Okay, now it is the U-19 squad, not the U-21 team that was originally indicated. Coach Jamie Dixon needs to make sure his passport is in order.

Pitt’s Jamie Dixon will replace Davidson’s Bob McKillop as the head coach of the U.S. men’s U-19 team at the FIBA World Championships in Auckland, New Zealand. Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim, who is the chair of the junior national team selection process, confirmed that Dixon will replace McKillop, who withdrew last week after junior Stephen Curry decided to declare and stay in the draft.

Dixon was already chosen to be an assistant under McKillop. So, too, was Southern Illinois’ Chris Lowery. The championships will be held July 2-12 and the U.S. is in a group with Egypt, France and Iran and will open with the Iranians in the 16-team competition. Some of the top freshmen and possibly sophomores in college are expected to be invited to the trials, which will be held in Colorado Springs in mid-June. A year ago, McKillop led the U.S. to the silver medal in Argentina. Dixon said he met with McKillop at the Final Four and they discussed the team at length, but then at the end of the talk McKillop told him he might coach the team.

Dixon said he had been looking forward to getting involved with USA Basketball. This trip piqued his interest since he played professionally in New Zealand for two years after a brief stint in the CBA following his college career at TCU. Dixon said he can’t wait to get back to New Zealand, a country he called one of the most beautiful on earth.

Not sure if he can get to Australia to check on some possible recruits there.

The US’s first game will be against Iran on July 2. Just eyeballing the groupings, USA is in Group B, with Egypt, Iran and France. France would obviously the toughest oppenent in the group.

I agree…unless Hamed Haddadi is somehow under 19.

Is anyone else bothered by the fact that Jamie Dixon is a replacement for Bob McKillop? Is that really the pecking order for…anything in the world? I guess everybody starts somewhere, and this is JD’s spot in USA Basketball.

Joe Paterno want the Big 10 to add a team and mentions Pitt, Syracuse, and Rutgers. Pitt and Rutgers would never leave the Big East hoops. Rutgers would be interested though.

all Joe has to do is get PITT into the Big Ten and he will be happy.

Rutgers may be a priority because of its NYC proximity — B10 would love to have both Chicago and NYC as prime TV markets

Holy Crap,

What a tremendous chance for somebody to showcase his Photoshop skills with Jamie in a pic with Flight of the Conchords.

Hugh news!! Paterno finally admitted it! Penn State made a mistake going to the Big Ten. He said today that they need to expand to 12 teams and Pitt is one he recommended (along with Syracuse or Rutgers). BUT, read between the lines. HE FINALLY GETS IT. There has to be exposure in the East. He has known all along that the grudge he has been carrying hurts even his own team and now, before the grim reaper shows up at his door, he finally bares his soul – no surprise as age does that to most people. But let’s hope this gets legs and starts the movement for Pitt to the Big Ten. I, for one, can live with the slightly less visible basketball to get football back to the big time. The Big East structure is not sustainable anyway, too many power teams in one conference. It will change anyway, why not get in on the front end.

Please no. Basketball will suffer and football probably won’t do any better with the increase in competition.

whether it’s Pitt, SU or RU, BE football could be in real trouble if anyone defects. They need 8 teams to maintain BCS status and getting pressure from MWC as it is. Further, with the new 12 game format, the BE ADs are struggling as it is since they have to find 5 non-conference games each year. I’m sure that, behind the scenes, they are trying to get ND to commit (which will likely not ever happen) or the BC to return (which may have a better chance but still not likely due to fiscal reasons.)

I doubt Syracuse would leave for the Big Ten, they are and always have been solidly behind the Big East Conference. If Rutgers were to leave, Memphis would be added in a heartbeat and life would go on in football, and basketball would be even tougher. I know Calipari left, but I think Pastner is going to keep them going, at least as long as they are in C-USA.

Otherwise, I would see what it would take and if Villanova was interested in moving up to the big time in football.

Syracuse would leave in a second…they already tried once when the ACC expanded but were rejected by the ACC Presidents (that’s part of how VT got into the ACC)…There is another way to ready Paterno’s comments…perhaps he will get fed up with being “snikered” at and move PSU to the BE. If that happened, perhaps ND might figure the time is right to join a conference (not likely) and now you have a very stron 10 team conference. Even with just PSU, the BE would be a very competitive conference.

Paterno would get an ego boost if pitt moved to the Big 10. That would be Pitt saying that they were wrong by moving to the big east. But it will never happen, not with the way basketball is going conference wide.
