All-Big East Announced

After a couple years of being mocked for 11 player deep 1st team All-Big East squads. And a system that would have some 33 players chosen for the various levels, the Big East went to a more traditional style. Here’s the All BE-teams.

ALL-BIG EAST FIRST TEAM
Hasheem Thabeet, Connecticut, C, Jr., 7-3, 263, Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania
Terrence Williams, Louisville, F, Sr., 6-6, 210, Seattle, Wash.
Jerel McNeal, Marquette, G, Sr., 6-3, 200 Chicago, Ill.
Luke Harangody, Notre Dame, F, Jr., 6-8, 251, Schererville, Ind.
DeJuan Blair, Pittsburgh, C, So., 6-7, 265, Pittsburgh, Pa.
Sam Young, Pittsburgh, F, Sr., 6-6, 215, Clinton, Md.

ALL-BIG EAST SECOND TEAM
A.J. Price, Connecticut, G, Sr., 6-2, 181, Amityville, N.Y.
Wesley Matthews, Marquette, G, Sr., 6-5, 215, Madison, Wis.
Jonny Flynn, Syracuse, G, So., 6-0, 185, Niagara Falls, N.Y.
Dante Cunningham, Villanova, F, Sr., 6-8, 230, Silver Spring, Md.
Da’Sean Butler, West Virginia, F, Jr., 6-7, 225, Newark, N.J.

ALL-BIG EAST THIRD TEAM
Deonta Vaughn, Cincinnati, G, Jr., 6-1, 195, Indianapolis, Ind.
Jeff Adrien, Connecticut, F, Sr., 6-7, 243, Brookline, Mass.
Earl Clark, Louisville, G/F, Jr., 6-8, 220, Rahway, N.J.
Levance Fields, Pittsburgh, G, Sr., 5-10, 190, Brooklyn, N.Y.
Jeremy Hazell, Seton Hall, G, So., 6-5, 185, Bronx, N.Y.

BIG EAST HONORABLE MENTION
Weyinmi Efejuku, Providence, G, Sr., 6-5, 210, Fresh Meadows, N.Y.
Dominique Jones, USF, G, So., 6-4, 205, Lake Wales, Fla.
Scottie Reynolds, Villanova, G, Jr., 6-2, 195, Herndon, Va.
Alex Ruoff, West Virginia, G, Sr., 6-6, 220, Spring Hill, Fla.

BIG EAST ALL-ROOKIE TEAM
Yancy Gates, Cincinnati, F, Fr., 6-9, 255, Cincinnati, Ohio
Kemba Walker, Connecticut, G, Fr., 6-0, 175, Bronx, N.Y.
Greg Monroe, Georgetown, C, Fr., 6-10, 240, Gretna, La.
Samardo Samuels, Louisville, F, Fr., 6-8, 240, Trelawny, Jamaica
Mike Rosario, Rutgers, G, Fr., 6-3, 180, Jersey City, N.J.
Devin Ebanks, West Virginia, F, Fr., 6-9, 205, Long Island City, N.Y.

DeJuan Blair was the only unanimous selection for the 1st team. Mildly surprising that Thabeet was not unanimous.

I’m stunned good and bad. Understand, that this was voted by the coaches and the ballots had to be in by Friday — in other words before Sam Young blew through UConn on Saturday.

I cannot believe that Levance Fields was only 3d team. That’s ridiculous. Absolutely ridiculous.

I know Harangody’s numbers are as good as last year, but forget the fact that ND is worse. The fact is, that Harangody plays just as minimalist defense as the rest of the Irish. It’s not like he’s a force at both ends.

The East Coast Bias is in the process of putting together a bloggers All-Big East awards set.

Here’s how I voted for an All-Big East team. I opted to do it with the idea of making a complete starting five.

  1. Levance Fields, PG, Pitt
  2. Jerel McNeal, SG, Marquette
  3. Hasheem Thabeet, C, UConn
  4. Terrance Williams, SF, Louisville
  5. DeJuan Blair, PF, Pitt

I agonized about leaving off Sam Young off the vote, but with only 5 spots, wanting a complete team and trying to be somewhat un-biased I had to go with this group.

I hope fields takes this and makes it his personal mission to prove he’s the best pg in the big east……

i cant argue with anyone on that first team, but id take fields over all 3 of those 2nd team guards….thats a shame….

Jesus….Fields 3rd team…..assist to turnover ratio was sick!

Pitt would have lost 10 games if fields was no the general…….

The true measure of a “point” guard is his # of assists and # of turnovers and the ratio. I rest my case. Unfortunately, PGs are never really rewarded for performing their primary role at a high level. Third team selection is a disgrace.

Calhoun quote in the NYT article “I’m not proud of the way we played,” he said. “I’m proud of this season. We didn’t look like a team at any point that was going to pack it in, but we looked tired at the end.”
TIRED!! They had a week off before the game!!! The only thing tired was Calhoun’s formula for beating us.

Chas, every team needs a sixth man. Also, if you are truly constructing a team I would prefer to have Sam on my starting five over having both Blair and Thabeet. He is much more versatile.

I have to say Flynn has no business being 2nd team while fields is 3rd team. Pitt is hurt by having probably 3 of the best 6 players in the league and people didn’t want them all to be first team. I hope this doesn’t hurt the POY voting. On the Big East site, Williams is leading POY voting by fans by an enormous margin. This is a travesty as both Young and Blair are far better, and I was blown away that people are even considering Williams a POY candidate. I’m sorry but averaging 12pts 8 boards and 5 assists is not a POY, that is a very good role player. I would counter his consideration for player of the year by posing anyone in the Louisville program if they would rather have Young, Blair, or McNeal rather than williams. If you said no, you’d be a liar. Young is averaging pretty much 19 a game, which nobody seems to notice. But, it is mostly because of Blairs average of around 16 and 12. Far more impressive than what Williams does. The fact that they have these stats on a team that finished 2nd in the league and beat UCONN twice would in the past locked up one of them as the POY. If it goes right, Young and Blair should be co-POY.

Was at the game. Words cannot describe. So I’ll shut up.

The way they got around making a decision between Blair and Thabeet by putting both of them on first team (that’s weak… make a decision… head to head its Blair… overall impact Thabeet). Then they counter it, and justify leaving Fields off by only having 1 guard on first team.

The sad thing is that there is only 1 comparable PG in the country and that is Ty Lawson. For Fields to be on 3rd team Big East is moronic considering he is the absolute best PG in the league and top 2 in the country.

Blair will win POY. Write it down.

Comment by Mark 03.08.09 @ 6:45 pm

Fields on the 3rd team, WTF!?!?! He’s only the best assist to turnover ratio point guard in the nation. Yoi! Double Yoi!

Comment by Dugdog 03.08.09 @ 7:08 pm

The more I think about the Fields situation the more angry I get. He was 2nd team last year. How the hell does he get dropped down this year. Matthew’s and Price aren’t even in the top 10 of BE for assists. This is just a scoring award. I guess shooting guards should only apply.

I expect Harangody to win POY. Young and Blair will split votes. Harangody leads the BE in scoring and rebounds.

Comment by Tiger Paul 03.08.09 @ 9:19 pm

Correction, Fields was second team 2006-07. Of course, he was injured last year.

Comment by Tiger Paul 03.08.09 @ 9:24 pm

if Harangody wins POY … I think it will be better for our boys. they like to play with a chip on their shoulders. always something to prove…

Here is the senior video they played during one of the commercial timeouts on Saturday. When I saw it during the game, I could almost feel a tear building. Even after I have watched it a dozen or so times today, I still get chills.

I put it on youtube for all to see. Enjoy

Pittengineer, thanks for the youtube post. Great.

Love that the video captured one of Pittsnogle’s laughable attempts at defense.

This will be a special March.

great video!….vance’s stepback 3 vs duke will go down as one of my all time favorite pitt hoop memories..here’s to hoping a few more are coming in the next month…..

Comment by schoey 03.09.09 @ 5:50 am

Levance is about 203125167 times better than AJ Price.

Comment by maz. 03.09.09 @ 10:37 am

Also, the third team would take the second team to school in a head-to-head.
