Get Some Scott McKillop

Sorry, back to school day for the kid. Re-adjusting the schedule, and all the fun stuff. Hence, the lack of any posting.

Last week Scott McKillop did a chat on ESPN.com.

Mike (Pittsburgh): Scott, could this defense end up the best in the country? Can it be good enough to win the Big East?

Scott McKillop: That is my goal and our coaches’ and the players’ goals. In order for us to go from being a good defense to a great defense we need to be up there in every single category. Last year we did well in yards per game, but we have to create more turnovers and three and outs. We have to put our offense in great positions on the field so they can score more easily; that is what makes a great defense.

Wes (Pittsburgh, PA): We’ve heard so many great things on the defensive end of the ball, but how is the offense looking so far in practice? Are they pushing you guys to improve as much as you’re pushing them?

Scott McKillop: Yes, the first few practices we had the upper hand up front, but as camp went on the offense made some very big strides. And when we face great RBs like McCoy and Stephens-Howling who are great athletes it forces you to bring your A game.

McKillop was also named to the Sports Illustrated All-American team.

Off topic a bit but after a whole offseason of bragging to anyone that would listen that this was the year that Wanny fullfills his promise as Pitt head coach, it’s game week and now I’m getting the jitters.

Mainly I’m just thinking about 03, those expectations, and what wound up happening.

God, I swear that we fans get more nervous about this stuff than the players do sometimes! It’s only Monday night, so there’s 4 more days to go.

Look, we’ve all waited a long time for this program to get back to the heights that it was at (well at least in my case) before we were born. I’m not saying that we’re going to get there this year, but this should be the first HUGE step towards getting there. I just don’t know what I’m going to do (at least as a football fan) if we eff this one up.

Well, I guess that’s how you know that it’s football season again right? You think about that weekend’s game all week long and obsess over every little think that could go wrong. I always wondered why my grades get worse in fall semester haha.

Sorry about the rant guys, just had to get it off of my chest.

Jimbo – I know what you mean. I have high hopes for this team, and our coach also, and am pretty confident they will handle things easily on Saturday….

But, then I find myself reading everything I can get my hands on about Bowling Green and start worrying over each little bit of positive news about their team I read.

What I have to do is take a step back and realize I control nothing except my ability to show up at the game and cheer these kids on. Of course, waking up early and getting on the laptop and reading everything I can isn’t helping anything.

Keep an ever keel. This is still a young team. Look at the depth chart. There will be injuries.

I’m excited about this team, but not to the level that I was going into Hot Rod’s senior year. As I see it, we are probably the 3rd or 4th best team in the league. But, the league is close enough that with a few breaks and some key players performing to their potential we could win the BE this year. I don’t think it likely, but it could happen (which is something I would have never said the last two years). I slso think that next year (with or without Shady, we will be the class of the BE.

I think most of us by now know better than to get over-excited before a season even begins. I think we are all cautiously optimistic this year realizing that just as easy as we can win 9 games we can also win 5 (take last season for example). However for the first time I see the depth chart starting to grow more talented. A sign that the program is improving and getting where it needs to be. This year is critical for a couple of reasons. First and foremost is the recruiting. If Pitt meets expectations and goes to a decent bowl game the recruits will take notice of what is going on. If we flop, that is a big step backwards.

I will be there Saturday and hope there is a nice crowd on hand to give the panthers a boost for the season.
