Is a Twitter post that is deleted more credible or means something is likely to happen more than a mention on a sports radio show?
You may recall last summer that the Georgia Tech AD Dan Radackovich said that GT was nearing a deal for a home-and-home with Pitt. Pitt’s AD denied, and nothing has come of it.
This time Block U noted a tweet from Utah’s Assistant Athletics Director of Corporate Sales and Ticket Operations, Zack Lassiter (Who’s picture is a huge disappointment for someone named Zack Lassiter.) saying that Utah was close to having Pitt come to Salt Lake City in 2010.
The tweet has since been deleted, and there is no other word. It might be a case where it got leaked before the parties had finished a contract or were ready to release.
Or it could simply be way too soon and merely teams still talking and not even close to an agreement.
UPDATE (4:40): And just like that I’m smacked upside the head by the Pitt athletic department. Here’s the announcement on Utah.
Pitt and Utah have agreed to a home-and-home football series beginning with the 2010 season, University of Pittsburgh athletic director Steve Pederson announced.
Pitt will play at Utah on Sept. 11, 2010. The Panthers will host the Utes the following season on Oct. 15, 2011.
The 2010 encounter will mark the first-ever regular-season game between the two schools.
Happy to be shown up.
“What’s a ‘Ute’?”
Wait, what’s that? They smacked the hell out of ‘bama in the Sugar Bowl last year….. fuck!!
basketball: we lost 1st round NCAA to Pacific, lost in OT to Ok St, and beat Wash in Pullman 2 years ago
football: we lost Fiesta bowl, split 2 Insight bowls and, of course, lost Sun Bowl. We also beat T A&M in College Station back in 03 (as any Pitt fan residing in Houston should have remembered)
We also lost to Michigan State in the 2008 NCAA tourney in Denver, lost at Oklahoma State, lost to UCLA in San Jose in the Sweet 16, lost to Marquette in Minneapolis in the Sweet 16
Football lost at Nebraska
We went to the Fiesta Bowl, and every time someone said “Let’s go Utes!” we would turn and say, exaggeratedly slowly “Yoouuuthhs.” Classic.
So much is made about having a flawless record at the end of the year. This often leads to boring subpar matchups or, in our case, sometimes embarrassing season openers. I feel Pitt really needs to start from the ground up. Our scheduling is being pursued from the wrong angle. Rather than create a schedule that minimizes losses in hopes of a New Years Day bowl, why not schedule New Years Day in October with an exciting ‘off the beaten path’ opponent?
Does anybody else feel Pitt needs to take scheduling into their own hands; ‘thinking outside the box’ in terms of trying to sign ink with some Pac-10/WAC/Mountain West teams? I’ve long admired Fresno State’s ‘anyone…anywhere’ attitude in hopes of gaining exposure. It’s worked too. They went toe to toe with a darn good USC team in 2005 during prime time national broadcast.
The East Coast contracts Pitt has been trying to gain are necessary, but often leave less to be desired. UVA…wow, I can hardly contain my excitement. There’s so much tension between the BigEast and the ACC, that it’s almost a wash. Look at Clemson opting out of their end of the bargain. When Georgia scheduled a home-home with ASU, it grabbed national attention for no other reason than it being out of the norm; taboo even.
I realize travel takes a toll and.and.and, but I’m curious if anyone else has shared this notion of ‘thinking outside the box.’ Let’s face it, we just discussed the ineptitude of the BigEast when it comes to looking after the football side of things. It’s time for Pitt to make some drastic steps towards being sustainably effecient.
We would all love a Michigan/USC/Ohio St/Oklahoma matchup, but what others?
Dream matchups-?
Legitimate matchups-?
Thoughts anyone?
And I know you all want to see Corso put on a Pitt Panther head just as much as I do!
