So, let me get this straight. The coach who ended up being trashed repeatedly in no small part because he had to follow Phil Jackson in Chicago without Michael Jordan and a completely barren rebuilding team, is going to head to Arizona to follow Lute Olson and a completely barren and rebuilding team? Really? Did someone erase this guy’s memory of how well that worked last time?

Tim Floyd is a moron, so I guess I shouldn’t be surprised if he does take the Arizona job. It’s not a done deal, yet. He’s mulling, apparently. The speculative reasons as to why he wants to go somewhere for at least slightly better money is that there is actual caring about the basketball program by the fans. The other is that he knows some bad crap is about to come down the pike from the O.J. Mayo stuff last year.

I don’t know, but that will re-fuel the Jamie Dixon to USC stuff.

Matt “Money” Smith during Lakers Line on AM 570 KLAC said Ben Howland protege and current Pittsburgh head coach Jamie Dixon is rumored to replace Floyd.

Dixon, with family in LA and such, will be a popular name tossed. Of course, the Trojans tried to get him to bite a few years back and he completely rebuffed them.

Still, as I cautioned, this sort of rumor stuff will be going for a bit. In fact, if Floyd does leave expect the intensity and rumors to really hit the fan. Why? All coaches and athletic directors will be in Detroit for the next several days for the Final Four.

That will mean breathless reports of clandestine meetings. Unsubstantiated rumors, sightings and pairings.

I’ll coach USC. It can’t be very hard to live in LA, walk around campus with tons of hot girls, and coach a team that no one cares about.

The USC job get Jamie to California and maybe more money but is not a step up form Pitt. Pitt is a better program than USC. I can’t see USC ever seriously competing with UCLA for recuits for the spotlight in Los Angeles. The other thing to consider is that Jamie has been at Pitt for a long time so he probably likes it here. Frankly, I really hope that Jame doesn’t leave because I don’t think Pitt would ever step up and pay top dollar to get a coach that is better than Jamie.

USC is fourth in basketball fan interest for residents of Southern California. The Lakers, UCLA, the Lakers and USC. Fifth is the Clippers.

I thought Dixon wasn’t too keen on competing directly with Howland. I mean he wouldn’t even play UCLA in an out of conference game. How does he feel about potentially becoming his cross-town rival? Hopefully we do whatever we need to do to keep him and hopefully he isn’t that interested in So Cal.

Joey D – Nobody walks in LA

Your right TJ I think they don’t like playing each other because they don’t really get very excited about competing. Imagine having to compete for recruits, league titles, and several games a year. I see that as being a big thing keeping him from the job. Also, going out West Dixon will have a hard time getting the type of players he likes. Defensive, tough kids, who he can develop are much more easily found on the East coast. kids around USC want to play, star, and move to the NBA, they aren’t interested in development and tough defense. I know this a big generalization, but it seems to be true. The tough banging, physical style doesn’t seem to fit with the Pac-10 to well.

I was watching ESPN last night and the rumor mill was heavily churning.

They were saying expect Floyd to go to Arizona… then expect Dixon to take the job at USC.. which means Miller will go to Pitt and…

blah blah blah, etc

i really see no reason for dixon to take the usc job unless they throw a ton of money his way. like people have said, usc is not a step up from pitt.

as far as the arizona job, i still think people treat that program like its top tier. without olson its a second tier program at best.

USC would be a great fit for Kelvin Samson. He has winning teams and being at USC would mean that he could violate NCAA rules as much as he wanted and nothing would ever happen.

$1.3 million in Pgh is like how much in LA?

There is one reason for Dixon to go to USC, and unfortunately for Pitt it is a big one with no price tag … of course, I’m talking about family. Thus far, it does not seem to be amjor factor but can nver be discounted.

Andy Katz, who is close to Dixon, has the following on his ESPN blog:

The one job that may pique Jamie Dixon’s interest to come West is USC, even if it meant going against his good friend, UCLA’s Ben Howland. Dixon is very comfortable at Pitt, has a more passionate fan base, loves his athletic director and president, and his family enjoys the city. But USC would put him in the L.A. area near his parents and sister, and his wife would be going back to her alma mater. The money would have to be a major upgrade for him to move, but at least it would make him pause. I’m not sure he would do it since he’s in quite a groove at Pitt. He’s comfortable on the East Coast, and as he said he “summered” in the Bronx with his grandparents. But if he ever did make a move like this, then Xavier’s Sean Miller, a Pitt alumnus, would be the logical choice if the Panthers went outside the current staff.

would hate to see Dixon go but Sean Miller would soften the blow, and may finally bring in someone that will stay until retirement

Good point W Bill…1.3mm goes a hell of a lot further in the ‘Burgh than two or three times as much in LaLaland. I know we all love Sean Miller, but I would absolutely hate to lose Dixon especially now.

I think it’s more than 1.3 million. It was 1.3 million in 2007, but according to Dokish there was an extension six months ago that moved it to around 1.5 million. And, he said, there is a big buyout. I’m liking what I’m hearing. Sounds like USC will have to pay a fortune to get him and Floyd was only making 850k. Doesn’t sound like they have it in them.
