Pitt is supposed to find out sometime this week if Mike Cook will get that 6th year.

“They’ve got all the material,” Dixon said. “The process has gone exactly as we thought it would. We’re going to know this week.”

“I haven’t really been thinking about it,” he said. “The toughest thing right now is getting my knee better. It feels real good. I’m running on it now. I will start cutting on it probably in the next week or two.”

Pitt has awarded all of its scholarships for the 2007-08 season, so if Cook is granted a sixth-year of eligibility, the Panthers’ next goal would be to find him one. A possibility would be redshirt sophomore center Austin Wallace, who is still recovering from knee surgery last season.

The other possibility is if one of the incoming players does not qualify. There are some rumors swirling that JUCO transfer Jermaine Dixon might have academic problems. I don’t know.

Meanwhile, despite all of Pitt’s scholarships filled and the possibility of Mike Cook returning as well. Iowa State free agent Wesley Johnson continues to consider Pitt.

SF Wesley Johnson, who averaged 12.4 points as an Iowa State sophomore, is scheduled to start making visits as he begins his transfer process. Johnson is expected to visit Ohio State and Pitt, and he’s strongly considering Syracuse. With his length and toughness — he averaged 7.9 rebounds as a freshman — Johnson can make an impact after sitting out a year.

In the same article there’s a bit on Sam Young and playing more at small forward.

Pitt’s Sam Young, three years into a career he expected to spend as a small forward, has played almost exclusively as a power forward. As a freshman and sophomore, he wasn’t comfortable with the offense while playing the perimeter and contributed inside because of his toughness and athleticism. Last season, he played up front because Pitt needed him there. But the Panthers hope to play a bigger lineup this season, making greater use of 6-10 Gary McGhee and 6-8 Tyrell Biggs, which could free Young to play more minutes at small forward. Young was scheduled to get a nice education in that art as a counselor at Nike’s Vince Carter Skills Academy this week in Orlando. The camp is designed for top young high school wing players.

Obviously for Young to get to the NBA he needs to develop more on the wing. The issue is not his offense, but his defense at that spot. To be honest, I’m not sure a camp named for Vince Carter would be much on defensive skill sets.

Finally, Pitt is still looking for a quality opponent (Insider subs.) to play at Madison Square Garden.

Pitt is desperate to get a Dec. 17 opponent for a game in Madison Square Garden. Only teams from the top six conferences need apply.

Um, actually five conferences (and Memphis). It’s not like Pitt will schedule a non-con with a conference team. Considering it’s at the Garden and ESPN would almost certainly televise, you would think there would be a lot more interest in the exposure.

Except that its an automatic “L” for most teams…

For the locals, the Pittsburgh Basketball Club Pro-Am Summer League starts today. Games are every Mon and Wed for the next few weeks. It seems like Pitt and WVU’s entire teams are on one of the six teams in the league.

Went once last year and got early looks at McGhee and Wannamaker. Gibbs, Miller, Woodall and Robinson are all listed on teams for this year’s league.

Might want to add this to your running list of way to early predictions- Schlabach from ESPN has a bowl watch already and has Pitt headed for the Meinke Car Care Bowl. But we’re listed as “serious darkhorses” for a BCS bowl.

Finally got around to getting fball tickets, they said they didn’t have 2 seats available anywhere on the first level Pitt side (130+s), but had 2 in 107. Then suddenly they were able to “find” two in 109 about 10-15 rows back cause “someone changed seats” or something. Anyways, the first level is almost sold out, sounds like they have some work to do on the second level still…

Anyone remember what time the backyard brawl is set for? Cause i can’t remember…

I just bought 3 season tickets – with a high enough donation to sit anywhere – and best I got was 107 row V.

I believe I could have sat anywhere upstairs but chose the lower

Probably a smart choice. To walk up to the 500 level in time you have to leave about a week before kickoff.

After beating Duke and then taking the Big East title there in the same season, few teams of stature are going to play us in a high profile MSG game.

Maybe we gotta think out of the box. Does anyone know if we’ll get Cuse twice this season? If not, would it be against the BE rules to play an “IC-OOC” game at MSG with Cuse?

If not, dare I say, offer a home and home with UCLA — one at Staples Center, one at MSG.

Got back from games…like predicted, half our kids not there. No Young, Fields, Blair, Dixon (as far as i could tell), some other recruits, or grads Benji and Degroat. Gil Brown out for a week with sprained ankle. Cook was there walking around, shooting the ball, screwing around a little, seemed fine. Not in top athlete shape, but could do anything normal people do.

If Dwight Miller is a “project” – i wouldn’t mind if we picked up more projects.

Biggs couldn’t hit the broadside of a barn. Wannamaker didn’t do much. Woodall looked fine. McGhee was inconsistent. First game in a while, probably some rust all around. I was most impressed with Miller.

They would NEVER play a Big East team outside the official conference schedule

I don’t know how viable this would be but I wouldn’t mind seeing a “home & home” with Maryland – playing at MSG and at Verizon Center. This helps showcase each team in 2 very key markets. I know Maryland isn’t as highly regarded as they once were, but they still have some cache nationally.

This could be too much of an advantage for Maryland since College Park is only about 10-20 miles from Chinatown. But Pitt does have a decent presence in DC and we all know how well we’d travel to MSG. But it is a game that makes some sense (to me at least). Maybe I’m just wishfully thinking since I live in Arlington.

Stuart,

For those of us that have been out of the burgh awhile, could you describe whereabouts in Green Tree they play these games? I’m going to be up there 7/16 and would really like to go.

link to greentreesportsplex.com ! 600 Iron City Drive, I looked it up, even though I don’t think I can go to any games! 🙁 When’s the Mike Cook news supposed to come out/where will it first be? I’m gettin anxious.

Greg in the Big Easy… If you go, keep your eye out for the turn into the complex. As I recall from last year, it was easy to miss.

Couldn’t go last night, but wanted to wait any way, in the hopes that more Pitt players will be on the court.

Comment by Carmen 06.26.08 @ 11:28 am

What they said above…just off the greentree exit…head down mansfield ave, the turn is to the right, it is easy to miss cause its not labeled at all. Head up the hill, and then there is another right that is easy to miss cause its not marked well either.
