Going Live For Pitt-UConn

You really didn’t think I’d skip liveblogging this did you?

One slight change, I’m going to be a little more aggressive at moderating comments. What I mean by that is, when there is a play and say six people all type “wow” or “tackle” or essentially the same comment within a couple seconds of each other, I’m not going to approve them all. It’s nothing personal, it just creates clutter. I’ll approve one or two but not all of them. Hopefully it will allow things to flow better.

Still haven’t figured out why CIL’s “iframe” won’t embed on my blog. If anyone has any skill with this send me an e-mail to explain how I can make it work.

Otherwise, you will find the liveblog starting around noon right here.

Between the censored comments and that crap freezing up…its time to go back to the old way of commenting..

How come everytime we try to run a trick play, the guy is open but we fail miserably at the execution?

Comment by Stuart 12.06.08 @ 12:53 pm

Stull is GARBAGE! Get a real qb. Stull sucks, he has no business getting a free ride through school for this. Maybe he should go out and get one more spiderweb tatto on his arm. Concussion or not, our offense (with all of its talent) deserves better than this clown.

Comment by hail2pitt 12.06.08 @ 1:29 pm

This is what you get with a one dimensional offense……3-3 at the half. Thank goodness Uconn is as one dimensional as we are.

Comment by ltl 12.06.08 @ 1:40 pm

Yes the QB play as been awful thus far, but this whole offense has completely crapped the bed today. So I don’t really think they ‘deserve better’. The o-line can’t open a hole to save their life. Their is no pocket for the QB to step into most of the half because the center and guards are getting blown into the backfield, and Baldwin doesn’t attack the ball when we do throw it up to him. Collins fumbles on not even a big hit. There is no attention to detail across the board right now and there is no emotion. Placing full blame on the QB is ridiculous when this type of play is happening across the board on the offense.

Comment by Froot Luips 12.06.08 @ 1:44 pm

thank you froot luips for bringing some level-headed discussion back to this board.
Please, before you post absolutely negative posts (or unwarranted ridiculously elated posts) just take a step back and take a realistic approach as froot luips just has done.

Good half time adjustments offensively with the play action passing. Touchdowns happen when the other team starts defending us as a one dimensional team.

Stull is not GARBAGE. he’s just what we keep saying every week- a decent first year QB. Makes mistakes and makes some plays.

Defense is doing a pretty good job slowing down Donald Brown. Most importantly, we’re making plays!

i think that announcers should stop comparing Baldwin to Fitzgerald. he doesn’t have fitzgerald’s ball skills but maybe we’ll see some skills that he has and fitzy lacked (if fitzy lacked any skills)

Comment by Chicken Little 12.06.08 @ 2:43 pm

I did go over the top with my comments on Stull, and I will now insert my foot in my mouth. Thank you guys for showing me how stupid I sound. I still feel Stull is a below average qb, but I give him credit for trying.

Sah-weet, 9-3, Sun Bowl!!!

Comment by Dugdog 12.06.08 @ 3:18 pm

Stull was much, much improved from the 1st to 2nd halves.

Comment by Dugdog 12.06.08 @ 3:20 pm

While UConn is not a great team, it is still nice to beat a decent, bowl bound team on the road, especially when they have given us fits in the past few years. 9-3 and a Sun Bowl berth isn’t to shaby!

Comment by hail2pitt 12.06.08 @ 3:22 pm

Congrats to our Panthers on a nice season! Viva El Paso

Comment by Rex 12.06.08 @ 3:25 pm

Great third quarter by Stull, as the coaches gave him plays he does well on — seam routes and intermediate play action stuff…looked great. But they still get too conservative handing the ball off with not much of a lead — need to get that killer instinct and go for touchdowns more. Front seven playing like men — all season really. Overall good game, with flashes of excellence.

Comment by Matt N. 12.06.08 @ 4:33 pm

The cheapest Sun Bowl tickets are $15. Even if you are not going, buy a four-pack of tickets and donate them to a local El Paso school or to the men and women stationed at a nearby military base. $60 to help dispel the Pitt-doesn’t-travel nonsense? Come on people. Cowboy up. (And also, drop the relatively cheap travel costs and go yourself!)

Great second half. At this point we shouldn’t be surprised to see this team finish games. They’ve really done it all year.

Stull played, in the second half, like he is capable of playing. Like it or not, he’s our best shot at success. He’s not good enough to make up for blown protection by the line or dropped balls by our WR’s but he is capable of making plays especially when the opposing defense starts stacking the box.

nice end to a very good season.

Hail to Pitt.

Comment by TJ 12.06.08 @ 5:53 pm

Hey, Maz…

I would like to do what you suggest. Do you have any suggestions on how to go about donating the tix, or are there instructions on the Sun Bowl site for how to do that?

Good win. A strange game. I am watching it via DVR as I type, and can’t say “wow, what a great all around game.” Front 7 was awesome, Cavanaugh finally figured out that maybe some play action might get the offensive somewhere in the second half.

I’ll be elated if he does come back, but I really don’t know why Shady would want to come back. I can’t imagine the frustration of being so talented and playing for two such mediocre-to-subpar coaches as Wannstedt and Cavanaugh.

But I’ll take 9-3 and an NYE bowl and some individual players with some great performances. Nice to have a respectable season.

Comment by Carmen 12.06.08 @ 10:32 pm

Carmen – don’t project you negativity and pessimism onto LeSean McCoy, he’s perfectly capable of thinking, and making decisions, for himself.

McCoy obviously does not hold the same opinions of Dave Wannstedt as you do, that’s apparent in every quote we’ve heard from him, and he’s gone so far as to say that DW is the big reason he not only came to PITT, but why wants to play a third year here.

I find it strange that on the day that PITT finished the best regular season the program has had in 26 years – you choose to denigrate the Head Coach.

Enjoy your ulcers – you’ve earned them…

Comment by Reed 12.07.08 @ 4:43 am

Lmao @ Reed. You never cease to make me laugh.

Comment by Dugdog 12.07.08 @ 8:04 am

Carmen,

The best option on the website is “Take a soldier to the game” ( link to sunbowl.org ). However, that requires you to donate at least 20 tickets. The nice thing is that it gives them to you for less than face value (20 tix for $250 = 12.50 per ticket) but that’s still a lot of money for most people in this economy. If you do one of their donate options by Dec. 10, you get into the game program as a donor.

The nearest base is Fort Bliss. ( link to bliss.army.mil ) They have a contact us option that includes a phone number. I have yet to call them, but it seems to me that they would have a way to accept donations.

El Paso High School listings can be found here: ( link to schoolsk-12.com ). Conveniently, they list the schools’ average median home prices. Thus, if, like me, you’d like to give to the less-privileged areas, you can figure out where the least-valuable houses are and get in touch with those schools.

If anyone does any of the above, it would be nice to hear reports of what works and what doesn’t. I know that times are tough for everyone, but if you can spare it, it would be a great way to brighten the day of some soldiers/students and also support Pitt athletics.

Comment by maz. 12.07.08 @ 11:47 am

Thanks, Maz. I’ll see what I can work out in the next day or so.

Reed, I don’t have ulcers, although I do have regular reflux. Since you’re so concerned about my health, I’ll post my LDL, HDL, and triglycerides later.

What I’d like to see for Shady is a long, successful NFL career. Maybe Shady is absolutely sincere in what he says about Wannstedt, etc., but I think it’s just as likely that he is doing exactly what he has always done in his time at Pitt: be the consummate team player and NEVER even venture near a critical statement of a Pitt coach or teammate.

My criticisms of Wanny and Cavanaugh are not unique and are not meant to in any way denigrate what this team has accomplished this season. I’m thrilled that this team has had success and hope that Wanny has actually learned some things from this season and will continue to evolve as a coach, so if Shady does indeed comeback, it’s worth the huge potential risks he is taking. Shady seems like too good of a guy to enjoy anything but the greatest success possible in his football career.

Comment by Carmen 12.07.08 @ 10:02 pm

You can’t only look at the risk. There is tremendous upside to Shady returning. Potentially winning a Heisman trophy and being a top pick (b/c he isn’t quite there yet) in next year’s draft. Not to mention you can take out insurance on yourself to prevent financial loss should you incur a serious injury.
Bet the farm on it, Shady will be back.
