I’ll be watching, but probably pausing a lot throughout to deal with kids. So, no liveblog for this game. Just feel free to comment on what you are seeing.

lets go pitt.

it doesn’t sound like either station has the game online

Comment by foursnow 11.17.08 @ 7:22 pm

Damn. I didn’t notice that the excerpt from two posts ago said the game would be on tape delay in the DC-Baltimore region. I just turned on MASN expecting to see it, and instead I’m getting a half hour show re-hashing just how badly the Ravens got blown out by the Giants yesterday.

Not that that doesn’t have some entertainment value, but still…I’d rather be watching Pitt.

Comment by Jeff 11.17.08 @ 7:24 pm

Our defense looks better than last year…i mean, its really early, but i like what i see….

Comment by Stuart 11.17.08 @ 7:24 pm

Our FT shooting could improve…still…

Comment by Stuart 11.17.08 @ 7:26 pm

Wannamakers man drains a 3, then he turns it over on offense, for 2 more…no wonder Fields is yelling at him… Looks like he still has room to improve…

Comment by Stuart 11.17.08 @ 7:32 pm

Pitt has some issues without Blair on the floor.

Also, why does Fields insist on shooting stepback threes from just inside halfcourt?

Comment by Chris 11.17.08 @ 7:33 pm

I guess i’m the only one here so i’ll keep talking to myself…

…not sure how that was a foul on Young…two guys going for a ball run into each other?

Comment by Stuart 11.17.08 @ 7:34 pm

Calling this game pretty tight, not the way we like it…and how about 2 offensive goaltending calls that were missed?

Whats sad is that we’re being out rebounded…

Comment by Stuart 11.17.08 @ 7:41 pm

Stuart — I can’t get a live feed on video or radio, so keep it up. Watching the little lines on CBS’ gamecast isn’t all that exciting.

Comment by maz. 11.17.08 @ 7:44 pm

Holy shit how are we giving them any looks from 3? That’s all they shoot, that’s their only chance….stop sagging off your men…

Comment by Stuart 11.17.08 @ 7:45 pm

We look really soft on the glass without Blair. The young guys have all had flashes of brilliance, but I feel like each is tempered by a bad turnover or lax defense.

And if Nasir misses one more gimme, I may break my TV.

Comment by Chris 11.17.08 @ 7:47 pm

So CBS has the halftime score 35-30 and Sam Young with 2 pts. Is that right? It seems impossible…

Comment by maz. 11.17.08 @ 7:52 pm

We’re turning the ball over way too much, especially the younger guys. That and getting out rebounded is killing us. For those that can’t see it…

– they’re crashing the boards on their shots and we’re not boxing out. I think they realized the only way to stay in this game is to out work us. They’ve had 2 offensive goaltending buckets that weren’t called already.

– we’re very sloppy with the ball. On the second to last offensive series, feilds tried passing the ball to Nas who didn’t come to the ball, just stood flat footed, a defender came over his back and swatted the ball back to fields. Fields got pissed off and went playground, dribbled all over for 10 seconds before driving right down the lane and throwing up a layup while getting destroyed (not called)… The last play fields missed the entire bucket on his 3…way off, didn’t make any sense at all.

– as i said above, we’re collapsing for no reason, we have guys just hoping if they get a little closer to the lane maybe they can strip the ball, and instead are leaving their men wide open for 3…Young did this one time i remember, a few others 2. Which makes little sense, because half their points seem to be 3s.

I think we went up big, then started getting a little lazy thinking that they’re not very good, and have been getting out worked since.

Comment by Stuart 11.17.08 @ 7:58 pm

I forgot about Nas missing all but 1 layup…unreal.

I’m not sure how Young has 2 points, cause he made a wide open bucket off an inbounds, and then made a layup + 1…he has at least 4 or 5. He also missed a wide open shot or two as i recall, but he hasn’t had the ball in his hands a lot, and when he has, they’ve been trying to strip it, which has been effective in either getting turnovers or getting him to give up the ball.

Comment by Stuart 11.17.08 @ 8:00 pm

We’ve been outrebounded 8 to 3 on the offensive glass…yikes. And they’ve converted several of those, thats why its so close.

Comment by Stuart 11.17.08 @ 8:02 pm

This about this: 19-7, blair sits with 2 fouls, since then, we’ve been outscored 23-16.

Comment by Stuart 11.17.08 @ 8:04 pm

Comment by Dave in Orlando 11.17.08 @ 8:05 pm

Fields sags off his man for 3…
Wannamaker gets burned by 3…then turns the ball over which leads to 2 more in transition…
No boxing out, offensive goaltending not called, 2 more…
Young misses wide open 3…
Woodall falls for shot fake, gets in air, and destroys his man…2 FTs…
Young gets ball stripped, but gets block on other end…
Fields gets called for chippy push…2 FTs…
Young leaves his man wide open, sagging to lane, for 3…
Nas misses easy layup, then we allow 2 offensive rebounds and a stickback cause no one is blocking out…

Thats how the end of the first half went…now i’m about 9 min behind so i’ll have to catchup…

Comment by Stuart 11.17.08 @ 8:14 pm

It seems to hinge on Blair.

Comment by steve 11.17.08 @ 8:16 pm

Dixon made a wide open 3, but then missed a wide open 3…no one near him.

On the other end, we gave up another offensive rebound, but they missed an easy layup….

Some kid thought he was in acting school and got called for the flop…we ran an inbounds play for Young to drain a jumper…

Dixon gets another wide open 3 and drains it…he faked the screen, the blair set screen instead, and he popped out…

Comment by Stuart 11.17.08 @ 8:20 pm

Stuart was correct. ESPN has young at 5pts.

Comment by PittDieHard 11.17.08 @ 8:20 pm

The third illegal screen called on them tonight…

Young decides to take over with his running hook…twice…he goes for the steal on the next play and tips it out of bounds…

Comment by Stuart 11.17.08 @ 8:22 pm

Camera doesn’t come back in time, someone stole the ball on the inbounds…we get a layup…

We seem to be better on the boards so far…only 1 offensive rebound given up so far…

Biggs gets lost in transition, his man drains an open 3…

Biggs rolls towards basket but Fields and him are not on the same page, ball goes flying out of bounds…

I’m still behind…trying to catch up at commercials…

Comment by Stuart 11.17.08 @ 8:25 pm

Omar, you’re right. These kids need a lot of work.

Comment by steve 11.17.08 @ 8:25 pm

We’re doubling the post sometimes, it seems to be random to keep them off balance…we rotate in time (Woodall i think?) and he tips the ball out of bounds…they have to hoist a quick 3 as shot clock running out…

Nas picks up his dribble and we have to call a time out cause no one comes to him…

Comment by Stuart 11.17.08 @ 8:26 pm

Stuart, Chris and others who are relaying the live action – – – Thanks from those of us who will only get it on tape delay @ 1 AM.

Comment by C 11.17.08 @ 8:30 pm

Inbounds play to blair in the lane, one dribble, layup + 1…

we’re up by 20 now…

Gibbs gets rebound, throws it away to them cause he gets trapped on baseline, but Woodall gets back in the play, draws offensive foul on them before they can make layup…

We piss around for a long time, Woodall has to shoot a 40 ft shot with 2 on the clock, almost banks it in…

Wannamaker leaves his man open by a mile, but he misses the most wide open shot (3) of the game.

Woodall gets rebound, tries to go “fields” on them and dribbles ball off his foot in the lane…they come back in transititon and draw a foul on a layup attempt…

Comment by Stuart 11.17.08 @ 8:31 pm

Defense will keep us more than competitive against anyone.

Comment by steve 11.17.08 @ 8:34 pm

So does Wannamaker continue to look completely overmatched on both ends? Cus that was a delightful development last year, as he made zero progress and played with a permanent deer-in-headlights look on his face.

Comment by maz. 11.17.08 @ 8:34 pm

Sorry i’m behind, for once there are not enough commericals…

they make their 2 FTS…

Fields almost turns it over feeding the post, but its batted back to him, he then sees a wide open Gibbs for 3…

They attempt to post up and shoot over Blair, doesn’t work out at all…

Fields goes “duke shot”

they miss wide open 3 cause fields playing off his man, blair throws the homerun ball to fields who tips it to Nas? for an easy layup…

They are now trying to trap in the backcourt, we get around it, and one of our guys runs over someone on way to basket…offensive foul…

They try to post Blair again, 4 shotfakes, then finally travel…

Comment by Stuart 11.17.08 @ 8:35 pm

I just got home. So much for Miami of Ohio scaring my pants off. Can anyone give me a quick summary of what we looked like tonight? I see that we are up by 22.

Comment by Panthoor 11.17.08 @ 8:36 pm

BTW, good work Stuart. Thanks for posting that for us 🙂

Comment by Panthoor 11.17.08 @ 8:37 pm

Wannamaker still looks slow.

Blair misses jump shot, not sure why he took it…missed rim…

They get a layup on the other end, defensive breakdown in lane.

Fields misses a 3, blair misses a runnning hook shot (not sure why he’s shooting either of these two shots…trying to be Young?)

On the other end we don’t box out and they get tip in…not sure who’s man.

Biggs gets open for 3…drains it.

Biggs reaches in…stupid foul on block.

Comment by Stuart 11.17.08 @ 8:38 pm

Panthoor: Defense, Blair, lots of nice 3’s.

Comment by steve 11.17.08 @ 8:40 pm

5 boards for Travon??? Stat-sheet suggests he’s looking good.

Comment by maz. 11.17.08 @ 8:40 pm

We’re out rebounding them by 13 7 in the second half…

Biggs leaves his man for no reason, but luckily he misses a wide open 3…

Young powers his way down low, 3 guys guarding him, he goes up strong for a layup + 1….

67-42 now…

Comment by Stuart 11.17.08 @ 8:41 pm

That’s what I like to hear. Take that UCLA.

Comment by Panthoor 11.17.08 @ 8:41 pm

Big rebounding edge for us in the second half.

Comment by Dave in Orlando 11.17.08 @ 8:43 pm

Woodall has looked good when in control, a few times he plays loose with the ball…he’ll get better i’m sure.

I’m more concerned with Wannamaker, and to a lesser extent Biggs, cause i’m not sure what he’s doing on defense a lot of the time.

4.5 min left and we took out Young…fields and blair have been sitting… Dixon, woodall, biggs, mcghee, wannamaker now…

Comment by Stuart 11.17.08 @ 8:44 pm

Biggs drives off of offensive rebound for double clutch layup + 1….

Gibbs too excited trying to block a 3 from about a mile and a half away when shot clock is running out and fouls his man for 3 FTs…

Comment by Stuart 11.17.08 @ 8:46 pm

I just saw the stats and Fields has 12 points and 12 assists. That’s a heck of a night! give that man a high five and some painkillers for his still aching foot.

Comment by Panthoor 11.17.08 @ 8:48 pm

2 missed FTs – – – finally.

Comment by C 11.17.08 @ 8:49 pm

Wannamaker throws it away again trying to feed mcghee in the post…jesus…

Dixon anticipates pass at top of key and takes it the other way for a layup…

Wannamakers man burns him on a curl to hoop, causes mcghee to step up and foul…

Nas in for Biggs…

Gibbs gets ball stolen from him when lazily dribbling at top of key…we get dunked on…

Gibbs draws foul on jump shot…

Comment by Stuart 11.17.08 @ 8:50 pm

Our white kids are in.

Comment by Stuart 11.17.08 @ 8:51 pm

seems like the young kids are taking over!

Comment by PittDieHard 11.17.08 @ 8:53 pm

And all without Gilbert Brown. HAIL TO PITT!

Comment by steve 11.17.08 @ 8:54 pm

I could nitpick about some things, but it is, after all, the second game of the year.

Impressive second half and margin of victory against a decent mid-major. I’m optimistic about this team…

Comment by Chris 11.17.08 @ 8:54 pm

Guys, thanks for your play-by-plays. Here in Jersey, no TV and I can’t get the radio broadcast. The box scores do not reveal much. Your play-by-play comments are much appreciated.

Comment by BigGuy 11.17.08 @ 8:56 pm

Big-time thanks to Stuart for the running commentary, it made flashing between gamecasts a lot more interesting. Looks like things went pretty well after a brief glitch in the first half when we took our foot off of the gas pedal. Time for the Zips!

Comment by maz. 11.17.08 @ 8:57 pm

Biggs with the three. Jamie was like NOOOOOOO-yesss.

Comment by PittDieHard 11.17.08 @ 8:58 pm

UCLA barely escaped with a 5 point win over these guys. We won by almost 30 so that is enough to make me feel good tonight. Does it look like Dixon has won that SG spot? He has done well in my opinion.

Comment by Panthoor 11.17.08 @ 8:59 pm

Now we get to hear the Miami coach say how much better we were than UCLAnus.

Comment by PittDieHard 11.17.08 @ 9:00 pm

I love the way Jamie recruits.

Comment by BigGuy 11.17.08 @ 9:01 pm

Man we must be at the bottom of the bench. Who is Tiesi, the equipment guy?

Comment by PittDieHard 11.17.08 @ 9:01 pm

Listened to the game via Miami feed. Midway through the second half one of the announcers said that Pitt was way better than UCLA. They were impressed with Pitt’s D. Also their best player did not make one field goal.

Comment by Kenny 11.17.08 @ 9:03 pm

I was impressed with how well Dixon shot the 3, considering his shooting percentages in JUCO…

I should be able to comment a ton on Friday too, i think the games on FSN…if it is, i’ll be watching it.

PS. This blog has bipolar disorder…half the time i’m getting bitched at for commenting too much…

Comment by Stuart 11.17.08 @ 9:05 pm

Tiesi is some white kid that transferred from some shitt college either last spring or for this year…i know he played all summer in the summer league…

Overall, the team looks good for this early. As the younger kids get better and protect the ball better…well, things are looking up…

Comment by Stuart 11.17.08 @ 9:07 pm

Stuart, from this prospective, you are definitely not commenting too much.

Comment by BigGuy 11.17.08 @ 9:08 pm

Stuart, you tackled an almost impossible task without the benefit of little cartoon characters. Thanks.

Comment by steve 11.17.08 @ 9:11 pm

I didn’t get the game so reading comments on the game was fine by me. I don’t mind the double posting since this isn’t a forum type of place and some of us couldn’t watch tonight. For those that commented on the game, your cookies are in the mail.

Comment by Panthoor 11.17.08 @ 9:14 pm

Dixon looked lost in the first 5 minutes but when he found his rhythm looked really good. Fields looked great when he kept his focus (see Stuart’s comments). Young with a monster game. Rebounding lacking without Blair early, Jamie must’ve kicked the other guys in the butt for the 2nd half.
Wannamaker looked like a deer caught in the headlights of two oncoming cars. Biggs OK on offense, clueless on defense. Gibbs and Robinson seemed pretty good on D.
And….Gary McGhee with 2-2 free throws at the end.

Comment by KeyboardKev 11.17.08 @ 9:22 pm

notes:

Young’s ball handling is suspect yet again but his athleticism is clearly outstanding.

blair is fantastic but needs to stay out of foul trouble. same story.

dixon made a few poor decisions with the ball but other than that he looked real good. definitely a surprise. didn’t know he could stroke it like that.

fields, what can you say? the man is great with the ball and smart.

biggs looks like he’s made strides to improve his game. it was unusual to see him take the ball to the hole the way he did two or three times tonight. i like it when he’s agressive.

robinson to me looks like the most impressive youngster. missed a few easy shots but he’s gonna be good. has a good feel for the game.

wannamaker also looks like he’s improved. more confident. more assertive.

gibbs has a strange stroke but as long as it goes in. i think he has the chance to be a better version of ramon.

woodall’s handle worries me. but i like his tenacity.

mcgee also looks like he’s improved. sometimes he can still be a pushover under the boards. this shouldn’t be the case. he’s huge.

team d looks great.

Comment by Gary 11.17.08 @ 9:34 pm

Everyone looked good but Wannamaker threw the ball away a couple of times, andBiggs still dosen’t rebound.

Comment by alcofaan 11.17.08 @ 9:37 pm

Chas-
You should look into upgrading to the new version of WordPress when it comes out in a week or so. It includes threaded comments, which would work really well in open threads like this.

Comment by matt 11.17.08 @ 9:39 pm

Very impressed with Jermaine Dixon so far. That kid has enough game on offense and is shut down on defense. Dare I say he might be an upgrade over Ramon (man I hated typing that). Wannamaker did not look so good. He hasn’t made much progress thus far. The kid has game, but he just can’t seem to find the confidence to just go out there and play. Thinking too much.

The starting line-up looked very good. Biggs has played very well so far. Needs to pick it up on the defensive boards, but playing well with the increased responsibility. I think a line-up of Fields, Dixon, Brown, Young and Blair may be too much for most teams to handle defensively. For teams with a bigger front line the current starting line-up will be great. We are going to be tough to score against that is for sure.

Once Young really gets going offensively we are going to be very, very tough. This looks like a pretty good team so far. I am very impressed with the defense. Miami didn’t score for the first 5 minutes of the game.

Comment by Omar 11.17.08 @ 9:50 pm

Just got back from the game. Gary nailed most of the posts, and I’ll write a bit more on the Zoo’s blog tomorrow, but I’m damn impressed with Jermaine Dixon. Everybody’s making a few mistakes early in the year, but he will either be our starting SG or switch off being the “6th man” with Gil Brown…either way he’s earned himself serious playing time. The fouls called on Blair were, for the most part, really awful. The refs called this very tight, not nearly what we’ll see in a Big East game, with a lot more pounding.

Comment by merlin 11.17.08 @ 9:52 pm

If Fields continues to play like the first 2 games this season then he is going to be real hard not to draft. Obviously we have a long way to go but he deserves a payday.

Comment by Panthoor 11.17.08 @ 10:03 pm

I was there. Overall talent level is as high as I have seen it. At times we were playing 3 freshmen and 2 sophs. and the D was still there. Everyone played solid except after it got out of hand. The forst half stayed close but we had plenty of substitutions and Blair sat out 12 + min with 2 fouls. Tiesi is a local kid from North Allegheny. They picked him up last year after they saw him in the gym when Fields was hurt and they needed a practice player. When he was a freshman he played for some Div. III team. There is a high ceiling for this team as long as they stay healthy.

Comment by J.P. 11.17.08 @ 10:53 pm

[…] the comments about and after the game, lots of love for Jermaine Dixon. Some of that I think is just relief that Pitt […]

Tiesi was at Bellarmine (Kentucky) last year.
