Should Pitt Pursue Another Big?

Quick answer: NO.

The departure of Calipari fromo Memphis, raises a host of questions about his recruits (and something of a potential feeding frenzy for those that don’t follow him to Kentucky). For Pitt, the speculation seems to be about a JUCO big man, Will Coleman. Pitt had previously pursued Coleman.

First, all of the Memphis recruits have an addendum to their LOIs that allow them out if Calipari isn’t there. So, Coleman has choices.

The question, though, is whether Pitt should pursue Coleman? And if not Coleman, there is this other kid in Florida — Kyryl Natyazkho.

The reason, of course, is that DeJuan Blair is likely going pro. That would free-up one more scholarship. And of course there is this looming gaping hole at the 5 spot.

My feeling is that Pitt really should not bother with Natyazkho and I’m not that interested in Coleman. Part of it is that a JUCO is always unpredictable in how they translate to NCAA. That makes it a riskier gamble.

As for the larger picture, Pitt has plenty of guys coming in that are centers or can play the spot. They may not have the height, but Talib Zanna and J.J. Richardson are PF-Cs. And even Dwight Miller, who is redshirting.

Then there is this. Pitt only has one scholarship for 2010. Only Jermaine Dixon will be a senior. This, after coming off an Elite 8 run and a season in the top-5. That one scholarship is going to PG Isiah Epps. I think it would be best to hold any extra scholarships that open up for Pitt for 2010 and someone else.

I agree. If all Pitt has is one scholarship; they should swing for the fences with it. Forget the JUCOs.

Comment by Pittastic 04.01.09 @ 1:24 pm

Chas,
I agree with the belief that Pitt should save a scholarship for 2010, especially considering that they are bringing in mostly big men in this next class and are lacking an elite SG in recent classes. Also, Pitt is involved with some other elite prospects in the 2010 class including: Will Barton, Doron Lamb, Adrien Payne, and others. However, I think the lone exception would be if Gary McGhee were to leave. Now I don’t believe on making players leave and removing scholarships. However, if the coaches spoke with Gary and said look we don’t see you getting anything but spot time here over the next two years, whereas if you went to a smaller school you would probably be a starter and big contributor. It’s your decision but we are just letting you know that with the young players coming we see this happen. If Gary decided to leave, then I believe they absolutely should go after Natyazhako. He seems to be a very good offensive player and this team is going to need some offensive threats.

Man, I gotta feel for the Memphis fans. Their team has been stellar for the past few seasons and this looked like perhaps the best recruiting class in the history of college basketball. 3 of the top 5 or 6 recruits? Heck, we were THRILLED when we were getting Darnell Dodson…and he doesn’t even get mentioned when all the national experts are talking about the incredible recruiting class.

To go from that…to having basically no team at all…well, that’s gotta be painful to say the least. Much like we would be hurting if Dante Taylor were to reneg if Dixon left. After FINALLY landing an All-American…that would be such a kick in the nuts.

I see on Scout.com that Taylor has not signed a LOI. What’s up with that?

Comment by The Hagen 04.01.09 @ 2:01 pm

Taylor is signed, I’m pretty sure of that.

Comment by TJ 04.01.09 @ 2:25 pm

Taylor has definitely signed. Stop listening to Scout.com.

As for Coleman, he would not be your normal Pitt juco. He is the No.2 juco in the country and was good enough for Memphis. They would be crazy not to go after them and it’s looking like they will.

Comment by Mark 04.01.09 @ 2:26 pm

Dokish thinks we will pursue Coleman if he opts out.

Comment by dan 04.01.09 @ 2:27 pm

I don’t know if this is been posted before but this is great.
Not only is Pitt gaining popularity in this country but internationally as well, check it out, pretty good stuff

Take the recruits when you can, and then worry about spots for them later. If Coleman wants to come in and play right away on a Top 25 team, then Pitt is a great place for him.

The rebounding would only slip slightly next year with Brown/Taylor/Coleman in the frontcourt, and the defense would actually be improved I think. Would it make up for less offense? Probably not, but remember, the Big East is going to be a bit down next year compared to this year.

If they can get Coleman to replace Blair, I think they’ll easily maintain the 20 win/10 BE win streak, along with their 9th consecutive NCAA Tourney appearance.

I’m not so high on Kyryl, though, mostly because it would be 4 freshmen bigs. I also don’t think he ultimately will have enough athletic ability to play in the Big East.

Free rivals video saying of all those players at the McD’s game Taylor is one of the 5 players who has really raised his stock and should get a boost in the rankings. Not that it matters at this point but it’s great to see him standing out against the best of the best.

I have to agree with Ontario. McGee is never going to amount to much of anything, and it would be ideal if he were to transfer and open up some space for a big man with real potential.

Comment by Carmen 04.01.09 @ 3:16 pm

Coleman apparently has a 40+ inch vertical at 6’9″, was a state champ in 100m and 200m and that is enough to sell Pitt I think. After reading about him I think they’d be crazy not to get after him. Good video of him jumping over a guy and dunking.

I would normally agree with Chaz that we have enough big men coming in and no need to use another scholarship.

However, if Blair leaves, this will be the 1st time in a long while that we won’t have any returning big man with game experience. Thus, getting a top JUCO who is mature and should be able to adapt to college game than a natural freshman may be acceptable this year … especially when there appears to be much talent at the 1, 2 & 3 positions in addition to Taylor’s potential.

Comment by w bill 04.01.09 @ 4:17 pm

Chas has a great point. There is no right or wrong answer. However, if Blair were to leave then I think you need another big. Coleman is a little bit older. Remember, the kids coming in are all very young and it will be tough for them to bang with older and more experienced players. Not every player is going to be DeJaun Blair and be able to intimidate physically as a freshman. If Blair leaves, then you grab Coleman. When you start recruiting at this level there is going to be natural attrition. Players will realize pretty quickly that they aren’t going to get the minutes they want and will find a better situation. Even players that wouldn’t necessarily be pushed out will want to leave so they can play. If Pitt can land another elite player in the 2010 class, then I guarantee that they will find a scholarship. I say go for it. He will only have three years of eligibility and might be a great get this late in the recruiting season.

Comment by omar 04.01.09 @ 5:17 pm

I just read Dokish’s blog thing and he said Pitt may go after Coleman even if Blair does come back. I assume that would mean they would tell McGhee that his services are no longer needed.

Comment by Mark 04.01.09 @ 5:26 pm

IMO Pitt should use the scholarship for either player right now if possible. It’s hard to find talented big men so you have to take them when you can. there will be other ways to free up a scholarship or two in 2010 if one of the elite players wants to come to Pitt.

Comment by GepDawg 04.01.09 @ 5:35 pm

I agree that McGhee should look elsewhere. The only time he came in was when Blair was in foul trouble and he always looked stiff and a bit lost on the court. In the tournament we remember that pass to him he just fumbled out of bounds and was immediately pulled. It is becoming clear that despite the fact he was a 91 coming in and expected to contribute, he just doesn’t seem to have what it will take to compete at the top. If Pitt wants to stay on top we might need to make hard decisions which is rough but still it could work out for both parties.

Comment by Matthew 04.01.09 @ 5:43 pm

Right after I posted that I left David Lawrence and walked down 5th avenue and Gary McGhee walked right past me. Thought I’d let everyone know despite our conjecturing he is indeed still here.

Comment by Matthew 04.01.09 @ 6:18 pm

Mark or dan could you post the link to that Dokish report?

Comment by Nick 04.01.09 @ 6:47 pm

Way off topic, but AZ apparently wants Oklahoma coach Jeff Capel.

Ummm… they do know that Blake Griffin doesn’t come with him, right?

“Ummm… they do know that Blake Griffin doesn’t come with him, right?”

Maybe the other two McDonald’s All Americans WILL go with him. Capel brought two in that are playing in the game with Taylor.

Oh yeah, GET Coleman!!!

Comment by mook 04.01.09 @ 7:39 pm

Coleman is good! He would also give some much needd class balence. Right now, we are loaded with freshman and sophomores. We will only have one senior next year.

where is Len Elmore getting his infornation that Dixon may be leaving and Pitt program is in a state of flux? Am I not hearing something that others are?

Comment by w bill 04.01.09 @ 9:41 pm

where did you hear that?

Len Elmore didn’t even know he was related to one of the players, and he was. I wouldn’t put any stock into anything he says.

Tim Floyd will be the next coach at arizona. Expect an announcement tomorrow.

Comment by Tiger Paul 04.01.09 @ 10:13 pm

The Big East probably has the most stable group of Coaches in the country, which is good for recruiting to the conference on the whole. Calhoun and Boeheim are their programs and aren’t going anywhere until they retire. Unless Calhoun lands in some real hot water with the recruiting thing. JT III is coaching at the school where his father was a legened. He will not leave unless the program really goes downhill, which won’t happen. Huggins is at his alma matter and probably won’t be going anywhere. If Dixon wasn’t swayed to Arizona a program that is west, would pay a ton, and has great history, then who would steal him? Same goes for Jay Wright, he is in a fertile recruiting ground situated right next to Jersey and Philly, he has an incredible class coming, and probably won’t leave any time soon. The fact of the matter is also that there aren’t many jobs that are going to open any time soon that would put any of these coaches in a better position. Unless coach K or Roy Williams or Bill Self were too retire in the coming years, there aren’t really any better jobs. This conference looks to be stable for years to come and it will bode well for the level of play we will see on the floor.

Comment by Ontario Lett's Go Pitt 04.01.09 @ 10:26 pm

dan, Elmore mentioned this during the 2nd half of MacDonald’s game.

If Floyd leaves USC, I would doubt that Dixon would consider being Ben’s biggest rival … and not sure there are any other major openings right now.

Comment by w bill 04.01.09 @ 10:37 pm

I think if the USC job opens up they would be interested in Dixon. They have seen the success Howland has had at UCLA and would have to think Dixon could duplicate that. I also think Dixon would at least take a look at it. He is from the west coast and even though he would have to compete with Ben, he would be right next door to his buddy. Plus we are talking Southern Cal here. They would be able to throw alot of money at Dixon and being that “name” school, might make one want to give it a shot. I personally believe Dixon when he says he wants to stay at Pitt, but I think it would be very tempting to at least take a look if the opportunity existed.

Comment by Z-boy 04.01.09 @ 11:24 pm

z-boy, you make several good points and maybe it is just wishful thinking on my part, but I would have to believe Dixon really is happy here and would not want to directly compete with Ben.

I think this is really a critical time for Pitt which will lose its best players and has its best recruiting class coming in. Should Dixon leave (and again, I doubt that he will), the incoming talent including Taylor may asked to be released which will be devastating.

Comment by w bill 04.02.09 @ 8:30 am

Just my gut feeling, but if Dixon was not interested in Arizona, I don’t think he would leave for USC, which in my mind is a lower profile job. As a career move, it just seems like he would be headed in the wrong direction. Arguably, Arizona is a more prestigious program than Pitt, but USC…not so much. They do have money, however, but the rumors were that Arizona was willing to spend big bucks also.
