Finally Got Mason

Okay, this was one the Pitt football team needed. Dan Mason out of Penn Hills made his verbal. One of the top remaining uncommitted players in Pennsylvania, and one of the top linebacker prospects. He’s a consensus 4-star recruit.

He had offers from Pitt, WVU and PSU among others. He had it down to WVU and Pitt — because there was an opportunity to get out there early.

“That was a huge part,” Mason said of the middle linebacker opening. “That’s why I wanted to get down to Pitt and West Virginia. Both are losing their star middle linebacker. I can play in the middle, outside, wherever you want me to play.”

It doesn’t mean he will. It just means there is a better opportunity at early playing time.

Ultimately, the comfort with Pitt’s coaching staff was the difference maker.

“The main thing is that I was real comfortable with the coaches at Pitt,” he said. “They have been recruiting me for three years and I’ve had a great relationship with all those guys. I took my time with this decision because I wanted to have no doubt and I have no doubt. I know that Pitt is the right place for me.”

Dan Mason is a great get that PITT needs. You got to love his attitude and ability and potential. LB was a concern for PITT at this point in time with a huge All American hole at MLB. It will take some time but its great to know PITT will be strong at LB for the foreseeable future.

How is Pitt strong at LB? They are far from it. They have nobody at LB who is a guaranteed player. And the only people who rate Mason high are the pro-Pitt Pantherlair and equally pro-Pitt Bob Lictenfels. ESPN gave him a so so ranking and he only had five offers with one being a MAC school.

Greg Williams, redshirt FR, started the last 11 games at the Will LB and became pretty good in the 2nd half of the year.

Max Gruder, another reshirt FR, got much playing time especialy later in the season

Shane Murray, previous starter at SAM LB, returns

Like Rivals and Scout may suck up to Pitt. ESPN is Dick Vitale personfied … it sucks up to all the established majors … if FL, USC, Oh St Oklahoma, etc. doesn’t offer, then no way a prospect can have any value. It is true that Mason’s stock dropped during his senior yesr (he was 2nd in western PA to Gateway’s Bell at the beginning), there is no way that he is just a so-so candidate, and is highly rated on too many services and certainly has potential.

Don’t forget Shane Hayle (who redshirted this past season and I think was a five star on some sites)…As for Mason, he is a LB who had an offer from PSU…Much as we love to hate PSU, no one can say that they are known for recruiting “so-so” LB’s.

I believe Shane Hale is moving to DE. Nonetheless, Pitt has 2 starters back at the OLB positions with potential but inexperienced others (T Roberts, M Gruder, S Dell, B Lindsay and D Mason) for back ups and MLB … protected by a DL that even Mark can agree (unless he is totally biased) is as deep and talented as anyone else.

DE – Sheard, Romeus, Tucker, Tkach, Hale
DT – Williams, Mustakas,Duhart, Caregin, Bokor

all are proven except Hale

Rivals doesn’t even have Mason in their Top 250, ESPN makes him sound like a career backup, and even Scout doesn’t even have them in the top 100 and they are very pro-Pitt because of Lictenfels. As for the LBs on the staff, they have one who is actually good- Greg Williams. Murray is a former QB who is okay IF he is healthy and the rest haven’t done a damn thing. But just to show I’m not just being a jerk, the DL is excellent.

Comment by Mark 01.23.09 @ 10:07 pm

just to show some of you are not jerks and stupid, McKillop was All American and the recruit sites had him as so so. Lets let Mason become what he will be without trying to belittle him like the stupids from the butgers, buckholes, nits, neers and queers schools want to do. Thank you.

Espn has Mason as the 38th ILB and grade him 76. The top graded ILB is 85, and there are only 5 ILBs graded 80 or above. From Grade 78 down to 75, there are 41 players ranked from 11 to 52. Thus, it is a crapshoot where any of these are ranked with grades so close, yet it can be a big difference from being rated 11th best or 50th best.

Tom Lemming which has no Pitt ties has Mason as 18th ranked ILB — much better than ESPN’s 38th, and all other services have Mason rated much higher than ESPN. Rivals has him 20th.

Rivals 100 or 250 as well as eveyone else’s top players are usually dominated by the skill players, but if you are in the top 25 of any one position nationally, you can be deemed as a pretty good prospect … certainly above a “so-so” status.

I’m not saying the kid won’t be good. I’m just saying to keep expectations reasonable. Mason, Kolby Gray, and Bernardo Nunez are good prospects, but let’s not get crazy. They are all far from sure things. Too often fans get excited over prospects who really aren’t elite and then when they fail they get trashed. Does Bill Stull ring a bell? He is at the level he was expected to be but because Pitt fans had expectations for him that were too high, he now looks like a complete failure. And Stull was ranked higher than Kolby Gray, the next Savior. If people look at Mason as the next McKillop, Nunez as the next Romeus, and Gray as the guy who is going to bring great QB play back to Pitt, then they are probably setting them up for failure. Be excited, be hopeful, but also be reasonable.

Q- what does Scott McKillop, CJ Davis, Greg Romeus, Mick Williams and Rashad Duncan have in common?

A- all are Wannstedt recruits that were rated 2-stars by Rivals or Scout.com but now have a good chance of playing in the pros. And all were rated lower than Dan Mason – so why should Pitt fans not be happy that Mason is coming to Pitt?

Sure, there are no guarantees with 17 – 18 year olds, but you don’t discard a recruit just because ESPN has him low while at least 4 other services regard him highly.

Comment by w bill 01.24.09 @ 4:11 pm

good points w bill. I have a lot of confidence in Wannstedt as a recruiter – especially on D. As a fan, I get more excited with each passing recruiting class since we keep getting top rated classes – which helps give me confidence that we should keep getting better!

Comment by Dishman 01.24.09 @ 9:39 pm

Heres the best point yet. Most of Wannstedt’s recruits don’t pan out. Most of any coach’s recruits don’t pan out. You named five two star players that may play in the pros, but you conveniently left out all the other two, three, four, and five star players who will NOT. So the chances are very slim on any one player ever becoming excellent. You two guys are probably the same ones that thought Dorin Dickerson, Kevin Collier, Joe Thomas, Pat Bostick and countless others would also be great.

Comment by Mark 01.24.09 @ 10:58 pm

Agree with Mark – the staff’s purpose in recruiting is to get players on the team who will contribute to the team’s success. That’s the extent of it when in the recruiting phase. The staff doesn’t look at stars or follow what the websites write, they know who and what they want and try to get them on the roster.

What happens after that is the staff’s real concern – that’s where these kids either rise above, remain average or don’t pan out.

While we all seem to kind of latch onto favorite recruits we want to see do well, I’ve learned that you really can’t tell how a recruit will do until his third or forth year really. There are a few exceptions of course like LeSean McCoy, but they are few and far between.

Comment by Reed 01.25.09 @ 6:45 am

I agree that the rankings are a crapshoot. But this argument all started when Mark downplayed Mason because he was rated so low on the ESPN ranking (while high on 4 other services.)

McCoy, Byham, Sheard, Malecki, Caregin, Otah are all 4-star Wannstedt recruits that are doing well (and Dickerson may well prove to be valuable in his senior season, and K Collier who played behind McCoy and StephensHowlings still has 2 years to go) … and by all accounts (not by Pitt poeple but by beat writers who have critcized the program when necessary), Jacobsen, L Nix, Baldwin, Hale, J Holley and C Burns (all who have 3 or 4 years eligibility left) all have shown enough in practice to create high expectations for the future.

Comment by w bill 01.25.09 @ 9:47 am

I omitted Tony Tucker who played well at DE as a FR when giving Sheard a rest.

Th obvious disappointment is not developing a QB .. but considering the amount of underclass talent on this current roster, I think you guys are being way too critical of Wannstedt’s developmental skills
