I think I’ve been consistent in saying Coach Dave Wannstedt is not going to be fired if Pitt were to disappoint this year. In that respect, he is not on the hot seat. I do think, however, that this is a big year for the Wannstedt reign. The big excuses — year 1, new system; year 2, defense stunk so blame recruiting; year 3, injuries and officiating — are done. A losing or .500 record and it will be hard to say that Wannstedt is the guy to even get this team to the level Walt Harris had it.

The article on the faith in Wannstedt by the administration is nothing not already known. Coach Wannstedt is on great terms with the key folks — Nordenberg and Pederson. Everyone knows it. There is no question that support has been a benefit to Pitt on  the recruiting side.

“One of the reasons we had the No. 1 recruiting classes in the Big East the past three years is I’m not looking to try to get another college or NFL job,” Wannstedt said. “I’ve done those things. I’m here to finish my career at Pitt.

“It’s one thing for me to say it, but when the administration does the same thing, it’s definitely reassuring to recruits and their parents.”

So, rare is the day I find myself nodding with a Smizik column, but I do agree with his point(s) here.

Wannstedt knows how to run a football program. He knows how to recruit. He knows how to glad-hand the alumni. He is expert at dealing with the media. He’s very good with the general public. He’s the guy any school would want as the face of its program — except for those bothersome game days. On those Saturdays and the occasional Thursday and Friday night, too often things that should not go wrong do go wrong.

On game day, Wannstedt’s Pitt teams have failed to live up to, if not expectations, the level of the team’s talent.

That’s where Wannstedt’s teams have fallen. They have not been ready to play up to expectations every week.

I, along with most of you, can point to a couple of games in the first 3 seasons that still absolutely boggle. Ohio and Nebraska; Rutgers and UConn; Navy and Michigan State. Games that Pitt lost that were so winnable.

Oddly enough, Smizik is actually optimistic in this column. He believes.

This is the year Wannstedt gets it. He is too good a coach to continue to stumble against inferior opposition. He has done too much good recruiting to continue to head a losing program.

Pitt can win nine games this year, maybe 10. It can win the Big East and go to a major bowl game. It can place itself as one of the elite teams in the conference. The work Wannstedt has done on those six other days has put the Panthers in a position to do all this.

“This season, it seems like everything is in the right place,”‘ said All-American linebacker Scott McKillop. “Our defense is coming back. We have a great running back [McCoy], who is a special player.”

This is the year Wannstedt becomes a seven-day-a-week coach.

In a rarity for all us, here’s hoping Smizik is right.

Yeah… couldn’t believe how positive Smizik was here.

I’ve got to say, when I read “This is the year Wannstedt becomes a seven-day-a-week coach,” I got chills.

Let’s hope he is right!

Pitt has to win 8 games this year-I like Wannstedt, I like how he reps the University, his recruiting, his pedigree.

But they have to win at least 8 this year.

I honestly can’t get worked up about Pitt football and success anymore. Sure, there was a time in which I thought Wanny might actually be a good college coach, but that has passed. I’m still thinking about buying tickets, because I still enjoy going to games (heck, I enjoy going to games so much I went to awful Duke games in my undergrad years), but it’ll be more, well, blah. And I won’t hesitate to heckle Wanny if he disappoints, again.

BTW, I’m already aware of the grief I’m going to get about this post (b/c apparently you can’t be a real fan if you hate the coach’s guts, so say the people who hated Walt’s guts), so just save your energy.

Joshua, nowhere in your post do you say that you’ll cheer for PITT should things turn out well for DW and the team. But, of course, you make a point to let us know you’ll be the first to heckle him should they not.

So, I’ll make your prediction come true and say you can’t be a real fan if you see things so one sidedly.

Joshua,
Do all Pitt fans a favor and DO NOT buy season tickets!!!

Although the Pitt admin won’t say it, Wanny is on the hot seat this year. If he doesn’t come through and disappoints again, how many more tries do you give the man? Anything short of eight wins and a bowl win will be a disappointment. Wishing Wanny and his players the best.

Joshua:

Were you referring to the “awful” Duke game last year in Madison Square Garden?

Comment by Omar 08.04.08 @ 1:22 pm

Joshua, let me ask bluntly: would you rather Pitt go 12 and 1 and win a new years day bowl or 1 and 11 and they fire Wannstache? It seems to me you would rather they go 1 and 11 and fire Wanny. If so, why are you posting on this site? It’s primarily for Pitt FANS.

Comment by Crackbaldo 08.04.08 @ 1:27 pm

You are all confirming what I said, that it’s A-OK to hate Walt’s guts, but G-d forbid I say anything about St. Wanny! Would I rather Pitt win a New Year’s Day bowl? No, because that would mean they aren’t playing in the BCS Championship Game! (see, I got you there) Based on my personal experiences with Wanny and his recent (lack of) success, I just don’t think that’s going to happen! Apparently this site is “if you’re not with us 100%, you’re against us”, and I don’t like that. I’m not sure the blog author likes that, either.

Comment by Joshua 08.04.08 @ 3:46 pm

BTW, when I say “hate Walt’s guts”, I was referring to when he was coach at Pitt. I’ve heard of stories such as Pitt fans questioning his manhood/sexuality, for example, stuff that is just completely beyond the pale.

Comment by Joshua 08.04.08 @ 3:49 pm

I can sympathize with Joshua’s position. We’ve been waiting quite some time now (under both Wannstedt and Harris) for a breakout season, and for the most part the team’s been a perennial disappointment. A tempered attitude is hardly unwarranted at this point, although I guess my pessimism is directed more at the program in general than just at Dave Wannstedt.

Comment by Jeff 08.04.08 @ 6:10 pm

We gave Walt 8 seasons to see what he could do with his recruits, and his system. And we saw it topped out at 4 losses and backdooring a BCS bowl game. That was the best he’d ever do.

Wanny has completed THREE seasons and we’re comparing them. Unreal. Some of us want to see if in 8 years, with the ability to recruit players like he does, if he can get us further than Walt did. We know what we get with Harris: mediocrity. And maybe Wannstedt turns out to be mediocre, hell, maybe he turns out to be worse. But to dog him after 3 years is absurd.

How about we give him the full 8 years Walt got. Who here thinks Wannstedt’s best season in 8 years isn’t going to be better than 8-4, or 9-4? Who wants to find out?

How come we didn’t fire Harris after his first 3 years? He had a worse record than Wannstedt…hell, wannstedt would have to go 4-8 to have a worse record than Walt after 4 years.

Give the guy a REAL chance to get his players and his system set. Then you can hate him if he fails, oh fair weather fan.

I got tickets this year…12th row, 35 yard line. See the people who believe at the games.

(Sorry i won’t be on here to bitch during games…i hope you can all live without.)

Comment by Stuart 08.04.08 @ 10:49 pm

well said Stuart. Stability in a program is so important to recruiting, keeping good assistant coaches, and most importantly to the head coach who can make a decision for the long term good of the program, rather than a decision based on winning this week or else I’ll get fired.

Comment by square44 08.05.08 @ 12:23 am

Thank you Jeff for your kind comment. As someone who was witness to Wanny’s 1-8 disaster in Miami, impatient and pessimistic do not begin to explain my disdain for Wannstedt. Thanks for being unlike some people like Stugotz, who just wears dark-blue sunglasses and says to hell with fans who don’t support St. Wanny 100%.

Comment by Joshua 08.05.08 @ 12:30 am

Yeah, thats it. Cause i don’t want to toss him out as fast as ND tossed out Ty, i’m a homer.

Hey, speaking of, how’d that work out for them?

“Decided schematic advantage” and all…

Perpetual coaching changes must be a good thing. Maybe we should get a new one every year.

Did you miss the part where i said “And maybe Wannstedt turns out to be mediocre, hell, maybe he turns out to be worse”? I’m not sold on Wannstedt, i’m sold on giving Wannstedt a fair shot.

As we’ve said before, go worry about the dolphins, leave Pitt to us.

(wow – all their coaching changes have done them well too!)

Comment by Stuart 08.05.08 @ 1:29 am

For the record, Stugotz, Saban left on his own, and new management saw what an idiot CaMORON (who was hired in a hurry b/c of what Nick SATAN did) was. That John Beck won’t even be able to break second string this season will be testament to that.

Comment by Joshua 08.05.08 @ 11:40 am

For the record, you conceded everything else i said. I’m glad you’ve finally seen the light.

Comment by Stuart 08.05.08 @ 6:11 pm

No I didn’t. You pointed to Miami as a major example, and I called you on your naivete of the situation there.
