Pictures and A Winner

I was all set to offer congrats to Wally on getting the exact score of the Pitt win over UConn when I realized he picked UConn to win. Whoops.

Pauly P was close with a 23-20 pick.

The closest picks were within 1 point at 24-20.

Greg and Nick both made that selection. Nick won the coin toss so he gets the t-shirt this week. Congrats.

After the jump, some pics from the game.

I had 24-21 PITT 🙂

Do mental predictions with 3 seconds left in the game count?

I had us shocking the nation by doing a fake on the last play and scoring 6 just to prove a point. The point being that we don’t like game winning field goals. Basically I don’t deserve the t-shirt because I am bad at coaching.

You know, I know next the time Stull throws a bad interception I may take this back but…

Maybe we all expected a little too much last year from a guy who was basically a 1st year starter.

And maybe we all forgot during the off season that Bill Stull might actually improve at his position, as people who practice something often tend to do.

I mean, it does make sense that a 1st year starter (and no, I don’t count practicing and playing a half or whatever against a 1AA team before getting hurt the year before) would make some strides between years one and two, doesn’t it?

Look, he’s still probably not the most talented guy in college football, and he’s not going to be playing on Sundays a year from now, and he still might collapse and be a total failure in the 2nd half of this year (as many seem to be waiting for him to do)…

But you have to admit that it was pretty silly of all of us (myself included) to assume that a guy wouldn’t naturally improve at something between his 1st and 2nd years of doing it.

I don’t know if that Wally character would want a “Baldwin for Heisman” anyway, since he pick UCONN to win.

It was a dislexia moment and it cost me a shirt. Hey, I would take a free shirt if it was pro Pitt and it said “Stull for Heisman” (he keeps playing the way he has, there may be more awards in his future than some of you detractors think possible right now. Hail to Pitt!

until I see concrete eveidence that Stull is not the best option at QB, I will support him no matter what (although I’m not the type to boo anyway.)

Yes, we heard about Tino’s success during the early part of trainig camp, but we also heard from these same sources just how dominant our defense was supposed to be. I don’t mean to downgrade Sunseri; he obviously has promise, but I just can’t see how he could have been better than Stull this season.

off topic but since we have a few days: Maurice Walker, 6-10 center, who reportedly has interest from UConn and Kansas, is high on Pitt (Scout.com) and his only scheduled recruiting visit is Pitt on Oct. 23.

Note that he is a 3-star, and not the immediate impact player like D Taylor is supposed to be. But more interesting to me, he would be the 3rd 2010 recruit although Pitt would have only 2 schollies to give. I assume that either the coaches expect someone, possibly disgruntled with his PT, will transfer or we may see the 2nd version of Cassin Diggs. This is pure speculation but am wondering if the coaches are frustrated with G Brown, not only because of the academic failure, but also, despite his athletic skills, he appeared to be the only Pitt player not to improve last year … again pure speculation.

Maybe you can call me the Smizik of Pitt Blather for prematurely stirring the pot when there probably is no story …. however, for the 2nd time in 2 2 years, tey seem willing to recruit more than their ration of scholarships.

37-17 Panthers

I like that they are recruiting more then they have in scholarships. You never know what is going on behind the scenes, but it sure is nice to have options. Who knows what their scholarship situation is until next year.

And to comment on this booing Stull stuff – it is just a function of the always-negative Pittsburgh fan base.

Keep in mind what this fan base has done to Qbs here:

1. practically ran Bradshaw out of town.
2. Character-assassination of Kordell Stewart.
3. Threw garbage on the lawn of the home of Tommy Gun, not soon after being heralded as the next big thing.
4. Calls into post-game talk shows after a big double digit road win against a current dynasty & rival franchise, calling for the benching of a then Super Bowl winning QB in favor of the backup because the backup “could run the offense better.”

I am sure there are PLENTY more I am missing. The point is the behavior is nothing out of the ordinary, and by comparison not nearly as harsh as expected.

Comment by Greg 10.13.09 @ 8:42 am

Greg, all good points. Note that in the early 70s, Steelers fans actually cheered as Bradshaw lay on the 3 Rivers Stadium carpet, writhing in pain. I don’t believe Pitt fans would ever stoop as low — in fact they didn’t cheer when Stull was hurt in Rutgers game last year … until, of curse, he was being wheeled off.

Comment by wbb 10.13.09 @ 9:48 am

Booing is an immediate emotional response that releases pent up frustrations. Better to boo than go home and take an axe to the wife and kids!

Comment by Dan 72 10.13.09 @ 10:12 am

Regarding the prediction…

I have to admit, with Pitt on the goal-line ready to punch it in at the end , I thought, “KICK THE FG! I MIGHT LOSE MY BALDWIN HEISMAN SHIRT!!”… oh well, I’ll take a Win anyday!

Comment by Pauly P 10.13.09 @ 12:22 pm

Jimbo – there were more than a few PITT fans on here and the message boards stating the case of Stull’s ability to progress between his first and second year. There is nothing like game experience to ready a player for competition.

In that vein I think we’ll see a heavy dose of Pat Bostick in the 2010 training camp, with Sunseri starting off as second string. Of course, the staff will say there is an open competition and it may well be – but in their minds those games Bostick played in 2007 & 2008 will give him an immediate edge.
