Unfrozen Caveman Football

If Coach Dave Wannstedt and NC State coach Tom O’Brien had their druthers, the teams would just line-up the lines and run at each other to see which side could push the other out of the way. That or just beat on each other with clubs.

Pittsburgh will play with a “smash-mouth” attitude in trying to stay unbeaten, a proposition that Coach Tom O’Brien of N.C. State finds most appealing for his improving team.

“It’s going to be a hard-fought, slug-it-out, hit-them-in-the-mouth type of game,” O’Brien said. “This is old-school football. I love it. They’re attacking the line of scrimmage. It’s not this ‘spread the field and play touch football’ stuff.”

O’Brien and Wannstedt don’t plan to exchange pleasantries before the game, so much as grunt and gesture.

Beating Pitt, it’s so easy a cave man can do it!

Just kidding, Pitt 21 NC State 10

It’s so weird, I know JoePa is ‘hip’ and ‘down’ with all with the newfangled gadgets, but why is he posting on a Pitt blog?

Comment by BigEgg 09.22.09 @ 2:59 pm

Dear Pitt,

Take this as a statement game and whoop NC STATE.

Thanks.

Mr. Hynoski, I think you’ve just been called out!

Comment by dugdog 09.22.09 @ 4:47 pm

If that’s how this game is played, we’ll win easily.

Comment by Hollywood 09.22.09 @ 5:37 pm

Sans any gaffes: Pitt-27 NC ST-10…Pitt’s defense pulls the secondary together.

Let’s see some continued solid play from the running game and good decisions at the q’back spot.

Going to NC State game via Richmond Va. Anyone have any idea where to park? Athletic office said no parking passes for Pitt, would like to park near some Pitt fans so we can mooch some IC and hopefully avoid angry Wolfpack fans after game.

In lieu of IC Corona will do.

Thanks

Guys, I think that this may be a closer game than you expect. If State can hold of your good Dline, Russell Wilson may make your secondary pay.

I don’t know if I agree with TOB that this will be a slobberknocker. Wilson will spread it around quite a bit. Should be interesting.

Good luck!

Wolfy, Us Pennsylvanians giveth you Chuck Amato and Trevor Ferguson and taketh nothing. Payback time.

WolfInVolNation, While we have some overly-optimistic fans just like any other school, including yours I’m sure, I believe most of us believe Pitt certainly can win but it won’t be easy. Personally, I am expecting a low scoring game, with 2 conservative offensive gameplans, … but I was expecting a low score 2 weeks ago when Pitt scored 54 points at Buffao, so what do I know.

Comment by wbb 09.22.09 @ 8:35 pm

By the way, NC State’s QB, Wilson was recruited by former Wolfpack assistant, Curt Cignetti (Frank’s brother)

Comment by wbb 09.22.09 @ 8:39 pm

steve, we also gave them Herb Sendek and Ben McCauley (both Pgh area natives) not to mention a former Wolfpack player with a big jaw who returned to his hometown pro foorball team.

Comment by wbb 09.22.09 @ 8:44 pm

I guess that I am really mixed on what to expect.

We were unprepared against a middlin S Carolina team and played uninspired. Two victories over FCS teams give no direction either. Top it off with a rash of H1N1 cases and other injuries… who knows?

No excuses though… I am hoping for a good game and a Wolfpack victory over a BE favorite. So I bid you welcome to south of the Mason-Dixon my yankee friends. Try some Carolina BBQ, spend some money, and hopefully leave disappointed.

I miss Chuck Amato’s sunglasses…

My 33 years of experience as a Pitt fan tell me to expect this game to be anything but easy. My heart tells me they can win, but my mind says, “Expect them to blow this one too.”

Is anyone else afraid to believe 2009 can be the year we win all the games we should, and maybe win one we shouldn’t? I’m just too scared to believe, I’ve been hurt too many times.

Heart pick – 24-13 Pitt
Head pick – 17-10 NCS

Comment by ME2001 09.22.09 @ 9:18 pm

Max Gruder is a Charlotte native, so that’s one “taketh” from the great state of North Carolina.

wondering about the humidity. When I got home after the Pitt game, I turned on the WVU-Auburn game with the Eers leading 21 – 10, and I swore that the WVU looked exausted in the middle of the 2nd quarter. Auburn went on to score next 10 points before half. They did looked a bit refreshed in the 3rd quarter .. but then, there was the 4th quarter meltodown.

Checking the weather, as of now, it’s supposed to be more nice in Raleigh than Pittsburgh Saturday.

Comment by dugdog 09.22.09 @ 9:37 pm

An excerpt just posted on PSI which doesn’t surprise me because Burns was also a pretty good safety at Wilmington High:

Interesting development at Pitt practice this afternoon as a highly recruited player is switched from offense to defense. Chris Burns, a 4-star recruit in 2008, was switched from running back to the defensive backfield. Burns is being switched to either a cornerback or safety. The 5-11, 195 redshirt freshman was in the running for PItt’s starting running back position entering camp. He’s currently 4th on Pitt’s depth chart behind Dion Lewis, Raymond Graham and Shariff Harris.

I’m guessing that Dave Wannstedt and his staff are thinking that since Lewis and Graham are both freshman, they don’t want to waste Burns talent. He’s more likely to get on the field as a defensive back than as a running back.

Burns (New Wilmington, PA) was rated the 11th best prospect in the state and ranked by Rivals.com as the 15th best running back in the country.

Comment by wbb 09.22.09 @ 10:44 pm

I’m actually kind of astonished Burns isn’t the starter this season after Shady departed. He was highly recruited as a running back by several schools. But, at least he might be getting on the field now.

Comment by dugdog 09.23.09 @ 12:53 am

Didn’t see the game but scoring only 3 points vs S. Carolina isn’t impressive. If we get Lewis loose early and Stull stays pretty confident, I think we take care of business…could be close in first half, but Pitt seems to have more playmakers…perhaps more than any team they play this year. Then again, remember the Sun Bowl!

Comment by Matt N. 09.23.09 @ 10:12 am

I agree with WBB on a low scoring game. Wanny’s head is still in the NFL.

What does that say about Pitt’s recruiting when Chris Burns a 3-4* recruit has to switch positios to see playing time.

Pitt in a close game will [may] have trouble with FGs and controlling their QB. If they do both it sets up for a very good season.

Comment by joel 09.23.09 @ 2:59 pm

About the weather, Raleigh is nowhere near as humid as Auburn – trust me – and Auburn isn’t that bad, particularly for the FL boys on our Dline. It will be fall temps up there.

One of the keys to TCU’s success is taking RBs not good enough to play at UT or OU and molding them into solid players at other positions [I believe even the infamous Tommy Blake went this route]. It’s a great strategy when you can’t have your pick of 4/5* recruits. Here’s hoping Burns becomes one hell of a safety…

OK. One more time – this lesson for the rebs (I say ‘rebs’, not ‘Rebs’ because i live in Mississippi and I know what ‘Rebs’ are) – The only Yankee school in the Big East are UCONN. Yankee refers to people from New England (Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Rhode island, Massachussetts (sp?), Connecticut). They are called the Yankee States. I grew up in Western New York and can tell you New Yorkers do not consider themselves Yankees. Neither do Pennsylvanians or New Jerseyans. However, the term Yankee does commonly get basterdized the further away you get. Accross the big pond in England, the Limies call all Americans ‘Yankees’. You are a Yankee even if you are from West Virginia, Mississippi, Alabama, Tenn, GA or the Carolinas, whatever. All are Yankees by the overseas definition. So please lets understand and agree on the American meaning of the term ‘Yankee’. Yankees are from New England states. (that’s period). If you disagree then you fall back to the UK definition and are a Yankee even if you are a southern ‘Redneck’ (Technically, we call ’em, Hillbillies if they come from the mountains, and Rednecks if they are flatlanders, but that’s another story).

IronMan,

How about the term “hill-jacks”???
