New Unis. Moving On

Okay, so I’ve seen the new uniforms. Eh. Can’t say I have strong feelings one way or the other. They aren’t radically different, and that’s probably a good thing, since anything like that would probably make my eyeballs bleed. Unless they went back to the old colors — which we all know is not going to be happening.

They are a bit bland and strike me as generic Nike unis, but that’s about the extent of my negative feelings.

Does this mean we’re free of “Vegas Gold?” Please?

I can’t say either way. It looks like channel 4 took those photos with a cell phone.

The new Unis are LAME … I guess the helmet will have to clarify that we are: PITT

The new uni’s are nice. Look similar to what we wore in Tony Dorsett’s and Marino’s day. Switching to Nike is a huge plus though. They look better and recruits like that.

I’m sorry but I just have to ask, what is the athletic department’s aversion toward the Pitt script? Is there something wrong with it?

Comment by Dave 08.11.09 @ 8:51 am

The reason why I’m asking is because anytime someone brings up the topic of returning to the old script, someone makes a wisecrack or “That’s not going to happen” comment. Why? Why such pessimism and negativity? What is the real underlying reason behind the athletic department’s decision to ignore the old script?

Comment by Dave 08.11.09 @ 8:54 am

Can we not see a picture of a helmet? Is that too much to ask? Why would the PITT AD not have a million pictures of these things available on the website or somewhere???

Is it just me, or are we debating Pitt’s new uniforms or symbol almost every year? Why can’t they pick something the fans like and stick with it? Has anyone seen Penn State’s new uniforms?

It’s annoying.

Well, there is a huge group of Pitt fans who will never stop complaining until the old script is back, and for good reason. Don’t get me wrong, I think the new-age Panther is a great logo and should definitely be used, but can it compliment the Pitt script? When the script first came out, it was unique and it symbolized Pitt football. It also represents the era of Dorsett, Marnio, Green, Fralic, among many others as well as the golden age of Western Pennsylvania football. When Wanny came back and they announced the new logo, I was so sure that they would bring back the script; I was totally taken aback when they unveiled the block Pitt. What is the athletic department trying to hide? Are they ashamed of the script? When Palko and Blades played in the Senior Bowl with the script helmets a few years ago, I took it as a statement by those two to bring back the script. I think that the script would look great with the present blue/gold color scheme.

This version of the Pitt uniform post script era are by far the best. It is not even close IMO. No shadow lettering; a clean classic look and a better flat gold color. Stripes on the pants look great (though I’d love to see all versions of colors). Stripes on the helmet are ideal. I think they are finally realizing that less is certainly more and the clean look produces more revenue for the Dept. I agree there should be previously taken photos of the unis so that we can see them better. I’d love the script back, but these uniforms are certainly better than anything we’ve seen in the past 12 years. HTP and well done designers.

It’s my understanding that Pitt actually doesn’t own the rights to the script logo, but rather, it belongs to a third party.

What bullshit. Is Pederson just trying to piss us all off, changing to some tacky, boring uni every other year while we scream for script? Go to hell, Pederson, you have taken one of the best uniforms in college sports and turned it into something that looks like it belongs in Conference USA. Of course, it now has a Nike swoosh, and we all know what that means. Not only were they made by children in sweatshops, but they (apparently) attract recruits(?). Seriously though, I will overlook this uniform nonsense if we can win 10+ games year:)

I don’t know if a 3rd party owns script or not. Only thing I know is that during Pederson’s first term he abandoned script because it represented “losing”. To me, it represented the 75-80 teams, the last time Pitt won the NC. Looked snazzy, too.

With all the work Pederson put in to try to market Pitt last year, even asking for ideas from season ticket holders, I would think he would try to appeal to the fans in this way, too, by going back to (perhaps a slightly updated form of) script. Maybe script fonts scare his momma.

OTOH, maybe that’s why nobody’s seen the helmets yet. Maybe they’ll be script!!!!

Fat chance!!!
