Snap Judgments: Sun Bowl Situation

With thirtysomething bowls, every one does these quick hit previews or viewing guides to the bowls. Now, virtually standard. There’s the snap evaluation of the matchup:

Oregon State will win if. . . it does as coach Mike Riley put it, “we can’t whine about that anymore.” He is speaking of Oregon State’s painful 65-38 loss to Oregon that ruined a chance at the Rose Bowl. It also would help to have a healthy RB Jacquizz Rodgers, who ranks 13th nationally at 114 rushing yards per game.

Pitt will win if. . . Running back LeSean McCoy has the ball in his hands–a lot. He steps up in Pittsburgh’s biggest games. McCoy rushed for 183 and 148 in two games against rival West Virginia. He had 169 against Notre Dame. But McCoy also needs QB Bill Stull to be on target to keep defenses honest. The Panthers’ offense has been inconsistent all season, although Pitt has looked much better since that 4OT win over the Irish.

Er, yeah. The offense has been the model of consistency in the final games.

Then there’s looking at the most intriguing/interesting bowls.

10. Sun Bowl – Oregon State vs. No. 20 Pittsburgh, Dec. 31: This game features the best match-up of great young running backs as OSU’s Quizz Rodgers will try and outduel Pitt’s LeSean McCoy. This is also a fascinating sideline battle where you have one of the coaches that is always touted as one of the more underrated coaches (Mike Riley) facing off with one of the guys who is often the most skewered.

That’s the theme.

11. Sun (Dec. 31): Pittsburgh (9-3) vs. Oregon State (8-4). You like watching really good running backs? Allow me to present Pitt’s LeSean McCoy (1,403 yards, 21 TDs) and the Beavers’ Jacquizz Rodgers (1,253 yards, 11 TDs.)

Wondering what schwag the kids get for going to the Sun Bowl:

Sony DVD Handycam
Timely Watch Co. watch
Majestic fleece pullover, VP Sports cap
Armor Gear Dolly Llama luggage
Brut hair dryer

The cheapest remains the Motor City Bowl: a watch and a couple pieces of luggage. The max value on the gift packages is $500. A growing trend is to give a gift card or shopping spree — Best Buy seems to be doing a few of those.

Has anyone seen the number of recruits visiting Pitt over the next month. Coming up you have Dan Mason, the Merrel twins, and an intersting visit slated from Jordan Hill, who is committed to Rutgers. I see in January the QB from Texas is coming for a visit.

With only a few spots left, I wonder which of these kids are Pitt’s top priorities to land?

Comment by Winedogs 12.10.08 @ 10:21 am

also, malcolm bush a TE who decommited from Rutgers and is looking at Pitt and UNC.

Another ESPN list has the Sun Bowl at #8.

Comment by Dugdog 12.10.08 @ 11:22 am

The Pitt Panther Sports Blog is saying Kolby, the QB from Texas, now has Pitt as his #1 after Bennett’s visit.

Comment by Dugdog 12.10.08 @ 11:32 am

man if i was a qb.. pitt would be a decent place to go… we have a good stable of running backs… (chris burns is supposed to be solid). Our oline is getting better and better. The recievers are talented. I mean we are limted in the pass cuz of our qb personel. We are run heavy, but we take numerous shots down field. We just don’t have the qb to make the throws. If i was a highschool recruit, and watched pitt.. i would be like,, i can make that throw !

Comment by Snala the Panther 12.10.08 @ 12:56 pm

I agree Snala. Plus, it is a pro-style offense. NFL scouts hate guys that play in spread teams and want guys who can run Pro offenses. Cavanaugh does exactly that and all the coaches have NFL connections. Also, the pitt panther sports blog mentioned above has links to the all big east team announced today and Pitt is out on cheek.

Comment by Ontario Lett 's Go Pitt 12.10.08 @ 1:17 pm

Yeah, but can Kolby make those throws? Despite throwing for a ton of yards, he wasn’t exactly recruited by the heavyweights. I think Stull will be the starter next year then as a redshirt soph Sunseri will start in two years.

Comment by Mark 12.10.08 @ 1:19 pm

If Stull starts next year, we have to be perfect in all other aspects in order to win the conference. The Cincy game proved that we cannot rely on him one bit to quarterback us to a win.

Comment by Hollywood 12.10.08 @ 1:46 pm

It has to be Stull. Bostick and Smith are even worse and Pitt isn’t going to win the conference with Sunseri having no experience. He can be good down the road but he doesn’t have the talent to star right away.

Comment by Mark 12.10.08 @ 2:21 pm

I can see these DVD Handycams resurfacing for some Fulmer Cup (is it still the Fulmer Cup????) type activity on down the line – video evidence is never a good idea…

Comment by Greg in New Orleans 12.10.08 @ 2:33 pm

Has anyone actually watched Sunseri in practice? I wondered if he has any armstrengh. I think with quarterbacks, though, you can’t tell how good they really are until they are running the real offense instead of scout team.

Comment by Pat Bostick to the Sidelines Please 12.10.08 @ 2:51 pm

I remember the reports of Sunseri coming out of HS was that he had a very good arm.

Comment by Mark 12.10.08 @ 3:24 pm

“Dolly Llama” luggage? I’m not even particularly religious, much less Buddhist, but I find that offensive, or, at the very least, in questionable taste.

Comment by Pitt Pat 12.10.08 @ 3:34 pm

On the all-conference second team, does anybody know how the heck Aaron Berry showed up there ?

Comment by Snala the Panther 12.10.08 @ 4:27 pm

I think they used high school stats and film of Aaron Berry to make that pick.

Comment by maz. 12.10.08 @ 5:06 pm

Lists the whole team. Pat White’s dream of a three-peat snuffed out. Good work Donald Brown.

Comment by maz. 12.10.08 @ 5:07 pm

10 for Cincinnati (including Gilyard twice) and WVU, with Pitt’s 7 being the third most.

Comment by Mark 12.10.08 @ 5:16 pm

Snala, I’m as befuddled as you are. I guess it can’t be bad for the school though, just from a sheer numbers standpoint though. Berry was awful every time I watched him this year against decent competition.

Comment by Chris 12.10.08 @ 5:53 pm

I don’t think Berry was even the best corner on the team. I trust Chappel more.

Comment by Mark 12.10.08 @ 7:06 pm

I believe Berry was always assigned to tne best receiver, and a few of those wide-open TDS were the fault of the safeties. (BTW, I thought DeCicco had his best game vs UConn.)

Nonetheless, it is puzzling that Berry makes the team and Mick Williams didn’t.

Comment by wild Bill 12.10.08 @ 8:22 pm

Sunseri can throw, and he’ll win the QB comp next yr if it’s fair, but he’ll have to scramble a lot to get this throws off because he’s under 6 ft.

Comment by ricky jackson 12.11.08 @ 2:08 am

Hollywood – you said…

“If Stull starts next year, we have to be perfect in all other aspects in order to win the conference. The Cincy game proved that we cannot rely on him one bit to quarterback us to a win.”

You either have a very short memory, or just take the easy way out and agree with everything you read.

Bill Stull needs to get better no doubt – but it was on the strength of his play that we won the Louisville game, his play alone kept us close against RU (until he got hurt) and it was his two TD passes that secured our lead in the UCONN game.

IMO part of the constant criticism of Stull is that it’s the easy thing to do, and especially when you have the wonderful production by our RB to make average QB play look poor in comparison. Here’s an interesting stat for you – in the games McCoy didn’t get 100 yards rushing, we were 4-1. How did we compensate for that below par performance by McCoy offensively – those were some of the better games by Bill Stull.

Take a good look at the details of Stull’s year, not just the poor plays alone. For us frustrated as us fans are with Stull’s up and down play – I’ll bet DW feels differently about it. Stull did some things that before the season started DW stated he needed to see in the QB position.

As I said, he needs to get better and way more consistent with his play, but he also did some good things – so to say that he could never contribute to a win on the strength of his play alone isn’t really correct.

Comment by Reed 12.11.08 @ 4:09 am

Tribune-Review reports Pat Devlin transferring out of Penn State and will not go with the team to the Rose Bowl.

Comment by Reed 12.11.08 @ 4:14 am

Devlin must really want out, he would have to sit out a full season if he does indeed transfer to a D-1.

Comment by Rex 12.11.08 @ 7:18 am

Reed,
Excellent points. We know Stull isn’t the best QB in the world and did have a few really poor games, but that shouldn’t erase the fact that he was valuable to the team and had a large hand in many wins. And whoever earlier said Sunseri will win if it is a fair competition at QB, is a ridiculous comment. We have no way of knowing that, all people saw was Sunseri play in high school. I also highly doubt that will happen in a fair competition. That position, more than any is built on relationships and having a feel for where your guy will be, knowing the complete ins and outs of the systems, and making calls and reads. More than anywhere on the field this position necessitates someone who has been around and has a lot of experience with these things.

Comment by Yinzer 12.11.08 @ 9:16 am

Stull is our best option..right now. From what I hear of him, he is a hard worker, the guys respect him, and he plays hurt. I have to believe that he will work hard this off season to improve. And lets face it, this was his first year as a starter we should cut some slack. I hate to say it but I’ve sort of given up on Bostick. I think he is fine as a backup but can’t ever see him leading a top 15 team.

Comment by Rex 12.11.08 @ 9:27 am

I don’t think there is any doubt that the concussion set back Stull’s progression. He was having his best game against Rutger’s when he was injured, coming off two other good games vs USF & Navy. He hasn’t been near the same since although his 2nd half vs UConn provides some hope.

Comment by wild Bill 12.11.08 @ 9:43 am

Agree with many of the previous comments: Stull certainly deserved some criticism for his play down the stretch, but I think many fans were a little too Harsh. And calling for Bostick or Sunseri is not really fair.

I think the thing that people need to realize more than anything else is that this was Stull’s first year as a starter. He made a ton of mistakes but he also made some plays. Its very clear that the team respects him and sees him as a leader and that also cannot be overstated. I think the concussion really set him back and hopefully the extra month of practice leading up to the Sun Bowl and the extra game this season coupled with a productive spring can allow him to develop into a better player next season.

Comment by TJ 12.11.08 @ 10:13 am

Why does every discussion end up turning into a discussion of Stull at QB vs. other ridiculous alternatives to Stull at QB?

Comment by Pat Bostick to the Sidelines Please 12.11.08 @ 11:56 am

what has stull really done this yr that any other qb could not do whith the weapons around him. next yr will be his 5th yr in the system, so i expected more out of him then what we got, it may be his 1st yr starting, but he has been in the system for 4 yrs all ready.Stull has no accuracy at all on the deep ball, he just throws it up for grabs, usually to the other team, i dont care who pitt puts in at qb, as long as they can manage it with shady in the backfield and not lose any games by int or etc…

Comment by mike 12.11.08 @ 1:21 pm

Mike, a few points.

If it was as easy as “just being in the system” then that is a major revalation. There is no comparison to playing in a game at full speed with pressure, in front of a crowd and national tv audiance. There are lots of NFL qb’s that have been in systems for years, even decades, yet cant make it as a starter.

Bostick and Smith looked terrible, so obviously you cant just put anyone in at QB with the weapons we have. And dont forget Bostick was Mr PA everything coming out of HS, had a full year of starts under his belt, a full season to workout, learn the playbook, and he still looked aweful – and by all accounts he worked very hard in the offseason.

By all accounts, Stull did appear to be steadily improving as the year went on, then he was noticably worse after the concussion. For a first year starter who was a little banged up most of the year, I think he deserves the benefit of the doubt. I was as disappointed with his play late in the year as everyone else was but here is the bottom line: I am giving him the benefit of the doubt and hoping he works hard this off season and he is our BEST OPTION.

Comment by Rex 12.11.08 @ 1:47 pm

It all comes back to Stull because who knows where this team might be if we had just an average quarterback. If Palko were on this team, I’m willing to bet we’re BCS bound right now. It’s just frustrating to see such a good defense and running game wasted because the QB can’t throw anything accurate down the field.

Comment by Jake 12.11.08 @ 1:48 pm

Palko didn’t have much in the way of arm strength. Our record is better under Stull then it was the year Palko took us to a BCS game. Again, receivers have dropped many critical balls. Why don’t they receive any of the blame from you? I distinctly remember several Kinder dropped balls in the Cinci game. Baldwin missed a deep ball that he had a chance at in the Cinci game. Porter dropped a 17 yard comeback route in the WVU game. Turner has had many drops, including a 3rd down in the fourth quarter of the UConn game. These plays are absolute drive killers. I haven’t heard an ounce of criticism for these plays compared to the criticism for Stull’s short throw to Conredge Collins on 4th down in the WVU game.

Comment by Pat Bostick to the Sidelines Please 12.11.08 @ 9:24 pm

I agree that the concussion knocked Stull off course for a few games, but he looked very good in the second half versus UConn — especially that perfect throw to Byham. He’s a smart, tough kid and he’ll be good in the Sun Bowl and next year. Any chance Devlin transfers to Pitt?

Comment by Matt N. 12.11.08 @ 10:29 pm

A few points… The discussion always comes around to the QB play because, well… that’s what football fans always talk about.

I crack up when I read “with average QB play we would be in a BCS bowl”. We had three frigging losses this season! You can’t put the BG loss on Stull – not with the poor coaching choices, the four fumbles, McCoy rushing for 3.0 yards a carry and the defense giving up 27 points to a MAC school. Honestly, if we had to point to one kid as the reason we lost that game, I’ll say McCoy should get the call more than Stull. Stull had 29 completions for 264 yards in that game.

The RU loss was in no way due to Stull’s play – in fact he’s the reason it was close in the beginning of the second half until his injury knocked him out. The play we saw from our QB in that game was the best we’d seen in four years.

Perhaps the Cincy game. But I don’t entirely buy that. Not when an opposing QB scrambles around and passes for a million yards and three TDs at will. Hell, Pike was 81% passing and averaged 12 yards per completion! Sorry, but that loss falls squarely on our defense IMO. Stull should have played better, and his poor play contributed but when you have a total of 35 yards rushing that’s tough to overcome.

So – maybe that’s one game you can point to the QB play as being a major cause for losing. Hell, every team has that happen in a season.

As to “If Palko were on this team…” OK, I’ll counter with “If Revis was on this team…” Of course, both thoughts are wishful thinking anyway.

How’s this – with Palko our QB play would have looked prettier, but we still probably would have won 9 games. After all – you just have to look at the Ohio game a few years back if you want a perfect example of how a QB can lose a game by himself.

Comment by Reed 12.12.08 @ 5:03 am

the only objection I have with Reed’s comments is that Palko had no running games and two starting offensive linemen hurt during that Ohio game, and his best receiver that year was a 5’7 soph walk-on.

The clear asset that Palko has over Stull is improvisation when being pressured – Stull has little mbility and rarely connected on a hot read.

Similarly, Pike’s abaility to make a play when it appeared that he was going to be sacked or have to throw the ball away permeated throughout the game — he is a playmaker — remember that 98 yard drive … it was all him!

Stull can be a real effective QB when not being pressured but that is defintiely the rub!!

Comment by wild Bill 12.12.08 @ 9:31 am

Palko’s BCS team also had essentially no running game. Certainly not a running game anywhere comparable to what it is today. It’s a moot point, because Stull is the QB, but I still think this team wins more games with a better QB. Stull may not have been directly responsible for those losses, but his play certainly didn’t help all that much. And scoring on one drive changes the dynamic of the entire rest of the game, so you can’t just say “oh, well we lost by this many points, so it wouldn’t have mattered”.

Like I said, it’s a moot point and just nit-picking, but I really wish this team had a solid QB.

Comment by Jake 12.12.08 @ 11:01 am

Cheek picks Villanova (link to sportsillustrated.cnn.com).

Devlin is transferring to a D-II school so he doesn’t have to sit out. Probably Delaware, a la Flacco.

Comment by matt 12.12.08 @ 11:46 am

Delaware isn’t D-2.

Comment by TJ 12.12.08 @ 11:52 am

My bad…1-AA (or FCS as its now called), not 2

Comment by matt 12.12.08 @ 1:05 pm

Damn, I was really hoping Cheek would come to Pitt, even though it was a super long shot. And if he decided not to come here, I was hoping he would stay out of the Big East! Jay Wright has been doing some decent recruiting, if he keeps it up Villanova just might establish itself as yet another Big East power.

I like the fact that Pitt seems to be on the radar of these blue chip recruits, but it’s a shame that we always seem to come up a bit short.

Comment by Jake 12.12.08 @ 2:12 pm

not true that Stull didn’t hit hot reads. Many games he continually checked down to the back or other hot options

Comment by Pat Bostick to the Sidelines Please 12.12.08 @ 2:22 pm

We finally picked up a blue-chipper this year in Taylor. He should be a McDonald’s All-American. But yes, its nice to see us at least involved in some of these battles.

Comment by TJ 12.12.08 @ 2:23 pm

Lamar Patterson a forward and espn100 recruit is also in next year’s class.

Comment by TJ 12.12.08 @ 2:28 pm

Although it probably happened, I honestly don’t remember one (NOT ONE) occasion all year when Stull completed a pass when on the run that wasn’t a planned rollout. I think he is a fine QB .. he seems to make many correct reads and looks for secondary receivers, etc. .. it is just that he cannot make something out of nothng. And I certainly don’t believe that all (which wasn’t much) that went wrong this year is attributable to him.

The fact is that when you don’t have an overpowering o-line (like Oklahoma), you neede more than just a game manager for QB to put over the top … in other words, I believe that Cincey would have not have won the BE with Stull at QB but Pitt may have with Pike.

Comment by wild Bill 12.12.08 @ 3:06 pm

If Devlin transferred to Pitt, could he not sit out one year and then play two years after Stull graduates? If I was him, I’d rather play a major college schedule and get on tv then play at Delaware — no disrespect to the blue hens…despite that name…and since when do blue hens and wolverines look the same…I think wolverines eat blue hens probably. They should just have a big blue chicken in cleats on their helmut, huh? “Hut Hut Bakawwwk!!”

Comment by Matt N. 12.12.08 @ 4:19 pm

Defending the few plays Stull made this year reminds me of the Chris Rock routine about dudes wanting credit for taking care of their kids…….something you’re supposed to do anyway.

Stull made a few good throws in the Rutgers game and played OK against L-ville, but those examples are things QBs are SUPPOSED TO DO.

His throw to Byham against UConn is another example. He’s SUPPOSED TO make that throw.

When we have to pick pieces of games and individual throws as examples of things Stull did well this year……….that tells how said the QB-ing situation has been.

Sunseri has a way better arm than Stull and is way more mobile. (I’m not even going to mention Bostick and Smith……hopeless.) Does that mean Sunseri deserves the job next year? NO, of course not. But it means he possesses the two most necessary physical tools to be able to do things IN ADDITION TO the things you’re supposed to do. Don’t know if he’s got the mental part, but I hope it’s a fair competition because beating out Bill Stull isn’t exactly like trying to beat out Dan Marino or Palko or even anybody halfway competent.

Comment by hugh green 12.12.08 @ 6:05 pm

Hugh Green – you are entirely correct that making good passes and contributing to the offense to produce wins is what a QB is supposed to do. Also, you’re correct that Stull didn’t do that enough this season. I don’t think that any fan that is defending Stull is also saying that he played real well – at least I’m not.

What irks me is that in the rush to point to Bill Stull as the reason we “aren’t a BCS team” – which I’ve read probably 25 times on here and on message boards – no detractor actually has sat down and taken a good look at how the season, and the team’s actual play, really played out. There are a lot of reasons we aren’t in a BCS game, Stull’s play is only one facet of that situation. Personally I think our defense has a lot more to answer for in our three losses than Bill Stull does – but I also know that everyone plays well sometimes, and poorly sometimes – that’s sports. But if you read some fans posts about Stull’s play you’d think the kid never had any success at all on the field this season – and that’s just not true.

What I’m concerned about the most is the difference between his practice play and his game play. From all reports he tears it up when practicing. That is disturbing in the sense that it points to things other than his actual physical abilities as the reason for his play on Saturdays.

I’m all for an open competition at QB, and for anyone who can rise up and grab the starter’s spot to do so. Honestly, Stull disappointed this season , in that there is no debate.

Comment by Reed 12.13.08 @ 5:11 am

Totally agree that saying Pitt’s not a BCS team because of Stull is ridiculous. Also agree that the defense (secondary) has as many issues as the QB play does.

I have a tough time believing the reports about practice play vs game play.

As you are, I’m just hoping for a fair competition next year. I’ve been surprised all year how low our expectations were for Stull and QB play in general. I was so tired of hearing about how all Pitt needed was a “game manager” and how it was OK that Stull didn’t have a great arm or good mobility because he could run the offense without those things. The fact is, it’s pretty tough to run a D1 offense without those tools.

Let’s raise our expectations for the play at the most important position on the field.

Comment by hugh green 12.13.08 @ 11:51 am

The fact is Pitt was pretty mediocre the last bunch of years, so not easy to recruit the best QB in the nation exactly…baby steps. We’ve been getting better and now look like we are poised to get very good, potentially. If we have a strong showing in the Sun Bowl, some blue chip high school QBs around the country will sit up and take notice — I think this is how it works, and you can’t just get an all-american type QB to accept your offer because he likes the campus or the cheerleaders. I was frustrated that we weren’t better than average the last three years, but Wannstedt’s recruiting is paying off now and we’ve reached a point where 9-3 is the least we expect — think Michigan would have liked that record this year?

Comment by Matt N. 12.13.08 @ 1:09 pm

in response to throwing the corner route to byham in the UConn game is something your supposed to do..
So is getting to the quarterback as a defensive lineman on almost every pass play (except for screens), so is catching every ball you get your hands on as a receiver. Almost every offensive play is designed to succeed if everyone does there job. Yet every defensive scheme is designed to succeed if everyone does their job.

The fact is, those plays aren’t always made. That’s what separates winning and losing. Stull threw a perfect pass to Byham, and yeah it was his job. But don’t belittle it as not making a play. You can certainly continue to criticize and nitpick at the quarterback position. It’s the most easily criticizable position for all Monday morning quarterbacks.

We know Stull isn’t an awesome quarterback. But he doesn’t suck by any means. So what are your expectations for him at quarterback. What plays does he have to make for satisfaction from some fans since throwing touchdowns is simply his job and shouldn’t be praised.

Comment by Chicken Little 12.13.08 @ 3:58 pm

The whole practice of Monday Morning quarterbacking exists because that position is so much more important than any other on the field.

Stull should make throws like the one to Byham consistently. Nice throw……..but it should be almost routine for a D1 QB……..and by routine I mean it should be something that we see happening game after game. (I don’t mean that exact throw……I just mean throws like that.) We remember that play (and a couple other completions) because there weren’t that many pretty plays made between QB and receivers this year. Baldwin’s early catches were mostly him reacting to questionable throws and making plays. Besides that (and the one throw to Kinder), it’s hard to remember Stull hitting guys in stride for big gains.

I’m all in favor of praising TDs and giving credit on a good play, but we didn’t see many of those plays this year from the passing game. The offense scored most of their points because McCoy was incredible.

So my expectations — consistency in the passing game and some mobility. Stull couldn’t seem to get a consistent passing game going this year and couldn’t move to escape the rush.

Comment by hugh green 12.14.08 @ 10:08 am

can we stop arguing about this it’s a waste of time. Stull gets more criticism and less credit then he deserves I believe. But for those who disagree its a moot point. He is the only option, so you can raise your own expectations as high as you want, whatever that might mean, but it doesn’t make a difference in what Pitt does. I’m sure the kid expects more of himself as well, as does any competitor. He’s a tough, hard working kid and will imporve. But no point in arguing, he is the best option currently.
