Well, So That Kind of Sucked

I have not been curled up and fetal over the loss. The conference tournaments (writing a lot over at Fanhouse) and everything that has happened this week (included a flooded basement) has deprived me of much sleep and available time.

I have to admit, though, before the conference tournament began I had pictured another BET Championship. And a post entitled “Three’s a magic number.” Why? Presumably Pitt would have beaten WVU and UConn three times in one year and then beaten Louisville in the championship game (third time in a row to knock out L-ville in the BET).  Naturally the script came no where close to working out.

I’m not really down with the whole “beneficial loss” argument. I would have liked to at least made it one more game. Not to mention it is never good to lose to WVU. Frankly, they scare the crap out of me for next year. Devin Ebanks used the BET to make it his coming out party. Huggins must be sending Kelvin Sampson a new cell phone every other week as a thank you for screwing up so badly at Indiana.

That said, it didn’t “expose a weakness” in Pitt. Yes, they struggled with the 1-3-1. Credit to WVU for switching defenses. At times they even threw a match-up zone in there just to keep shifting things around on Pitt. That’s part of why Huggins is such a good coach. He has a team that was well schooled in the 1-3-1 from the previous regime, that he can have them put that out there without much warning or prep. He uses the advantages he has well.

BTW, please use facts to back up your argument or you undermine your credibility. Example:

The Panthers don’t have super-talented players. They don’t have great outside shooters like Connecticut, who can make an opponent pay for switching to a 1-3-1.

Pitt is going to throw the ball inside to Blair, and that’s that. The Panthers made it easy for West Virginia. Too easy.

UConn? UConn is your example. UConn shot 34.8?% on threes. Pitt shot 35.4%. At least use a team that shoots better than Pitt.

Pitt shot poorly in the second half. Heck, despite shooting over 50% in the first half, there were at least 3 shots that just did not fall. Bad shooting definitely hurt.

Pitt played a bad game. WVU played a great one. That’s why the score was so lopsided. WVU still would have won the game, but Pitt made it worse with bad shooting.

“Wherever they put us, we’ve got to play better than we did today,” Pitt coach Jamie Dixon said. “We just didn’t execute. We got outplayed in every area. We got what we deserved.”

“We feel down right now and for the next couple of hours,” Blair said. “But this is motivation. We didn’t grind it out like we usually do and we’ve got to blame ourselves.”

Pitt has reached the Big East final seven times in the past eight seasons, but never advanced past the Sweet Sixteen with any of those teams.

“It really doesn’t matter where they put us,” Blair said. “We’re just going to have to grind it out. I know this is hard to say but I’d rather lose in the Big East Tournament and win the NCAA than win the Big East and lose in the NCAA. We’ll be all right.”

By the way, in case anyone was wondering, Coach Dixon also shared the blame with the coaching as well. Here’s the full quote from him.

In the second half, we just didn’t execute. I think we were — we weren’t coached well, we weren’t prepared well again for some things and we just got outplayed in every area. So, you know, it’s just one of those games. We’ve got to do a better job and again, this is a very good team. They’ve only lost to good people. We had beaten them twice this year but both were tough games and they really did outplay us in every aspect today so, you know, we understand that we got what we deserved and the responsibility falls on ourselves.

In the transcript from the post-game presser, Dixon also second-guessed himself over putting Biggs out there late in the 1st half and that 3d foul that kept him out to start the 2nd. A team failure.

Blair seemed a bit all over the place after the game. Ah, youth. At one point going conspiracy.

“The refs, they have it out for me, I guess,” he said. “They want to get DeJuan Blair out of the game.”

The next going mature.

“We’re going to use this as motivation,” Blair said. “I hate to feel like this. I felt like this after we lost to Providence and we bounced back. We’re an excellent bounce-back team.”

That was encouraging to hear.

So was this:

“I don’t know what to do about the refs,” Blair said, quietly. “I guess I have to handle them better.”

And the team can not take anything for granted.

That game fell in the, who cares dept. As long as PITT plays the games like they played UCONN. both times we will not be stopped by any teams,Including NC or Louisville,Memphis. But if we play soft and turn the ball over it will be ALL OVER. The kids and coaches have it all in there hands ,they better be mentally prepared like we were against Marq.Uconn. THe big games start on Thursday.LETS GO PITT

It’s been my contention all year that we’re not developing the focus required to be a champion. Obviously, these are kids, so it may take a firm hand from the coach to keep them on track. However, it seems strange that we’d be exhibiting these traits, particularly this late in the year.
Perhaps this isn’t Dixon’s style, though. If we go back to his hiring, his strongest proponents were the players themselves. My guess is players don’t lobby for disciplinarians.
I love what Dixon has done for this program and want the administration to lock him up long-term. I’d also like the program to take the fabled “next step.” This is when Dixon must earn his keep. Here’s hoping we come back focused and refreshed in the tournament. Let’s go Pitt!

I agree focus has been an issue at times this year and seemed directly responsible for the Prov and WVU losses. That said, you can’t blame the L’Ville or even the ‘Nova losses on it, so how big a deal could it be?

I have to believe Pitt will roll over anyone they face in round 1, focused or not, and from there as long as they avoid a horrific hiccup in the second round I see them being extremely driven and motivated in the Sweet 16 and –hopefully– beyond. Go Pitt!

So Memphis and Carolina are locked in at 1 seeds. Michigan State is losing right now. If they go down, they’re out like Kansas. Oklahoma’s got a slim chance, but they would NOT get one over us. Ditto UConn. No one in the Pac 10 has a shot at one. I still think Duke gets one if they win the conference tournament. So that means if Duke wins tomorrow and Louisville wins tonight, we can sweat a TON tomorrow. Either of those teams going down, with a MSU loss, will lock us into a 1.

i wouldnt be so sure about memphis….

i still think we’re a lock for the #1….i think even if duke wins, we get it over them..remember its body of work not just one crappy game…..i think maybe we lost out on indy if louisville wins the BET, but i guess ending up in boston wouldn’t be that bad..better there than arizona…..

i would rather be the 2 in boston/indy/memphis then the 1 in arizona……

the top 8 teams are still the best in the country – unc, pitt, uconn, lvl, duke, memphis, mich st and oklahoma….there may be upsets, but these should be the top 2 lines regardless….being a 1 would be nice, but being a 2 you still need to beat 3 lesser teams before you get to these 8 which are the elite 8 before upsets…….

Comment by schoey 03.14.09 @ 2:37 pm

Pitt is a LOCK for a #1 seed. It really just means an easy game to start and an easier game in the sweet 16. The second round game and elite 8 games will be extremely difficult. The 8 or 9 seed is usually a team that has played really well as of late or started the year out on fire and is in a little slump. Think Texas, Ohio State, Marquette or Maryland. The second round game will be the most difficult for Pitt, I believe.

I was amazed to see Sam Young smile TWICE during the WVU game, yukking it up with Blair. That’s 2X more than I’ve seen him smile all season. If this was an indicator of they’re mindset towards the BET then sobeit, time to move on.

Does Levance have a hernia? It was announced as such during the game.

I expect many surprises during this year’s tourney. Expect WVU to go a long way as well Gonzaga, Louisville and Syracuse. Great coaching will trump athleticism and I hope Jamie and staff are up to the challenge.

It says here that Syracuse will not make it out of the first weekend.

There is zero chance that Pitt does not get a #1 seed, and a 95% chance that we get the Dayton( #1 overall) seed. We are #1 RPI, top 8 SOS, and have a very good record against other top RPI teams.

Pitt has great coaching AND athleticism by the way. This bandwagon has gotten awfully light since that WVU loss the other day. Fans forget that we beat that same team twice, very handily, and were coming off the biggest home win in history. Kind of hard to get excited about the game. Add in the fact that we were defending champs and the #2 seed and you have one team exceptionally motivated and the other not so much. The foul trouble changed the entire first half and, surprise, you have all of the necessary ingredients for an upset. Huggins and WVU played great and are a pretty good team. Not a huge deal. WVU will be better than our second round opponent and look like a sweet 16 team. I assure you Pitt will play with more energy if they get to the sweet 16 and are matched up with a team like WVU. If they get that far, and man I hope Pitt does, then expect a similar result to the first 2 WVU games.

Omar, you don’t seem to recognize that Duke has been a 1 seed in 12 of the last 16 years or something like that. They are the committee’s favorite team. Memphis has won 24 in a row. How are they NOT locked in to a 1?

Comment by maz. 03.14.09 @ 3:48 pm

Pitt has a better resume then Duke and Memphis (lost to Georgetown and Syracuse, Pitt beat them both). It is a lock. Don’t worry about it. Memphis/Duke might get a one seed and Pitt would still be a one seed. It really doesn’t matter. If Louisville wins tonight, then the one seeds are Pitt, UNC, Memphis/Duke (depending on this Maryland game) and Louisville. If Duke and Memphis lose, then it is UNC, Pitt, Louisville and UCONN. Book it.

Comment by omar 03.14.09 @ 3:55 pm

memphis has a SOS of 54…i feel like they can get the 4th #1 but only if duke loses….duke has a 2 rpi and 2 sos this morning, and they are the media darlings, so if they win the ACC i wouldnt be suprised to see 1-8:

UNC, LVL, Pitt, Duke, Uconn, Memphis, Mich St, Okla…

Memphis will not be put in memphis, so they are a 2 in some other region..figure they put UNC in boston? and then lvl in memphis and pitt still gets indy….

The statement that UConn is a great outside shooting team is just another incorrect obersvation made by Pgh Trib columnist John Harris. Quite frankly, I don’t understand how he is qualified to write for a major paper. I honestly consider 90% of the bloggers on this site to be more knowledgable than he is (and no, I do not work for or have any relatives at the Post-Gazzette.)

It’s hard to be knowledgeable about anything when you spend 98 percent of the time focused on the Steelers.
