Standing in Comfort

Filed under: Basketball,Coaches,Dixon,Marketing — Chas @ 9:11 am

If you are following my Twitter, then you already know that the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) picked up a new sponsor for insoles and socks.

What made me take notice of the absurd press release was the quote from a coach.

“The care, comfort and health of our feet are concerns for coaches and players in all sports, but especially basketball,” said Jamie Dixon, head coach at the University of Pittsburgh. “We need to be proactive in the care and prevention of foot injuries to our players. At the same time, coaches are on their feet for long periods during practices and games and want to be as comfortable as possible.”

I’m just going to assume that when SofSole was preparing the press release they drafted this and then went to the NABC to have them select a coach to credit the quote. Clearly Coach Dixon got the short straw.

Not to sound like a complete dork but I worked at a shoe store for 4 years and Dixon has a point. When you play basketball, you can land with about 7x the force of your body weight on your feet. If your feet aren’t properly supported and cushioned, that leads to serious knee, ankle, and foot problems–Sam Young times 20. Anybody that’s bought a running shoe that was poor for their foot feels it within a week in terms of bad knee and ankle pain.

The panthers have had a plethora of podiatry problems, e.g. Fields, Brown, etc. Its about time that this problem gets a little attention instead of being ridiculed.

change of subject, ol recruiting, we lost 2 “locks” ricketts and the Pitt tennis coach’s son, has Wanny lost his magic? If there is one area we need to recruit well it is on the lines, what is going on? we are losing them to St Penn.

Kurt–The topic has been beaten to death in the recruiting concerns blog below as well as on the other two pitt chat boards. There isn’t anything left to say and there isn’t anything any fan can do about it anyway. Time to move on.

@Shady4Prez:

Classic line = “plethora of podiatry problems”

I’m gonna have to work that into a conversation or two this week! Thanks!
