Larry the Touchdown Guy

I just finished shoveling out the snow drifts up here in Maine where 16 to 18 inches of snow fell yesterday after they had forecast about half the amount.

Larry Fitzgerald positioned himself as one of, if not the, premier wide receiver in the NFL last night. Three touchdowns and over 150 yards receiving in the NFC Championship Game will get you noticed. If casual football fans didn’t know who he was prior to last night, they do now. And if they still don’t, they surely will after the next two weeks of media hype.

The New York Times wasted no time in featuring Fitzgerald, penning a piece so full of compliments you can’t help but be giddy to have his name associated with Pitt.

The best receiver in football, Fitzgerald doesn’t come with a flamboyant nickname like Plax, or a surname changed to Ocho Cinco, or fancy initials like T. O. He apparently isn’t much for hugging in public, or mugging for the cameras.

How can you not love that?

For the sake of full disclosure amongst high praise, there was a story around the new year that Fitzgerald was involved in a bit of a domestic dispute and his long-time girlfriend and mother of his child was hitting him with a restraining order. There were no chargers filled, but there was a bit of pushing and shoving involved which is never a good thing.

Back to the NFC Championship game. How do you think all the Eagle fan/Pitt Alumni felt watching one of their own light up their own. That must have been a good time. I have to admit, I hope it is more of the same against the Steelers. Whoops.

Last night’s game was a perfect display of what makes Fitzgerald so great (again, from the New York Times story).

He bounced off three tacklers to score the Cardinals’ first touchdown. He hauled in a 62-yard rainmaker from Warner after a lateral from J. J. Arrington, leaving Eagles safety Quintin Demps on the ground in a twisted heap. He caught a 1-yard pass for his third touchdown when poor Sheldon Brown was inexplicably left isolated on Fitzgerald, who goes to Tampa having already blown the great Jerry Rice out of the record book, with 419 postseason receiving yards.

He was powerful. He was fast. And he showed great hands. And at least during this post-season, he was better than Jerry Rice.

The USA today has a nice piece on Fitzgerald and the story of his mother, who died of Breast Cancer in 2003.

When asked his power source, Fitzgerald reaches into his locker for his wallet after practice last week and pulled out his late mother’s 2003 Minnesota driver’s license.

Carol Fitzgerald, who died of breast cancer in 2003, is the inspiration fueling the talented wide receiver on his postseason Super Bowl title mission.

“She never leaves my side,” Fitzgerald says. “I always have her with me.

“Whenever I’m having a tough day and I think things aren’t going well for me, I just look at my mom’s picture. She has that smile on her face.

Whether your talking on the field talent, or off the field values and personality, I’ll take Fitzgerald over any receiver in the NFL without question.

Expect Fitzgerald’s Pittsburgh ties to come up multiple times during the longest two weeks in sports. After about 10 days I can’t wait for the Big Game just so the media hype will come to an end. However, Larry may be the one player I wont mind hearing about over and over again.

And try this on for size. I know it’s way early to speculate, but if Larry were to get a ring and continue on the track he is on, could we all be meeting up in Canton for a HOF ceremony someday?

I’ll try and be back later today to preview Syracuse and post an Open Thread unless Chas’ beats me to it. Thanks for reading.

Keith, Whoops, indeed! I’m sure that you realize that most probably the majority of users on this site are Stiller fans. While we certainly root for Pitt players, you also must consider the practice facility – Heinz Field cooperative agreement. BTW, did you know Pitt’s locker room at Heinz is larger than the Steelers’ — I’ve seen both and assure you it is. Of course, Pitt has 80 players on their roster vs Steelrs’ 53, but nonetheless, Pitt’s locker room with of its players is still very spacious.

While many people throughout the state was rooting for an all PA match-up, the majority of locals (Pgh) weren’t due to the Cardinal – Pittsburgh connection. Please consider:

– former Steeler coaches: Whisenhut, Grimm, Spence and Haley (whose dad was the Steelers’ super scout during the lry days if the 70s

– former Pitt players: Fitz and Gerald Hayes

– Pgh natives: Reggie Wells (OL) and Steve Breston (WR)

– former Steeler players: Truman (TE), St Pierre (QB), Haggans (OLB – injured reserve), Morey (WR)

Larry isnt the best receiver in the league, he’s the best player in the league.

I’d vote for Larry for President.

Wouldn’t most people reading this blog be Pitt fans first, then steeler fans? If this was a steeler site, then that would be true, but I will always root for Fitz over the steelers

I’m not sure what it was like 10, 20 or 30 years ago, but there are A WWOLE LOT of students from Philly that go to Pitt. I live with 6 other guys in a house on Semple and we’re all from Philly, and none of us knew each other before we met in the Towers freshman year. I wouldn’t be surprised if 1/3 of the students were from Philly.

Pitt sinks to #4 in ESPN poll.

W Bill, of course I realize that the majority of fans are Steelers fans. I went to Pitt and know the demographic. Nothing wrong with a few friendly jabs.

I hope Fitzgerald scores 8 touchdowns against the Steelers in two weeks. There are few things in life as annoying as living in Pittsburgh and having to deal with Steeler fans on a daily basis.

Who on this blog would be upset with this headline:

Larry Fitzgerald Catches Four TD Passes But Steelers Beat Cards 35-28?

Comment by BigGuy 01.19.09 @ 1:41 pm

as a pitt fan, i would like to see fitz do well in the super bowl,7 catches 1 td 125 yards but my nfl team is the steelers, i want them to win the game. What a great yr for sports in Pittsburgh, Pens go to the stanley cup finals, pitt fb has best record in a verrrrry long time, pitt hoops ranked #1 for the first time and steelers going to the super bowl

Somebody tell Coach K that the BE has 4 teams in the AP Top Ten. That was his argument last week for why the ACC was better than the BE. I guess he will have to come up with a new rationale this week. probably a 1-2 ranking trumps 4 in the top ten, or something like that.

1) I realize that this is a Pitt site, but still want to see Steelers win vs Cards, as I believe most Pgh area Pitt fans want (despite Fitz and G Hayes). I suppose you Pitt guys from Philly were rooting for the Cards — yea right!!!

2) ACC had 4 teams in top 10 because they haven’t played each other yet. Clemson will eventually dorp out, and Wake plays Duke nex week which will lower one of the teams

3) No. 4 ranking is fair although as we know it means very little. Main thing is regrouping and playing up to the team’s capability tonight

As a pitt grad living in philly and not being a fan of their sports, yesterday was a breath of fresh air….ive been saying for yrs to anyone who would listen that larry was going to be the best reciever in football and an eventual hall of famer…and now its come to fruition..ill be in the burgh for the super bowl weekend, proudly wearing my #11 Arizona Cards jersey!!! and just hoping that its a fun game, and not over after the half…..

I’m about 50-50 when it comes to Steelers vs. Pitt. I root very hard for both, get just down as when either loses, and I’m just as happy when either wins. Steelers-embarass the Cards. The are a mediocre team who just happens to be on a hot streak. Pitt-crush WVU. They aren’t that good, and I hate them with a passion. GO PITTSBURGH!

Despite living in the Pittsbugh area all my life, I have never been a fan of the Stillers. My husband is threatening to divorce me if I root for Larry over Pgh. Hmm, tough decision… (just kidding), I’ll be rooting for Larry secretly, and remain calm on the outside.
