Definitely a Focus on the Line

Today Fernando Diaz picked Pitt over UConn to be commit number 6. I have to admit that this would be a more exciting get, if the player picking Pitt over UConn was in basketball. Diaz in an offensive guard, though, and building depth on the O-line is a good thing.

Diaz comes in as a 2-star recruit and also ranked #9 overall in New York by Rivals.com.

This is the 3d verbal for a likely O-line player to this point. along with Juantez Hollins and Cory King.

Right now the lines, linebacker and safety seem like the more important spots to build depth. It seems Pitt has depth and talent at QB, RB, FB, WR and CB. Especially with the number of redshirts.

The lines have remained an issue as any injury along them seems to throw everything into a mess. Forcing moves and shifts. Attempts to shore up spots.

I admit I’ve never seen Mr. Diaz play, but this seems like an underwhelming signing based on the other offer he received. Maybe Wannstache say something he liked.

Judging by his star rating, yes this may seem underwhelming. But, take into account that he plays in an area where football is not even close to a priority for scouts and recruiting experts. He only camped at two schools and came away with offers from both. At Pitt, he received an offer over players who Scout and Rivals had ranked higher. I trust our coaches judgement. If stars are what matter to you, hopefully now that he is on the radar, he will at least pick up one more, if not two.

The kid has fire in his belly. I like that.

Don’t be star struck. Diaz won a national high school strongman competition and can bench-press 360 pounds, squat 500, push a SUV 50 yards in 18 seconds, and has good footwork according to the Pittsburgh Tribune. Welcome to Pitt Mr. Diaz!

I’ve also heard all the amazing things about this kid, and if “he went to 10 camps, he’d have 10 offers.” But the kid can’t afford that and plays in Brooklyn – no one recruits there. If you see a picture of this kid, you’d give him an offer too. He’s got a year of HS, and he’s massive. And not cheeseburger massive, a mountain of steel massive.

Hey, I’m excited about this “get.” Another guard from NY to replace Fields…and he is called an offensive guard, so hopefully he can hit the three ball with great regularity…With his size, nobody will penetrate the lane…

What’s that you say…he’s a football player….if so, then in the immortal words or Rosadanna, “Oh, never mind!’

I do like this get, and think he’ll contribute in a few years. He appears to be a solid (not fat) player.

Hail to PITT!
