And you just know it is burning Coach Dixon’s pocket. That will feed the speculation.

Honestly, and this is a pipe dream, the fantasy case would be to somehow get the likely one-and-done point guard John Wall. Give Pitt a top PG for a year before Isiah Epps gets here and then still have a scholarship available for the next year. That, of course, won’t happen. Wall is likely going to Baylor, Kentucky or even UNC — who is coming in late now that it looks like Lawson will enter the draft. Still, fun to think about.

I’ve already indicated that I would probably prefer Pitt to use it for the 2010 class. And not use it for the short-term fix of JUCO big man Will Coleman — who has been very quiet since Calipari left and Josh Pastner was hired at Memphis. There’s no real news on that front. The fact that he hasn’t said anything gives the presumption that he is still planning on going to Memphis.

I understand the impulse to do it and fill the immediate need. I just worry about chemistry and limiting the number of JUCOs on the team at any one time. To say nothing of saving that scholarship to possibly add another player.

The other big man, Pitt might be interested in getting, Kyryl Natyazhko. Well he might be going to Arizona with Sean Miller. He had Xavier and Arizona State as his leading teams last week. His coach seems to see it as possible.

I suppose Pitt might still pursue guard Tom Droney for next year. Though, even he doubts it.

Since last fall, Droney had said Pitt, Notre Dame and Davidson were his finalists. All had offered scholarships at one time, but Droney said said he is going to look at some other schools. It’s questionable how much Pitt wants him now. Droney said Pitt won’t have a scholarship for him unless DeJuan Blair turns pro. “Even then, I’m not sure they would offer it to me,” Droney said.

Kentucky is now interested in him — at the moment.

He probably is not a great fit for Pitt, and Epps is the better prospect.

Chase,
Could you post this video. It’s great.

we need a center, if we could land Coleman, who by all regards is just a freak athletically, we should do it. We will find a scholarship for 2010 if a player wants to commit.

Dokish doesn’t see Coleman or anybody else of value joining the team this year. Looks like we will go with what we have.

I understand Coleman is a JUCO but doesn’t he have 3 years left not 2? That’s not really a quick fix that’s pretty long term. We did recruit a lot of big men this season though, still, hate to see a scholarship sit unused especially cause I’m sure pitt will put it in my tuition either way.

Coleman has only two years left. It’s Dodson that has three.

Hmmm…I was all for getting Coleman, but that was when I thought he still had 3 years of eligibility remaining. 2 years left is a risk, since next year is probably a regroup year anyway. I tried to google for the info on Coleman, and it seems half the articles say 3 years, half say 2 years, but I get the impression it’s only 2.

Coleman is supposedly great friends with Darnell Dodson anyway, so I wouldn’t be surprised if they both just decided to say “the hell with it” and just go to Memphis. Just think if those two could have come to Pitt…which they likely would have if it weren’t for that stupid Big East ineligibility rule. Taylor, Dodson, Coleman, Epps….Yowza!

while were playing the what if game, what do people think this season would’ve shaped up like if the NCAA would’ve given cook eligibility and he returned to normal? It sure would’ve been nice to have another scoring option in the tourney.

But that would have made Young a four and he was clearly meant to be a three. And the rebounding wouldn’t have been as good. I think it would have been a different team, but I don’t think it would be a more successful team. Maybe as successful.

Flynn, Harris and Devendorf of SU all declare for the draft. Don’t think they hired agents.

Here is the original post on PSI dated 3/31 about Coleman which started all of the speculation …. note that he has 3 years eligibility:

It seems if Cal takes the UK job the players that committed at Memphis will be released from their commitment, only some will be able to follow Calipari to UK. The odd man out looks to be JUCU Power Forward Will Coleman who picked and signed with Memphis over Pitt in August. Pitt was is only other offer. He played one year at Miami Dade County College and would have 3 years remaining. He is 6″9, 230. Here are some more tidbits about him:

Miami Dade coach Matt Eisele:
“There is not a big in the country that runs the floor how he does. And there is not a big in the country that is as athletic as he is, either. He’s an absolute freak.”

Coleman, a 6-foot-9 post, is one of the most explosive power forwards in the junior college ranks. Averaged 16/16 last season

Flynn is the only NBA player that has declared from SU … as a Pitt fan, I hope Harris and Devendorf returns …. although in fairness, Devendorf did play well in BET but returned to form against Oklahoma when he kept shooting and missing

Comment by w bill 04.10.09 @ 8:20 am

PSI was wrong. He doesn’t have three. He has two. It doesn’t take much research to see that he played two seasons already.
