owe Pitt a big ole apology.

Sorry, we never should’ve doubted the ‘Stache. Dave Wannstadt and his Panthers absolutely dismantled South Florida 41-14 to take over the Big East lead at 4-0. This is the first time since 1982 that Pittsburgh has started 7-1. But I wonder just how hard Pitt is kicking itself for blowing that two-touchdown lead at N.C. State back in September? Damn.

By the way, that Cincinnati-Pittsburgh game on Dec. 5 is gonna rock.

Expect more of this meme during  the next week. What with Pitt on a bye week and Coach Wannstedt being more available for media interviews.

I don’t know if this refelcts on Wannstadt’s coaching or just his recruiting. He did “recruit” Cignetti to come run the offense and seems to trust his play calling. It’s great when they win, but the way they won this game was just beautiful, exicting football.

ND, then WVU, then Cinci. (Not to overlook Cuse, but I am)

This is going to be a fun month for Pitt fans.

I am confident in this next statement. If PITT were to return to No. 4 Iowa right now and replay last years game, we would beat them again. The amount Stanzi has matured in the past year pales in comparison to the amount Stull has. The difference between Iowa this year and last year is they are playing without Shonne Greene.

its good that pitt, wanny, and wanny’s stache are finally earning some praise. go pitt!!

One of those articles makes a great point though- Pitt could finish with ten wins and end up in a well below average bowl game against another conference’s SIXTH best team. There is something very wrong with that (aside from the fact that a non Big East Notre Dame team can steal one of the conference’s games).

Look out guys, the bandwagon is getting a little more crowded than it has been in quite a while. Stull has finally silenced his critics, Shady has become a warm memory and no stones to throw at Wanny after a statement game. Smizik will have nothing to blog about, the talk shows will start showing the love instead of questioning. It’s like bizzaro Pitt Football and I love it. Looks like a great 4 games ahead. Final tune up against the Orange, beat ND again and then a trip to Hooterville, then home for the Chick Fil A team. My Hoopie co-worker is already preparing the excuse…”You know, neither one of us have played anybody to date”.
One other statement. Is that Ohio State ranked below us? Now will everyone get off of the Mustache for not winning the Pryorbowl?
Chas – hope the little man is feeling better.

The CBS article also gives credit to the job Paul Rhodes is doing at ISU.

Forget about the NCS debacle blemishing our record. While looking over your shoulder is just the time when you run into the tree in front of you. One game at a time. Its orange crush time!. Hail to Pitt!

Note that the ND game takes on even bigger significance because of the bowl implications.

one more thing … let’s appreciate the fact that we will be playing 3 (currently) ranked teams to finish the season with the final apparently having a BCS bowl on the line. It certainly won’t be easy … but this is what we could hope for every year.

Comment by wbb 10.26.09 @ 12:13 pm

uh, that headline is a bit much but…i’ll give wanny all the credit in the world for hiring cignetti and more importantly, staying out of his way for the most part.

Wow! Thank goodness kids sports are winding down and I’m getting my Saturdays back. Don’t know if I’m ready to invest too much yet. Gimme a beatdown on ND and I’ll put banners around the house!

IMO, Wannstadt is doing what a good head coach is supposed to do (not necessarily in order of importance)–

1. Hire quality assistant coaches and let them do their jobs within the overall framework of a solid system without micro-managing them.

2. Be a good PR guy with the media.

3. Recruit talented players well personally and seal the deal on recruits, including those primarily being recruited by your assistant coaches. Do this year after year to build and maintain quality depth and a high level of talent on the roster.

Notre Dame is particularly sensitive game for me. Living near Shit Bend for 10 years, I have a bit of a chip on my shoulder listening to Domer honks. Plus, some of the best and worst Pitt losses I have seen live have been against ND. Also, like Beanu Cook, I believe Notre Dame is still very much a relevant program (W & L aside)and you can improve your team’s perception in the National Media by beating them handily.

Some things to consider…

1) ND will likely be ranked when we play making it even more critical (three straight ranked teams, Gator Bowl, eliminate them from BCS discussion)

2) ND will be coming off of a game with Navy when they come to Heinz Field. Hopefully, the speed differential and overall scheme challenges cause the Irish to have a few brain farts. This game is looking more and more winnable each day.

3) Pitt ND game could be a Heisman Trophy showdown (Clausen vs. Dion). Here’s hoping Stull puts of huge numbers and is the better QB on that day!

4) Pitt will continue to get kudos if we continue to win in convincing fashion. If Wanny hangs half a hundred on Chubbie Charlie and rolls to a win, hang on, cause it will get crazy around Pitt country!

Hail to Pitt!

Yeah, i have noticed Wanny seems a bit more flexible lately, More likely to coach to the situation he’s given. Maybe Cignetti is having some influence on him, don’t know. But the last few games Wanny does seem to be learning that the college game is different.

Its nice to see, and it will have to continue if Pitt is to get back to the top. Great win, too.

I hesitate to make this analogy but … in the first half of this decade, PSU had 4 of 5 losing seasons … and the “Joe Must Go” movement was running rampant (although many would deny it now.)

It seems that one of the big things (maybe the biggest thing in fact) was that he relinguished control to his coaches … hired Galen Hall to run the O, and gave much more (and deserved) D control to Tom Bradley. Lastly, despite not doing any active recruiting (no traveling), they are doing very well i that area also.

Many times, the most effective way of managing is letting the subordinates do what they are hired for.

Give DW credit for being an X’s and O’s coach. He was well respected by his peers when he was in the NFL. He got the head NFL jobs via recommendations, not because of a nice smile. The guy is winning, but we’re still hearing, “Yes, but…”
