A local Fox station in Memphis reported that Memphis and the Big East were hot and heavy in negotiations to have the Tigers join.

Ever since the Memphis Tigers got left behind in the Great Bum Rush to leave Conference USA– also known as the Big East expansion in 2003– Tiger fans have had one singular goal. To follow their old rivals from Louisville, and Cincinnati to the greener pastures of the Big East.

And here’s where it gets interesting.

Sources have confirmed to FOX13 Sports that University of Memphis officials have been in serious talks with the Big East about joining the conference.

Of course the Big East is denying this story.

…Big East spokesman John Paquette to track down these rumors that Memphis might join the Big East and he categorically denied them.

“No truth,” Paquette said by phone from Rhode Island. “I saw the clip. It’s a TV report with no named sources. No one from the University of Memphis. No on-the-record sources. We’ve been down this road. We are not talking about expansion with any institution.”

Repeat after me, there won’t be any expansion until there is a split of the conference between the football schools and the basketball only schools.

The football side desperately needs another team, just for scheduling purposes. Hoops… needs another team like they need a hole in the head.

There seems to be a lot of posturing regarding schools seeking admittance to the Big East. The BE conference is already bloated with schools. Something has to give. I suspect that the BE will split into two conferences along football verses basketball lines.

As an Akron fan I would love to see the UofAkron Zips in the expected football conference. Akron clearly seemed pointed in that direction.

Akron’s cozy relationship with the BE with regards to the BE currently holding their indoor track championships at Akron has to be a plus for the Zips.

Geographically there is a pretty tight community of schools stretching from Memphis back to Syracuse. This region contains Akron and could well include Toledo or another MAC school willing to spend the money.

Memphis would be an excellent addition to the BE. I can visualize potential rivalries involving current BE schools on the western side of the conference and new opponents such as Toledo, Memphis and Akron.

It is interesting to note that the so called football schools also possess excellent basketball programs.

Of particular interest to Akron would be a home for its excellent men’s soccer program. Currently the Zips tend to play more Big Ten than any other out of conference games.

Before this all shakes out we can expect a fair number of schools making considerable effort to become a part of the Big East. Success breeds interest.

I’d think that Memphis would be content to be far and away the best team in Conference USA and cruise to their 20+ win record year in and year out. Sure seems like a better bet than having to get beat up by Pitt, Uconn, Syracuse, Georgetown, and the rest of the BE.

I say let’s get rid of the Catholic b-ball church schools…and hello to Football and Basketball programs…I don’t know why Villanova doesn’t step it up to become a D1 football program.

Comment by Marco 05.15.08 @ 4:56 pm

Why are Akron people on this board?? Just because Memphis, perenially one of the top teams in the country, is trying to get into the Big East, doesn’t mean we’re open for any old program to jump in. I’d rather have Penn Staters or Mountainqueers come here and make comments…Akron will never ever ever get into the Big East….everrrrrrrrrrrrr

As for Memphis, this would be awesome. The Big East would become like a basketball monopoly. My goodness can you imagine seeing Memphis, UConn, Syracuse, Georgetown, and Lousiville every year…just in CONFERENCE play!!

Comment by tdemps 05.15.08 @ 5:23 pm

Agreed tdemps. Akron and Toledo? Are you effin kidding me? Why don’t we see if Point Park and St Francis of Pa want to join?

Comment by Crackbaldo 05.15.08 @ 9:31 pm

the memphis thing might be the Big East trying to cover the loss of big time hoops schools georgetown and villanova if they kick the catholic universities out or split somehow. its just too bad memphis’ football team is AWFUL.

Comment by matt in orlando 05.15.08 @ 11:04 pm

Landind a good football program should be a priority. The BE does not need Memphis. We have all the good basketball schools we need. Notre Dame should be pressured to join, its not right that we allow them special treatment.

Aside from the fact that adding Memphis will give the Big East 5,600 basketball schools is the fact that the academics at Memphis make WVU look like Harvard.

I think the Big East can get along alright with the current set-up for a couple years and see how it plays out. The best thing possible is (the impossible), to get a dragging basketball only school to leave the conference (Seton Hall?) but that will never happen.

The Big East football schools need to examine whether it is more worthwhile for a conference of Pitt, USF, WVU, Cuse, UConn, Ville, Cincy, Rutgers to add schools like Memphis, or whether it is more beneficial to keep the current arrangement because of the basketball benefits (if there are any).

Perhaps schools could be invited to just play in football and that is it – Memphis may like that since CUSA doesn’t play football at the 1A level – seriously – Tulsa?

[…] Pitt Blather (No f’n way unless the conference splits. Also some hilarious comments from an Akron(!?) fan pushing for the Zips to become a Big East member. […]

I can see a scenario where “all of the above” happens, but first let me say that my remarks are based on the fact (I believe) that there are three things that will never happen: (1) ND joining the BE in FB; (2) Penn State joining the BE; and (3) Pitt joing the Big 11. Here is my scenario for “all of the above” happening: The Big East expands in FB by one team (Memphis) and BB by two teams (Memphis and Xavier). In FB there would be a single 9 team conference, in BB there would be one conference with two Divsions of nine teams each. All nine FB or “all sports” teams would be in one Division; and, the other Division would have all of the non-FB member Schools. So Pitt, Cin, Uconn, Lville, RU, SoFla, Cuse, WVU, and Memphis would be in the “FB Schools” division; and, Gtown, Depaul, Marq, ND, Providence, SJU, Seton Hall, Nova, and Xavier would be in the Non-FB Member Division. The Top 8 teams from each Division would go to the BET.

Get over! MEmphis would blast through the Big East if it was in a major conference. Memphis produces tons of football players each year…they just go to Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Arkansas, Auburn, Alabama, and Kentucky. If Memphis was in the Big East they would keep those players and blast the Big East just like the SEC blasts all the other conferences! Besides, decisions don’t have to make sense; it’s all about money. FedEx (headquartered and founded in Memphis) is pushing (with their $$$ – FedEx Orange Bowl, FedEx Field – Washington Redskins) for Memphis to get in.

Comment by ksdksdksd 05.16.08 @ 3:15 pm

Despite ksdksdkdsd’s lack eloquence, he makes fair points. Memphis (the city) is a football hotbed, and if they were in a BCS Conference, their recruiting would instantly pick up. Well, that’s assuming Tommy West is no longer their coach (You think Walt is a terrible game day coach? Just watch this guy in action; it’s not pretty). And you can never deny the persuasive power of $$$.

Comment by Greg in Columbia 05.16.08 @ 4:09 pm

Villanova jumping up to Div 1-a in football would be the best bet, because as it is now, Mike Tranghese would never, ever bounce any of the small hoops schools. This conference is his baby and much like Paterno, until he is forced out, nothing that makes sense will happen. So much damage has already been done … adding DePaul and Marquette was RETARDED, yet how can we bounce them now? That alone makes expansion very, very difficult. I hate to think he is that stupid … maybe Nova does intend to step it up, or maybe he was conned into thinking Notre Dame would commit in football someday (if they continue to struggle and NBC would decide not to renew their golden deal, etc.).

But, seeing how the conference was so easily screwed over by the ACC (which seems like a bunch of bumbling dolts themselves) .. yeah, I do think he’s that stupid. Works fine for the tiny hoops schools .. Meanwhile, Pitt is one of the unfortunate victims. We have to schedule I-AA crap in football due to a lack of teams, and get screwed in basketball scheduling because there are too MANY teams, so we can’t play more home and homes with our biggest rivals. Can’t wait to see who we get next year … maybe Rutgers and St. Johns?

Comment by geeman2001 05.16.08 @ 11:21 pm

Geeman, I gotta disagree with you. The trained geese will have little to say about what happens in the BE as far as a split or adding a team or two. He has bosses that will dictait policy. He may well put in his 2 cents but Nordy and his gang will decide.

Comment by joel 05.17.08 @ 7:55 pm

I think he has some say, because men like Nordenberg otherwise would have seen the folly of the current setup and avoided it. Regardless of the true situation, I don’t foresee any changes now until 2013.

Comment by geeman2001 05.17.08 @ 11:05 pm

I gotta agree about Memphis not being a good fit based on institutional quality.

Comment by fred 05.18.08 @ 7:31 am

I agree with Marco. The relationship between the football schools and Catholic basketball schools is shakey. Villanova needs to add Bowl Division football – a great move for Pitt as a new intra-state rivalry will be drawn. I cannot imagine the Big East wouldn’t recover its affliation with the Liberty Bowl if Memphis were to join.

Comment by TonyinHouston 05.18.08 @ 9:55 am

The hardest thing about accepting Memphis wouldn’t be its academic quality. For Jebus’ sake, we already have WV”U”, which has been proven in the last year to be worse than a dog obedience school (at least those places produce obedient animals). If the conference can hold its nose and survive with WVU’s shenanigans, Memphis could hardly be as bad.

No, the problem with Memphis is coming in for both major sports. We already have way, way too many hoops schools. As I mention above, Tranghese will not be bouncing anyone from Basketball, especially his precious tiny little original schools. And how can we get rid of MU and DePaul so soon? I can imagine what that would cost in lawsuits and ugly publicity.

So we need a program in football only. Navy is the best choice by far for many reasons … academic quality, proximity, recent (decent) success, already an annual ND opponent, etc. But apparently Navy isn’t likely.

Maybe the better bet would be to swallow pride and ask Temple back in for football like they were before. Both sides could easily negotiate how to handle it to save face for both. “Temple has committed itself to improvement, blah blah blah.” What’s more, I don’t think that’s altogether untrue. If Temple could right itself like Rutgers did, I think the Phila. market would embrace it more, like any market embraces a winner. Temple’s problem is that it has been the Pittsburgh Pirates, minus the great stadium and bobbleheads, for the past 20-30 years. It needs a season like RU had 3 years ago.

Comment by geeman2001 05.18.08 @ 9:55 pm

I wont say that Akron will be going to the Big East just yet, but I believe they are positioning themselves to be admitted to a more prominent conference. In 2009, they will be opening up a state-of-the-art 30,000 seat football stadium. They have been building new non-sports facilities like crazy which has dramatically changed downtown Akron.

As for the comments about Penn State to the Big East, please take them from the BigTen. Nothing would make me happier. Penn State has little in common with its western peers and is by far the most difficult BigTen campus to get to.

Finally, to the people complaining about Notre Dame’s special status…welcome to the club!
