If Ever a Chance to Tinker

Sorry, in my mind I had no choice.

A former City League player, Ed Tinker has decided to commit to Pitt. Tinker has spent the year in prep school in North Carolina. As a 2008 recruit he was a 3-star prospect. The evaluations are still from that time (Insider subs).

Tinker is a monster of a physical specimen, and while he is raw and rough around the edges, he has the tools to develop into a very good college wide receiver. He is tall with a thick, sturdy build. He has long arms. He has a wide catch radius and flashes the ability to snatch the ball outside his frame. He does not show blazing speed, but he is a long strider who can get vertical. He shows very good leaping ability to go up to play that ball at its highest point. He has the potential to develop into a very good red-zone target because of his height and arm length.

That’s right a project. And if we go back to the 2008 evaluations, Chris Dokish put him as #30 in the Commonwealth last year and someone who might be of use on the defense.

The top prospect in Pittsburgh’s City League. Solid at 6’1” and 190 pounds. Decent speed and good athleticism. Excellent hands. Can also project at safety or even grow into a linebacker down the road. Strong, fluid runner on offense and a rangy hitter on defense.

Last year, Pitt wasn’t one of his schools. He was looking at WVU, L-ville, MSU and Colorado.

On it’s face, in a year where Pitt only has a limited scholarships and a glut at WR this seemed like a head scratcher. Especially with the gaps especially at safety and linebacker. Thankfully few things truly disappear on the internet and the possibility that Tinker might be on defense at those need positions suddenly makes a bit more sense.

looks like a safety

Tinker has good size and speed for a safety and it would be especially nice to have a safety who has a good chance of catching the balls he can leap and get to. Tinker has been described as having very strong hands and the ability to catch balls beyond what is considered normal reach. No head scratching if that is what the thinking is…

According to Scout.com he is much bigger. Ht: 6-3 Wt: 215 40: 4.5 I’d love to see a wr on the field with good hands. Good size and speed for a safety or potential linebacker if not wide receiver. No head scratching here.

according to today’s Post-Gazette …. redshirt freshmen, Ron Hobby, is out academically for Sun Bowl, and PSU transfer, Josh Marks was dismissed for disciplinary reasons … both of them will very likely not re-join the team … thus presumedly freeing up 2 more scholarships for incoming recruits

Josh Marks was a walk-on, I don’t think he was on scholarship. But its not like there are any 4 or 5 star potential recruits on the horizon that are going to be denied.

I’ve seen that North Carolina Tech team, it is a good program, getting guys back into academics and the team is absolutely loaded with football talent. If Tinker can stay academically eligible, he’s a good pickup.

Marks was a walk-on but there was most probably a scholarship reserved for him for the upcoming year

So Marks becomes a bust at two schools…what a waste of talent…well now that kid can pay his own tuition bills. Stupid, really stupid.

NOTES — Freshman defensive back Ronald Hobby is the only player who is out for the Sun Bowl. Wannstedt said Hobby’s career is likely over due to his academic issues. …

His CAREER is likely over? Is he that bad academically?

What a shame, Pitt’s prized DB from last years recruiting class is done already. It’s not that hard to hit the books and show up to class kids!

I played football for Villanova, a smaller football program and better academic school, and let me tell you… ALL you have to do is show up for class. I can guarantee if he was just showing up for class and giving the appearance that he cared he wouldn’t be in this position. Professors will work with athletes. Its a shame some kids can’t even do the absolute minimum to keep themselves eligible

DugDog – Jarred Holley from Easton, PA is the “prized DB” from last year’s class. Holley had offers from PSU, Michigan, Florida, Virginia, Iowa and yes, Stanford – I don’t think he’ll be flunking out any time soon.

The names are so close it’s confusing. Hobby (the one who’s out at PITT) was also three stars but is not as highly regarded as Holley.
