How Far Is Too Far?

“…he sucks too.” Chances are you’ve heard that if you’ve been to a Pitt home basketball game in the last few years. If not, let me explain: after each visiting player is introduced, the students yell “sucks!” and after the opposing head coach is announced they yell “he sucks too!” All while holding up a special Zoo newspaper in front of their faces.

Why bring this up? I got to thinking about it after reading “Over The Top” by Grant Wahl in Sports Illustrated. Basically it explains that excessive vulgarity and taunting by fans (mostly students) is getting out of control to the point where it’s become dangerous. Whether it be UAB fans angering Memphis players enough to almost make the players storm into the stands, or maybe the parents of a visiting player hit with objects thrown by fans (i.e. Indiana’s Eric Gordon whose mom was hit with a cup of ice in Illinois). There’s a line and it’s being crossed more and more.

How about in Oregon? Stan Love, father of UCLA’s Kevin Love, received a horrible welcome when UCLA played the Ducks.

Stan says his family was pelted with popcorn cartons and empty cups, as well as a barrage of profane insults (“every filthy word you can think of”), including screams of “whores” that made Kevin’s grandmother cry. “There were six-year-old kids with signs saying KEVIN LOVE SUCKS. It was the grossest display of humanity I’ve ever been involved with.”

Did I mention that Stan is #6 on the Oregon all-time scoring list?

“To think I’m sitting at the school where I played ball, and just because my kid didn’t pick Oregon he gets abused like that? I’ll never go back there.”

To put that into perspective, that would be like Pitt fans doing this to Brandin Knight (14th leading scorer in Pitt history) if he were to have a kid that played for Georgetown. Way to go there, Oregon.

So how about our very own Oakland Zoo? They got mention the the SI article:

There may not be nearly as many incidents of racism and anti-Semitism in college arenas as there were in the 1960s, but in the year 2008 many fans are waving anti-gay signs, which often appear on national TV broadcasts. Last month a Pittsburgh fan held up a BROKEBACK MOUNTAINEERS sign when the Panthers met rival West Virginia.

But is it really that bad if it’s not directed at one player in particular? Well it’s certainly better than singling out one opposing player, such as fans have done for Levance Fields (“taser!”) among others. Sometimes it is a bit much, even at the cheers directed at the entire team, especially if the f- and s-words are involved. At West Virginia last Monday, the “F— you Pitt” and “Eat s— Pitt” chants were audible through the television. Members of the Zoo have dropped occasional f-bombs but nothing to that extent.

Back to the “sucks” chant though — it’s been clear that the team and Jamie Dixon aren’t really the biggest fans of it. The Oakland Zoo spent some time trying to figure out something new to do during pre-game intros. Eventually they decided on singing the Victory Song which began on January 2 against Lafayette. The “new tradition” lasted for about 15 seconds.

The fact is that “sucks” just isn’t a vulgar word compared to other things heard in college arenas. The audio folks at the Pete have started to play music while the visitors are being introduced, which seems counterproductive in some way. There’s nothing like helping to get the other team pumped up while being introduced in your own building.

Maybe it’s because I’m not that sensitive to swearing that it doesn’t affect me as much. Sometimes the personal attacks can be too much though, but I also think sometimes people are too quick to call something “hurtful”. It comes with the territory of playing D-I hoops, especially in a big conference.

It certainly crosses the line when things are thrown at visiting fans and players’ parents. To my knowledge, nothing like this has happened in the Pete and I hope it stays like that. Also crossing the line? Throwing things onto the court, which happens much too often and recently in Arizona (video link). Lastly, it seems as though WVU prides itself on the reputation that a Pitt fan can’t walk around Mountaineer Stadium by themselves without having things hurled at them and possibly being punched. How far is too far? That is.

The problem is with ESPN and National Networks just as much the fans. They zoomed in on a kid in a speedo during the Duke UNC game screaming suck it and gesturing towards his package. They then proceeded to apologize for anybody that they offended in the process.

Fans will be fans. It has been like this for a long time, but the more the games are televised, the more you will see these shananigans.

A funny thing that I have seen done before is during the visitor introductions, they have very un-hype music. It would be funny if WVU had to come out to Hanson Um Bop.

Simple solution to elevate oneself above the fracas. Cheer *for* your team and not *against* the opponent. And never, under any circumstances, wear a Speedo.

“Brokeback mountaineers” is at least clever – no mention that they are too stupid down there to think of anything like that, and instead go right to the “GRAYS A FAGGOT” chant? Fuck you, SI.

The word “sucks” isn’t even vulgar. Most people LAUGH the first time they hear it. I have no idea why anyone whines about it…

And the students are MUCH better than when I was at Pitt. Calhoun called our fans classless and said we were the worst fans in the big east back when we played in the fieldhouse – we used to throw change at him and others. The kids now are SAINTS compared to that.

It seems that the WVU fans are trying to be like Philly pro sports fans.

Put it this way, in Philly, ESPN and everyone else have hyped up this image of the fans as these crazed idiots that will brawl with you if you wear opposing colors. They romanticized this idea in the national media instead of condemning. They’d almost speak with fondness on TV about the court room in the old Vet. Therefore, Phlly fans feel the need to be even bigger assholes to live up to a reputation that ESPN helps perpetuate.

Same thing is going on down in WVU, except their reputation as nasty fans is more local than national like Philly’s is. The kids down there now feel the need to live up to this reputation.

Problem is, nobody told any of these jerkoffs that physically taunting an opposing fan when they’re alone or in a small group, while you’re in an extremely large group, does nothing but make you look like a pussy.

I mean, they surely wouldn’t try to attack a Pitt fan if they met them one-on-one in the street. But put them in the arena with like-minded folks in a gang, and they get real brave all the sudden.

“But put them in the arena with like-minded folks in a gang, and they get real brave all the sudden.”

Don’t you mean put them in an arena with their brothers and cousins? Sorry, I had to say it.

Anyway, after watching the WVU game, I am very proud to call myself a member of the Oakland Zoo. We are much classier and much more creative than WVU will ever be, in every single aspect down to the student section’s name. Sure, WVU may be able to pack more students into their shit-hole of an arena, but at least we don’t research players’ vulnerable pasts…let alone chant the F-word on national television. Heck, we weren’t even that rude to Hibbert.

The worst thing I can remember happening at the Pete has to be last year vs. Marquette. They handed out these “Let’s go Pitt” towels to the Zoo at the beginning of the game. After several consecutive awful calls Marquette’s way, a lot of these towels made their way onto the court. “Brokeback Mountaineers” isn’t even that bad, and it’s clever. Other than that, it’s just been typical “Bulls—” chants after bad calls and universal stuff like that. The fans have been pretty good since I’ve been a student, and the Pete is still the most intimidating place to play in the Big East.

Anyone know where I can watch or listen today? None of the usual sites seem to have the game.

Comment by Maz 03.09.08 @ 11:06 am

Speaking of the zoo, there’s a light turnout today due to spring break. But there’s an honorary member, Steve Peterson is in the front row.

Maz, i’m trying to get Channelsurfing to post the game. earlier I was able to get the sound, announcers, and then UAB video feed came on. I’m listening on alll access, but that requires a fee. I’ll let you know if there is another option

The game is fun when Blair doesn’t have 2 fouls at this time of the game.

Comment by Panthoor 03.09.08 @ 12:29 pm

Ehhh..we should win this one. A little sloppy but we have to get used to this. Good half from Young and Blair.

Comment by Panthoor 03.09.08 @ 12:49 pm

If Pitt wins we are the #7 seed and play at 7PM Wed. If we lose and Cinn beats Uconn we lose the tiebreaker to Cinn and we are the 8 seed and play at noon. if we lose and cinn loses, we win the tie breaker and 7th seed. with Vill/Syr

The bottom line with this, and I mean most professional and college sports, is that there is so much extraneous crap going on – loud music, stupid timeout antics, bad halftime entertainment – and throw obnoxious fans on top of that and you have an atmosphere that no one really wants to take their families to. It’s too bad really – somewhere down the line the focus went from the players and the competition to the crowds, and to those who live vicariously through their teams (“I’m a better fan then you because I paint my face or wear a strange outfit”).

Comment by Reed 03.09.08 @ 3:23 pm

“Sucks” might now be a bad word but it just sounds like white trash. If the zoo insists on doing this cheer I’d rather they used “stinks” or “bad” instead. (He “stinks” too or He’s “bad” too still work for the last chant.)

Comment by Bobby 03.09.08 @ 7:06 pm

Certain fanbases would only rejoice in being singled out for being tasteless and vulgar. I think we all know (and border) a whole state that relishes that reputation. Think about it, they have continued to vote in a Klansman for senator for DECADES. Not just once or twice and then the news surfaced and they quickly tossed him out. It was known then, known now, and he still wins essentially 100% of the vote there. If the rest of the nation (well, at least the non-south) knowing and ridiculing them for that doesn’t bother them, do we think anyone being offended that they scream profanities at sporting events will bother them?

Speaking of booing players, I wonder what response Terrelle Pryor will get from Pitt fans if he ever suits up against us?

Comment by derf 03.09.08 @ 10:25 pm

How about yelling that another team “sucks” as part of your cheer for your team, even when you are not playing that team? Sound familiar? In fact doing it so much, that the administration at our school basically took the cheer out of our football games! I hate the fact that our “cheer” at football games consists of the cheerleaders holding up signs that say “LETS”, “GO”, “PITT”, instead of what it should be which is the whold crowd following the band’s lead with the P-I-T-T LET’s GO PITT! So don’t get on the kids for picking up on what so many of you have done for years!
