What has become clear with nearly half the conference slate played, the Big East is best divided into 4 tiers: Top, Promising, Not horrible, Bottom feeders.

Bottom Feeders: Rutgers, DePaul, Seton Hall and St. John’s. With the exception of DePaul, these are still dangerous teams. They are buried in a deep conference. Whether it’s lack of depth because of academics and transfers (Seton Hall), injuries (St. John’s), bad coach (Rutgers) or just an overall mess (DePaul). They strike me as more dangerous the longer into the season because they become more desperate and have less to lose.

Not Horrible: USF and Cinci. Stan Heath is making strides with this team. I think he’s playing a little too close to the edge of catastrophe with the Island of Misfit Toys with talented but flagged transfers, but there are clearly some flashes and talent. They gave Syracuse and ‘Nova scares. They stayed with Pitt for a half.  Cinci was killed again with injuries. Still, a scary team on any given night.

Promising: Good teams with too many flaws to know what to expect. This is where the bulk of the teams are meeting: Providence, WVU, Villanova, ND, Syracuse and Georgetown. Whether it involves issue of depth, match-up problems, youth, one-dimensional, or just not enough options. These teams can get hot for a stretch. They are especially dangerous at home. They are also just as likely to go cold and look like they should be lower. Four or five of these teams will make the NCAA Tournament.

Top: UConn, Louisville and Pitt. The best teams. They have the mix of coaching, talent, depth and experience. The teams are relatively injury free. They can score and defend.

Now if you counted, I only have 15 teams. Marquette is the team I’m just not sure about. Their record (6-0) says Top. The team and my instincts, though, say Promising. No real interior presence. A 1st year coach. A veteran team that has run hot-and-cold in the past couple years.

In conference play, they’ve had 4 of their 6 games at home. Their best conference wins came at home against WVU and ‘Nova. They played two of the games against the worst of the conference — at Rutgers and DePaul. Against Providence, they had to rally late to win on the road.

Their non-con also offers little in clues. They lost to Tennessee in Nashville. They needed a 3 at the buzzer to beat NC State on the road. They beat a down Wisconsin team by 3. Got pounded by Dayton outside of Chicago.

The truth is, Marquette will be the big unknown until the final two weeks of the season: at G-town, UConn, at Louisville, at Pitt, Syracuse.

I think it does boil down to 3 teams. Louisville, Pitt, and UConn. If Pitt beats Nova and Notre Dame, and UConn wins at Louisville Feb 2nd, there’s an excellent chance that Pitt and UConn would be 24-1 when they meet. I think it will be tough for Pitt to beat UConn on their home floor, but they play here last game of the season. Any way you look at it, it’s going to go down as possibly 2 of the best games Pitt has played in recent memory.

Good analysis. Regarding Marquette, we’ve been worried about them in past years because of their “athletic” guard play, but have handled them in the BET just fine. With Dixon, Wannamaker, and Brown on the wing these days, I’m looking forward to knocking them off during the regular season as well…Seems like McNeal and James have been there forever…

So Pitt’s #3 this week behind Duke and uconn. Here’s my problem with us not being #2: Uconn loses at home by double digits to a mediocre Gtown team; we lose an away game by 6 points to a very good lville team.

I know, I know who cares. Just annoying and I have too much time on my hands;

steve – just finished a similar rant in an email to a friend of mine…..college basketball polls are the same as college football now…what have you done for me lately..the only reason we’re behind uconn is cause we lost more recently…its dumb, but again, the polls don’t really mean anything at the moment, so if anything its easier on the kids..less pressure….

duke lost to an unranked michigan team too…remember that…….

I see we moved up to #3 behind Duke and Uconn. WF at #6

Sorry, should have read Steve’s post before I started typing

Steve & Schoey, since you care about so much about rankings, then why aren’t you fired up at Duke being No. 1 instead of Pitt? Duke lost to a mediocre Michigan team (which was blown out last week by PSU): Pitt’s loss was a competitive game to a Top Ten Team which is on a hot streak at their building. Furthermore, in common opponents, Duke beat Gtown at home by 9; Pitt beat them by 16 in DC.

Actually, I have no issue with Duke being No. 1 though I’m certainly no Duke fan. Just advising everyone to chill out and enjoy the games. It was a pleasure watching our execution in the 2nd half yesterday whether we were ranked 1st or 101st.

I expect Pitt to be #1 again on Feb 9th, just in time for the WVU game at the Pete.

Excellent post, as usual. I would love to see a Pitt-UNC matchup in March. Hansborough vs. Blair/Biggs as well as Fields (calm, smart, field general) vs. Lawson (brash, quick, athletically gifted) would be just a couple of the great battles involved in this game.

P.S. Duke will get bounced by a mid-major in the second round, so who cares what they’re ranked right now anyway?

Pitt-UNC match-up; Fields-Lawson

I think that Fields gives us more net points than Lawson gives his team because of the overall combination of his assists, scoring and command of the floor. Fields does seem to have difficulty, however, guarding a quick guard one-on-one. The front court guys often have to pick up his man.

Comment by BigGuy 01.26.09 @ 6:00 pm

I love Fields as much as the next Pitt fan, but I think Lawson has a slight edge. I get what BigGuy is saying. Fields soes dish out a lot of assists, and is definatley the best PG in the BE, but he has more physical limitations than Lawson. Still, this is a great Pitt team who can play with and beat anyone in the country.

If Pitt plays UNC at the end of the year, does that mean that we got past the Sweet 16? That’s all I care about.

Marquette just beat Notre Dame in South Bend…I’d file them under the “top” teams, at least for now.

Comment by merlin 01.26.09 @ 9:13 pm

isn’t it time to drop 7-loss ND and 6-loss Gtown from the rankings? The Hoopies deserve to be ranked ahead of both of them

Comment by w bill 01.26.09 @ 9:32 pm

PIIT vs UNC in March probably means a Great 8 or Final 4 game but it could be the Championship game.

Comment by IronmanEE68 01.26.09 @ 10:49 pm

UConn has a case for #1. They just beat 2 ranked teams last week (Villanova and away at Notre Dame). Duke played NC State and Maryland, bottom feeders of the ACC.

Other than Marquette, who we always struggle with, no other ranked team worries me. Yeah we’re going to lose some games but there’s no shame in it. What worries me is coming out flat against the aforementioned bottom feeders and not horrible teams. I’d like to see Pitt put teams away earlier in games.

Comment by pittprowler 01.26.09 @ 10:55 pm

Aint no way Marquette is a top team because ND never was a top team. The only reason Marquette is ranked in the top 10 is because they play in the BE.

Comment by Kenny 01.26.09 @ 11:08 pm

Great post. And always great to win at WVU. There are many signs that this Pitt team is the beast we have always wanted. If Pitt stays in the top three of the country throughout the regular season we will have another sign that March could truly be spectacular.

Comment by TonyinHouston 01.27.09 @ 2:24 am

rankings don’t matter til Pitt beats UConn,
G’town and ND are frauds. Marquette & ‘Nova have the guards to take them deep into the post season, don’t count them out. Fields was better offensively at WVU than I thought, but does have trouble staying in front of quicker guards. The big Difference is no Ronald Ramone, too streaky, too small and too slow for the BE. Defensively Brown Wanny, and Dixon can match up and that is the diff this year.

Comment by Kurt 01.27.09 @ 1:25 pm

Regarding the Pitt-UNC matchup, some of the latest bracketologies I’ve seen have UNC a #2, and Pitt a #1, in the SAME bracket. Clearly, one of the toughest Elite 8 matchups, IMO.

Of course by that time, should that bracket and chalk hold, I wouldn’t be concerned at all with Pitt’s chances.
